Diner Reviews
  • "Moving to Newport Coast so decided to try out this highly recommended restaurant in the beautiful Pelican Hills resort. Casual lunch was perfect. Lots of activity by the pool overlooking the Pacific. The shrimp quesadilla was perfect and the potato leek soup was excellent. I highly recommend the Coliseum for a fun, casual meal."

  • "We really enjoyed this as a party of 6 for a birthday. It was very crowded and we had to wait for a table outside and the service was a bit slow but it wasn't a real issue. Food was good and the view is really great."

  • "We are regulars at the Coliseum but find it special every time. The setting is spectacular with outside dining in a semi circle around one side of a 100 foot diameter round swimming pool all overlooking the manicured golf course and Pacific Ocean beyond. The name of the restaurant reflects the grand architecture of the restaurant and pool cabana building. The decor is classically elegant yet, in the setting, feels casual. The result is that we can feel comfortable in shorts, casual or business casual attire. The excellent, well presented food is consistent with this theme, from simple choices like hamburgers to imaginative steaks and seafood entrees all priced as casual dining. Service is consistent, attentive and excellent."

  • "Went for a quiet light dinner midweek. Normally a great spot. We ordered a starter of garlic fries and some gazpacho. After 30 minutes and being told twice that our order would be out "in just a minute," we asked for a manager and after another 5 minutes (no show on the manager) we got up and left. Don't go here if you're hungry."

  • "We live locally in Newport beach ca and always arrange to meet all of our dining dates here at the coliseum to showcase the best of dining with a view along the coast !! Great food, great service, great ambiance!!"

  • "Our lunch outside was absolutely fabulous. The ambiance and scenery and food were excellent. The mushroom soup was so delicious. Can hardly wait to go back."

  • "The food was ordinary and very salty. Took forever to get food. Server was lovely and location is great. Not very creative or innovative. Brunch buffet was $65, a ridiculous amount for an aveerage hotel brunch."

  • "They ignore your wishes at reservation with some lame excuses. The waiters are nice and trying but food is mediocre - there are nicer places to go where they have a better control over roaming children. I am not recommending the place, particularly not for an intimate celebration or special occasion because you just will embarrass yourself."

  • "Requested an outdoor table at 6:45. Upon arrival we were told to wait for a table outside (20 mins). Checked back at that time and was told first come, first served. After another 25 mins they took us to a table that had been empty from the start. Didn't get food until 8:15 which is too late with kids. Won't go back. Nice view though and food was ok."

  • "Everything about Pelican Hill is amazing and the Coliseum Pool and Grill is a continuation of that. Great view, great service and great food. I like having meetings there. The noise level is low, the scenery is great and it sure beats Starbucks!"

  • "Everything was prefect . The food was great. The waiter was friendly . Best 1st anniversary ever."

  • "Great restaurant that seems very overwhelmed on busy summer weekends. I have dined at this restaurant many times and usually it is fantastic. However, when dining on a Saturday night during the busy summer season, it seemed very overwhelmed and perhaps understaffed. From the valet parking, to the hostess desk, to the servers, to the quality of food coming from the kitchen, it wasn't the usual amazing experience and amazing food."

  • "I've been here close to a dozen times, mainly to bring out of town guests or business associates. Service is always slow and inattentive, and the food is hit or miss (Crab cakes are good, Croque Monsieur is gross) and the drinks are EXPENSIVE. After the last fiasco of being seated in the noisy bar area (when I had a reservation) I think I'm done. I don't see this place getting any better."

  • "Great restaurant but food and service were not at their usual level when busy."

  • "I can always count on the Pelican Hill Coliseum Grill for a great dining experience. I've been there on slow nights / days and busy holidays, it's always a good experience. Food, service and setting are top tier."

  • "I love the relaxed feel of this beautiful restaurant – like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. My wife and I will definitely return to enjoy the view, great service and a incredible view. We enjoy this restaurant most in the evening hours before and during sunset. You will come to love it too!"

  • "This is simply a dependable good experience. Food, service, VIEWS, staff...it's all good. I couldn't be happier that this resort is so close to where I live and work, it's the perfect setting for business or pleasure."

  • "The location, privacy , breeze and ambience is very good. servers are not doing their job with their heart in to it ! I had to ask 3 times for something and still it was not what I had asked for. I habe been going to Caliseum for lunch and continue doing so but at the same time as I care I thought I shoule share my findings with you. Paul sabet Ph.D"

  • "Our brunch was excellent! The view was stunning! It was quiet and peaceful and made us feel like we were on vacation! Our server was great with the kids and very attentive to all of our needs. We enjoyed the buffet as well as ordered from the menu and the food was amazing! We will definitely be making another reservation at The Coliseum. Thank you."

  • "The special father's day menu had a lobster/filet option. The meat was discusting as per the meat eating boys in our party, and the more fish oriented among us, ordered fish/lobster. The portions were ridiculously small. Not in a chic French delicious way. More in a tiny piece of lobster and dry fish/piece of filet wanna be meat, type of way. $47 to $59 a dish! it was a huge disappointment."

  • "The food and setting are just wonderful. The service was not. We sat down and were greeted by a server & ordered drinks right away. About 10 min later, another server greeted us & took our order again, which was odd. When she finally came back to take our order, our drinks were nearly empty. The food came & was delicious, & we were ready to order more drinks. We sat with our empty glasses &empty plates for about 15 min before I asked someone to get our server for us. When she came back, we ordered more drinks & asked for the check. The check never came, our drinks were finished for about 10 minutes before we asked someone again to get our server for us. Since we were celebrating, being annoyed by the service was disappointing."

  • "Although the high prices suggest the food should be good, the lunch-time menu is "just" acceptable! We should have opted for a less scenic view but with better food. The staff, however, were pleasant."

  • "Great ambiance, disappointing Eggs Benedict. Hollandaise sauce needs a lot of improvement. The Canadian Bacon couldn't have been thinner. The English muffin was under- toasted. Omelet was very good, but a little overcooked."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "I would recommend Coliseum only for the view. Service was terrible. We were not greeted for over 10minutes after we were seated. The waitress had to be flagged down. Busboys forgets to bring water when asked."

  • "Both the food and the service were excellent. Great place to go for outdoor dinning with family or with friends. The scenic view of the pool and golf course bring together the elements that make your day a wonderful occasion. We'll be going again."
