Diner Reviews
  • "Work lunch: small menu, above average food (very very good salad, sandwich and fries were just ok) and good beers. Bar tend didn't have items to make a bloody mary, but bottled beer was good. Prices for that area. They are still getting used to the seating rush, so plan an hour, minimal."

  • "The food was great and tables readily available. The menu was very limited however."

  • "This was the second time I've been to Commonwealth. This time we went to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. Everything I've ever had here was delicious - from the cocktails, to the entrees and sides, and especially the desserts. Plus, you feel like you're eating something that's good for you. Even the bread is delicious. It's definitely slightly upscale price-wise, but you will always feel like you got your money's worth."

  • "Five of us were at Commonwealth on a busy Saturday evening. The food was outstanding--I will remember that clam chowder forever! We split a platter of oysters that were amazingly fresh. Everyone loved their entree. The place was bustling but service was perfect. You never had to look for a wait staff person as they were at our table refilling water, taking off plates, bringing food constantly."

  • "My meal was over-salted, hash was not hash, it was pastrami with hashbrowns on top, and the hollandaise sauce broke so it just made the meal greasy. Poached eggs were overcooked as well. The other meal was good, it was the fried chicken and biscuits, also too salted, eggs were also overcooked, but the chicken and sausage gravy was great. Also hard to pass on dollar oysters, and the drinks were great too, just wouldn't go back for the overpriced food"

  • "Little pricey for the decor.. But the food and service was excellent."

  • "Wow! What an outstanding meal, service and environment. We ordered the crab cakes, salad, skate on special, whole bass and short ribs. Sides of asparagus and fingerling potatoes. Everything was perfectly cooked, served hot and colorful. Dessert was banana split. Yummy!!!"

  • "The sandwiches and salads are amazing, great for lunch. The pork belly sandwich is incredible. I don't think I'd go back for dinner based on other reviews. Servers can be a bit slow or inattentive--luck of the draw."

  • "I was very happy with the brunch selection. Portions were extremely large, but the quality of the food didn't suffer as a result."

  • "Ambience, food, and service were excellent. Loved the whole market-fresh feel of the menu with meats from local New England farms such as Pineland Farms in ME. With the restaurant tucked away on a side road, it's unlikely that new patrons would easily spot it on a casual drive, but don't let that take away from it's excellent quality. I'm a very satisfied patron who plans to return in the near future. P.S: the bread was delicious!"

  • "Great food, great service, and good ambience, what more could you want! A little on the pricy side, but well-cooked, well-seasoned, and well-delivered."

  • "Great new restaurant in East Cambridge with a lively scene, delicious and interesting drinks and tasty simple well-prepared food. Menu does not describe how the entrees are prepared (and they do not come with sides) but waitress was detailed and helpful. Not necessarily kid-friendly but they were welcoming and accomodating to our kids."

  • "We all liked the restaurant very much, although my husband did not like the chairs. Our server Devon was especially good. We will be retiring with another group next month."

  • "This was obviously the in place in Kendall Square area. After work crowd and young hipsters. The a la carte pricing made for an expensive meal. The "half chicken" portions looked like they used a very young chicken. And it was greasy and dry. Not worth $21. The side of brussel sprouts though were tasty. The ice cream -- cinnamon honey -- was very good but consisted of a tiny scoop. Not worth the intense noise (no noise damping materials), the nearly "tapas" portions with full entree prices, and feeling like you were in a barn."

  • "Service is great ! The hostess was very accommodating when I had to adjust the time of our reservation due to flight delays of my guests . Love this place"

  • "Brought a bunch of old friends to eat at Commonwealth. Had the chef plan the menu and we just sat back and enjoyed. It was relaxing, fun, and delicious. It included a heaping bowl of mussels and 2 beautiful salads. Skate cheeks, pork and mashed potatoes were the stand outs for the main course that night although the rest was yummy as usual. And the cocktails...we really enjoyed those, not to mention some great wine. I highly suggest your next night out with friends be at Commonwealth."

  • "The country-store-esque entrance room was a fun way to browse around while waiting for our table to be set up. Luckily we already have reservation through Opentable (Thanks!) so the wait was only a few minutes. The space was airy and rustic. The food was amazing. At brunch, the chicken and biscuit was truly as amazing as everyone says. The dollar oysters were fresh. The chilaquiles was nicely portioned without feeling too heavy. The Bloody Mary drink was so beefy good it came with its own side of sausage. Service was a bit slow, not the star of the show."

  • "My wife and I went on a Saturday night at 7:00 pm, were promptly seated and immediately met by an overly perky server. She walked us through the whole menu in detail and although she felt it necessary there wasn't anything too difficult to understand. We each ordered a cocktail, appetizer and main dish with a side and this took 2-1/2 hours before we were finally able to escape. Once the app was served she was nowhere to be found and it took considerable time to locate her and get her attention. Ultimately, the chicken and brussel sprouts were overcooked, the scalloped potatoes were undercooked and the beet salad was unbalanced (too many greens). I love farm to table but for the prices, it needs better service and more complex dishes."

  • "Service was fine, appetizers, salads were the best (interesting flavor combinations), sides were good (cooked well but bland and small portions for the price), main courses just OK."

  • "I live in the neighborhood and have attended Commonwealth a few times and it never disappoints! The food is always immaculate and fresh and the staff are knowledgeable and attentive without being over-powering. I will definitely continue coming here and recommending Commonwealth to my friends!"

  • "First time at Commonwealth but had read a lot of great reviews prior. Went for brunch and was not disappointed. Started with some oysters and had the Chicken and Biscuits which was great! Service was very attentive and liked the atmosphere. It was key to have validated parking in the garage next store...will be back for dinner soon!"

  • "This place is beautiful! Oh goodness, it's really nice. The food was really good. I had the crab cake and then the roasted chicken with broccoli and Mac and cheese. I did find the entire meal a tad too salty, but it wasn't ruined. I finished with the ice cream which was a perfect end to a good meal. It was busy so the service felt a little slow but the space is so bright and airy and the drinks are very good; the time passes enjoyably."

  • "Had a lot of fun. Food was delicious. Oysters served as they should fresh; no low tide specials here. Waiting staff excellent. She knew all about gluten free, wine and oysters. No pressure, a pleasure. Would totally recommend this place."

  • "Great concept, average execution, absurd overpricing throughout the restaurant menu as well as the market. Smart business if you can keep customers, but the food doesnt live up to the price point."

  • "Commonwealth has a cool, laid back atmosphere and the food is great, especially the short rib and parsnips. However, your entree does not come with sides. You have to order $9 sides, which is fine if there are three or more people, but way too much if there are two of you and you want to try more than one side. You end up with a lot of food that you are not going to be able to eat. Also, what's up with the $5 scoop of ice cream? It is actually a single, small scoop. Then, it is $3 to add anything on, even root beer. Overall, this is a good restaurant, but could use some work on their pricing structure. Could we have a smaller, $5 side option?"

  • "That is what you need to order here if you come here for brunch. It says it is served with a side of gym membership and they are not kidding, since it is giant biscuits, with bacon, egg, fried chicken and gravy! So much food, you should share that with someone else, but so worth it. The Chilaquiles were just okay, but the service was great, and they have an awesome pump up early 90's playlist we couldn't get enough of."

  • "The overly salty food showed a chef without the confidence to trust the bold and inviting brunch flavors in both the food and the cocktails (although the "blow it out your glass" cocktail was a bit one dimensional). The drink service was oddly slow ... often up to fifteen minutes for a glass of wine! On the other hand, the dining area was inviting, the server enthusiastic and polite, the pastrami and hash delicious."

  • "Was disappointed in the Marky Marky and the Funky Brunch. There seem to be no reason for the name. I expected more of a connection to the theme. My party was sat at a very awkward table that made it difficult to hear and hold a conversation. Food was okay, but not worth the drive to Cambridge. The waitress was sweet and the service was good. However, not one of my five friends plans to return,"

  • "I worked around the corner for over a year and never went in. On my last day in the area they had a going away lunch at the Commonwealth for me. Let me make this short and say the food was excellent. The sandwich menu was classic, but with really tasty twists. For example, crispy chicken skin on a roast beef sandwich-awesome. I would recommend this place again and I will certainly be back!"

  • "I've been here for dinner and brunch - both are equally amazing!!"

  • "The lovely little market was a pleasant surprise. Though the products are a tad expensive, the options (from olive oil to cheeses to in- house made ice cream) are appealing, and it's an interesting walk thru to get to the restaurant proper. The decor gives a warm yet open feel (love the wood and floor to ceiling glass). Our server was sweet, thoughtful, attentive and helpful. One bite of those parker rolls, and I was hooked. I would have been happy eating nothing more than a half dozen of those little delights, but thankfully, I stayed for real food which was truly yummy- made me hum (I hum when I am happy)."

  • "Coomonwealth has create a great restaurant and country style market . The hostess was very accommodating when we arrived earlier than our reservation. Great new neighborhood spot & will only get better in the summer !"

  • "Great food, great atmosphere -- reservations are a must! The service was terrific; everyone was very friendly. Only thing I'd suggest is to make early reservations since it tends to take a while for you to get your dinner (a 6:30 reservation had dinner on our table by 8:40). Can also be a little challenging to find your waitstaff when you're looking for a refill or want to place your order -- but once they were at your table, they were extremely attentive."

  • "Went here for the first time with a party of 8 from work. Got a reservation easily. The table was great - service was great. The food was tasty - but portions were very small for many of the items relative to the cost. The entree list is pretty limited. The monk fish entree for example - was TINY. The vegetable and starch side dishes were an ok size for 2 or 3 really - but pricey for what you got. A few people ordered ice cream and the serving size was also TINY. So generally - good service, nice atmosphere - but you definitly do not get much for your dollar there. Good wine, beer and cocktail selection."

  • "A great place for brunch with or without your kids. Although my meal was not excellent, I still enjoyed it. I will give them another shot. My kids loved it. Good amount of sunlight-very important during the winter. The restaurant needs to iron out a few wrinkles (ran out of orange juice/my chicken was dried and cold). However, it's location is excellent. During the winter it is near the Kendall Community ice rink. There's a place to rent kayaks and canoes about a minute away. Lots of free parking on Sundays."

  • "The place is fun to try for something new. Great ambience lends itself to a market/coffee shop vibe complete with bar and table seating. At 6:30 we were pretty psyched to see that there were some people already there, but it wasn't overly crowded. This gave us ample time to check out the cool decorating: industrial and hip. Ordered drinks and oysters; a little disappointed that they didn't have wine on tap, but no bigs. Waited an hour for the server to come back to take our dinner order and received little menu description - hey - chicken and fish can be cooked many different ways. Overall were pleased with our meals, which arrived relatively quickly once we got our order in. Overall, fun and good food, but lacking in service."
