COMMERCEWest village gemSo glad this La Grange followup is here to stay. Top notch cuisine in a rarefied art deco renovation of this west village landmark. A bit noisy and no space even to walk between tables but the food and the fellow diners were new yorks finest5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMVery nice for special occasionsHad a great mothers' day celebration though we were rushed in the end to make space fort the next customers. Food was delicious and service very attentive.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMFresh, unusual & deliciousThis was my fourth time eating at Commerce and one of the best experiences yet. I like to consider myself a foodie and love trying new things and unique flavor combinations, and I can always count on at least a few items on Commerce's menu that I've never had before. I was excited to try the rabbit rillette (like a pâté, the knowledgeabe waitress explained) and sweetbreads with, lima beans, asparagus, bacon and a soy glaze; neither apps disappointed. While I was sad that the kitchen had run out of the pork schnitzel (which I've had before and is both simple and delicious), the pappardelle with lamb ragu was fresh and delicious. I wish I had room at the end for the amazing coconut cake but I would've exploded all over the restaurant.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food and barFood was outstanding as was the bar menu and wine list. The cramped table and loud dining room was a bit uncomfortable the superior menu made up for it.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMAwesome food, awesome service.Awesome food, awesome service. Only thing I was unhappy with was having to wait to be seated til 8:15pm, despite having a 7:45pm reservation.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMi have eaten several timesi have eaten several times at Commerce. The food it always great, great service and atmosphere.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMShould be on everyone's short listClassic but modern mix of foodie-New York experience.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMBetter and BetterI know its hard to believe but Commerce gets better and better. Need I say more?5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMLove This PlaceWeather it's dinner or weekend brunch this is the place to go in the West Village. There are many other good rest in my neighborhood but I find myself going back here again and again.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMSuper nightI loved the feel of this place. The ambiance was fun and friendly. And the food was delicious. Especially the bread basket! Really great evening.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMWent for the first time thisWent for the first time this weekend, and it was excellent! Had 9:30 reservations, but didn't sit until 10pm, which was frustrating, but once we were seated, we had a wonderful experience. The food was fantastic! Definitely try the sweet potato tortellini, short rib ravioli and the coconut cake!4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMgreat!Amazing food. 7:45pm reservation. Didn't sit until 8:30pm, but didn't mind since we had a drink at the bar. I heat reservations run late all the time. Still highly recommend.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMCommerce never disappoints.Commerce never disappoints. One of my favorite places in NYC. The food is always excellent & cooked to perfection!4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat dinner and service.Great dinner and service. Not romantic or intimate or particularly attractive . Lighting bright. Noise overwhelming4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMWe started with the hemachiWe started with the hemachi cewichi and it was great! The famouse rosted chicken (Best in NY?)was a little bit overcooked. Overall a splendid night for two swedes, on a short visit to NY.4/22/2013 12:00:00 AMAwesome food - a little wait timeThe food was pretty awesome. The biggest complaint that everyone has is around the wait time beyond the reservation time. We were seated at around 11:00 although our reservation was 10:15. Other than that, the bread basket, apps, and Steak Diane were awesome! I guarantee this place would be a 4.5 star if they can get the reservation times locked down better. Either way, the staff were super apologetic and pretty sweet.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMOverall excellent place. WentOverall excellent place. Went for my wife's birthday, extraordinary food and they gave us a wonderful table. Couldn't be happier! The bar is great for 1-2 pre-dinner drinks too!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst time at 50 CommerceFirst time at 50 Commerce since it took over from Grange Hall many years ago. We were sad to see Grange Hall go but thrilled that 50 Commerce is delicious. The drinks were amazing and the food was delicious. Looking forward to going back.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMI had the tortellini for appetizerI had the tortellini for appetizer and short rib ravioli , they were amazing. I would go there just for the bread alone. The whole staff from the hostesses to the waitress were very friendly. I though on Sunday night and its located in a quiet neighborhood street,we would be the only one there, but I was wrong the restaurant was almost full. Its definately a romantic neighborhood Gem. We are very excited to discover this great restaurant in the west village. Parking was very easy on bleecker st , a beautiful short 5 min. walk.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMOur first time here. The best!4/11/2013 12:00:00 AMCommerce is one of the placesCommerce is one of the places that you can't stop going back to. While I recommend the Sea Bass and Pork Chop, make sure you leave room for the best coconut cake in the world.4/8/2013 12:00:00 AMThird time this year...eachThird time this year...each was a great experience...this time with 2 couples from out of town who enjoyed being in the West Village and having a unique dining experience4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMCozy restaurant with deliciousCozy restaurant with delicious food and excellent service.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMA former speakeasy sparkles! This was our first time at this little gem that was a former speak easy! With the shoemakers' shop now long gone to hide the bootlegging flappers, this find combines first rate fresh food, their own bakery with little surprise breads at each reach, original pieces combined with modern features and a staff that is professional, friendly and top of the heap! What a pleasant unexpected surprise. Ask for the cozy little table for two in the corner. Great views and very romantic. We just loved it! Chef greeted us as we left for the theatre. This is going to be a mainstay in our repertoire!4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMhad an 8 45 reservation andhad an 8 45 reservation and did not geT sat till 10 p.m. that was the only bump in an otherwise stellar meal4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had excellent service,We had excellent service, from the waiter and the sommelier. The food was delicious. A wonderful experience.4/2/2013 12:00:00 AMWIsh you were here!Excellent everything! Only wish it were around the corner from my West SIde apartment3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMImaginative, intimate, and friendlyDelicious and imaginative home-style cooking in an intimate setting with friendly service. The noise level can be deafening at Sunday brunch, but it's worth enduring it.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent dining experience.Excellent dining experience. Great wine list. Worth a detour for us eastsiders. Hope to return soon.3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a wonderful eveningWe had a wonderful evening at Commerce. the food was fantastic and service was top notch. Definitely worth a try.3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMWe really only went becauseWe really only went because it was convenient to the theatre. BUT - thank goodness we did!! The food was amazing, and the whole experience was wonderful! This proved to be a very special place that we will frequent whether we have theatre tickets or not!3/28/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food and atmosphere,Great food and atmosphere, very nice waiter. Very comfortable. The chicken for two (order immediately when seated if you want this, it takes 40 minutes) was excellent, very good deviled eggs.3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMnoisy but amazingwe arrived earlier than the res, we were seated right away, but right by the bar which was packed and I mean packed. It was hard for servers to get through and the acoustics r terrible, noisy like crazy!
that's the bad news.
The good news is the food was outstanding, from the yellowtail tartar to the oysters,to the short rib ravioli,to an outstanding Steak Diane.
Followed by great coconut cake and a dark chocolate souffle. The servers were great. The servers rarely got the plating down correctly, but who cares, the food was so great, the noise disapated quickly.
I will return, but during the week and I will make sure I am not seated by the bar. Excellent food!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMWe mentioned in our reservationWe mentioned in our reservation notes, that we would be coming in for lunch after getting married so we wanted a cozy corner table. The happily accommodated us and the server surprised us with complimentary champagne!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMI had one of the best lunchesI had one of the best lunches I've ever had last Friday. Oddly, we were one of only 3 tables in the place at 1 pm. But it was a delicious meal consisting of a wonderful egg white omelette with great stuffing and little side things and a small portion of fried chicken and biscuit. We shared both plus a delicious coconut cake and were very satisfied. Service was excellent. My companion, an older , widely traveled lady, had never been before and was very impressed3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMCommerce was our last diningCommerce was our last dining experience in New York and we visited some great restaurants. There were 4 of us and we rated Commerce the best. (Keep in mind we had dinner at the 4 Seasons, Dovetail, Becco and brunch at the Bryant Park Grill and the Blue Water Grill.) So that will tell you how much we loved Commerce.3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMSunday dinner gemSunday is my favorite time here, it's full as it usual but with a slightly quieter crowd. It is pleasantly abuzz, which is nice on a Sunday...you want to kick of the week with some energy!3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had dinner Saturday nightWe had dinner Saturday night to celebrate my partner's birthday and Commerce was bustling. He had called in advance to see if they were serving sweetbreads on the menu since it was not on their online menu. He had had them before and they were absolutley cooked to perfection. They said it is not a regular menu item but they would have it available for him. That tells you what you get from this very very special place. As it turns out, they had it on the menu as one of the nightly specials. What a great birthday gift! Everything from the delicious food to the knowledgeable wine steward to the friendly and well-versed wait staff makes Commerce so so good. Yes, the atmosphere is energetic, the volume loud at times, however it all works!3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMExceeded all my expectations.Exceeded all my expectations. We were on a tight time table and they made sure we were in and out without feeling rushed. I will certainly go back.3/14/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were at a disadvantageWe were at a disadvantage because there was a large GROUP party there and it was VERY noisy where we were. That being said, the staff was phenomenal and the food excellent. The staff paid attention to a gluton-free menu that we had asked about on the telephone confirmation call. We truly enjoyed it.3/12/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic restaurant. TheFantastic restaurant. The bread basket is sinful as is the Coconut Cake. Have eaten there many times and it does not disappoint. We go on the early side as it gets loud.3/11/2013 12:00:00 AMFantasticTime travel to 1930's New York doesn't get better than this. Perfect atmosphere with delicious food to boot. Our waiter was fantastic and made sure we were served in good time for our curtain at Cherry Lane Theatre next door. A treat.2/21/2013 12:00:00 AMMaking prosaic things anything butEating dinner here really gave this restaurant a chance to shine. I had had brunch here before, but dinner was very special in a way that brunch somehow couldn't be.
I was impressed by the kitchen's ability to take familiar-seeming things and make them more than I would have expected. Their bread, for example, is unusually good. And their green salad -- a grouping of flavorful leaves that almost seemed to be "curated" to surprise the palate. When is the last time I raved about a green salad???
The main challenge is finding this place. If you're not local or haven't been before, take extra precautions!11/27/2012 12:00:00 AM
