Colibri - Mexican Bistro
Colibri rocks on food and Tequilla. But the service is definitely, 'manana" took about 15 minutes before we saw a server after water was dropped and it wasn't that busy...however the food and tequilla selection more than made up for it. Seems to be family owned and most of the family works there....6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMLOVE THIS SPOTI picked Colibri because I wanted to impress a friend from out of town with a great meal and a fun restaurant. The staff here went above and beyond for us. We were late and I called and they held our table. We got distracted at the bar and started with some amazing margaritas, and they still held our table. The staff (especially Veronica) were so polite and gracious. The Guac is a must and so is the Mole. The food was amazing and the night was perfect. I love love this restaurant.6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMColibri is not a traditionalColibri is not a traditional Mexican restaurant. The food reflects a thoughtful and creative interpretation of Mexican cuisine before it was corrupted by its Americanization. Colibri's interpretations are very tasty and memorable. We had a lamb shank steamed in a banana leaf and dish comprised of pork belly and a combination of fruits and vegetables that included bing cherries and peaches.6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMI want their cookbook! We visited twice in one week, and everything was so delicious and well crafted that I asked the wait staff if they sold a cookbook. I'd gladly buy it. The servers were very attentive and friendly without being at all intrusive. It's a bit noisy but the food makes it worthwhile, and a corner seat on our second visit helped us hear each other better.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat BrunchMy daughter and I each had a very tasty brunch meal before going across the street to a play at ACT. Wonderful!6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMWelcoming ExperienceFresh homemade tortillas.....just like my abuelita used to make!6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMPhenomenal Filet! My friend and I were visiting from out of town, and found that this restaurant was a few blocks from our hotel, so figured we would give it a try....we LOVED it! There was a large selection of different tequilas, and margarita specials. The service was a bit slow at the beginning, as our complimentary soft tortillas and salsas seemed to come close to our meals, but otherwise it was great!(and, in fairness, it was very busy). My friend and I both ordered the Filet Mignon, with the goat cheese, mashed potatoes and spicy sauce. It was delicious, and both of our steaks were cooked perfectly (which from my experience, does not always happen in busy restaurants.). The prices were also very fair.6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food skimpy portionsWent with a group and really got good, and flavorful food. The only negative comments had to do with the size of the portions - which were small; and the mole sauce did not have the complexity of the great moles of Oaxaca - it was merely bitter. We'll definitely be back.6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMHad a great margarita. TheHad a great margarita. The guacamole with small corn tortillas was fantastic. The tamales had too little filling and too much corn meal, the empenadas were a little dry.6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful food and service!Wonderful food and service! I gave 4 stars only because it can become too noisy for any conversation at all. If you have more than 4 people in your party and want to converse, you should probably go somewhere else! Otherwise, food, drinks and service are top-notch although slightly pricey. Our group of 4 friends ordered a variety of dishes and especially liked:
- Guacamole served with homemade tortillas and outrageously good corn chips
- Ensalada Flor de Verano (butter lettuce, mango, avocado, flower petals and jícama with a cilantro-basil vinaigrette)
- Pechuga Rellena de Huitlacoche (chicken breast stuffed with a mix of huitlacoche, zucchini and fresh corn)
- Mango crème brulée
Great variety of margaritas - average price $125/29/2013 12:00:00 AMBrunch on SundayDisappointed at first that only the brunch menu was available as I seriously wanted to try the fish tacos. However, we had both kinds of the chilie relleno and both were outstanding! So savory, perfectly cooked, and delicious. No chips on the table here - but a packet of warm, freshly made corn tortillas that honestly, were the absolute best I've ever had and I'm a corn tortilla FREAK! Three kinds of salsa, all excellent, even the mild one. I can't wait to go back again when we're in the City!5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMMeal with a little one!We had a great time! We had our daughter, son-in- law, and 9 month old grandson with us. Little afraid to take the little guy to a nice spot, but it was fine. The service was quick, so no issues. We will come back and try other items, for sure!5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent as always...however, I've noticed the last few visits bar orders are taking a bit longer than usual, otherwise, great appetizers and entrees as usual.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMGood Happy Hour, but...Excellent happy hour prices, but the bill arrived with non-happy hour prices.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMI've had nearly every dishI've had nearly every dish on the menu and have never been disappointed. The food is great, the servers are friendly and welcoming. I'll be going back to try the duck very soon.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMAUTHENTIC MARGARITASHaving been to Mexico a few times, I know and love their margaritas. This restaurant serves the real deal, not your typical sweet-sour mixed ones usually found. Perfecto! Food was fresh and different from the usual as well. Freshly made tortillas served with excellent salsa. Will definitely go back. Great location too!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMWent for the fish tacosWe were told about Colibri and their amazing fish tacos! These did not disappoint! So good and fresh! The rest of our food was authentic and very fresh! Service was great, but the restaurant was very loud! Would definitely go back though and recommend!5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMLunch at ColibriDined with a friend who had never been before. He enjoyed the guacomole tremendously, and his
salad. I liked the agua fresca (watermellon) and my salad...but posole remains my favorite.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMTasty Mexican food; a bit priceyWith a group of 6, we all left impressed by the quality of food. The carnitas were tasty with a generous portion. The prawn with tamarind mole was unusual and delicious and came with a fluffy corn cake that we enjoyed. The margaritas were good, though a bit pricey for even a standard house margarita. The guacamole was excellent but it was a bit weird that it came with tortillas and only 5 of them for a party of 6. The waiter was nice and helpful until we wanted to split the check, at which point he got a bit snippy. Overall a tasty place, but a bit pricier than expected.4/29/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is a great spot locatedThis is a great spot located across from ACT and reasonably priced. We've enjoyed it several times but last weekend we had very slow and inattentive service and 3 of our 4 entrees were not great: prawns too spicey, fish tacos undercoooked and pork overcooked. Noise level is high unless you get in the back room. The staff are all very pleasant and we will certainly try it again.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMCentral ValleyArrived early for a reservation and were still seated immediately. Service was promptly initiated with constant water glass filling, cocktail service and welfare checks. My wife and I both ordered the Ceveche appetizer and Mole Pablano entre. They were both very good. The chicken was a little tough, but overall, very satisfying. Desert and coffee really hit the spot and we walked out feeling the $96.00 was worth it. It's not just a good dining experience but conveniently located across from the Curran Theater.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was excellent. ServiceFood was excellent. Service excellent. All food made on site and to order. It is amazing. Not to be missed.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent Mex Food Near TheatersExcellent Mexican Food in a fine setting with fast and friendly service4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMgreat place to dine, expensiveA very nice place, a little noisy, the food is very good and the service very professional.
I found the price to be a little expensive.
There are a few competable establishments in the very close area that give a similar experience for a fair price.
Great food and service if you are willing to pay the price.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is a perfect place toThis is a perfect place to go if you are going to a show on Geary (ACT or Curran), as it is directly across the street. The drinks are very good and fun...bottomless mimosa for brunch was an unexpected plus. We did not realize, however, that their SAT & SUN brunch menu does not have the full variety of menu options available on their dinner menu, which is not available until 3:00 pm on Weekends. As such, we were a bit disappointed that egg dishes were what we were choosing from, along with a few lunch like options. Overall the service was very good and the restaurant consistent in providing good dishes and a great variety of tasty drinks. I've been here about five times over the past 6 years and would go back.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMAs always, Colibri alwaysAs always, Colibri always shows us a great time for drinks, food and service. One of the theatres greatest jernts!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMGourmet MexicanI discovered Coli to thru Open Table because it is across the from ACT and' the Curran Theatre. It gets better and better!
The wait staff is so gracious and helpful and food is delicately seasoned and scruptuous. I would go there even if I weren't an avid theatre goer.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMWe always have such a wonderfulWe always have such a wonderful experience at this restaurant. Love bringing friends who have not been and seeing their delight! Great drinks and guacamole would be enough but don't stop there! And save room for dessert. GO. Especially convenient for theater goers.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMSpecial OccassionIt is a great Mexican Restaurant with a differ menu than your normal restaurants. Great location, especially if you are going to a play at the Currin Theater. The servers are friendly and helpful.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMStrawberry basil margaritaStrawberry basil margarita was delicous and different. Homemade guacamole was sooo good and the fresh tortillas were an extra special touch. Loved the chicken mole and the churro dessert! Very nice bustle to the restaurant and extremely convenient to the Curran Theater-4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was our second visitThis was our second visit to Colibri. Although we had gotten in for dinner as a walk-in last time, to skip the wait I made a reservation (even though we were going much earlier than last time as well). We were seated immediately and, as delicious as our first visit was, we tried all new foods and drinks. The watermelon agua fresca was amazing, as were our entrees and the mango creme brulee. It was almost agonizing to stray from the churros when we first ordered, but the mango creme brulee was a delightful lighter and sweet choice.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of my favorite dining spots! From when we were greeted by the hostess until we left that night, the service was impeccable, the food was delicious, and the drinks were amazing. This visit reminded me of why Colibri is one of my favorite dining spots!4/11/2013 12:00:00 AMAs always, Colibri is consistentAs always, Colibri is consistent in their great food. Each time I come to San Francisco I make time to eat at Colibri.4/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat place with lots of tequila.Great place with lots of tequila. The margaritas were awesome, homemade tortillas, empanadas & chile rellenos were fantastic BUT a $14 chips and guacamole dish is too expensive.4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMThe staff were very friendly. The staff were very friendly. We arrived about 10 minutes early they were crowded. Thank goodness we reserved a talbe and they seated us in a booth that I had requested.
The service was so fast that we were able to take our time and still walk around the neighborhood prior to the Jersey Boys show. I would recommend this restaurant to all . . .A very nice dinner.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMMuch too noisy for us littleMuch too noisy for us little old ladies. No way to have a conversation. Great food and service.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food...very small portionsVery small portions will lead me to not return soon.4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat location and deliciousGreat location and delicious food. A group of 8 of us saw a play at the Curran and walked across the street for dinner. Best to make reservations because it gets very busy. Everything from the appetizers to dessert was wonderful. You can't go wrong with anything you order here.4/3/2013 12:00:00 AMI'm not a big Mexican foodI'm not a big Mexican food fan, but this was great ! Gucacomole was excellent, they can adjust the heat the heat to order. Chips were some if the best. Of course margaritas were excellent too each dish had great unique flavor. Not just same ingredients combined in different ways.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMI love the food and the atmosphereI love the food and the atmosphere of this restaurant!!!3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat place! Loved the authenticGreat place! Loved the authentic food! Also liked the atmosphere.
We had a reservation at 8.. But got there a half hour early and were seated right away.
Pleasantly surprised but this place, and we will be back!!3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMOnly problem: Sat next toOnly problem: Sat next to four 20-something women who loudly dropped F-bombs every fifth word or so. Of course, the waiter continued to refill their bottomless mimosas, which did not help!3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMChurro PerfectI couldn't have been happier with Colibri-- delicious Mexican food with excellent margarita's and sangria. The stuffed pepper was amazing, and the tortilla soup had a nice kick, which was delightful since usually tortilla soup can be boring. The guac was also perfect. Ultimately I came for the Churro's though, and I did not leave disappointed-- they are PERFECT. I'll be back!3/21/2013 12:00:00 AMMy friend and I always goMy friend and I always go for lunch or dinner before attending ACT across the street. Perfect combination. We love it but you need to make reservations for dinner!!!3/20/2013 12:00:00 AMDinner was excellent! ServiceDinner was excellent! Service was outstanding. Room was VERY LOUD and my wife & I could not understand each other because of the noise!3/19/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat place to eat when goingGreat place to eat when going to the Curran theater. Convenient and food and service is great.3/19/2013 12:00:00 AMA fine new Mexican restaurantA fine new Mexican restaurant in Union Square - not Tex-Mex, Mexican. To be added to your roster of pre-theater eateries, right across the street from the Curran. Highly recommended.3/19/2013 12:00:00 AMWe have enjoyed Colibri forWe have enjoyed Colibri for years, but this was our first time for the Sunday brunch. We had chilaquiles and enchiladas, both were excellent. And there is just nothing better than a Colibri margarita!3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMColibri is a special place.Colibri is a special place. We have met dear friends and family there on several Sunday lunches, usually before attending ACT events right across the street.
The food is wonderful, authentic and truly gourmet. Handmade tortillas and custom guacamoles are made in real time for each table. Traditional dishes always have a special touch, even the desserts -- fresh, warm filled churros are delightful even when one is sated.
And the drinks menu is terrific -- a very large selection of tequilas and freshly made cocktails.
The service is kindly and personal -- tequila recommendations are fetched from the bar to let you see the label. Custom requests for diet or taste are nicely agreed-to.
Overall a jolly family celebration.3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMFun PlaceThe food here is always good. The staff is warm and responsive. We'll go back again. The old Mexican movies playing over the bar are really funny!3/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
