Diner Reviews
  • "is what I feel each time I visit this Establishment"

  • "The Coliseum was recommended by the hotel across the street. We ate outside overlooking the fabulous pool with the ocean in sight. The hostess was very pleasant, our server was polite and engaging, and the maître d' was attentive and polished. The food was delicious. This was a very pleasant dining experience. Would definitely go again."

  • "Our boss treated us to lunch here after a big project. The food was fabulous. Several people had the shrimp special and loved it. The diver scallops were amazing. One had the cobb salad and said it was terrific. Our server was professional and very friendly. It's always a special treat to eat at the Coliseum Grill."

  • "Pelican Hill Resort is like another world - full of architectural beauty, wide open spaces, powerful expanses of clean simple grandeur, the hushed tones of wealth. Kobe Bryant has his main home here and uses the pool with his daughter occasionally. The food is simple and good. Upscale traditional. Poolside is limited - you can get fish tacos, flatbreads, burgers, hotdogs, fries. Upstairs in the restaurant/grill/patio area - a more extensive menu. I just got desserts - a warm chocolate chip cookie on an cast iron skillet, a mini key lime pie with candied "golden grahams", a latte. A perfect spot to look out over the ocean, Pelican Hill golf course, watch the kids in the circular swimming pool. Complimentary valet parking for the restaurant."

  • "We have been coming here for many years, and it is very disappointing to see how much this place has deteriorated. From the time we sat down, it took over an hour to get our food. How long does it take to make a salad? The whole experience took two hours for a simple meal, and we only saw our server 3 times. She never followed up on our food, never checked on us when we finally got the food, and we had to make an effort to find her to get the check. As for the food, the salad is not as good as it used to be, and the parmesan garlic fries had no parmesan or garlic. For a place that caters to rich people, they should be ashamed of their poor performance."

  • "The service is very friendly, the food is very good and the setting is spectacular. Tables are well spaced so it is easy to talk within your group. We eat lunch or dinner there often and have always been pleased with our meal. Nice entree selection on the menu, steak, burgers pasta all good. The first course items are quite limited and boring. Desserts are okay, not special."

  • "Overpriced, not a good value. Seems to be priced for ambiance and service."

  • "We love Pelican Hill Resort, it is nestled above Crystal Cove State Beach and the resort, scenery, ambiance & views are all spectacular. We've eaten at The Coliseum twice, once for a wonderful breakfast, and this time for a late lunch / early dinner. Both experiences were top notch. The staff is excellent. We sat on the patio overlooking the pool & resort grounds with the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop of our culinary stage! The food was well prepared, fresh, healthy and offered a wide variety of choices to serve just about any need. I recommend the salmon on a bed of greens. It was cooked exquisitely. Desserts were creative and decadent. This is a fantastic place!"

  • "I frequent the Coliseum Bar & Grill, especially to host business meetings and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The staff is always courteous and the food is exquisite. I highly recommend this venue to anyone."

  • "Beautiful setting. Exceptional food and service. The lobster scramble for breakfast was great. Cannot wait for the next opportunity to visit this wonderful restaurant."

  • "This place is all about the view of the expansive pool, the golf course and of course the ocean. The food is fine, but you can get a better meal at Andrea or Pelican Grill. Lots of menu choices from American to Italian to seafood though. If you drink wine by the glass there aren't a lot of choices but there is a nice wine by the bottle selection. Service is what you would expect for a place like this---attentive but not overly. Pelican Resort is just a serene and elegant place to be in general and the Coliseum Pool and Grill is no exception."

  • "Jameson was absolutely a delight. You need that kind of person greeting and seating people. He often went around the tables talking and asking if he could do anything further. Outstanding. Server I believe her name to be Stacey, cannot remember, was not real personable and was just OK. Even the person I had taken there for lunch commented on how she was not cheerful."

  • "We specifically requested an outdoor table and went at an off time. There seemed to be tables available but were told we had to eat inside. Not happy"

  • "You will not find a nicer setting or professional staff than the Coliseum."

  • "We often have visitors coming to see us in Newport Beach and when we can take them to lunch, the Coliseum Pool Grill is our first choice. The ambience, views and quality of food is fantastic ... and equaled or exceeded by the excellent service. This is a very special place that reflects attention to detail and is clearly backed by an excellent management team. Highly recommended."

  • "Overlooking the pool with great food. Cant ask for anything more."

  • "Why isn't this place more crowded? Perfect views, good food, great mixed drinks and a long list of wines. The Coliseum has it all, including private dining areas for your group dinners, great service and FREE PARKING! So skip that Newport Beach or Laguna Beach dump and come dine here. Quesadillas are faves, as is the Gazpacho and salads. The small plates are good for sharing and they have fish, steak, pasta, all done reasonably well for OC standards. If you are having a group -business dinner or similar they will put you in a cabana space with heaters so you can watch the sunset over the Pacific and dine in your own space!!!"

  • "It's always nice to come here for lunch and enjoy the view of the pool and the ocean. The food is not as good as it used to be, but still good enough. Don't miss the parmesan garlic fries."

  • "You should go here knowing that it is an experience. You should go knowing that it will be expensive and knowing that it is a special experience. In my reservation I asked for a table with a view and was accommodated with a place on the patio overlooking the pool. It was like a scene out of a movie, quiet, serene and breathtakingly beautiful. It was a little chilly, being February, but there were heaters in the ceiling and the staff provided blankets. The service was spectacular, the food was delicious (especially the hummus- I really want to know how they flavored that.), and the atmosphere was magnificent. If given the opportunity, I will return."

  • "This is the most casual, and affordable, of the three dining rooms at Pelican Hill Resort. Brunch menu is quite varied and surprisingly affordable considering the setting. Service is impecable. Highly recommended."

  • "The setting and ambiance was great but the food and the service were poor. The bread was stale and several of the entrees appeared to have been sitting under heat lamps for too long. I wouldn't recommend it for the price point. I have had several good meals at Pelican Hill restaurants in the past but this was disappointing."

  • "The atmosphere is great, with an excellent view west towards the ocean. there was a slight breeze but with the heaters it was very comfortable eating outdoors. Great ambiance and I would reccommend it to anyone."

  • "The Coliseum @ Pelican Hills Resort is a wonderful hidden gem in Orange County. The view of the round pool below and the Pacific Ocean is breath-taking. Service is excellent and the food is outstanding. You are not "rushed" through your dining experience. Heaters are nice bur not needed the day we dined. Wait staff was very prompt and helpful. Wonderful dining experience and reasonable prices."

  • "The Coliseum Pool and Grill goes the whole distance in making your dining experience outstanding, with complimentary valet, hostesses that make you feel welcome, knowledgeable fun service, a view, great food and wine all for a reasonable price. It is both a great place for families and a romantic casual dinner."

  • "If you are staying at the pelican hill resort it is a great place for a nice dinner. If you aren't staying there ..there are tons of other places that will do the job"

  • "Food was very good this time. We had chicken tortilla soup, salad and curry chicken with basmati rice. Curry chicken had a good kick of spice in it. Our waiter was very attentive checking on us at the proper times."

  • "We were pleased with the overall experience of lunch at The Coliseum. I took my mother there on New Year's Day. The server was especially upbeat and attentive. Food was very good. We had the chicken sandwich and the panini. The only disappointments were 1) finding out we had to wait for 30 mins if we wanted table outside with shade (no priority for reservation outside) and 2) ambiance inside was kind of a sports bar with huge tv in front of us and no view of pool due to tables outside."

  • "Usually a great place for a more casual meal at this upscale resort. The menu has a great variety to please everyone and the view from the outdoor tables is great. On this occasion however the service was painfully slow and unattentive. Main courses are generally good but deserts are prefab concoctions shovedd in glasses ala "Seasons 52" and need to be changed to a better/fresher presentation."

  • "I didn't realize when I made the reservation via Open Table that it would be a set menu. 100 bucks PP for a so-so meal was unacceptable. Also, the open air design is just not comfortable during the chilly nights, my feet were frozen!"
