Diner Reviews
  • "Commonwealth continues to "wow" us! Without a doubt, this is one of the best restaurants in San Francisco. Thanks to Chelina, Alex, and crew for amazing service yet again. We are already looking forward to our next visit!"

  • "at this wonderful restaurant. We've been coming here since it opened (I followed the chef whose food I admired before) and it just keeps getting better and better. It's not everyone's cup of tea since the menu is unique and the dishes are complex. But if you read the menu and think WOW, you're right. Some of the most innovative cooking in the city and at a really reasonable price for what you get. Superb place!"

  • "Very plain decor, almost at the level of a diner. In a very sketchy part of the Mission, so be forewarned. The service was impeccable, very friendly, knowledgeable and spot on. The food was quite beautifully presented with interesting combinations and, especially, textures. VERY small protein portions. Sweetbreads were maybe 2 ounces, the Hake, maybe 2-1/2 ounces. The other problem was with the intricate platings some of the components of the dishes were, let's say, less than hot. Maybe it's me, but I guess I'm over the tiny pretty plates where you get four bites and pay $15-20 a course. Not quite smoke and mirrors on the plate, but heading in that direction."

  • "The best tasting meny I ever tried. I still dream of the scallop. Highly recommended."

  • "Very salty food, small portions, gets very stuffy with only one door for ventilation Nice presentation--just very AVERAGE--not worth the heafty price!"

  • "Thank you for very good dinner! We took tasting menu with wine pairing - food was excellent and pairing was perfect."

  • "Hands down one of the best dining experiences in San Francisco. The tasting menu was perfectly balanced, the wines perfectly paired. The scallop starter was the best Ive ever had in my entire life. Many tasting menus tries to do to much, Commonwealth hits the right mark in amounts of flavors, the arc of the meal, the casaul vibe, great wine pairings, awesome service, simplicity/complexity of dishes."

  • "This is a two star Michelin restaurant that we feel should be three stars. I would encourage anyone to go there before it happens. The candied carrots served on a branch was the most creative in presentation. The tomato consommé was the most traditional. Both tradition and creativity were at their height in the lobster bisque with fried sweetbread and bone marrow. The cream made it French but the construction was Asian. The deserts showed the same combination of creativity and tradition, mixing Asian (daikon, for instance) and French (verbena, for instance) aromas. Our waiter guided us very well on the choices of wines alleviating the burden of drinking too much usually associated with pairings. We will return."

  • "Amazing food : a feast for your tastetbuds and presented beautifully. Everything from the special chips to the wine was delicious and perfect. If you want to taste original and exciting food which should be featured on a cooking magazine, don't miss this place !"

  • "Commonwealth is one of my favorite dining spots. They cook simple food but in unexpected ways and combinations that really make the ingredients sing. The service can be a little slow, but forget about that and just enjoy the experience."

  • "The food popped. The textures were amazing (if not a bit pretentious). But my main course order of sole was about 2" X 1" of fish. Not really enough for an entree. The tasting menu had extremely small bites, but there were enough courses to get by."

  • "Commonwealth was the star dinner of a San Francisco trip filled with good food. From the start (a tantalizing amuse bouche) to the end, the tasting menu featured hit after hit. Blends of subtle tastes, beautiful plating, a nice room, attentive staff, honestly. We couldn't ask for more. Perfect."

  • "First time dining at Commonwealth. We were a group of five. The quality, preparation and presentation of the dishes were outstanding. One of us was a bit taken aback at the "small" portions. However, the rest of us very much got and appreciated what Commonwealth is all about: Quality before Quantity. The wine list is small but very well-chose. Highly recommend Commonwealth to those looking for a culinary experience. You might leave a bit hungry, which is not bad. And if driving, plan ahead for parking!!"

  • "Food is complex and the multi-step, multi-ingredient menu must be appreciated. On the other hand, the wait staff, while not condescending exactly, announced the complex ingredients so quickly that we didn't catch all of it and had to ask to be repeated. I think the food deserved a bit more attention than we were given by the wait staff."

  • "A bit too much of a hipster scene for me to visit this place regularly. Probably no one under age 45 in the whole place when we were there, which felt weird, and everyone seemed to be checking everyone else out, which made it feel like there was little privacy. Also, the acoustics were harsh and loud. That said, the food was creative, fresh, and artfully prepared, and the service was very good. The decor felt too casual and crowded before sunset, but it became more intimate after the sun went down."

  • "We had the prix fix and several of the dishes were bland. The last smoked marshmallow with something else was horrible. I would not go to this restaurant again "

  • "The food is delicate, light and a wonderful blending of taste. We had the tasting menu paired with the perfect wines. We have eaten at many of the best restaurants in this country and in Europe and we would rank Commonwealth among the best. Service was pleasant but not overbearing. The real star is the food, as it should be. Each dish was an exciting blend of fresh herbs and produce. Loved every bite. So get your reservations in early and go as soon as you can."

  • "I had been wanting to try this restaurant for a while. Unfortunately our dinner was seriously disappointing. Everything was beautifully plated, but that is as far as my compliments can go. We tried more than half the dishes on the menu and for the most part I did not wish to continue eating them after the initial taste. No flavor. The combinations/ingredients made little sense because nothing tasted right. Tables are so close together that you have to disturb other people to get in and out, while most likely knocking something over. The napkins shed all over everyone's Wish I had better things to say. And I'm not one to usually write reviews, so I guess the fact that I felt strongly enough to take the time to write this says enough. "

  • "The food will definitely wow you and the service is casual but very knowledgeable. The menu changes frequently and the wines on the list pair well with the food. Very much a bargain price wise for the level of food quality and inventiveness and it is wonderful to have great service without any pretension. We will return soon!"

  • "Went here on recommendation of a friend as a place to celebrate a special occasion with my girlfriend. Waited at the small bar and had a cocktail while the staff were setting up our table. We both had the tasting menu and I had the wine pairing to go along with it. A very memorable and amazing meal! Wine pairings were delicious and the sommelier did a great job of describing the tasting notes and where each selection came from. Food was top notch. Overall service was outstanding and I would highly recommend."

  • "The food was good all be it expensive. My general sense with the tasting menu is a over priced. Having had several tasting menus around town this one is pricy and underwhelming. We were there later in the evening and the hostess had abandoned the host stand to take a seat at the bar. Completely not a big deal, here is where the issue arrises, the front door does not close all the way and SF is cold. I had to get up twice to close the door and made eye contact with the hostess at the bar each time, kind of annoying. Here is the kicker, when the hostess left for the evening and walked out the door she didn't close the door behind her. Dinner for 2 at $270 & getting to play doorman for the evening, we'll explore other options."

  • "We both got the tasting menu + wine pairing, which was reasonable at $115pp. Absolutely worth every penny. Every single dish was divine, and the pairings were perfect. We left the table completely satisfied - not too stuffed, not too tipsy. The portions were perfect, and the flavors were incredibly memorable. Highly recommended for a special occasion."

  • "The tasting menu here is driven by the freshest vegetables, so it tasted like biting into spring. There are plenty of exotic ingredients, and even though we sat overlooking the kitchen we couldn't figure out how they made rare brisket so tender. Delicious and you feel good afterward."

  • "Booked Commonwealth for my birthday dinner - it's one of a handful of SF restaurants where you still have to book in advance even after being open for years. The food lived up to our expectations. Really interesting combinations (one of my favorites was their play on fish and chips that they give you as an amuse) executed well. The service was truly great. Had a wonderful time. Note: only wine and beer..."

  • "Living in the Mission neighborhood I have access to many of San Francisco's best restaurants. I had heard a lot about Commonwealth and was looking forward to dining there. Maybe my expectations were too high. The food was good/fair but nothing to write home about considering the price structure. Very small portions, which is fine, but at the price point I expected a little more. The atmosphere is also a little stuffy. With all of the other amazing options in the city I would not recommend it."

  • "Complex, exotic compositions, mysteries abound that delight, tease and inflame the taste buds, with engaging servers and a wine list that intrigues with the offbeat and unusual that is incredibly well-juried. Bravo and all the kudos we can muster - congratulations, you had us at first bite! "

  • "Always have great meals here at Commonwealth. Great for smaller groups (2-3) where you can easily try all dishes tapa style and share. For larger groups nice to do tasting menu as it is a really well-executed tasting. Bring a bottle corkgage only $20."

  • "We loved the pot de creme so much. Each course was unique, creative and delicious. But the pot de creme for dessert was out of this world. "

  • "I think this restaurant tries too hard to serve unique food. The food presentation is gorgeous, but the food was surprisingly not all that great. Subtle flavors, but not tasty."

  • "They have a winning combination with the level of refinement in their food and presentation, friendliness of the staff and the casual no nonsense atmosphere. They are far superior to most restaurants charging similar prices. This has become our favorite restaurant in SF, both for bringing guests and for just a dinner for the two of us. The parking lot is a real bonus. "

  • "I've been to Commonwealth a half-dozen times by now and it never ceases to impress. The dining model is that of three smaller courses, as opposed to appetizer and main course. Each course is a visual work of art and dazzles the taste buds. The service is exceptionally attentive, as each time I've been there, they've taken great care to understand my allergies and make sure a given course doesn't contain any offending ingredients. They know their wines very well, and can therefore accommodate your particular interest, whatever it is. I highly recommend this establishment -- they even have a parking lot!"

  • "We eat here about twice a year and always love it. This was a good meal but probably our least favorite. The wines were not very interesting and the food while good seemed pretty safe for Commonwealth. Also the staff seemed uninterested, bored...who knows. Still a really good restaurant but definitely an off night."

  • "When you walk into this restaurant from the convenient parking lot you enter a temple of fine dining. The decor is simple but elegant in its own way with a large open kitchen from which come dishes plated as works of culinary art. The delight is not just visual. Every bite satisfies. All the combinations of herbs and spices work well. There are many pleasant surprises. The final bill is not one of them. Tho I good value for very special eating."

  • "We are from ny and have gone to most top restaurants there, this easily competes with them. We did the tasting with wine pairings and it was great. They even offered to make changes to a tasting menu which is VERY rare. Everyone there did a great job and it made for one of the best meals we ever had. GO!! Note: We took a cab there and back. It didn't seem like the type of area you want to walk around in after dinner."

  • "I had never been to Commonwealth, but had heard fantastic reports, so I made it the destination for our anniversary dinner. I could not have chosen better. Each dish was interesting, surprising, amazingly fresh and flavorful, and presented beautifully. The wines, too, were stellar - in fact I've never had a better wine pairing experience. There was none of the "we're food snobs" preciousness that sometimes comes in the foodie territory either. Just a genuine talented chef and staff who share what they do generously. Wow. Thank you Commonwealth for a memorable meal."
