Diner Reviews
  • "I was expecting this to be an incredible dinner with well-chosen wines for the pairing. However, it was disappointing. The food was good but not great and the sommelier was off on 7/8 wines that were paired. At this price, I would expect the meal to be perfect and the wine pairing to not detract from the meal. The service was good but some of the wait staff rushed to take away partially eaten food or unfinished wine. "

  • "We booked Coi from Australia due to it's Michelin rating. Having experienced fine dining in Melbourne recently we were disappointed by the lack of professionalism in the staff group. We felt that having wait staff filling in between school and college detracted from our experience considerably. We did have a very good German born female employee who's warm ness made up for the rather sterile feel of the space. The food was undoubtedly a great standard and the wine pairings were good. A welcoming glass of champagne was a great start."

  • "The food was excellent, the wine pairings were atrocious, worst i've ever had by a restaurant at this level. Service was sub-par, they brought us the wrong water all night, the waiter mumbled so we couldn't understand a word he said all night, it took us 30 minutes to pay and leave, NOT 2 Michelin star service. You should tell the guest if your wine pairing is exclusively white wine. Several of the wines felt forced and over powered the dish (the pairing with the sunchoke dumpling was particularly offensive, the wine had way to much acid for the dish). After I told the sommelier I did not enjoy the Riesling he then had the waiter bring the rest of the wines because he was afraid to face us."

  • "I chose Coi for a Friday night date based on a review in 7x7. It did not prepare me for the excellent food and service. The gorgeous, unique dishes are crafted with surgical precision to evoke specific taste sensations. The staff operates like an orchestra, finely tuned and timed, but they're also very amiable and professional. I only wish the menu was within my budget for a monthly visit... But that said, it is well worth the price."

  • "I really enjoyed all of the courses. The atmosphere was so quiet and tranquil. The servers were very polite and friendly. The presentation of the food was really amazing and impressive. Overall, the experience was amazing and I'd love to go again."

  • "Plate after plate of foodie heaven...the vegetable dishes were actually the stars!"

  • "Food and service were average at best. We spent $600 and thought it all was terrible. Four nights later we spent $400 at Canlis in Seattle. If you get a reasonably priced fare, you should spend the $200 and fly from San Fran to Seattle, dine at Canlis and then fly back to San Fran and tell the folks at Coi exactly how bad their restaurant is."

  • "Great restaurant. COI deserves the third michelin star."

  • "Ingredients lean toward grains, vegetables and fruits, with the occasional detour into animal proteins. Flavors skew bright and acidic, while earthy, salty and pungent make appearances at just the right moments. Preparations are playful and surprising, experimental but not gratuitously so, always in service of the food. Service is efficient, informative and unobtrusive. Wine pairings are spot on. Coi is worthy of its Michelin stars, and a dinner here will easily justify the dent you'll be putting in your credit card. Highly recommended."

  • "The wine pairing was excellently chosen, all the food was impeccably executed. I do feel that for the amount of money you'll be paying, there are other Bay Area meals done slightly better, or equally well but somewhat less pricey."

  • "Although I did not think it possible, Daniel Patterson's Coi continues to impress and surprise. This week the surprises were (1) an elegant Steamed Black Trumpet-Sunchoke Dumpling with brown butter and mushroom dashi, and (2) the rich Dungeness Crab and Beef Tendon Soup with asian pear, finger lime, and cilantro. In addition, we were also served a dish that Coi has been one of my favorites for some time: the Beet And Goat cheese Tart (Broken, Inverted). Patterson is moving out of his Michelin Two Stars into Three Star territory. Not to be missed for foodies or a special occasion."

  • "The (small) plates were innovative and for the most part quite successful, but the price (meal plus wine and obligatory tip) was $300/person, about a 50% markup over what was warranted. Coi was good, but at that price level one expects outstanding--which it wasn't."

  • "It's hard to call an $800 meal for 2 worth it, but it was. Eleven small tastings, each one literally a work of art. This is serious cooking, and truly great food. Not for every day (or week, or month!). But for a once-in-awhile foodie splurge, I can't imagine doing much better than Coi. Service was exceptional. Only slight complaint, is that we were seated in the smaller of two dining rooms, which emptied out earlier, so we felt a little disconnected from the other diners."

  • "Brilliant experience of world class standard. The food was outstanding and the soup almost bought tears to my eyes as memories of my honeymoon in burgundy France at L'Esperance came flooding back. The wine matching was perfect and please Daniel if you come (back) to Australia please let me know. Will definitely be back - Zion I have your card :-) unforgettable!"

  • "I took my wife for Valentine's Day and it was a perfect romantic spot. The service was impeccable, friendly and where very knowledgable about the food and wine. The food was insanely good, we've been there before, multiple times, and every experience is a treasure. We are always surprised and always enjoy our dining experience."

  • "Probably the best fine dining experience in San Francisco. Just amazing food, wine and service. Absolutely love this place. Casta and all the staff are wonderful and so friendly. It's not stuffy in the slightest. Love this place."

  • "The food is very creative and there will probably be more than one dish with a flavor profile that you have never experienced before. I was blown away by every dish that came out. I can imagine that I will remember several of the dishes for years. It is definitely expensive, but so worth it."

  • "Fantastic experience with wonderful food, service, and ambience. It was far from cheap, and those no a la carte, but when they put together a menu like the one we had who needs choices?"
    Dined on 1/31/2014
  • "The plates that come out look like paintings and the tastes are innovative combinations with a wide-ranging wine list. The staff is well trained and explain the food and wine list. Attention has been paid to every detail-from the comfortable seating to the appropriate soundtrack-resulting in a unique dining experience. Some of the dishes and flavor combinations are so unique that the memory lingers on for days."

  • "Looking for some fine dining one night with my partner ... I made a series of reservations at places I hadn't heard of. (I've been out of the SF food scene for a few years.) Made a reservation at COI without doing any research. And, well, WOW. Very pleased. I recommend it to anyone interested in exploring food."

  • "Food was excellent and met our already high expectations. The wine pairings were outstanding, except for the dessert wine which was difficult given the 2 desserts. Service was good, however, a little casual and not the more formal style you might expect from a restaurant of this caliber and price-point. Overall an excellent experience and would go again."

  • "I'm an experienced foodie, having been to numerous 1, 2, and 3 Michelin star restaurants. While the service at Coi was outstanding, the food was so disappointing. Not only was there very little of it, but for $600, I would have expected much more protein than veggies! I will not be back."

  • "Coi is surprisingly located in a somewhat unsavory section of Broadway. However once inside, it is a memorable and worthwhile experience in terms of both food and service. The service was impeccable across the board - from the host, to the waiter, to the servers. The tasting menu was outstanding - the flavors of each dish (plus the wine pairings) were perfectly balanced. Each course had complex layers of flavor. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a unique dining experience."

  • "Definitely a unique experience, but not entirely a pleasant one. Overpriced, drawn out ( meal takes 3 hrs) and a bit smug."

  • "Coi invites you to pay attention to the wonders of what can happen inside your mouth. A series of small plates play with contrasts, texture, and color---sweet and salty, pungent and airy, citrus and smooth---so one slows down---to enter a mindful eating zone, to explore nuance and try to figure out origins. The service is attentive but not pretentious. Coi will close in January to freshen its decor. A good idea. The food, the intimacy, the informality make Coi a unique pleasure."

  • "The tasting menu we enjoyed this December was phenomenal. The wine pairing was not as trilling I have to say. We went with the 8 wines for 125$ and 3/8 were good pairings, 2 were fair and 3 were bad. The quantities poured barely 2 oz. were insufficient for the price range of the wine served that night. The wine list seemed to offer a lot of option I would treat myself with a nice bottle for the same 250$ we paid. The service and food was excellent."

  • "My wife and I went there to celebrate her birthday. We walked through the front door, but there was no one there. There wasn't the standard greeter's podium that you see in almost all restaurants. At first, we thought that maybe we actually came in through the back door. We wandered through the restaurant all the way to the kitchen and then back again. Finally, a gentleman came and greeted us. I gave him my name, and we were seated immediately. The decor is very nice--reminded us of an elegant sushi restaurant in Japan. Brighter than many other restaurants, but that is the norm in Japan, as well. So, we liked it very much--gave us a chance to really see the food. The food was extraordinary. Put it on your bucket list."

  • "Exorbantly priced for what you get. I could've bought a round trip plane ticket somewhere & ate dinner a fabulous dinner for the same price. Our bill for 2 was over $800. They auto grat at 18%. The wine pairings were lovely but they only give you a little taste. The food was great, don't get me wrong but I've had a better meal at Boulevard & spent less than $100!"

  • "We took a friend to Coi for a special occasion - just getting together socially. The food was outstanding! The restaurant was very quiet the Saturday after Thanksgiving, but those who were there were getting great service, and a variety of perfectly prepared and presented dishes. We're very happy to have been there, and look forward to a reason to return!"

  • "Disappointment Will never go back. Food is poor and underwhelming. Hard to believe it is 2 michelin stars. Price is not worth even a half of the value."

  • "Coi consistenly has the most creative and thoughtful food in SF. We have never been served the same dish twice in the many times we have eaten here. It is very expensive - but not compared to comparable restaurants and comparable tasting menus. I would strongly recommend them for someone who is looking for a more unusual meal that stretches their tasting experiences and budget. It is our favorite restaurant in SF when we want an experience vs just a night out."

  • "I've had the privilege of dining at some amazing restaurants throughout North America, Europe and South East Asia. The quality of food and service at Coi while impressive, is over priced. The chef is certainly talented and the service staff knowledgeable. However, there were one or two dishes in the tasting menu where I thought the chef was trying to be too clever. The beet dish provided an upside down clash of tastes that was unpleasant. Having said that, the smoked egg, soups and lamb chop were out of this world. The final bill of $600 + USD for two people including five drinks was ridiculous. Would I recommend Coi to a foodie? Sure I would, if they had exceptionally deep pockets."
