Sadly, I write about the very last night at Colborne Lane -- Claudio Aprile rather suddenly close the restaurant. So this report comes as a fond look back. The food was terrific -- exciting, surprising, bursting with unexpected combinations of flavor. One could have a small criticism on this or that detail, but that hardly matters in view of the overall excellence. I look forward to Claudio's next act.

Colbourne Lane had become our special place. It was the restaurant we would make a special overnight trip to downtown Toronto for. ensu. Last weekend we celebrated my 40th birthday. We had a wonderful meal, but I found myself tearing up several times. We learned as we came to our reservation that Saturday Feb 23, 2013 was the last night of service for this wonderful gastronomic delight. We were able to personally meet Claudio Aprile and thank him for giving us a place to treat ourselves over the last few years. It was a fine dining gem in the city, and I am sure its loss will be felt by fans. The restauranteur is going to focus on his chain of Origins restaurants, but I think that it will be hard to recapture that magic Colbourne Lane held.

came here for the Last night of Winterlicious 2013! Must say the dark door with blue lighting makes you feel like you've entered into a different, culinary world. The service as soon as we walked in was efficient, with a quick coach check and escort to our table. Just the ambiance alone sets the romantic, intimate and chilled out mood. appetizer: Pickled Irish organic salmon + creme fraiche + avocado + puffed tapioca + yuzu vinaigrette --cooked to perfection, and culinary presentation was spectacular, the creme fraiche and avocado complimented the salmon since salmon's bland flavor absorbs the complexity of flavors. 5/5 entree: Striploin + celery root + pickled burdock + fried spinach + yu choy --medium cooked, though I woul

The look of the place is very hipster meets grunge. The staff were very Friendly with out being annoying. They described eat plate to us while it was served And always made sure all drinks were full. The food was fantastic! Each bite was a burst of a delicious science experiment All the plates are fabulous works or art that are almost too pretty to eat I started with a picketed salmon, then a suculant pork belly with mushrooms & for dessert A deconstructed pumpkin pie with a lemon gelato like fluffy goodness. I will be coming back for the tasting menu.

Amazing food - it rekindled my romance with molecular gastronomy! It is apparent how much thought and creativity went into the menu.. We had the Winterlicious dinner, but the chef certainly didn't compromise here.. So glad I found this gem, I believe I made the reservation after reading a Toronto Life article about the best places to explore this Licious season..

A bit too busy for it's own good. I appreciate that no-shows a problem in the restaurant industry, but the firm phone call the day before telling me about my dining timeslot (strictly limited to two hours with a 15 minute grace for being late) is innately obnoxious when it's coupled with the OpenTable reminder email and the reminder I set on my own calendar. The first two courses came quickly, but the third course took forever even though we ordered everything at once. The restaurant also needs to give more power to its waitstaff. One of the things we ordered (tea) was messed up and had to be taken off the bill, but it took forever for our server to find all the necessary managers in order to do it. Quick checkout needs to be a priority.

Aside from a rather cold and uninviting greeting from the host, our visit was perfect. Our server was knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. The atmosphere was simple and refined, however the restaurant was less than crowded and thus gave off a bit of an 'empty' feel. The food was creative, visually appealing and delicious - a delight to the senses. Overall - great experience and will be back again - especially for the desserts!!

Honestly one of the best restaurants in TO. The chef is truly innovative and passionate about his food. Everything came out perfectly executed striking the perfect pairing of flavours & textures. All their dishes were remarkable... especially their Pork Belly... Fork tender, moist succulent meat embelished with thin layers of buttery melty park fat encased in a tangy charred crisp edge....

Was our first visit to Colborne Lane and we celebrated a birthday, menu was short and seasonal, also an option for the tasting menus, normally we do opt for the tasting menu but in this instance we did not as there were 3 dessert courses out of 9 and we are not dessert people. Our waiter Sawhill was very attentive and accomodating to our request to serve our dishes in the order we liked them. Also mentioned we were not in a hurry and wanted to draw out the evening, which he happily did. The food was excellent and inventive. Squash soup (thai inspired) delicious! Risotto and beef shanks were so flavourful. All the tables around us seemed to be enjoying themselves and loving the food and presentation. Will definitely go again!

Great dinner excellent flavour. Would recommend tasting menu instead of a la carte - in the end you end up getting more variety for similar cost. Would also be good to get some music variety - Saturday was apparently U2 night. The room is a bit dark to see the great presentation of food.

Although I have indicated appropriate for "Special Occasions" and "Romantic", that is based primarily on the spectacular food served in splendid fashion. The seating opportunities for a special occasion or a romantic dinner are not really in keeping with the opportunity that could be exploited by this restaurant. With better "seating for two", with a better sense of segregation from dining neighbours, this would be our number one "go to" place.

We did a tasting menu at Colborne Lane. The food was good however, my expectations are very high. For someone that doesn't go all out to fancy restaurants all the time, I would say this is one of the best restaurants in the city. I've beeen here before and I was floored from the service, the presentation, the food and atmosphere. I would HIGHLY recommend doing a tasting menu at Colborne Lane. I also want to mention that the drinks are amazing too.

We were very pleased with the taste and quality of our food items. The portions were a bit on the light side and the wine was overpriced. Atmosphere was good and the service was as well... actually, it may have been a bit too responsive as we felt a tad rushed with our appetizers and meal. All in all though, it was a very good experience and we would visit again. JJ

Ordered the 9-course tasting menu which was an absolute treat! Such a great array of dishes and very elegantly presented. Dishes were very flavorful and the variety of molecular techniques were very interesting...including their signature table side ice cream prep! I would highly recommend Colborne Lane for those that have a little extra cash in their pockets, as it is a bit pricey, but well worth it. Only 2 downsides--have couple slightly cheaper wine options and perhaps serve less dessert. Don't get me wrong, the desserts were amazing, and complaining about too much dessert seems a little silly, but the 1st dessert was such a generous portion that it was tough to get through the delicious 2nd and 3rd desserts. 1st world problems...

The food was amazing! Every dish was more surprising and delicious than the last. Such intricate flavours. We were out on a romantic evening and our only small complaint would be that we were seated in a corner, against the wall, and our view was of the exit sign and the servers station. The restaurant was only half full, so I'm not sure why we were in the worst seat in the house. Service and attentiveness was adequate, but not as good as I would have expected from such a nice restaurant. We waited ten minutes with our dessert menus on the table before one of the servers (not ours) noticed and came over. That being said, the gentleman who greeted us at the door was warm, friendly and inviting, a real class act!

I found the sparse decor off putting as I arrived but it grew on me so that by the end of the evening I understood that the food was the intended to be the star or show piece of the experience and for the most part it certainly was. The artistry of each dish was matched only by the complexity of the flavours. A truly enjoyable meal was prepared and presented to all 4 at our table. The staff were polished and helpful being accutely aware of the composition of each dish and helpful in explaining the nature and attributes of the obscure ingredients. The only negative was the wine selection which demonstrated a serious lack of depth and age. The super Tuscan and Bordeauxs in particular were too young to enjoy.

Always innovative and delicious with friendly, attentive service, Colborne Lane has yet to disappoint us. The 9-course tasting menu was marvelous, and the paired wines were delightful as well. Both my wife and I thought that perhaps Colborne had lost just a touch of its culinary "edge" compared to when they first opened, but maybe that's because so many other restaurants have copied Claudio Aprile over the years and, after all, there are only so many things you can do with liquid nitrogen. Nevertheless, an excellent evening was had by all.
