A word from COMMERCE
Commerce, nestled in the heart of Greenwich Village, is an homage to old New York. The historic space that formerly housed the beloved Grange Hall has been restored by artisan craftsmen. The interior features murals by artist David Joel, restored chestnut booths & a stunning art deco Brunswick bar circa 1941. Owned by Tony Zazula—a founder of Montrachet—& Chef Harold Moore, Commerce presents a contemporary American menu combining global flavors & classic ingredients such as oysters, chicken & steak. Formerly the Executive Chef of Montrachet & Chef de Cuisine of March, Chef Moore brings years of experience working in New York City’s top kitchens, such as Daniel, Jean Georges, & Mercer Kitchen. Moore’s menu is casual yet sophisticated & belies the complex construction of flavors & textures that are telling of his extensive training. New York ObserverContinued

  • "Is success going to Commerce's head? It has been one if my favirite restaurants for several years. But I was disappointed to see the rise in prices. Also we felt we were being really rushed in spite of the fact that we were the only customers when we arrived. I had made a very early reservation to avoid this. That said, the pork schnitzel and avocado toast were fabulous."

  • "Went to Commerce on an early Saturday evening. The food was - as always - delicious! They start you off with a variety of rolls and soft salted butter. I had the veal meatballs, which were moist and tender. My partner started with the salad with the manchego cheese. It was so fresh, it tasted like summer! His entree was the ricotta gnocchi, which melted in the mouth! Our waitress was delightful yet professional. There was enough wait staff and front-of-room staff. Our reservation was not only honored, but we got there a little early and were seated immediately. From the bar to the dining, it was an wonderful experience."

  • "I am from California and try to go here on every trip to NYC. The place captures the vibe of the West Village, great food, excellent experience. Tables for two may be a bit small but a small price to pay for a terrific food experience. Do try the coconut cake, it's as good as it gets. My wife has been trying to get the recipe forever."

  • "This place is so cramped that even their own staff has a hard time getting around. A server spilled a dish all over the back of my friend's chair! They wiped the chair down quickly but he had oil stains all over the back of his shirt. Finally towards the end of the meal the manager came over to say they would take care of the dry cleaning but surprisingly didn't even offer up anything else to compensate for almost ruining his dinner (not even 1 drink!). Service is mediocre, but food was pretty good. Our table had foie gras, steak tartar & oysters to start. Foie gras was like butter in my mouth. I had veal meatballs which were okay. But my friends did enjoy the gnocchi and pork chop. Would come again but wouldn't go out of my way."

  • "My husband and I went to Commerce on our last night in New York. What a perfect decision it was! The staff is delightful. We were very well taken of.....the menu was varied and unique. My husband had the short rib ravioli and has not stopped talking about how fabulous it was...we are "foodies" so we really appreciate good food and presentation. Commerce had both. I had the pork chop that was served beautifully with vegetables some of which were pureed and a sauce that melted in my mouth. Don't miss this dining experience!!"

  • "Although the food was wonderful and the restaurant itself beautiful I found it very odd that the restaurant has a policy of not bringing a bread basket until drinks are ordered & you must also order your appetizer ANd entree at the same time!they refused to let us eat the many appetizers we wanted to order and see what we felt like eatting after that.strange policy that made me feel uncomfortable"

  • "Saw some bad reviews after making the reservation and was nervous. Thanfully I could not have been more pleased with my experience. Service was as friendly as could be and the braised beef ravioli is one of the best dishes I have had in the city. Outside is unassuming but inside is quaint and in a great neighborhood."

  • "Commerce hits it all correctly; excellent food, attentive, kind service, cool setting, with the ambience of an 'old' restaurant. Very loud if the restaurant is full."

  • "My second visit - I love those deviled eggs! Had the Steak Diane this time and was not disappointed. Also enjoyed my salad (with every kind of leaf imaginable) and manchego cheese. Our server was very helpful. I did wish they had more wine by the glass - only 4 choices for each type and nothing I liked in two trips, yet an extensive list by the bottle. The avocado toast is nothing special, really. Had no room for dessert, but saw the "birthday cake" at another table. Looked scrumptious. There is something with bananas and nilla wafers ... Next time I need to remember to save room. If you've never been to Commerce, the location alone should entice you. One of my favorite streets in NYC."

  • "Commerce is one of our favorite places. The murals and copper plates designed for the space, along with windows onto a green space, and gorgeous art deco lamps, makes this one of the most elegant spots in the Village. We went for our anniversary, joining other families celebrating something - a favorite destination for many of us. The food is just outstanding in every way. They're known for their bread baskets, desserts, entrees - all just delicious. Salads and vegetables have that special garden taste, making me believe produce can be tasty. We also find their wines to be very good, and not too expensive. Go - try Commerce!"

  • "We celebrated Father's Day on Monday evening at Commerce. There were 6 of us and we were seated at a very small round table near the entrance. The tables are so close together that I had to move my chair a few times as other diners got in and out of the booth next to us. The service was mediocre; one of us got the Steak Diane and we had to ask for a steak knife. The noise level was very loud."

  • "Impressed by the quality and the service. Very good wine by the glass, too, which I like because one glass is usually enough for me. Should have written this review months ago, but I still remember how happy I was after my meal, how impressed my visitor was, and that I need to go back! I was very upset when Grange Hall closed, but at least this is a worthy successor. Also, I LOVE that spot in the village. Great block - so nice to go there."

  • "COMMERCE ROCKS....AGAIN. This place is great. The cocktails are amazing. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food is fantastic. The raw hamachi appetizer was better than any sushi place I've been to...All of our pastas were fresh and masterfully prepared. This repeat visit was just as good if not better than the first. Commerce is the real deal, and not killer expensive. LOVE THIS PLACE!"

  • "We had a terrific experience at Commerce. We loved the great variety of menu choices and the food was delicious. Commerce is located on one of the nicest streets in Manhattan and is worth a visit just to see the location. Also, we had dessert at a nearby bakery "Milk and Cookies." I'm sure Commerce has great dessert but M and C was amazing."

  • "The restaurant is nestled into one of Greenwich Village's most charming streets. Inside, the wonderful murals and attention to other details of the decor and the attentive staff made dining here to celebrate my friend's birthday the perfect choice for a special occasion. I recommend the Spring vegetables appetizer, the meatballs, the chocolate pudding and the sloe gin fizz cocktails, all excellent. We will certainly return and try other dishes. For a quiet dining experience, go early because the space is small and our table was close to the bar. "

  • "We came for brunch. The restaurant is in a great location. I had a few conversations by phone and was a little concerned about the service ( it wasn't rude but not exactly friendly on the phone). When we got there the service was great. The menu was unique"

  • "my experience at Commerce was by far my worst dining experience in the city. They were over an hour late seating us. The service was embarrassingly awful and they had crammed so many tables into the restaurant that I couldn't hear a thing or get out of the table. I have lived in NYC for 10 years and never written a bad review of any restaurant ever. This was the absolute worst. I would never go back and would encourage others that value their time to avoid it as well. I told the manager on the way out that I was very unhappy and he promised to call to discuss what had happened and he just never bothered...I have to say I was not surprised they lacked follow up skills as well. "

  • "I Love COMMERCE. The only downside is that it can get very noisy - the acoustics are not great. However, the cuisine, the service and the overall atmosphere is exceptional - which makes up for how noisy it can get. This is a wonderful restaurant - especially nice if you want to give visitors a sense of the charm of the West village. We had a really terrific waiter too - who really added to the most recent experience."

  • "The food is excellent. The desserts wonderful, especially the coconut cake and my husband says the chocolate soufflé is too. More than three people cannot hear each other very well. However, we had eight one time so there were collections of conversation. The second time, three and it was intimate enough to really talk about life. The food is truly exceptional and our chosen wine very good. Highly recommend the salmon with beets and quinoa. Situated in a lovely tiny street with Cherry Lane Theatre nearby, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Margaret Mead's spirits just around the corner at 75 1/2 Bedford, some of the best of The Village feel. The service is magically attentive, yet sensitive."

  • "Went here early on a Saturday night (read 5:30pm) and the place was fairly empty other than some patrons at the bar. We were a party of 6, which looks like it might be the biggest party they can sit as our table was a makeshift mismatch and everything else was set up for parties of 4 or 2. Food was excellent, some of the best in the city. The service, however, was lacking. They weren't very diligent, which is funny since they weren't serving anybody else at the time. To be honest, this didn't even bother us as the food more than made up for it."

  • "Our second visit to COMMERCE but definitely not the last. As others have mentioned, the pleasure begins with maybe the best bread basket we have ever been served. I had the pork chop which was outstanding, though a small portion of it was more rare than some people might like. I have no problem with it. My wife had the spring vegetable green curry which was delicious. The scene at the bar was loud and jostling but calmed down around 9:30 or so. Service was prompt, efficient, and blessedly not "I'm your best friend tonight, what are WE having". The murals are an added joy. "

  • "The decor , food and service are fabulous. Food prep is both innovative and comforting at the same time. Now ,if they could only install carpeting or ceiling tiles to absorb some of the cacophony, the restaurant would be perfect."

  • "Commerce was recommended to me by daughter, who is a restaurant owner in Portland, Oregon. I was in NYC on business with my client and I took her and her mother here for Mother's Day Brunch. It was amazing. Loved the ambiance, the food was incredible and I even got to meet Harold, who is an absolute doll and so "down to earth". I will definitely go back here every time I'm in NYC."

  • "I always enjoy commerce. love the chicken and the vegetable appetizer. Unfortunately, I ordered wrong. Did not care for the spaghetti carbonara. Pasta was not spaghetti it was more like Ramadan noodles. Definitely returning chicken next visit!"

  • "What to say, on the plus side, the food was very good, the staff once seated was very friendly and they waived the corkage fee. On the minus side we arrived at 7:40 for our 7:30 reservation and were seated at 9:10. The bartender said this happens every Saturday night. The hostess looked like she was a nervous wreck as a result and whoever determines how to book the place should be fired but since people stay and the place turns a lot of tables three times he probably gets a raise. VERY NOISEY also, like yell to talk. AVOID on SATURDAY. Go Wednesday."

  • "I've been here many times but not on Saturday. Usually a romantic, sedate restaurant where the food and service is always impeccable, it was complete chaos and way below the standard I have come to expect. A 9:30 pm reservation turned into an 11 pm one and it was so loud, it was impossible to hear anyone in our party. The waitress was so over the night, she forgot our wine order completely, didn't bother to apologize and kept trying to clear our plates because we were seated so late and the kitchen wanted to leave. Speaking of the food, it was well below par and it really disappointed me because I was with a well known Chef from Toronto who I had been talking up the food to. Oh well, Saturday night in NYC I guess..."

  • "We'd been recommended Commerce from two foodies. Initially, the crammed, noisy feel was startling, but it quickly became apparent that this was the place friends reconnected. Tables merged to neighborhoods. With food like this, it wasn't hard to agree with their choice. West Coast visitors, we were drawn in, privileged to look behind the bustle and get a glimpse of why it's fun to live in Manhattan. Thank you!"

  • "fun night at commerce - 2nd time there and although the crowd has become a little touristy(you can tell from the mid american dress) still good place. waiter(born and bread in nyc) was great! the only complaint i have is the managing of the bar - they get liqour deliveries on fridays - so thursday night(THIS IS A BIG OUT TO DINNER) they run out of selections - TITOS VODKA WAS OUT AS WELL AS BELEVEDERE VODKA RAN OUT DURING OUR MEAL) its a vibrant bar scene and a place like this needs to make sure they are fully stocked - this was VERY DISSAPOINTING - food was great! scene was fun"

  • "Delicious food, superb decor, very helpful service but all that is lost by the greed of the management to pack the place up to ridiculous level. New Yorker know something about confined places, packed subway, Christmas sidewalk at Rockefeller Center but try Commerce and your favorite sport bar will feel like a walk around a lake upstate New York. Patrons shouldn't have to choose between having bread or water because the table is too small."
