Dinner at Commis is always a treat, well thought out menus, spot on flavor combinations, rarely, if ever a miss. Chefs delivering courses and describing them as the plates go down is great way for them to share and connect. This is just one more of the truly personal elements that makes the restaurant so special.

It really was an outstanding meal. We hadn't ben there in a while ( sorry!!) but went back with out-of-town guests who are foodies and we all loved it. Each course was delicious and creative, kept us talking about how they made it, what was in it. And, an important thing for me, despite the many courses of the prix fixe meal, we didn't leave feeling stuffed and uncomfortable as so often happens: the portions were sized perfectly.

We came to the restaurant expecting to spend too much money and to leave hungry. We were wrong. Our experience turned out to be exceptional. Every course was beautiful, fresh and tasty. Many of the dishes had a surprising mix of flavors. We opted for the wine tasting which we would highly recommend. The service was great as well. This place is expensive, but the experience is well worth it.

I came here for a special occasion a few years back and was blown away by the styling of the food, the tastes, and the ambience. But it seems Commis has undergone some changes since then. Now they play music, and the food, while still beautiful and tasty, has a different feeling and is not as complex as before. It's unfortunate because I came with a different date this time and had really played up my first time here. However I do remember having button mushroom soup, which they still serve, albeit with a different presentation.

Some dishes were hits, some were misses, and since you can't pick and choose, that was disappointing (particularly for the price tag). With a tasting menu the hope is that a dish you wouldn't normally order would still be delicious and make you think "I'm glad I didn't have a choice because I otherwise wouldn't have ordered this delicious dish," but that didn't happen here. The dishes I wouldn't have ordered from a menu, I wouldn't order again. The squab and fish dishes were excellent. The mushroom soup was so salty I couldn't even finish it. Oyster with a lemon-y sorbet thing was underwhelming. Definitely a slight air of condescension from the staff, which I'm not a big fan of.

From the very first dish to the very last sip of wine, Commis delivered just as we anticipated. Taste, texture, and temperature were certainly experienced on a completely different level here. However, the only criticism that is preventing me from providing an Outstanding overall grade, is the host that met us when we first entered the restaurant. Instead of being welcomed with a warm smile and positive energy, we were instead greeted with a nearly scowling face that seemed really disengaged and uninterested. At that point, I was afraid that this bad energy and greeting would set the tone for the remainder of the night. Luckily, it did not. But, in all honesty, we could have done without cold welcome wagon.

The food and wine pairing as well as the service was impeccable. We were at a quiet table perfect for an intimate meal and birthday celebration. The ambience is a contrast to the luxurious menu and service. While we appreciated that the noise level was not distracting as at many restaurants, the decor was a bit austere for our taste. It is pricey and well worth a special occasion but not in our budget for frequent dining.

Who knew that there could possibly be Michelin star restaurant in Oakland? (Not trying to diss restaurants in Oakland) It took my son in L.A. to tell us to go there! Beyond OUTSTANDING. The 8 course dinner was prepared to perfection. The plating for all the dishes were like art pieces. The flavors - indescribable, fantastic. Th interiopr of the restaurant is comfortable and not over the top. Commis has a wonderful, professional staff. This and the French Laundry in this part of the world...you have food heaven on earth.

This was the worst meal I have had in 5 years. Everything was over salted, nothing was fresh, and the wine pairing was of the poorest wens I have ever tasted. You would not want to eat here no matter the price but the tabs was $400.00 for two. Not worth $10.00 or your time! I will never go there again.

Every time we dine here we think why has it been so long, but the answer is easy: there is a lot of competition in the Bay Area. Few, however, will provide a three star meal at this price point. Every dish was full of flavor and artistically presented. Commission easily matches Chicago's Schwa, but here you can actually get a reservation.

Special occasion birthday. Fantastic experience. Food was interesting and exquisitely prepared. Nicely spaced. Sommelier was very friendly and informative. If I had to be picky, I would say our server could have been warmer: she didn't smile at all, and even when I requested the check, she put it in front of the man at the table even though I thought I made it clear at the beginning I made the Rez and was treating my bf for his birthday.

Eating at Commis was such an experience! They take food, wine & service to another level of dining. Few restaurants are at this level. Very creative, beautifully presented food. Might seem expensive but it's well worth the money to have this type of dining experience & food. Everyone there performed at the highest level of service. The sommelier was so welcoming & bestowed so much wine knowledge on us.I encourage everyone to do the wine pairings with the meal.Amazing experience of perfect wine & food pairings. We will be back to treat ourselves again. Portions may seem small but I think they are perfect! There were so many delectable bites, we were full & content by the end of our meal. This is one restaurant you need to experience. Superb!

The menu portions are very, very small but visually extremely appealing and, in most cases, an achievement in flavors and of unique combinations - very sophisticated with the food textures well thought out and balanced. This clearly is a place where you need to take time to savor your experience - overall, we took close to 2 1/2 hours on our visit. The staff is very efficient but somehow lacking in warmth. With such a limited menu you would not expect anything else but attention to the diner's needs. Overall clearly a culinary experience but perhaps the atmosphere/ambiance is a bit lacking in warmth - my wife called it "robotic" and I have not found a better term for it. I would give it 5 stars if not for this shortcoming.

With new décor and super comfy seats at the Chef's counter this is hands down the finest dining experience in this part of the world. With a superb wine list it is the pairings that border on perfection-the finest I've yet experienced. Champagne with pacific halibut and Chateaunuf du Pape with red beetroot with blueberry vinegar and smoked cheese and ash were the standouts. Many new faces that are even better than the founding service staff-if that is possible. Chef James has created a masterpiece well worth repeated visits over time.

This is the third time I have eaten here, and it has become my favorite restaurant in the Bay Area. The food is superb, and each dish is beautifully presented. Service is unhurried and attentive without being intrusive. I took friends here, and about a month later we ate at Chez Panisse. Our verdict was that, hands down, Commis was the clear winner. There are deft hands at work in the kitchen, and it shows in the overall dining experience.

We loved the food and presentation...inventive creative and unexpected!!! The only problem is that both my wife and I left the dinner still kind of hungry. We generally do not eat much at restaurants...mostly sharing an entree. With the prefix at $95.00 each we both felt like the meal was missing some protein. We loved the restaurant but felt like it disappointed in the satisfaction area.

My girlfriend and I had the tasting menu with (thoughtful) wine pairings and were thoroughly impressed. Every dish was excellent, but three stood out. One was a warm peach soup with mustard leaf ice, pickled fennels, and almonds prepared like crème fraîche. The contrasts - of textures, tastes, and temperatures - were striking. The soup was heterogenous, so you would get a single bite that would change from smooth peach to crystalline mustard ice as you ate. Rather the opposite was a superbly balanced dish of pickled beetroot, thick blueberry vinegar, smoked cheese, lemonthyme, and "vegetable ash" sprinkled on the plate. Last was a simple "mushroom tea" that transported us both back to our childhoods, eating Campbell's soup from the stove.
