  • "Mexican bistro is a good description of Colibri. It has a lively bar, is rather crowded and a bit noisy, but the food is quite good. Ceviche was excellent, as were the chips and salsas. Colibri has a wide variety of tequilas, and they even serve a "flight" of tequilas for sipping. (We opted for respectable and reasonably priced margaritas.) One of the best things about the restaurant is its location - directly across from the ACT and Curran theaters, it couldn't be more convenient for theater-goers."

  • "We were visiting from the east coast looking for restaurants close to our hotel. The service and ambience were very nice. The appetizers were great however the chips were horrible! The entrees were very poor in fact we both left our plates barely touched. I have had much better mexican food on the east coast!! We will be back in the San Fran area but I will skip this place."

  • "Delicious Mexican food. The menu selections are not the typical items geared for the American palate, i.e. tacos, burritos and enchiladas. It is more like a Mexican bistro. My dish, Duck Breast with Pipian Sauce. Deliciously prepared and beautiful presentation. Prices are reasonable relative to most restaurants in the downtown San Francisco area. However, all items are a la carte. Typical of downtown restaurants and adding to the cost. Don't expect a huge plate with beans, rice and entree. Arrive around 5:30 during happy hour and beer only $6 for two pints of IPA. Lively scene. Service was prompt, attentive and comfortable. Very convenient location across the street from both the Curran and ACT (Geary) theaters. Menu entrees $18 - 22 avg."

  • "We enjoyed the prawns with tamarind mole sauce and also the "Panuchos de Cochinita Pibil" (basically shredded pork mini-tacos). Both are definitely Mexican, but not anything you'll find at the usual neighborhood Mexican restaurant. The food came quickly, the prawns were tender and not overcooked. The waiter was available when we needed him, but not hovering. The warm tortillas served instead of bread are very flavorful and tender, and the sauces they come with range from barely spicy at all (but flavorful) the quite spicy."

  • "We were a party of four and were seated promptly. We ordered the house made guacamole which was wonderful, but price with chips was $14 which was a bit pricey. On recommendation of the water I ordered the chile relleno with meat. It was okay and a small sized plate. My husband has the carnitas, which he said were dry and we had to try quite awhile to flag a waiter to bring some more sauce. He has eaten many carnitas and felt these were not as well prepared as he has had other places.the chocolate. Mexican cake with ice cream was memorable and would highly recommend it. All in all too pricey."

Our waitress was very unpleasant, which was surprising since I had enjoyed the service at this pklace twice before. Perhaps the manager needs to work on improving these defects."

  • "This was and third (and last) try at this restaurant. I have yet to find anything (other than the mild guacamole) that was not too spicy hot to my taste. I queried the server about the spiciness of several dishes and was told that the flautas were NOT spicy. I took one bite and sent it back. I have eaten at many Mexican restaurants and have never had the problem I have had here on each occasion I have dined here. So, don't believe what they tell you. It's SPICEY!"

  • "My husband and I always enjoy dining at Colibri when visiting. We usually have the entrees but opted to try 3 appetizers & a salad to share this time. The chicken, white fish, pork carnitas & mixed vegetable appetizers suggested by our waitress were absolutely delicious and beautifully prepared but too much for us to finish. We loved the unusual jicama & mango salad as well as the complimentary fresh tortillas. Service was also outstanding."

  • "We have been fans of Colibri's for more than a few yrs. We recommend it to any of our friends that stay in SF. We have never been disappointed by the food or Sangria. This past visit our service was really off. Reservations were made thru Open Table for 8pm on a Thu nite, we arrived 5 min early & still waited 15 min. We were seated & sat another 10 to have a server greet us w/water. Once we ordered things ran smoother because of the 2 food runners. We then waited awhile for the check. Trust us we get it when places are busy, but this wasn't the case this nite. The server either had too many tables or it was a really off night for her. Don't worry we love the proximity and the food of this restaurant, hope this was just a random situation."

  • "I've been here a number of times since they opened and the quality has been consistently good. There's more seasonal variation in the menu now than there used to be but the dishes are delicious. Portions may not look huge but they are definitely filling! I always love the sopes surtidos and the filet mignon, and the churros are to die for (this is one of a very few restaurants where I don't order a chocolate dessert). It's right across from ACT and the Curran Theater, so this is a great place to eat before a show. The main drawback is their wooden chairs are not very comfortable, so I try to get a booth whenever possible."

  • "Colibri has been one of my go-to places in the theater district for some years now. Although the food and drinks are still remarkably good, the service tends to be...spotty. Our guacamole came quickly. Long before our drinks. The table next to us had similar problems with their drinks, and even had at least one of their dishes arrive before drinks. The waiter blamed a back-up at the bar, but we could see the bar, and they weren't exactly working hard. But everything eventually came, and the food was terrific. Guacamole was nice, with good texture and some spice. The ceviche was really good, as were the camarones en mole. The chili relleno was just OK. Got done in time to cross the street to the theater."

It was quiet while we were there, but I don't know how it is with a full restaurant. Through OpenTable I had requested a table for six, and asked to accommodate a wheelchair, so one less chair, and they had the table all ready for us. Great food, but had to order chips, they weren't automatically delivered to the table."

  • "Right across the street from A.C.T. and the Curran and & just steps from Union Square the restaurant highlights regional dishes from Mexico made with fresh, local ingredients. The warm decor is hacienda-style with a beautiful back-bar and an extensive tequila selection. Highlights include fresh margaritas (on the rocks or chilled, no Squishees here), Guacamole made fresh table-side, freshly made corn tortillas, chips and salsas. My date had perfectly cooked carnitas and I had the sopes sampler, followed by one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth - custard filled churros with dulce de leche ice cream. Not to be missed, we will be coming back to check out the moles and maybethe warm chocolate cake! Reservations highly recommended."
