I dine monthly with a group of gentleman and last Thursday we went to Cocotte. What a lovely experience! All of the food was delicious but of particular note was the escargot. The little beasts were in a green pistol sauce along with fennel, green lentils, a bit of eggplant and a sprinkling of breadcrumbs. Amazing. We all wanted to bring the plates to our face and lick them clean but, alas, maturity kicked in and we settled for scraping our bowls with our spoons, tearing up briefly as the bowls were collected and taken away. My only issue with the place is that it is intimate and because of that, the audible energy was high. Being a "mature American" with dodgy hearing, soft conversation was difficult. But that is true of many Portland restaurants and I can hardly blame a working restaurant with food this delicious for being at capacity. I would go again tomorrow night were the fates kind enough to provide me with the opportunity. Did I enjoy myself? I did.

I thought everything about the place was awesome, aside from where they sat us. This isn't a complaint, and I know they are busy, but we were sat in the back behind the kitchen...Great place for larger groups, not so much for parties of two. The lights were bright, and the music was louder (Seemed like there was a birthday party taking up most of the space. Im sure it was perfect for them). All this being said, the food was amazing, service was great, and it was very reasonably priced. I would definitely eat there again...as long and I was in the main dining room.

  • For all the hype, not that great
    OpenTable Diner Since 2014
    Dined on 11/9/2014
The front dining room might have been nicer, but we were seated in the back "new" dining room (even with reservations) and we weren't impressed. As soon as we walked back there, there was a pretty strong smell of cats...even worse, cat litter. The room was also cold and drafty. They had a space heater going but it wasn't doing a good job of keeping the room warm...most of us ate with our coats on. For all they hype that we've heard about it (and the prices), one would expect the wait staff to be very attentive and knowledgeable - they weren't either. We had one waitress to start with but her shift ended so someone else took over. This transition can be done without disruption, but not in this case. The food was ok...but again, not what I would expect for the prices. Overall, not a great experience which was too bad because we were entertaining our family from Manhattan and they had read and heard great things about the restaurant so they were disappointed as well.

Cocotte is warm, welcoming, full of European charm and some city history. We were looking for something new and my husband remembered the name, Cocette. Turned out to be near our motel. We were blown away from the very start. Everything was meticulously prepared and delicious! The seafood bourride was perfectly cooked and seasoned. I had the cod over potato pave with swirls of puréed vegetables. The flavors were spectacular. Will surely be back for more even though we live 300 miles away.

Looking at the menu, my mouth watered, but after tasting the food, it was nothing special. My companion had the salmon which was woefully undercooked for him. They did not ask how he would like it. I ordered the signature dish of Chicken en Cocette which was just ok, nothing special. The atmosphere was somewhat noisy and cold - not a very warm and friendly environment and our waitress was not very friendly either. The service was not that good (our waitress disappeared and I had to ask for the check) and the food was not worth the money. The oysters wre good though.

I would highly recommend dining at Cocette. Their 1/2 roast chicken is probably the best chicken dish I have ever tasted at a restaurant - and don't we all avoid chicken since we cook it at home? Great neighborhood french bistro - but no steak frites if you were expecting that French staple.

We have eaten at Cocotte several times previously and enjoyed it. Our last dining experience there was somewhat less satisfactory. Sometimes, a lot of intangible and tangible factors combine to subtract from an experience. Eating at Cocotte exemplified that. I felt the service desultory and distracted, the food marginal, and the nose level a detriment to conversation. Because Cocotte is fairly expensive, I would expect food, service, and ambiance to to be more commensurate with the final bill. It was not. Like so many Portland restaurants, perhaps Cocotte is coasting on its laudatory past without noticing that it's losing speed and beginning to wobble a bit.

Cocotte was all we hoped for and a little more. Excellent food and a good value. The bar menu covers a good range of options. The bruschetta and chicken liver mousse we very tasty. I had the signature dish chicken, and it was as good as chicken gets. The burger was exceptional. Good wines by the glass. Put this on your not to be missed list. Good service. Loved the housemade liver pate. Mushroom risotto was good. Grilled endives tasted mostly of char, plus a bit of chopped sardine, and we only ate 2 out of 3. The house specialty, poulet de cocotte, was a bit too dry and not worth $25. The farro that came with the chicken was ok. For drinks, we ordered a red by-the-glass and an old-fashioned; both were priced on the high end and neither were stellar. We put a note on the reservation that it was for a 40th birthday celebration and asked for a good table, but I think they didn't see that.... our table was at the end of the dining area close to the walk-way for servers. Not a terrible table but almost any table would have been better. We did get seated right away.

We attended Cocotte with a group of five for my boyfriend's birthday. The staff and owners were incredibly helpful with menu and drink decisions, and the food was AMAZING! Our group ordered many of the small dishes such as the escargot, kale salad, chicken liver mousse, salmon mousse, and grilled delicata squash. We also split a few of the larger plates (the cod and crepinette "burger") which equally were satisfying. Our group's sweet tooth was then met with pretty much everything on the dessert menu. To say the least, we left Cocotte with smiles on our faces and full bellies.

My wife and I went to Cocotte for our recent anniversary and had a wonderful meal with excellent service. The waiter was knowledgable and helped guide us to delicious wine pairings (even poured a few to taste first). He didn't rush us but was always there filling up water glasses or taking dishes away. The atmosphere was lively, but it's a small enough place that it never got loud. The tables are are little snuggly packed, but the food itself was amazing. Very interesting, and completely delicious. The chicken over risotto and poached egg was particularly enjoyable, as was the bar drink menu ("The Last Word" and "Daiquiri"--yum!). I sort of wish we'd stayed for dessert, but we ended up Lauretta Jean's for some amazing pie.
