A word from Cocotte
The menu of French-inspired local food changes once or twice a month to celebrate seasonal ingredients. A hand-selected wine list features French and local Regional wines. House cocktails are balanced, rooted in classic recipes and techniques.

The space is a warm and inviting elevated bistro concept, inspired by the 1920 building's original French doors that line an entire wall of the dining room.

Comfortable, approachable, lush, and alluring. Cocotte is perfect for cocktails, dinner, happy hour, or special occasions.

Please be aware that due to the size and layout of our dining room, we are best suited for more intimate parties of 6 or less. However, we do our best to accommodate all reservations. Thank you.

Diner Reviews
  • "There were four of us and we each ordered something different for our 3 courses (not on special). I liked the white bean and nettle soup quite a bit. My halibut was well cooked and the English pea sides (pea shoots, Pureed peas, green peas) were a nice pairing. The champagne cocktail with Dubonnet was an elegant touch. My dates main was the rabbit crepinette which was unfortunately quite bony. One of our friends had the brined pork chop and liked it. His wife liked her salmon dish. I am not sure what I thought of their take on carrot cake. The cake itself was too dry and there was no sign of the promised buttercream frosting."

  • "We have been to Cocotte several times and enjoyed it. We have a table special to us: table 10. We've asked for it when reserving and gotten it. But this time, for some reason, they put us in the new back room, which is okay, but far from the vibrant front room. Food still very good. Service okay. Back room a disappointment."

  • "Cocotte is the kind of restaurant you want to keep quiet about. It does everything perfectly from the bread and flavored butter right up to the take home gift of madeleines. Food is assertively flavored but in a relaxed way. Every ingredient in a dish should be there - it's not about 45 different competing flavors, rather the right mix. The room is calm and feels like a combination of a Paris bistro and a Pacific NW neighborhood spot."

  • "Food and service is always excellent. The ambience is the icing on the cake for us, especially when it's raining, which, of course, rarely happens in Portland. It just has a cozy, European feel on a rainy evening. "

  • "Everything is great , Could use a regular salad on the menu , But all the entrees were killer. Great for a special occasion"

  • "Nice Northwest balance: casual atmosphere with heavy linen napkins. Fine wine list, moderately priced. Number of entrees has grown since they opened an adjacent room for more tables. Cannot go wrong with any entree. Sauces so good that I ate my veggies just to mop up the extra sauce. Didn't try dessert. Staff friendly and casual and service prompt, but not hustling the diners out. Not a "$" restaurant, but shared appetizer, large entree, and wine came to $40 per person -- a great bargain, for the top-quality food. Bottom line: unqualified recommendation!"

  • "First time visitor to Cocotte. All of our food preparations were flavorful and well executed. Particular raves for duck prosciutto, roasted cauliflower and a crepe filled with rabbit."

  • "My wife and I have been fans of Cocotte for some time now and eat there as often as we can. We love the French decor, the warmth of the cozy room. The service is always good and the food we think outstanding. Cocotte is one of the reasons Portland is such a great restaurant city. Cocotte is tops with us."

  • "We went for my son's birthday. The staff was cheerful , welcoming and helpful. While the menu is French, it is interesting and innovative rather than traditional. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed our meal greatly."

  • "Have dined here several times over past 2-3 years and have really enjoyed every dinner presentation until this one. My partner had the halibut on peas and lentils which was nice to look at but a) the fish was a bit overcooked and the legumes were undercooked (much too crunchy for our taste) and b) it did not seem to be prepared as described on the menu. I had the farrotto which was tasty but too much farro and not enough wild mushrooms in my opinion. The fiddlehead ferns are cute to look at but don't add much to the taste. The mizuna salad which we split was excellent but was served as the whole salad without an extra plate. The server disappeared once she served the salad. In general service was not helpful. Not likely to return."

  • "Love this restuarant, love this corner with 7 fabulous eateries within 100'. Like people, if there is one good one, there will be several. Out of towners, hop in a cab and go there. You will find something you love. It is the hottest dining spot in Portland right now."

  • "This was my third time at Cocotte and not as good as I had remembered. My rabbit was braised to near tastelessness, and the cocoa dumplings that accompanied it were just plain weird. My dining companions, though, seemed to enjoy their pork chop, salmon and chicken, though no one raved about their food. The 'menu changes, however, and I'm hopeful that another visit will rekindle the fondness that previous visits engendered."

  • "I had heard a lot about this restaurant so was excited to try it during Portland Dining Month. First course was a choice of warm olives or pickled veggies & fruit. Since my husband and I are not huge fans of pickled fruit, we opted for the olives, but were overwhelmed by so many. The second course was brandade or pork rillettes. Both were pretty bland. The pork chops were ordinary. I've had better at less notable restaurants, Shiloh Inn near the airport for one! It's likely that the $29 per person menu did not feature some of their best and more traditional French dishes, like rabbit, which is unfortunate because we are not likely to return based on what we experienced. Ambience was nice and reminiscent of France."

  • "Table by a window. 3-course meal during Portland Dining Month delivered quality and quantity for $29 per person. Attentive service and a complimentary appetizer from the kitchen. What's not to like?"

  • "The 3 course menu was very interesting so we decided to try. The food is very good and intriguing. Ample supply of bread. The 3 course option had little financial value($1 dollar saving on one option and $3 savings on the other options) Nonetheless a excellent place to try."

  • "I continue to be impressed by Cocotte. We dined here this time with the Portland Dining Month. The choices were reasonable and seemed to be in line with other items on the menu. As there were two options for each course, my wife and I had one of each. The bread with sage butter to start the meal really set the tone. The warmed olives and pickled vegetables took it up another step. The star of the show were the amazing entrées with honey marinated pork chops and farotto with mushrooms. Perfectly cooked, tender and full of flavor. We will be back for sure."

  • "Took my beloved here during Portland Dining Month. I chose Cocotte because it was one of few PDM menus that offered a vegetarian entree and a third course that was not dessert, meeting both of our burdensome dietary restrictions. Everything was delicious, and we had a lovely, romantic meal in this elegant, comfortable space."

  • "We're new to Portland as of 2 years ago and have explored most of the better known restaurants, but we we're pleased when we stumbled onto Cocotte before it was listed in any restaurant guides. It's an exceptional restaurant experience in a French bistro atmosphere, quite informal but of consistently high quality. The menu focuses on fish and white meat and the preparation and presentation are equal to the very best foodie places we've visited in Portland. The bar makes interesting and unique cocktails, the wine list is carefully chosen and moderately priced for a restaurant of this level, and the waitstaff are knowledgeable and attentive. Been here 10-12 times, always satisfied A small gem to add to Portland's list of fine restaurants!"

  • "My only request is that I learn how to make that amazing Halibut dish I ate the other night!!!! The fresh english pea puree started the plate. It was followed by french lentils, perfectly cooked and seasoned(cooked in broth?). Laid on top was a beautiful piece of Halibut, seared with amazing flavor and finished in the oven. The sauteed mushrooms added to the dish were perfect! So many places cut their mushrooms too thick and do not cook them long enough. Cocotte knows food. I have to say that I was not excited about the Pork Rillette. It was dry and needed more flavor. I would also add to the plate some cornichon or some type of pickle to add to the mustard and bread. Thank you for the amazing meal!"

  • "the food, service, and ambience is always wonderful; that's why it's our choice for an anniversary dinner now two years in a row. We love that it's not noisy - rare in popular restaurants! But I'm disappointed that although we had a very early reservation (6pm) and had specifically asked through Open Table for a window seating, we didn't get one. That made a big impact on my experience. I felt that my request had been blithely ignored, when it would have been easy enough to honor. It's not like the place was filled."

  • "Food was fair, overly salted, under cooked. The waitress laid down cutlery with her hand touching part of the fork diners would be touching their food with. Fair experience, would not re-visit."

  • "This place takes simple good ingredients and makes outstanding flavor combinations with them. The menu changes from time to time so there's always new things to try. I hope they kept the tomato french toast , I could eat that every day."

  • "Successful innovative cuisine with French roots, using both common and precious/unique local ingredients. Unique combinations that challenge old paradigms gently. Most of our party was French, and they loved the new approach. Charming atmosphere with perfect ambient lighting with candles and reflections. Unpretentious and authentic. I could imagine myself having a wonderful evening dining alone or with company at the bar. One of our favorites."

  • "My wife and I went to Cocotte for the first time on her birthday and we were trepidatious about trying a new place on an important evening. But not to worry, everything at Cocotte from the service to the bread was outstanding. Amity, our server was very helpful with the wine list and menu choices. While some of the tables are a bit communal, there are some that are private enough to sip and converse nicely. I had the duck confit, which was outstanding. It paired nicely with the velvety Bordeaux. We highly recommend Cocotte!"

  • "This was the 2nd time I've been to Cocotte and they did not disappoint. It was a birthday/thanks for a job well done for a few of my staff. We had a wonderful time stepping into the French country side atmosphere and cuisine that is Cocotte. We shared a round of apps and small plates and each had a wonderful entrée. I personally sampled a few of the wine by the glass menu and my companions each had a favorite cocktail or ale so all of our desires were covered."

  • "Cocotte never disappoints. The food is exquisite, perfectly prepared and beautifully presented; the service is excellent, the ambiance comfortable and intimate. I have never had a disappointing dish, which I cannot say of other restaurants at the top of my list."

  • "It could have been a better experience if the waiter knew what he was doing. We asked him what is the restaurant's signature dish and he didn't know as he's new. Some of the appetitizers were very very salty. Check included an item that we inquired but didn't order. Food came out fast. We weren't done with the appetizers and our other orders arrived. We felt rushed! And when we were done, the waiter gave us the check without asking if we wanted desserts or coffee. No, we won't be returning to this place ever again."

  • "My group had a very enjoyable dinner at Cocotte. It is a traditional French Bistro with a northwest accent, and the service was excellent. It is less ambitious than the two other excellent restaurants on this corner, DOC and Beast, but it holds its own, and is a less expensive evening."

  • "We have been to Cocotte several times since they opened. We have yet to be disappointed. While the menu has varied from visit to visit, we have not failed to find multiple entrees to our liking. Servers are always pleasant, courteous and knowledgeable. One of PDX's truly fine dining experiences."

  • "We had a five-course prix fixe and accompanying wine. Everything was "fine", nothing stood out. Best parts of the meal were the chervil sprouts on top of the first course and the candied kumquats with the duck (not the duck itself). I'm sorry to say that everything else, including the wine, was completely forgettable."

  • "I've been a faithful Cocotte customer and I have always been very pleased with the cuisine and service. My opinion on this hasn't changed. I'll definitely be back. BUT, the V-day dinner was a bit...off. I believe the food was expertly prepared, but the choices were strange. It lacked any of the signature heartiness and warmth of Cocotte fare. In fact, I would characterize it as the opposite. (No one wants to come in from the cold and dig into a chilled, spongy blob.) More than that, it seemed to lack any real "centerpiece." A seven-course meal should take you on a journey from start to finish, rather than beginning seven times. For the price ($75/person), I have to say I left feeling frustrated. Take it for what it's worth."

  • "Cocotte does every preparation well. That said - while the pre fixe was very good I sure wish great restaurants such as Cocotte would stop with these set menus. Yes it allows them to seat more customers but many of us who are dedicated to their favorite restaurants - and Cocotte is mine - think it would be more romantic to be able to order off the regular menu. You get what you are craving and not surprised by a morsel of something you may never order unless it is prescribed by a fixed menu. That said I did enjoy my meal on February 15th - my wife - not so much - she was looking forward to the house special."
