This was more of a food experience than a meal (which is the only way we could justify the price). The menu is fixed and, for us, consisted of 12 different plates (they called it 7 courses). We also purchased the beverage pairings. Every dish was a small taste of something wonderful, fresh, sometimes complex and often unexpected. The beverage pairings were amazing. They included some wonderful wines but also some beer, sake and unusual wines styles that enhanced both the food and the beverage by being paired. It would be a mistake to skip the pairings. The servers were fabulous at describing the food, the ingredients, and the cooking.

If it could be within the realm of the possible...our evening at Commis was even better than our previous two experiences..the pride, the quality, the passion for perfection only improves...the "beverage pairing" could not have been more "on note"....much the same impact as an evening at the symphony...

We've eaten at many great restaurants in the Bay and elsewhere. But no place we've ever been, fine dining or casual, has been as creative, interesting, and playful as the food we ate at Commis. We couldn't believe how fascinating the experience was. And the sommelier was the best we've ever encountered. Intensely charismatic, knowledgable, but also fun and relaxed. It took us a few years of living in Oakland to try Commis, and we are now wracked with regret.

I often struggle with the decision of where to spend my hard earned money, especially when SF offers so many Michelin starred gems. But Commis impressed once again, proving that it really deserves its star. Wonderful service, innovative flavor profiles, but the star of the night was once again the drink pairing.

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here. I left a note to the restaurant about this special occasion when I made my reservation. When we arrived, we got a table with some privacy and a card signed by all the staff. That's a very nice touch. The food was absolutely amazing. We also ordered the drink pairing. The drinks really brought out the flavor of the dishes. I rarely give 5-star ratings, but Commis has earned all five stars.

A friend had recommended Commis for the last 3-4 years but never got a chance to try it, so finally got a reservation and was not disappointed at all. However, the portion does run small, so an after dinner run to a second restaurant/snack should be in your plan. But we are here for the quality and not the quantity.

My wife and I ended up at Commis as a rather last-minute attendance. I booked the restaurant on Thursday evening previous. Even though we were early, as soon as we arrived, we were seated and welcomed. Service was friendly, and congenial. There is no choice of menu, it is prix-fixe. We opted for the wine pairings as well with our meal. Everything offered was a taste teaser; it all danced on our tongues, and the wines paired very well; the sommelier very knowledgeable. Some of the wines served were over 20 years old, and most unusual. We will visit again, when we need our palates teased...

We (four people) had the tasting menu - "the chef's discretion" - which is the only choice. Fine. We knew that from the start, as half our table had been there before. But, as they won't tell you what you are about to eat, we had the wine pairing. So the wine list may be excellent, but how do you choose wines when you don't know the menu? The seven courses were, with one or two exceptions, tired and bland. The beer & saki "wine" paring did little to improve the dishes. The exceptions were a guinea hen ballotine and carrot, parsnips, apricot tart "steeped"? in marigold petals and a pluot sorbet with almonds and honey cream. Not so fresh were the scallops and the bream. The service was pretentious and at the end of the meal, downright rude.

The courses and wine pairings were wonderful. There were a number of surprises. There was not the egg dish we had come to expect, but every course was exquisite. Two appetizers - an "oyster" snack and savory bread bit served with a sparkling wine gave us a good start. One of the wine pairings was a beer! One a sake. A third of the courses were served by the chef! The rest of the staff were knowledgeable gracious and fun to have around for dinner. If I co afford it, I would dine here every week.

We've been eating at Commis since it first opened and the food here is just delicious, creative, wonderful and they continue to evolve. It's hard to say what to expect next other than it's going to be a great experience with an attention to detail to both the flavors and the presentation of the food. I was excited to eat at Commis. Lotsa buzz, but disappointing. A few courses measured up, with lots of unbalanced dishes and poorly prepared food. On a chef's tasting menu that is a mystery until the end, don't serve spot prawns raw that aren't fresh. A snapper can be a raw crudo or perfectly seared with translucency; a piece of undercooked fish that hit the grill for a second was a mess.Sauces often underseasoned or overpowering. Beef cheeks and tubers with uni good; lovely service with enthusiastic wine descriptions. Alas, overpriced relative to quality, some bad dishes. Snapper, sunchokes, spot prawn, weird chicken amuse bouche actually bad. I'm not a traditionalist but execution way off.

The dishes were interesting but didn't always work. Some dishes had multiple elements that individually were good but together did not combine well. Other dishes were delicious. Some dishes were too salty for my taste. The service was attentive but needed a little more polish so it wasn't noticeable.

It really was an outstanding meal. We hadn't ben there in a while ( sorry!!) but went back with out-of-town guests who are foodies and we all loved it. Each course was delicious and creative, kept us talking about how they made it, what was in it. And, an important thing for me, despite the many courses of the prix fixe meal, we didn't leave feeling stuffed and uncomfortable as so often happens: the portions were sized perfectly.

If you are looking for a burger or a just a piece of fish, then look elsewhere - perhaps the Chef's other restaurants Boxes and Bells, The Dock at Linden Street or Hawker Faire. Chef James Syhabout's jewel in his restaurant crown is Commis, and rightfully so. But if you don't want high end tasting menu food, there are other options to try from the same chef. Pick what you want and go.

I came here for a special occasion a few years back and was blown away by the styling of the food, the tastes, and the ambience. But it seems Commis has undergone some changes since then. Now they play music, and the food, while still beautiful and tasty, has a different feeling and is not as complex as before. It's unfortunate because I came with a different date this time and had really played up my first time here. However I do remember having button mushroom soup, which they still serve, albeit with a different presentation.

Some dishes were hits, some were misses, and since you can't pick and choose, that was disappointing (particularly for the price tag). With a tasting menu the hope is that a dish you wouldn't normally order would still be delicious and make you think "I'm glad I didn't have a choice because I otherwise wouldn't have ordered this delicious dish," but that didn't happen here. The dishes I wouldn't have ordered from a menu, I wouldn't order again. The squab and fish dishes were excellent. The mushroom soup was so salty I couldn't even finish it. Oyster with a lemon-y sorbet thing was underwhelming. Definitely a slight air of condescension from the staff, which I'm not a big fan of.

From the very first dish to the very last sip of wine, Commis delivered just as we anticipated. Taste, texture, and temperature were certainly experienced on a completely different level here. However, the only criticism that is preventing me from providing an Outstanding overall grade, is the host that met us when we first entered the restaurant. Instead of being welcomed with a warm smile and positive energy, we were instead greeted with a nearly scowling face that seemed really disengaged and uninterested. At that point, I was afraid that this bad energy and greeting would set the tone for the remainder of the night. Luckily, it did not. But, in all honesty, we could have done without cold welcome wagon.

The food and wine pairing as well as the service was impeccable. We were at a quiet table perfect for an intimate meal and birthday celebration. The ambience is a contrast to the luxurious menu and service. While we appreciated that the noise level was not distracting as at many restaurants, the decor was a bit austere for our taste. It is pricey and well worth a special occasion but not in our budget for frequent dining.

Every time we dine here we think why has it been so long, but the answer is easy: there is a lot of competition in the Bay Area. Few, however, will provide a three star meal at this price point. Every dish was full of flavor and artistically presented. Commission easily matches Chicago's Schwa, but here you can actually get a reservation.

If I had to be picky, I would say our server could have been warmer: she didn't smile at all, and even when I requested the check, she put it in front of the man at the table even though I thought I made it clear at the beginning I made the Rez and was treating my bf for his birthday.
