Diner Reviews
  • "We have been coming here for 30 years. On vacation in Tampa and of course we must go to the Columbia. We had a great lunch. Sangria (white) Salad( must have) Cuban soup must have plus two appetizers. Love it. Romantic for us. "

  • "The building is beautiful, but that's were it ends. We were sitting in the atrium, the tables are way to close together. We had two waiters, both didn't care too much. Dirty dishes on the table for a long time. Food was disappointing, Paella salty. We will not go back. "

  • "Over the years food quality has slipped, however it still is a must visit when in Tampa"

  • "Excellent experience at the Colombian Restaurant, truly enjoyed the ambiance, history and comfortable atmosphere that the Colombian offered. Food was very good and the service was excellent. Recommend the fish or any of the seafood options! Delish!"

  • "The Columbia is a favorite for visiting 'out-of-towners' as well as a nice place to go with local friends and family. The food is consistently good and the service is always very attentive, even when the restaurant is busy, which is usually is. Our group enjoyed a combination of dishes from vegetarian paella to the ropa vieja. The flavors we great and not over seasoned. We had several appetizers including the Chorizo & onions, which was very tasty. For dessert we enjoyed key lime pie, chocolate cake, and an light and sweet flan. The service this evening was very good and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. It was a memorable experience for our visitors from Connecticut!"

  • "The Columbia is a favorite dining spot for my husband and myself. Recently spent a dinner out with friends there; we were greeted promptly by our wait staff, who returned with great cocktails from the bar within moments. This expert team made sure our table was kept clean between courses. The pre-meal Cuban bread was piping hot and served with delicious salted, softened butter. Dinner was small tapas served on tiered platters - delicious as always. Signature El Floridita Daquiri is a delight, not too sweet and very refreshing. And deceptively potent, proceed carefully! An Ybor City original, highly recommended for folks traveling to Tampa, or residents hosting out of town guests. "

  • "I have lived in Tampa most of my life and have dined at the Columbia since I was a child in the 50's. After an absence of three years while living in Ohio we returned to Tampa. One of the first places I wanted to go was the Columbia. The sangria is divine and my grouper grilled with crab meat topping was delicious. My husband ordered the filet saltiado which was also just right. The service was very attentive and friendly. I love this restaurant and am never disappointed."

  • "I think the Columbia is a great restaurant and tremendously valued in the Tampa area. I generally have a good experience and their table staff are commendable. My last visit unfortunately was less than ideal. I had a reservation for 1:00p and showed up at 12:45p and was told to wait at the bar and that they would call us which is just fine. 45 min later they had forgotten us, thought we were a no show and told us that they had called us but thought we were not there. When we told them that we had checked in they said we hadn't. So finally we pointed at the person told us to go to the bar and she said yes you're right you had in fact checked in. The whole experience was a little frustrating and not the way you'd want to start a meal. "

  • "Awesome place. Paid the extra for Flamenco show which was fun. Have previously dined here but this was a first for the show. The only reason I gave food a 4 star versus 5 star is because the shrimp in the Paella dish had the ammonia smell to it."

  • "Can't stop at Ybor without visiting Columbia Restaurant. Having the 1905 salad is a must."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "Plan on waiting an hour or more after your reservation time to be seated. Also, that time waiting will be spent in a tiny, crowded room. Never got to sample the food because our party of 3 left after 30 minutes in the "sweat box"."

  • "From seamless reservations to paying the bill, the experience was positive. The specials at The Columbia are always winners, and the grouper this time was exceptional. I don't know who has room for all of the courses that are so tempting, but it is fun to share a dessert. White chocolate bread pudding is my favorite."

  • "We had a group of six girls and we had a wonderful time. The food was delicious and our waiter did not rush us at all, but let us sit and talk after we had eaten. His service was great, too. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly, too."

  • "I have been to the Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City for lunch several times with the girls. My husband always wanted to go but we were always busy. Finally we made a date. He loved his lunch and the restaurant... We will be back again next winter!"

  • "Amazing, authentic cuban food. Best tableside prepared sangria I've ever had (go for the upscale version that adds brandy). And Oscar is both an informative, attentive and very personable server who didn't stear us wrong with his suggestions for so many great looking meal options."

  • "So as a college student, I haven't had a visit to this restaurant yet where I was able to go all out and get some of the more pricey items on the menu. That being said, this place has the best black beans I've ever had in my life. Tried them from someone else the first time I came, and just got a big bowl of them the second time. The decor in the restaurant is beautiful, the staff is very knowledgeable on their menu, I have no complaints. Wish I lived in Florida to visit it more often. However I will say the last time I attended some of my party were a little less happy with the food and service. Our waitress was rather short with one of my party when she asked about a dish. Also they were completely out of a beer my party wanted to try."

  • "My first stop in Tampa. Started off with the best Mojito!!! Most friendly staff in bar and restaurant. Seafood was delicious. And the Flamenco dancers amazing! Loved it !"

  • "The Columbia has gone downhill. This location is hard to enjoy eating and the food quality has gone down. The wait service is not up to standards and the noise level prohibits a conversation of any kind. The other location on the pier at St Pete's had better food but is now closed."

  • "This restaurant is a "must" on your to do list if you're in Tampa. For the food, the history but the Flamenco dancers as well. Our reservation was for 8:00 p.m. We decided to stay for the 9:30 performance of Flamenco. Noise level is high but dancers are good. My husband had the biggest steak I've ever seen (14 onces) and no wonder it was named after Babe Ruth who attended Columbia restaurant. It was served with slices of potatoes and stuffed mushroom. I had a dish called "La Completa Cubana" where roast pork a la Cubana, Boliche Criollo (eye round of beef stuffed with chorizo), Empanada de Picadillo (ground beef turnover pastry), platanos, yuca were served with black beans on a bed of yellow rice. All of Cuba's favourites on one plate!"

  • "We were seated in the bar area and it was jumping! Food was great and authentic. Service was a little slow but friendly. Entertaining folks from out of town and they loved the ambiance and energy! We'll be back!"

  • "If you want to try some authentic dishes, this is a great family restaurant. If you enjoy the food, stop by the gift shop and purchase a cookbook."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was for the price. It is definitely a wonderful place for a special occasion or date. The food portion met more than our expectations and was wonderful! We talked about it to our friends and family for days afterward."

  • "Went with two ladies to celebrate their birthdays before a show in Straz Center. Service was good, We arrived half hour early, but were seated right away. Attentive stuff. Menu choices adequate though somewhat limited. Food was good but not special. Noise was too high. Atmosphere - Unique. Overall, a nice one-time experience."
    Dined on 4/8/2014
  • "It was a special occasion, and we wanted time to talk followed by an especially tasty meal. That's what we got! Even though we had a 6:30 pm reservation on a Monday night, we were sent to the bar for a short wait. There was a rather long wait for a server, and service was slow throughout the meal. That was okay with us since we wanted time to talk and enjoy the ambiance. This is not the place to eat if you are in a hurry. All three of us ordered something different, and all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The house salad was delicious. My dish, which included pompano and crab, was wonderful. It was a very good experience."
    Dined on 4/7/2014
  • "Wait was too long even though we had a reservation. Front desk was hustling to get everyone seated but just too many people waiting for a table with a res. at the same time. Otherwise, very good dining experience,"

  • "We have visited the Columbia Restaurant multiple times in Sarasota. This was our first visit to the original restaurant in Ybor City. They have their own parking lot (very convenient). Located in a beautiful building. We had a reservation & were seated almost immediately. We were one room away from the dining room with the flamenco dancers. This meant the room got a little noisy but we were still able to comfortably talk to each other. Try one of their mojitos or their sangria! We love the food at Columbia! The warm bread, 1905 salad, black bean soup, Spanish bean soup, and every single entree we've tried is absolutely delicious. Get a side of platanos if they don't come with your meal - they are like candy! Our server, Gerry, was awesome!"

  • "We totally enjoyed our experience, especially the server, she had a great personality and took very good care of us and paid attention to details. Just a note about the dish I ordered. I wanted to tried the vegetarian paella as I am vegan. I would suggest much less salt and oil as most of us that eat this way are not into a lot of salt and oil. Perhaps more spices and herbs would be nice. Also, I would appreciate seeing more items on the menu that are vegan-friendly and low in calories. The black bean burger sounded fabulous, but had cheese in it and was fried."

  • "The Columbia is a historic place in Tampa. The building is beautiful and the employees are fabulous!! The food is 1 of a kind and the sangria is spectacular! They have such a wide variety of of items so there will always be something for everyone!"

  • "Overall food was good. Guava pastry dessert was fantastic. Flan wasn't worth the calories. Had Cuban dishes and they were good - Ropa Vieja and Pork dishes with rice and beans. Atmosphere felt like being in Spain with beautiful mosaic tiles and dark wood panels. Definitely one of the big restaurants in Ybor City."
