With every course I kept saying "I have never had these flavors in my mouth before!" I was delighted and excited at every step. Service was relaxed and dignified - not formal or stuffy. The kitchen crew rocks!!! This is a French Laundry experience at 1/3 the cost - and right here in a Oakland! Can't wait to come back!

Took my hubby here for his Birthday and had an incredible experience! Our server's presentation and knowlege of the food and wine pairings was outstanding, the sommelier did an amazing job picking the pairings, each food course was a work of art with overwhelmingly good flavors, and the staff was pleasant and attentive! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

The courses and wine pairings were wonderful. There were a number of surprises. There was not the egg dish we had come to expect, but every course was exquisite. Two appetizers - an "oyster" snack and savory bread bit served with a sparkling wine gave us a good start. One of the wine pairings was a beer! One a sake. A third of the courses were served by the chef! The rest of the staff were knowledgeable gracious and fun to have around for dinner. If I co afford it, I would dine here every week.

I have been to Commis before and my return dinning experience was just as great as the others. The extremely well prepared and presented dishes by the chef (Pre Fix Menu) tasted exquisite and not knowing what is coming next adds to the experience. The service was excellent and the pace of the meal was just right, not too fast and not too slow. We will return.

We've been eating at Commis since it first opened and the food here is just delicious, creative, wonderful and they continue to evolve. It's hard to say what to expect next other than it's going to be a great experience with an attention to detail to both the flavors and the presentation of the food. If you're into food, the range of techniques, ingredients, detail, taste are just incredible; and, that Commis is in Oakland just makes it that much cooler. For every special occasion, this is where we chose to go.

I was excited to eat at Commis. Lotsa buzz, but disappointing. A few courses measured up, with lots of unbalanced dishes and poorly prepared food. On a chef's tasting menu that is a mystery until the end, don't serve spot prawns raw that aren't fresh. A snapper can be a raw crudo or perfectly seared with translucency; a piece of undercooked fish that hit the grill for a second was a mess.Sauces often underseasoned or overpowering. Beef cheeks and tubers with uni good; lovely service with enthusiastic wine descriptions. Alas, overpriced relative to quality, some bad dishes. Snapper, sunchokes, spot prawn, weird chicken amuse bouche actually bad. I'm not a traditionalist but execution way off.

The dishes were interesting but didn't always work. Some dishes had multiple elements that individually were good but together did not combine well. Other dishes were delicious. Some dishes were too salty for my taste. The service was attentive but needed a little more polish so it wasn't noticeable.

Rather than reading the menu beforehand, we chose to enjoy each of the more than 7 courses as each was presented. This way, we could enjoy each exquisite presentation, bursting with flavors, on its own. The chef and other professionals also went out of their way to ensure our dining and celebration experience was as elegant as they.

Dinner at Commis is always a treat, well thought out menus, spot on flavor combinations, rarely, if ever a miss. Chefs delivering courses and describing them as the plates go down is great way for them to share and connect. This is just one more of the truly personal elements that makes the restaurant so special.

It really was an outstanding meal. We hadn't ben there in a while ( sorry!!) but went back with out-of-town guests who are foodies and we all loved it. Each course was delicious and creative, kept us talking about how they made it, what was in it. And, an important thing for me, despite the many courses of the prix fixe meal, we didn't leave feeling stuffed and uncomfortable as so often happens: the portions were sized perfectly.

If you are looking for a burger or a just a piece of fish, then look elsewhere - perhaps the Chef's other restaurants Boxes and Bells, The Dock at Linden Street or Hawker Faire. Chef James Syhabout's jewel in his restaurant crown is Commis, and rightfully so. But if you don't want high end tasting menu food, there are other options to try from the same chef. Pick what you want and go.

We came to the restaurant expecting to spend too much money and to leave hungry. We were wrong. Our experience turned out to be exceptional. Every course was beautiful, fresh and tasty. Many of the dishes had a surprising mix of flavors. We opted for the wine tasting which we would highly recommend. The service was great as well. This place is expensive, but the experience is well worth it.

I came here for a special occasion a few years back and was blown away by the styling of the food, the tastes, and the ambience. But it seems Commis has undergone some changes since then. Now they play music, and the food, while still beautiful and tasty, has a different feeling and is not as complex as before. It's unfortunate because I came with a different date this time and had really played up my first time here. However I do remember having button mushroom soup, which they still serve, albeit with a different presentation.

Some dishes were hits, some were misses, and since you can't pick and choose, that was disappointing (particularly for the price tag). With a tasting menu the hope is that a dish you wouldn't normally order would still be delicious and make you think "I'm glad I didn't have a choice because I otherwise wouldn't have ordered this delicious dish," but that didn't happen here. The dishes I wouldn't have ordered from a menu, I wouldn't order again. The squab and fish dishes were excellent. The mushroom soup was so salty I couldn't even finish it. Oyster with a lemon-y sorbet thing was underwhelming. Definitely a slight air of condescension from the staff, which I'm not a big fan of.

From the very first dish to the very last sip of wine, Commis delivered just as we anticipated. Taste, texture, and temperature were certainly experienced on a completely different level here. However, the only criticism that is preventing me from providing an Outstanding overall grade, is the host that met us when we first entered the restaurant. Instead of being welcomed with a warm smile and positive energy, we were instead greeted with a nearly scowling face that seemed really disengaged and uninterested. At that point, I was afraid that this bad energy and greeting would set the tone for the remainder of the night. Luckily, it did not. But, in all honesty, we could have done without cold welcome wagon.

The food and wine pairing as well as the service was impeccable. We were at a quiet table perfect for an intimate meal and birthday celebration. The ambience is a contrast to the luxurious menu and service. While we appreciated that the noise level was not distracting as at many restaurants, the decor was a bit austere for our taste. It is pricey and well worth a special occasion but not in our budget for frequent dining.

Who knew that there could possibly be Michelin star restaurant in Oakland? (Not trying to diss restaurants in Oakland) It took my son in L.A. to tell us to go there! Beyond OUTSTANDING. The 8 course dinner was prepared to perfection. The plating for all the dishes were like art pieces. The flavors - indescribable, fantastic. Th interiopr of the restaurant is comfortable and not over the top. Commis has a wonderful, professional staff. This and the French Laundry in this part of the world...you have food heaven on earth.

Every time we dine here we think why has it been so long, but the answer is easy: there is a lot of competition in the Bay Area. Few, however, will provide a three star meal at this price point. Every dish was full of flavor and artistically presented. Commission easily matches Chicago's Schwa, but here you can actually get a reservation.

Special occasion birthday. Fantastic experience. Food was interesting and exquisitely prepared. Nicely spaced. Sommelier was very friendly and informative. If I had to be picky, I would say our server could have been warmer: she didn't smile at all, and even when I requested the check, she put it in front of the man at the table even though I thought I made it clear at the beginning I made the Rez and was treating my bf for his birthday.

Eating at Commis was such an experience! They take food, wine & service to another level of dining. Few restaurants are at this level. Very creative, beautifully presented food. Might seem expensive but it's well worth the money to have this type of dining experience & food. Everyone there performed at the highest level of service. The sommelier was so welcoming & bestowed so much wine knowledge on us.I encourage everyone to do the wine pairings with the meal.Amazing experience of perfect wine & food pairings. We will be back to treat ourselves again. Portions may seem small but I think they are perfect! There were so many delectable bites, we were full & content by the end of our meal. The menu portions are very, very small but visually extremely appealing and, in most cases, an achievement in flavors and of unique combinations - very sophisticated with the food textures well thought out and balanced. This clearly is a place where you need to take time to savor your experience - overall, we took close to 2 1/2 hours on our visit. The staff is very efficient but somehow lacking in warmth. With such a limited menu you would not expect anything else but attention to the diner's needs. Overall clearly a culinary experience but perhaps the atmosphere/ambiance is a bit lacking in warmth - my wife called it "robotic" and I have not found a better term for it. I would give it 5 stars if not for this shortcoming.
