Diner Reviews
  • "From seamless reservations to paying the bill, the experience was positive. The specials at The Columbia are always winners, and the grouper this time was exceptional. I don't know who has room for all of the courses that are so tempting, but it is fun to share a dessert. White chocolate bread pudding is my favorite."

  • "We had a group of six girls and we had a wonderful time. The food was delicious and our waiter did not rush us at all, but let us sit and talk after we had eaten. His service was great, too. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly, too."

  • "I have been to the Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City for lunch several times with the girls. My husband always wanted to go but we were always busy. Finally we made a date. He loved his lunch and the restaurant... We will be back again next winter!"

  • "Amazing, authentic cuban food. Best tableside prepared sangria I've ever had (go for the upscale version that adds brandy). And Oscar is both an informative, attentive and very personable server who didn't stear us wrong with his suggestions for so many great looking meal options."

  • "So as a college student, I haven't had a visit to this restaurant yet where I was able to go all out and get some of the more pricey items on the menu. That being said, this place has the best black beans I've ever had in my life. Tried them from someone else the first time I came, and just got a big bowl of them the second time. The decor in the restaurant is beautiful, the staff is very knowledgeable on their menu, I have no complaints. Wish I lived in Florida to visit it more often. However I will say the last time I attended some of my party were a little less happy with the food and service. Our waitress was rather short with one of my party when she asked about a dish. Also they were completely out of a beer my party wanted to try."

  • "My first stop in Tampa. Started off with the best Mojito!!! Most friendly staff in bar and restaurant. Seafood was delicious. And the Flamenco dancers amazing! Loved it !"

  • "The Columbia has gone downhill. This location is hard to enjoy eating and the food quality has gone down. The wait service is not up to standards and the noise level prohibits a conversation of any kind. The other location on the pier at St Pete's had better food but is now closed."

  • "This restaurant is a "must" on your to do list if you're in Tampa. For the food, the history but the Flamenco dancers as well. Our reservation was for 8:00 p.m. We decided to stay for the 9:30 performance of Flamenco. Noise level is high but dancers are good. My husband had the biggest steak I've ever seen (14 onces) and no wonder it was named after Babe Ruth who attended Columbia restaurant. It was served with slices of potatoes and stuffed mushroom. I had a dish called "La Completa Cubana" where roast pork a la Cubana, Boliche Criollo (eye round of beef stuffed with chorizo), Empanada de Picadillo (ground beef turnover pastry), platanos, yuca were served with black beans on a bed of yellow rice. All of Cuba's favourites on one plate!"

  • "We were seated in the bar area and it was jumping! Food was great and authentic. Service was a little slow but friendly. Entertaining folks from out of town and they loved the ambiance and energy! We'll be back!"

  • "If you want to try some authentic dishes, this is a great family restaurant. If you enjoy the food, stop by the gift shop and purchase a cookbook."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was for the price. It is definitely a wonderful place for a special occasion or date. The food portion met more than our expectations and was wonderful! We talked about it to our friends and family for days afterward."

  • "Went with two ladies to celebrate their birthdays before a show in Straz Center. Service was good, We arrived half hour early, but were seated right away. Attentive stuff. Menu choices adequate though somewhat limited. Food was good but not special. Noise was too high. Atmosphere - Unique. Overall, a nice one-time experience."

  • "It was a special occasion, and we wanted time to talk followed by an especially tasty meal. That's what we got! Even though we had a 6:30 pm reservation on a Monday night, we were sent to the bar for a short wait. There was a rather long wait for a server, and service was slow throughout the meal. That was okay with us since we wanted time to talk and enjoy the ambiance. This is not the place to eat if you are in a hurry. All three of us ordered something different, and all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The house salad was delicious. My dish, which included pompano and crab, was wonderful. It was a very good experience."

  • "Wait was too long even though we had a reservation. Front desk was hustling to get everyone seated but just too many people waiting for a table with a res. at the same time. Otherwise, very good dining experience,"

  • "We have visited the Columbia Restaurant multiple times in Sarasota. This was our first visit to the original restaurant in Ybor City. They have their own parking lot (very convenient). Located in a beautiful building. We had a reservation & were seated almost immediately. We were one room away from the dining room with the flamenco dancers. This meant the room got a little noisy but we were still able to comfortably talk to each other. Try one of their mojitos or their sangria! We love the food at Columbia! The warm bread, 1905 salad, black bean soup, Spanish bean soup, and every single entree we've tried is absolutely delicious. Get a side of platanos if they don't come with your meal - they are like candy! Our server, Gerry, was awesome!"

  • "We totally enjoyed our experience, especially the server, she had a great personality and took very good care of us and paid attention to details. Just a note about the dish I ordered. I wanted to tried the vegetarian paella as I am vegan. I would suggest much less salt and oil as most of us that eat this way are not into a lot of salt and oil. Perhaps more spices and herbs would be nice. Also, I would appreciate seeing more items on the menu that are vegan-friendly and low in calories. The black bean burger sounded fabulous, but had cheese in it and was fried."

  • "The Columbia is a historic place in Tampa. The building is beautiful and the employees are fabulous!! The food is 1 of a kind and the sangria is spectacular! They have such a wide variety of of items so there will always be something for everyone!"

  • "Overall food was good. Guava pastry dessert was fantastic. Flan wasn't worth the calories. Had Cuban dishes and they were good - Ropa Vieja and Pork dishes with rice and beans. Atmosphere felt like being in Spain with beautiful mosaic tiles and dark wood panels. Definitely one of the big restaurants in Ybor City."

  • "I have had the pleasure of experiencing Colombia Restaurant in St. Augustine since I live in Jacksonville but this was my first time to the original location and my boyfriends first time at Colombia. We started with the1905 Salad...OF COURSE...and then moved to Tapas, shrimp, scallops and empanadas. All were absolutely delicious!! Our waiter was Alberto and he was just a gem!"

  • "We went on a weekday evening. It was very crowded and very very loud. We couldn't hear each other from across the table unless we literally yelled. Getting seated seemed to be an issue; we showed up at our reservation time but still had to wait for around 20 minutes to get a table. Service was friendly but not very attentive. My favorite salad was not as good as it has been at other Columbia Restaurant locations (this was the first time at this particular location). Had to ask for the hot sauce that "came with" my croquettes. Husband had the bread pudding which tasted pretty good but it was strange that he had two slices and one was hard and one was soft. Overall not the best experience. May not visit this location again."

  • "Tampa area classic. Service a bit abrupt and reservations not honored on time. I had the grouper. Just ok. Stick to the tapas."

  • "Was all I hoped it would be. Took a business associate for his first visit. He was very impressed. Food was great. Service attentive. We lunched in the bar area."

  • "It's a place if you're in Tampa you need to go to but I don't know if I'd ever go back! Glad I went once but that's enough. Our waitress was really pushing alcohol on us and only the more expensive dinners. She seemed upset that we only got salads and entrees and was talking about how good all the tapas were for 5 mins."

  • "Have enjoyed meals here several times over the last few years but this is the first that I also booked a table for their flamenco show. A group of 11 enjoyed a fabulous meal of appetizers entrees sangria wine and the flamenco show was just wonderful. In fact I've recently been in Madrid where i enjoyed a flamenco show and can say the Columbia show is quite authentic. The house labeled wines are quite good as was the paella, snapper, grouper to name a few of the entrees we enjoyed. Didn't have room for dessert."

  • "Had a reservation but was curtly told by the hostess that it would be 20 minutes before being seated. Finally brought to a table sandwiched between 2 large 10+ parties. Very loud, hard to carry a conversation. Waited 15 minutes before "Tom" acknowledged us saying he'd be with us in a moment. Another 10 minutes before he took our drink order and dinner order. The entire time of waiting we were not given water. After placing our order we waiting another 10 minutes before Tom abruptly put bread on our table. Still no waters. Saw a manager and host stand in between the 2 rooms and I was waving at them to get their attention. They both looked at me waving and ignored me and walked away. Finally found a bus boy to get water. Wouldnot return"

  • "The snapper tasted strong and not fresh. The 1905 salad had large chucks of iceberg lettuce which were not edible. My wife chicken dish was over cooked rubbery and not edible. This was relayed to server who did not want to tell the chef, perhaps because he/she would not listen. I have visited and eaten at this location several times in the past years and have always found the food very good. I would not go to this location again. I had the feeling that this was acceptable to the management because it was a tourist location and these people may never come back again. I have also visited the St. Augustine location many times and have found that food very good and would go back there."

  • "My husband and I had eaten here before and had a terrific experience, could not wait to go back. I am a vegetarian and they have many options clearly marked on the menu. Even with reservations this time we had to wait for a table, and once we were seated it took a very long time to get served. There are huge crowds here, so make a reservation, even for lunch. Our disappointing meal began this time when we ordered mojitos. We have had them here before and they were wonderful. However, the waiter brought them back with no mint in them. We sent them back and he brought some with mint. He never did check back until he brought the food (we ordered a bottle of wine and it came after the food). We hope for better service next time."

  • "We were disappointed. We had been looking forward to coming to the Columbia since we moved here late last year. It was nice and the food OK but we were expecting much more and the resturant fell short of what we had hoped."
