A word from Colibri - Mexican Bistro
Restaurant Description: Colibri Mexican Bistro features a traditional and diverse Mexican cuisine. The complex flavors from the kitchen are complimented with creative drinks, selected Tequilas, beer and wine from the bar. The decor matches that found in Mexico City's cantinas in the early 1900's. Bienvenido a Colibri Mexican Bistro y buen provecho! We serve our authentic cuisine in a tapas style so that you can enjoy multiple dishes to share with others. Diner Reviews
  • "Absolutely fantastic food. Very authentic and genuine. Extensive tequila selection for those with discerning taste. Highly recommended."

  • "You won't find tacos or burritos here, instead you will savor a variety of meat and fish dishes that are tasty. I had the carnitas, large chunks of tender pork with seasonings and vegetables. While the food was good, the narrow confines left you feeling pAcked like sardines without much interaction with the staff. The noise level, with chatter and I discernible jazz left you feeling challenged for a conversation. Bottom line: very good food and drinks, noisy and crowded."

  • "Good thing we had lunch reservations, it was very busy. The food was awesome across the board, once it came to the table. It was clear they cannot handle a crowd, as our service was poor. Food was not delivered together for the lunch, some got food, others go excuses. Servers were not around and available to help, and when asking about food not delivered the response was that the kitchen was too busy and good food takes a long time to make! I would go back for the great food, but make sure no one is there first!"

  • "I have been here many times over the years and this place used to be quite good before. Yesterday, I had a lunch meeting here and they were late in getting the restaurant set up, it looked closed from outside and the place was not yet clean. Food (enchiladas) was cold with the cheese not even melted in it. I asked for a small scoop of guac (as I have always done) on the side with my enchiladas, the waitress said they don't have that and guac is a separate order. How is a Mexican restaurant not willing to give you a spoon of guac with enchiladas??? Also, they never came back to offer more iced tea or lemonade. I understand not refreshing cocktails but a little more lemonade/tea would have been nice during lunch. Disappointed!"

  • "Excellent diversity of Mexican food. Not the same Mexican fare. Mouth-watering and adventurous!"

  • "Colibri is a nice place place for fresh upscale Mexican cuisine. The list of taquilas and mescals is large. The food was very good, creative in presentation, and enjoyable in a group. The desserts were also very tasty. I'll be going back!"

  • "Situated across the street from the Curran Theater, Colibri is a solid latin American restaurant. Tortillas are made on site, and are among the best I have tasted in 40 years of dining out regularly. My wife's fish tacos were well made, though a bit short on the Tilapia. My son had a lamb shank that was the meatiest I had ever seen, and very flavorful. No need for a knife; it fell off the bone - very tender. My Chicken Pablano was tender and juicy. However, the sauce had just a slight tinge of bitterness from the chocolate in the sauce. Some would find it wonderfully authentic. I like it sweeter without the bitter edge. The service was stellar, impressive given how busy they were. More fish on the taco and this is a 4 star place."

  • "Great place to go for dinner before the theater. Service was fast."

  • "Good food, very fresh and upscale Mexican dishes. Guacamole is excellent. We had theater tickets at the Curran which is right across the street. Excellent service. Always enjoy eating here and you will too! Desserts are really good and my favorite dish is the duck breast."

  • "With the theatre across the street and a reservation in hand, we ended up totally enjoying our dinner at Colibri. The drinks were well made, the food fantastic and the service sensitive to our showtime without rushing us. We would go back in a flash."

  • "This restaurant is very convenient to the theaters, as it's right across the street from the Curran, and the service is ok, not great, but nothing to complain about. However, that's about all that it has going for it. The food is just ok and the portions are small. And it is so outrageously expensive for what you get that they should be ashamed of themselves. I understand charging more for the location, but this was unbelievable. 4 of us had a small bowl of soup, a dinner salad and one glass of wine each and the bill, with tip and tax was over $160! I have no problem paying a lot of money if it's worth the value but this definitely was not. I would never go back here."

  • "Food is really something special with some unique dishes. Loved the carnitas, empanadas and tamales. Great friendly service and so convenient to the Curran. You can linger over coffee and hop across the street 10 minutes before the curtain goes up! Will surely go back. One minor gripe is paying $2 extra for chips to go with the guacamole."

  • "I've dined at Colibri at least 10 times since they opened, and the food is consistently great."

  • "I love Colibri's menu. All the appetizers and entrees have authentic Mexican preparations, and are delicious, but it is not a casual place. They have wonderful waiters, and an active bar with many different margaritas, mezcals drinks, and straight shots and flights of numerous tequilas. It is always busy, so reservations are in order."

  • "my go-to spot for trips to the Curran Theater. excellent selection of tequila and the food is really good."

  • "Food is excellent. Service is good. They have a happy hour at the bar that is well worth it. The chicken tacos and ceviche are delicious. Fish tacos are also tasty. Great pre theater spot!"

  • "Chips fresh and very crisp. Guacamole was made to taste using avocados cut and mashed in view of our table. Place was clean, there was a good bar, and all in all, we had a nice lunch."

  • "We enjoyed it. Would go again when in that part of town. Will recommend to friends."

  • "I was not impressed by their service. Have been to Colibri two previous times and recall better dining experience than the night of June 25th. For the price, there are numerous competitive restaurants in San Francisco. At this point, there are no reason or incentive for me to return to dine at Colibri."

  • "Our group of 4 had to shout to be heard. Not fun when you're trying to catch up with old friends. Go with someone you don't want to talk to."

  • "Third trip to Colibri, and it gets better every time. I had a chili relleno stuffed with carnitas - unusual and delicioso. My spouse had the special - short ribs enchiladas. Even better than mine. Add to that their famous guac, lots of chips and warm tortillas and a couple of margaritas and you have a meal fit for royalty. Not to mention it's across the street from the Geary and Curran theaters. Just go early. Colibri gets packed! A bit pricey, but it's really for special occasions. Everyday Mexican will still be at my neighborhood taqueria"

  • "Food is great & 'authentic', bar service was slow."

  • "We came late to our reservations due to traffic on the freeway. You were very kind - worked to fit us in without making us feel like a burden. I have eaten at Colibri many times and will continue to do so ---- because the food is consistently great in quality and the staff is so efficient."

  • "We've enjoyed dinner at Colibri multiple times before performances at the American Repertory Theater, directly across the street. The menu has more than enough variety to please any fan of Mexican food with a distinctly 21st Century San Francisco twist. Try the lamb shank - it was delicious! The service is prompt and attentive. It is busy and noisy, especially in the front. Only downside: the tables for two in the front are small, close together and the noise from the bar means that you have to concentrate to sustain a conversation. If you have a larger group, reserve one of their booths near the back. But, overall, the well-prepared food and convenience to A.C.T. mean that we'll be back!"

  • "Great Restaurant, 3 blocks from Union Square. Great Food, fantastic service , very, very nice. Will go back next time we are in the City and will definitely recommend it to friends."

  • "ceviche- terrific. Empanadas... OMG - just perfect. Tamirand Mole Shrimp - just yummy. and the fried dough, drizzled with honey and caramel - heaven (and the home made vanilla bean ice cream was an added bonus). It would be easy to throw these dishes out there and have them be adequate with simply the ingredients, but here the kitchen shows a careful hand as everything was cooked perfectly and each flavor came through. A wonderful dining experience except for the noise level (which seems to be an occupational hazard when dining in any SF establishment where the bar is placed centrally in the dining area."

  • "SF is a foodies dream. With so many excellent places to dine it is hard to stand out, but Colibri does. Located on the same block as SF's off-Broadway theaters, near many of SF's well known Blues and Nightclubs, within SF's best shopping, and near BART Colibri is a great place to start or recover from a day in SF. The Bay Area has so many Mexican restaurants it is easy to become blase about yet another one. But Colibri's menu is creative. The presentation of the food is excellent eye candy. Their drinks don't disappoint."

  • "upscale Mexican food is hard to fine and Colibri is convenient to Union Square and theatres. It's always crowded in the evening and some of the foods may not be familiar, but the waitstaff are happy to explain the dishes. Never a bad dish here. Beware that the entrees are pretty "naked" so you'll want to order beans or other sides if you're interested. Prices are upscale, too, but not unreasonable."

  • "Two of us had the chicken mole poblano and enjoyed it (although we both said it's better in Mexico!). Our friend had the tortilla soup and we had a taste and enjoyed it as well. Great attentive service. A tad noisy for our tastes but we could hear one another's conversation."

  • "Our best for authentic mexican food really recommend this and the bar is just great "

  • "The food was good. Smaller portion sizes, but probably more appropriate as our society is overweight. Liked the decor and the tequila wall. That was a nice addition. Service was good, but could have been better at our table."

  • "I've been to Colibri many times and have never been disappointed. The food is always fresh, hot and delicious. They feature a different dish every month on the dinner menu that is always an extra treat. This month was bunuelos, a Mexican crab puff. They were worth the trip. Also try the featured tequila of the month. You'll enjoy the variety and flavor whether it's a flight or in your Margarita. Also, the churros for dessert are not to be missed. They're served with dolce de lece ice cream and the best on the planet."

  • "This is not a typical Mexican menu but the margaritas and guacamole are the best. We had the special of the day and though it was delicious, we find the regular menu items are the best. You can make a great meall from the appetizers!"

  • "We celebrated a birthday there. They were accommodating and let us bring home made desserts and served them at the table."
    Dined on 5/22/2014
  • "I never knew quite so many tequilas existed! I'm not much into tequila outside of a margarita, but if you are, there's bound to be ones you will like or have not tried here. The portions were a bit smaller than I'm used to, but the food was great. We started with the guacamole, which we ordered medium but really was more like mild (I hesitate to order "spicy" at a place I've never been before) but was fresh and tasty. I had the chile rellenos with vegetables and cheese, which was delicious. The churros for dessert were amazing."

  • "Very good meal with friendly and efficient service. Try the cactus as a vegetable side - excellent. The mole shrimp was a winner. Reasonable prices too!"

  • "This is my second (or possibly 3rd) time at Colibri and I have enjoyed each and every time. Whether it's the drinks (my favorite is the House Margarita) or the food. It's all wonderful. The service is excellent also and this time, I was actually sitting under an air conditioning vent and asked if it could be turned down a bit since it was pretty nippy. They were more than happy to do this for our group. Thank you Colibri. I will be back again."
