The restaurant ambience is very pleasing and comfortable and they have added features to create privacy and reduce the noise, which is welcoming. The service was very efficient and non-intrusive and unhurried. The food delicious - this was the first bite menu. The sauce on the paparadelle was a little skimpy, I wanted it to be a little saucier. The pasta, however was perfectly cooked.

Restaurant was really bustling when we arrived for our 6:00 PM Boulder First Bite reservation. I had the 7-hour beef entree and my wife had the risotto. Bean soup was delicious as were the desserts. We had a very enjoyable time. Great service. 3-course First Bite had just the right proportions.

My wife and I ate at Colterra in Niwot during First Bite Boulder week. We have eaten at many restaurants over the years, during the First Bite Boulder week, but this was the best meal & experience yet. Portions were just right (sometimes restaurants during this week skimp on portion size). We had starters of Fall pumpkin soup and beet salad, then entrees of Crispy Chicken Leg Confit and boulliabaisse, followed by two deserts of flourless chocolate cake and apple cake. Everything was delicious and the service was friendly, observant, and efficient. We also enjoyed our martini cocktails (Colterra makes a great Vesper martini) and wine. Definitely a wonderful experience.

  • Disappointed in the food
    Homecook
    Dined on 11/19/2014
The food did not live up to the menu or waiter's descriptions. We went for the "first bite" menu, hoping to experience some of the chef's finest cooking. It was okay if you like a plain, home-cooked meal, but there were no special flavors or sauces. The beet salad was a small plate of lettuce with some roasted beats on top, maybe some nuts - but not carmelized or anything. The "slow cooked beef" (their name was much more elaborate) was bland, somewhat dry, pot-roast, the "crispy chicken leg..." was like soggy baked chicken. The desserts were stale. The atmosphere and waitstaff were excellent, however. I would not recommend this restaurant unless you are longing for a plain, home-cooked meal that a so-so cook might make. I could do better in my own kitchen.

  • Best "First Bite" Menu
    2foodies
    Dined on 11/17/2014
We took friends for "First Bite Boulder", as Colterra has the most choices on their menu and does not add surcharges (which would defeat the point of a fixed price menu). We tried several different things and shared - all were judged good to excellent. A potato soup special was added to the menu and was outstanding, as was the beef carpaccio. Portions were ample - I took half of my chicken leg confit home and enjoyed it again left over. My husband did not care for the spaghetti squash, bot I thought it was fine. They had a list of wine specials for First Bite and we had an excellent red blend from the South African Graham Beck winery. The wine was fabulous with the meal, but remarkably also served well as an after-dinner libation following dessert! The only thing not quite right was that the pear tart that 2 of us ordered came in two very different portions - mine was a tiny sliver and the other was quite large. Our server was attentive and helpful without being intrusive. Colterra is definitely one of our favorite restaurants in the Boulder area.

We found time to visit Colterra Monday evening for Boulder Restaurant week and had a perfect dining experience. We haven't dined here in a while just due to logistics but were very pleased to find the service, food, and entire dining experience are as pleasing as we remembered. The carpaccio appetizer was a presentation torques, as were the entrees and desserts. We will be back, it's still one of our favorites.

Started out with a Happy hour drink, then on to dinner. I had the Beef Carpaccio app, with was very tasty and not too salty. Then the Bouillabaisse, the Broth was very nice, but the Fish was alittle disappointing. The Caramel Apple Cake was very good as well. Wife had the Pumpkin soup, Braized Beef and the Raspberry Chocolate Torte, all of which were very good. She also had a reasonable French Pino that the really liked and had it re-corked.

  • Gourmet Food at Colterra

Pleasant dining experience for the gourmet/foodie crowd. Many unusual dishes. Vegetarian linguini was good as was the beef. Superb wine list. Expensive, but good value. Service excellent. Note: Although we had reserved a table and the restaurant was not at all full, we were first shipped off to an auxiliary cottage. We had to go through a strange, semi-outdoor area where I tripped over gravel and up a stairs, through a service area and into this weird little cottage where there were no other diners. The table where they wanted to seat us was small and crowded with other tables. Naturally, we asked to be seated back in the main dining room and were accommodated with no problem. We simply felt this inexplicable and odd.

A lovely atmosphere, warm ambience, visually pleasing, comfortable. Excellent service, knowledgable staff, attentive without hovering. Unique menu from cocktails to desserts, inventive and apropos to the season. Being there on Halloween, a lot of pumpkin was incorporated into the dishes. The pumpkin soup had a rich deep taste, but was not heavy (although a bit too much lemon for my liking). The bread basket was good, but not special. The vegetable tasting incorporated local fresh veggies, and was tasty and filling. The lamb ragout was rich and satisfying. Will definitely return again.

Went for a birthday dinner. Great ambiance, drinks were a nice mix of trendy and classic. 90% of the food was great, well plated, good portions. Specials were amazing. Ordered the creme brulee for dessert, and it was a huge disappointment- overcooked, and you could actually see pieces of egg in it (clearly it wasn't strained). The brulee was overdone too, a very dark caramel. Not an awesome way to end the birthday dinner, but everything else was great, so we will be back. Like a lot of restaurants, dessert is probably just an afterthought, with no dedicated pastry chef, which is too bad.

Had reservations for dinner, this was our 2nd visit, the first visit we were invited by friends and had a wonderful experience, we decided to try it again with very special friends of ours and had less than a satisfied experience. The hostess greeting us was great! After that it seemed to go down. The restaurant was not very busy, the waiter seemed pre-occupied and not very friendly. One of the meals had to be sent back to be re-cooked and when returned it was not very tasty. Meat was a little over done, asked for medium well and it was well done. I will savor the first visit and unless invited probably will not return for a third on my own.

Colterra is a great choice for a first rate dinner. The corn and parsnip soup and the cheese course were great starters. My wife had the sirloin small plate ( not that small). I had the squash risotto topped by a perfectly cooked sea bass. Finished with a flourless chocolate cake which was rich and just the right size. Service was excellent. Do try it. And hit their sister restaurant Salt while you're at it. Won't be disappointed.

Colterra is not a hip scene and seemed a bit old fashioned for the menu. The ambiance was poor, with very bright lighting and an older person feel. The bar was small and not fit for enjoying a cocktail before dinner. We are in our 40s and felt like kids. The food was good, but I've had better in Boulder. Honestly I was too distracted by the ambiance. It probably would have been better if we were on the patio outside. The service was so so. The wait staff came by often, but did not remove used and empty barware until I handed it to them. We won't be going back anytime soon.

Great restaurant in the little town of Niwot. Outstanding food, nice outdoor setting in the summer. Had scallops that were perfectly seared, and an interesting wine selection. Very relaxing atmosphere. The wait service was excellent up until the time we were ready to leave, then it seemed our server was nowhere to be found. Our favorite restaurants in Niwot is Colterra. The owner, Bradford Heap, knows his stuff and the menu is always perfect for the season, has lots of local, organic ingredients and is always delicious. We like to go for special occasions or to bring out of town guests who love good food. We love the old farmhouse that houses it -It has a lovely ambience. Although it's not inexpensive, it's also not the most pricey restaurant in the Boulder area.
