Diner Reviews
  • "Dinner at Coi is a wonderful experience. Everything is perfect. The creativity is amazing--each course was explained and the tastes were sensational. The service was perfect in a most attractive setting. Coi is the best."

  • "The food is very good, the portions very small. Very expensive for the amount of food you get."

  • "Upon my request the courses were prepared gluten free and without cream/milk. The chef baked GF bread for me which was served warmed with butter. I recommend ordering the wine pairing with your meal which enhances the overall dining experience. I loved receiving a printed copy of the menu and wine selections at the end of dinner."

  • "Wow! Unbelievable service. Prix fix meal, but... "Sir, if you don't like tomatoes we can bring you a different dish." "Don't love eggplant? We can make a replacement dish" Everything was top notch at Coi. The staff was attentive for every wish and desire, but you hardly knew they were there. Great explanations for every flavor in every dish of our 13 courses. Extremely knowledgeable waiter! What a delight. First class service. First class food. Exciting and different flavors in every course."

  • "Dinner was great, my first time with a fixed tasting menu and wasn't sure how I would enjoy it. So nice to sit down and have yummy tasting dish served one right after another. I probably would not of ordered some of the dishes if they had not been selected for me. Didn't feel so full that I couldn't move as with other tasting menus I've had. Only draw back was service. While it was fine for such an extravagant meal I thought it could of been a bit more personal. We had 4-5 different people serving our meal through out the evening. Other wise a lovely meal. I would go defiantly go back for special occasion. I know the menu changes based on the season/ingredients but the smoke egg with caviar was amazing!!"

  • "Maybe we are not with it, but I really have to admit that the food here was just okay. The presentation was nice, but the taste was just not there for us. We really were excited to try this since it had recently won accolades. While the presentation and ambience and service were excellent, the taste of the food was mediocre. I think more attention needs to be paid to unique taste rather than presentation."

  • "There's nothing better than enjoying an amazing meal without any thinking. Every course was amazing. We couldn't have been happier with our experience. We chose to just do the wine pairing for ease and tasted some amazing wines. We sat in the first dining room and loved it. We only had one other couple near us so the noise was perfect."

  • "Bang for the buck, my opinion there are many other restaurants that can beat Coi. Although the pigeon was not to my liking, everything else was superb. Well thought of and balanced. It was a 3 hour dinner - i looked at it as a $200/hr dinner as there were two of us( my wife & i ). Was it worth it? Hhmmmm..... The occasion better be extra special."

  • "High level of standard and creativity that went into food planning and cooking. The whole course of food builds up momentum to end with the main dish that lives up to the expectation of quality. Very satisfying meal and experience."

  • "The food was amazing. Beautifully thought out! We dined there for our wedding anniversary and were so pleased!"

  • "Our dinner at Coi was just wonderful. The place is beautiful and quiet. Our waiter, a friendly guy from New Orleans, treated us like friends. Out of the 12 courses, there was only one that was just OK. The vegetables were beautiful. The desserts were fantastic. It is expensive, but it was worth it. I loved the place"

  • "The food and service were extraordinary. We had called in advance to let the chef know that my beloved is a vegetarian, and her vegetarian meal was exceptional as was my meal. We also had called in advance to let the restaurant staff know that my beloved needed some special accommodations for her comfort. From the moment we arrived the staff were clearly aware of this and very helpful. Our evening was perfect."

  • "This restaurant has to be one of the top restaurants in San Francisco! The atmosphere is unique, warm, comfortable and very intimate. The service is unbelievable! As a dietitian, the food was excellent using the freshest and healthiest ingredients in the most artistic and creative presentation I have experienced - with a broad spectrum of flavors! I most enjoyed that many of the 11 courses were prepared without cream sauces and fried foods."

  • "Portions much too small. One dish, spotted prawns consisted of a single medium sized shrimp cut into 3 pieces with a Tbsp of sauce. Bread was ordinary and served midway through the dinner. Wines were overpriced. Service was uneven. Left hungry after spending $800 for dinner (for 2) with tax and service charge."

  • "A once in a lifetime experience! It was all sublime, the food, knowledgeable waitstaff, decor ....the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because there was a young child in the dining room, making an age appropriate amount of noise...which was totally inappropriate for such a stratospherically expensive restaurant."

  • "We went to Coi for my birthday, and it was a real treat. The food is incredible, the staff attentive and kind, the wine interesting and delicious. As an added bonus, Daniel Patterson regularly delivers courses directly to diners. So wonderful to see a chef as dedicated to the success of his restaurant as he is!"

  • "I went to San Francisco for three nights and Coi was for sure the best moment on my holiday. The food was amazing, an interesting mixture of flavors and textures that keep you curious for the next dish. I also have to give an A+ for the service. Besides the service during the dinner, they also helped me after I left, when I had a problem with my car. It could have turn my night into a disaster, but they took care for me and made me unconcerned."

  • "We went to Coi for a special occasion and found it to be way overpriced. There were three of us and the only option was a price fixed dinner at $195/person with an extra 18% service charge added on. Corkage was $40 for the first bottle and $80 for the second. There were a lot of attentive waiters, but the space was small and lacked much ambience."

  • "For $500 for dinner for two and a couple of drinks I have high expectations. Coi did not meet my expectations even a little. The only redeeming quality was the presentation/plating which was beautiful. The food was just not tasty and everything was steamed. I've done prix-fixe several times before and paid a lot less for much better food. My husband and I were very disappointed. What was worse than the mediocre food was that we had to request another drink. The caliber of a restaurant can be judged by its waitstaff and our drinks were empty for almost 5 minutes before we ended up asking for another. We only had two drinks each over the 1.5 hour experience so it shouldn't have been so taxing for the staff. "

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner at Coi. The food was outstanding and the service the same. Very nice ambience except for the tables being quite close to each other. Highly recommended! "

  • "Was there to celebrate 35 years anniversary with my wife on 5/30. Great dinner in general, surprising dishes very flavored. Everything was good excepted the last meal , a pigeon way under cooked we could not finish. For a ~ $ 700 dinner , you would expect it to be perfect, this just makes the whole experience down. Although we mentioned this to our waiter, the restaurant did not do any gesture, they just say sorry you did not like it ... At this price range, you can have a lot of other choices."

  • "We had overall a very good experience, but it was less than expected. The venue is beautiful and unique. The staff was exceptionally friendly and engaging. Almost every dish was both interesting and wonderful, from the grilled prawns to asparagus to caviar. Some of the dishes were really mind blowing. Here's the rub, the pigeon was just awful, stringy and undercooked. There are some things you do because you can and some things you do because you should, this was the former, not the latter. On a fixed menu I really don't think something so questionable should be included. There is a reason pigeon is not commonly consumed here It was a down grade to an otherwise wonderful meal. For a restaurant like this, there should be no misses. "

  • "Okay so first off the price is a bit on the out-there scale for me. Roughly $700 for two! However, it really was worth it, I mean every dish was outstanding! It is a place that will remain in my memories for a long time. Not many great restaurants in "The City" can do that for me. Places like Gary Danko did not come close to this place in the food experience. Honestly, the worst part of the dinner for me was the coffee which I ordered with dessert, defiantly not worth the $8. Yet, every other part of the service and food presented was top notch and handled with care. If I had the income I would be back again. However, it will be a place reserved for resetting the high bar of food experience that all others continue to miss. "

  • "I found Coi on the 50 best restaurants in the world. Since I would be in town on a vacation, I decided to book a table. From the instant we entered the nondescript front door we were enthralled by the ambiance. Each of the wait staff was extremely knowledgable & helpful with all aspects of our dining experience. There were 11 courses & each was more delicious and visually stimulating than the last. The highlight of the meal was when my friend purchased the chef's book. He happened to be in the kitchen that night & offered to sign her book with an inscription. She was extremely pleased. Thank you Coi for a very memorable meal in this wonderful city. "

  • "Fantastic Dinner in a town known for its food! It reminded us of our own Nashville Cat Bird Seat. Service was top notch and the ambiance was very relaxed. Wine suggestions paired wonderfully with our plates."

  • "I think the worst part of this dinner was that we ended up tipping twice, 40%, because they add tip then include another tip line, which in the dim light after a long meal was a shifty little move. The service was amateur. Every five minutes they interrupt to switch plates and tell you a long story about your food. Also, they whisper, so you have to keep asking, "what?" It's very awkward and considering how much you're paying, unacceptable. The food was fine, the wine terrible. My husband and I feel great shame for how much money we spent on this lackluster meal. Anything would've been better, including room service. Finally, the $100 per person fee for cancelling your res is obnoxious. I wish swallowed the $200 and cancelled, though."

  • "First of all, it's Coi like Coiffure ("kwa"), not Coi ("koy") like a fish. Second it's definitely one of the best restaurants ever. An eleven course tasting menu? Yes. We spent 4 hours discussing and loving every morsel. The wine pairings, at least 8, are varied, educational and well explained. Coi is a wonderful experience and the chef is hitting on all cylinders. However it's expensive. I think it's worth it for a one of a kind experience. The ambience is lovely, but can be a little crowded. The service is outstanding and the food is worth every Michelin star they have earned (two at this time). A night to remember."

  • "Had a fantastic experience dining at Coi. It's one of the first tasting menus I've done in the city (I will do more), and I have no complaints. The dishes were interesting and fun to try. More than anything though, the staff was fantastic."

  • "Cerebral, exceptional New California cuisine with carefully sourced ingredients prepared in imaginative but not gimmicky ways. Carrots and coffee? It works. Particularly notable dishes include the Shigoku oysters barely kissed by the grill, a spear of asparagus cooked in its juices served cold with radishes, sprouted wheat berries, and shiso, and a marvellous Dungeness crab dish that married the sweetness of the crab with the newest of garden peas. The dish included the whole plant, from the shoots to the pods. Heirloom popcorn grits, a carefully structured napoleon of morel and layers of potato...it's all perfectly conceived and balanced. The dining room is not particularly private or inviting, but it's a small flaw."

  • "I had been raving about Coi to a foodie friend, and we went to celebrate a well-received national presentation. The dinner conversation was full of 'Ohh....' 'Mmmm....' '(gasp)' - we were to discuss upcoming projects but all we could do was talk about the wonderful food in front of us, so elegantly plated and flavorful beyond reason!"

  • "I was expecting this to be an incredible dinner with well-chosen wines for the pairing. However, it was disappointing. The food was good but not great and the sommelier was off on 7/8 wines that were paired. At this price, I would expect the meal to be perfect and the wine pairing to not detract from the meal. The service was good but some of the wait staff rushed to take away partially eaten food or unfinished wine. "

  • "We booked Coi from Australia due to it's Michelin rating. Having experienced fine dining in Melbourne recently we were disappointed by the lack of professionalism in the staff group. We felt that having wait staff filling in between school and college detracted from our experience considerably. We did have a very good German born female employee who's warm ness made up for the rather sterile feel of the space. The food was undoubtedly a great standard and the wine pairings were good. A welcoming glass of champagne was a great start."

  • "The food was excellent, the wine pairings were atrocious, worst i've ever had by a restaurant at this level. Service was sub-par, they brought us the wrong water all night, the waiter mumbled so we couldn't understand a word he said all night, it took us 30 minutes to pay and leave, NOT 2 Michelin star service. You should tell the guest if your wine pairing is exclusively white wine. Several of the wines felt forced and over powered the dish (the pairing with the sunchoke dumpling was particularly offensive, the wine had way to much acid for the dish). After I told the sommelier I did not enjoy the Riesling he then had the waiter bring the rest of the wines because he was afraid to face us."

  • "I chose Coi for a Friday night date based on a review in 7x7. It did not prepare me for the excellent food and service. The gorgeous, unique dishes are crafted with surgical precision to evoke specific taste sensations. The staff operates like an orchestra, finely tuned and timed, but they're also very amiable and professional. I only wish the menu was within my budget for a monthly visit... But that said, it is well worth the price."
