Diner Reviews
  • "Interesting concept but execution lacking. Menu has no descriptions so you have to have the server describe how each main dish is cooked. For example main courses just listed as sea bass, chicken, rainbow trout. Don't know about you but I like to know if the food is fried, seated, roasted and what it is cooked with/in. Once described all the preparations were mostly the same, pan seared, kind of boring! Salad and most of the dishes were overly salty, and we told the server! Best part was the make your own dessert concept. The homemade ice cream and hot fudge was tasty. Though the atmosphere was cool would not return."

  • "Cheerful greeters, great industrial space. Limited lunch menu. Server was abrupt and said substitutions not permitted. My out of town guests were not impressed with food quality."

  • "A mix of appetizers and small plates was delicious, varied and more than we could eat. Nice selection of by the glass wines, including some wonderful summer rose's."

  • "This marked our second visit to Commonwealth for Sunday brunch and we were not disappointed. We started with a dozen oysters ($1 each) and of course the zucchini bread. Again, I had the hash and eggs and hubby had the steak and eggs. The Passion fruit mimosa ($7) rounded out the lovely brunch. This visit was certainly more crowded than the last. With the innovative food and $1 validated parking, Commonwealth will be our go-to brunch spot!"

  • "The Commonwealth has a very pleasing interior with a large market and sandwich/deli counter. The staff is super nice although it seems that some are still learning. The brunch has a lot of crowd pleasing choices, very generous servings. Food is on the heavy side."

  • "The perfect Sunday brunch for everyone! Brunch seems to be a thing that is lacking in Boston/Cambridge and Commonwealth certainly fills the void. The offerings were diverse and everyone in our party found something we loved...including the 9 month old. We had the strata, the lemon ricotta pancakes, the 18 wheeler, and the chilaquiles. The strata was particularly wonderful: fluffy, veggie-filled, tomato and goat cheese to top it all off. Great oysters and a spicy bloody mary too. Our waitress was nice and didn't mind our giggling 9 month old's mess."

  • "The food is really fantastic here. I've enjoyed everything that I've ordered in the multiple times I've come. The staff has been really friendly and approachable. The portions are pretty large with the entrée items shareable if you get a few sides. The sides are built for at least two people. For that reason it's really best to go with more than just a couple people so that you can share everything and enjoy more variety if sides, which after perusing the menu, you will definitely want to do because it all looks (and is) so good."

  • "Everything we tried was absolutely delicious, clearly made by someone who understands flavors. The prices are pretty high but the side dishes can be shared. We ordered a side per person but they can definitely be shared by at least two. The scalloped potatoes were yummy as were the wonder beans. Really lovely experience."

  • "Amazingly delicious brunch - if you go w/ a group, get the zucchini bread for the table, you will not be disappointed. The brunch menu isn't huge, but the options are all drool-worthy, prepared fresh, wholly delicious. B/w the table we had the strata, 2 orders of chicken & waffles, and the homemade hash & eggs - everyone left happy. Had a baby w/ us, which I indicated in the reservation - table was ready w/ a high chair, service was great. Will happily go back. Market is also awesome - went home with a pint of strawberry-basil ice cream (yum!!)."

  • "This place has a great lunch menu - it's deceptively short, but when I have been here (twice now), the quality of the food is truly excellent. Where most places try to do too much with too many options and end up serving up mediocre fare, Commonwealth takes great ingredients and hits the right balance. Pleasant, casual atmosphere, attentive but non-intrusive staff. A plus is the 10% off you get if you rent a kayak before lunch from Charles River Kayaks (right next to the outdoor patio for the restaurant)"

  • "As Kendall Sq continues its boom regarding tech and restaurants alike, Commonwealth is absolutely worthy of being mentioned among its foodie-oriented neighbors. Everything we ate had the air (and taste) of quality and freshness. I recommend going with a made-to-order meat and cheese board and several appetizers and sides to share - including the gai lan and the onion strings."

  • "Overall really great experience but the service was SUPER slow. There was one waiter for the entire outdoor area. It looks over 10 minutes to get our check! In general though, definitely quality food used and a great outdoor area."

  • "Overall, our first visit to Commonwealth was enjoyable. Our brunch was fantastic! No, I mean uber-fantastic. Our server was a bit pretentious, but the restaurant certainly was not. Drinks took a bit to get to the table, as did the food but it was worth the wait. Our server's assistant was wonderful and always kept our water full. Be warned, though, this isn't a $2.99 diner special type of place. Breakfast for 4 with one drink was was $148!"

  • "Was pleasantly delighted by the simplicity of the lunch offerings. The sandwiches we ordered had a thoughtful balance of bread to protein. The bread consistency made the sandwiches the perfect bite- crunchy crust and chewy compressible dough to carry the pork belly. Service tends to be slow for outdoor seating, but worth the wait if your not rushing back to work."

  • "This place is incredible - the food was delicious - I had the rainbow trout cooked perfectly, with a side of the duck fat fries...need I say more?! My friend and I shared the scalloped potatoes and broccoli as sides, as well as the incredible grilled flatbread to start. The wine list was great, not overwhelming with 100 million choices, and the cocktails were creative and refreshing. I'm not a fan of gin at all, but the Basil Collins is utterly perfect for summertime. So delicious! The ambiance of the place was great, as well, it felt like a market/restaurant hybrid you'd find in London. Can't wait to return!"

  • "The food was very good, as was the service. Luckily it was warm enough to eat outside because the noise level would have made it impossible to carry on a conversation inside. I don't call this "energetic" (Open Table's term) I call it "deafening." But it was lovely outside and the view of Boston from the Broad Canal was wonderful as evening set in. You can even see the red line trains going over the Longfellow Bridge. A nice urban oasis, and I would go again -- in good weather."

  • "I've been to Commonwealth a couple of times before, and it has some good points but does not compete well with others in the price range. The warm bread was delicious. Three out of four drinks were very sour (too heavy on the lime juice) and we sent one of them back, which we almost never do. The appetizers were good but not spectacular. The entrees were OK but could have been better seasoned, and mine had too many tough parts. The side orders of vegetables were disappointing (broccoli was very bland and arrived lukewarm). The desserts might have been good, but we decided to go elsewhere for dessert. The overall experience was just not worth it. If you do go here in the summer, I recommend trying the newly opened patio area."

  • "I've been to brunch there a couple of times and were pleased with the food each time. Odd how they take reservations, though, when you can't get a certain time, but at the restaurant it's 3/4 empty. Food is always good and portions are huge for brunch. Lots of sunlight and fresh air when they can open the windows/doors. Service is always just average, but it's never been a problem. Overall, a good experience and we will continue to go back and recommend it to others."

  • "Saturday night supper with some business colleagues of my husband's. We had not been to Commonwealth but chose it for its proximity to our apartment. We were seated at a corner table inside, making for a relatively quiet setting. Commonwealth's unique menu has individual entrees but the appetizers and sides are served family style. This was explained by our helpful waiter. The 5 of us ordered 3 appetizer/salads and 3 sides which was plenty. We all had seafood which was fresh and well prepared. Most of us had only water to drink and glasses were refilled regularly. It's moderately expensive- average for the area. Great outdoor seating area and nice drinks menu including some interesting options without alcohol."

  • "I came for lunch with my coworkers and had a great experience! Everyone enjoyed the menu, and the food was delicious. The service and ambience are fantastic. I truly look forward to returning for drinks and dinner with friends and will certainly be back to visit the market and stock up on treats and fresh produce!"

  • "wanted a place for brunch to then hit the charles for some kayaking. i had read good brunch reviews for commonwealth and decided to come here since they're in the same square, but they're actually like 10 feet away from each other!so perfect. we sat outside, got unbelievably good bread pudding french toast (and i'm more of a savory girl), as well as awesome chicken and biscuits. highly recommend"

  • "Decent overpriced food with mediocre service. Half of the staff was friendly, waiter was not. Pricey. Food tastes fine - but you would expect to get more than 4 pieces of salad and 4 fries with a sandwich. Ice cream is $5 for a scoop,$2 for hot fudge and $2 for whipped cream =$9 for a tiny sundae. So disappointing."

  • "We had a terrific experience at Commonwealth. We made our reservation on Open Table and requested a window table which they had arranged. We each had cocktails (great fun / and the Sangria was excellent). The wine list was also good – and most impressively affordable. The service was friendly, helpful and patient. I think the interior design is very thoughtful and comfortable. We had the clam chowder and the rest of us tried different salads. I had the beat salad which was tender, fresh and absolute perfection. For our main meals – the chicken, fish and duck were excellent. We couldn’t manage room for the Happy Ending tray – but we had the peanut butter and jelly / and an assortment of others ice creams. Don't miss the Commonweatlth"

  • "I don't mind paying a lot for a good meal, but it has to be good and satisfying. While the food was good, the service was horrendous and it's a rip off. Our waiter showed up after 15 minutes and said I'm here - no intro, apology for the wait. Didn't take our order for another 15 minutes. Order a main that doesn't come with anything but is priced like a meal. Got about a cup of steamed snow peas for$9. Most disappointing was dessert - $5 for a small single scoop of ice cream with nothing on it. Not worth it at all. "

  • "This is the second time we have tried Commonwealth. I keep wanting it to be a great foodie place but the main dishes fall a bit short. I have not tried the fish yet so perhaps that is what i should order if there is a next time. So far i have tried the pork chop, lamb steak and flatiron steak. All were less than great and a bit tough or dry. The other parties crab was just ok. On the other hand all the vegetables are always flavorful and cooked just right. ALso, my clam chowder was one of the best i have ever had. The deserts of ice cream and brownie was fantastic. Load up on apps, veggies, and desert I think you will have fun here. I love the location. Fun to walk around in the vibrant square."

  • "A great local eatery. Terrific wait staff and a really excellent assortment of comfort foods, prepared excellently and presented in eminently sharable form. For those who want to dig into the finger foods, the fact that the napkins are dish towels will be a blessing. Went there on an impulse after walking by and had a great time. We'll certainly be back!"

  • "This was our second time at the Commonwealth Market for Brunch. A short but very fun menu. The Sticky Bun with Bacon is a great start to share with the table an all four of us enjoyed or four brunch items. The Bloody Mary with a pickle spear was outstanding."

  • "I was looking forward to Commonwealth as the possibility of a good local restaurant without the frou frou of a farm-to-table angle, or something else cute, just good food. So many overpriced restaurants have popped up in Kendall Square over the last 3 years that fit this bill. Unfortunately, Commonwealth is another one. Nothing spectacular about their food when I went there for dinner recently. But the service is top notch...pleasant and attentive. "

  • "This was our first family visit for brunch and it was very good. We started out with cinnamon sticky buns with bacon on top and cornbread. Both were warm and delicious. We all had different dishes and everyone was very pleased. I would highly recommend brunch to anyone who would like to try something different. Great job by all."

  • "We sat at the table for 10 minutes before flagging down a waiter to order drinks and appetizers. About 45 minutes after our appetizers came, we again had to flag down the waiter to order our entrees, which took 45 minutes to arrive. The food was good, but overpriced. The $25 entrees do not come with a vegetable or side of any sort- but you do have the opportunity to purchase those for an additional $9. With organic carrots being about $1.50/lb at the grocery store or farmer's market, you might expect to receive a bounty of carrots for that price. But you won't. Good food, but not worth the price or time you must forfeit to eat it. "
