It was well worth the later reservation - the food was excellent, atmosphere was very energetic, and the service was great. I was very pleased with my Sea Bass and the wine list was great!"

  • "it was a beautiful warm san francisco evening so sitting near the front, which is completely open to the street, added to the comfortable feeling. everything was delicious... but the hors d' oeuvre's were killer. i'd come back and sit at the bar just to have the cantal cheese churros (amazing) and the butter lettuce salad. toss in a banana creme brûlée and call it a night!"

  • "We liked the food and overall ambiance here, but the service is just as bad, if not worse, than many of the poor reviews say it is. After we were seated, it took 20 minutes for our waiter to even stop by our table, and the rest of the evening it was nearly impossible to get his attention to ask for more water, another glass of wine, or the check. The only time he took any interest in us was when he asked us to move to another table to accommodate a larger party. At that point he promised a free glass of champagne that never materialized. The only redeeming part of the evening was that the food was good and reasonably priced, but that's easy to find in SF, so I doubt we'll be going back."

  • "Very cute, cozy French restaurant. The service was fantastic and the atmosphere was very nice. The kitchen is open, and although that added a nice touch to the ambiance because the restaurant is so small it made everything very loud. We often had to shout and repeat ourselves to be heard over the noisy kitchen and so many people packed into a small restaurant. I started with the tomato heirloom salad, which was really good. The coq au vin was fantastic... Very flavorful and well cooked. Beef Wellington was one of the best I've had, although a tad dry. The banana creme brûlée is a MUST HAVE. The flavors and textures were spot on. The perfect way to end a great meal. We will certainly be back!"

  • "We selected this place to celebrate the engagement day of my great nephew. The following was our evening: 1- although informed when booking, the restaurant did not even say congratulations (much less offer anything), 2- food came we had not ordered, 3- dishes were tepid and had to be rewarmed, 4- one of us was served the chicken 10 minutes after everyone else- no explanation, no apology, 5- the duck confit entree was so tough it was inedible, and finally, 6- we were charged for the duck confit, never asked if we wanted something else, told that the problem was we did not have a sharp enough knife, and, to top it off- the waiter threatened to quit his job if the duck confit was removed from the bill! He is still employed because it wasn't."

  • "We brought some out of towners here for dinner and had an amazing time. Everyone got the half chicken and their own cocotte and as usual it was delicious. The seasonal squash ratatouille cocotte was better than any others I've tried (potato gratin, cauliflower gratin, fries, peas & carrots with pesto, etc). I would go back just to order that. Anyway the table loved the wine we ordered and the service was great - cozy, homey, and just really great food"

  • "We went there for my wife's B-day. Arrived early and they seated us immediately. I had put in the open table that it was my wife's B-day and would like a table that was against the wall and relatively secluded. Well, they gave us the lovers closet that has been converted into a intimate little dining nook. Best chairs, lovely lamp and curtains drawn back. The best seats in the place. Food was out of this world. All wait staff was fun and friendly. They wished my wife Happy B-day as soon as I came in and gave my name. Had a great time. Music was a bit loud but makes it intimate for conversation, since no one can hear what you are saying except who you are dining with. Parking could be tough. Got a spot right in front though, very lucky. Go!"

  • "They gave me a special table just as I had asked. It was very pleasant and the maître d' as well as waiters took time and were attentive. The food was good. The crème brûlée at the end however was not kept in the oven long enough to warm so itg came quite cool. A modest oversight. I would go back again many times"

  • "Great roasted chicken and spices. Side dishes wonderful hot and tasty.....service fair but food is so good it doesn't matter. Waiter was a winemaker selling his wine to the table next to us...kind of distracting as his voice was rather loud. He sold his wine to them , a case, on the side...we were waiting for the candy and flower people to try to,sell us something. The restaurant is so good they need to tell this guy to either tone it down, or market his personal wine elsewhere."

  • "After all of the great reviews, we were really looking forward to dining here. While the space reminded us of restaurants we have enjoyed in France, we were really disappointed with the food, which was nothing like what we've enjoyed in France. Nothing was awful but nothing stood out either. We began with the pardon peppers and the soup. The peppers were fine but the soup was salty. The duck confit was just ok. We also tried a couple of the cocottes and both were under seasoned and just ok."

  • "I liked this place, but with all the outstanding choices in SF, I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to return. It has a good, fairly priced selection of French wine. The cocotte side dishes are all good (and rather rich), but you can't really have just cocottes as a meal, they are not meant to be "small plates". The main courses were good but a little pricey. If you like beef wellington, try this one. They sous vide their beef wellington before putting the crust on it, so it looks VERY pink, but is cooked."

  • "We were early for our reservation and had a glass of wine at the bar. Our seating was a delayed but I can't blame them. Our table was so cozy, I didn't want to leave either! We got a table for 2 tucked in a secluded corner that had a velvet curtain we could draw for extra privacy. Once we were seated, we may have been forgotten about. We weren't approached for about 15-20 minutes but we had our drinks from the bar and our cozy nook so we were fine with that. The roasted chicken was crispy skinned, yet juicy and succulent. The eggplant and squash ragout was savory and comforting. The peas and carrot cocotte was divine! Loved every bite. The wine selection was lovely too. Unfortunately we were too full for dessert. We'll definitely be back!"

  • "We skipped the starters and went straight to entrees- rotisserie chicken and the butcher's cut, which was a bavette steak. For cocottes, we went with English peas and carrots, cauliflower gratin, and frites. Everything was delicious, and we finished with a tart tatine that was heavy on the apples and light on pastry served with creme fraiche."

  • "A very nice restaurant that is cherished by the Russian Hill neighborhood. Some traditional French dishes (Coq au Vin, Escargot) but also a sense of adventure in others. We had a wonderful "wild" mushroom soup, an asparagus salad with pork belly, Salmon with summer squash and a Fettucine with Rabbit & Mustard Ragu....all dishes done excellantly. Our waiter/host Yuri was great as was all his staff. Our reserved table was available to us as soon as we walked in. Parking can be difficult on Russian Hill so plan accordingly or be prepared to park 1.5 blocks away at the Jug Shop @ Polk & Pacific."

  • "This place is a heartbreaker. So close to a 'go-to' spot but not there. The ambience (smart venue, limited light with candles, gypsy kings grooving in the background) had my wife boogieing throughout the meal. I had to coq au vin, which was delightful but the cut was weird with lots of bones. My wife had beef wellington which was a disappointment. The meat was tough (not tenderloin) with minimal flavor and duxelles in the wrap. Portions were small but adequate. The wait staff was friendly. The menu is small which fits the size of the restaurant. My suggestion is to keep the coq au vin but adjust the cut of the chicken in a more conventional style, drop the beef wellington in favor of something like steak dianne. Focus on flavor and sauces."

  • "I was really disappointed with cocotte. We had friends in town so wanted a place to show off how good the food is in the City. Instead we got uncooked/greasy beignets twice - took it back once and ate the bad beignets anyway , rabbit tagliatelle that had no rabbit and chocolate molten cake that wasn't molten and tasted like the fridge. Our friends peach dessert also tasted old. When we got the bill, they didn't take off the uncooked beignets and charged us an extra dessert. Service was forgetful as well. Maybe not a good place for Sunday night."

  • "Dining at Cocotte feels like taking a trip to a small neighborhood bistro in Paris. We chose from the fixed price menu for the early June Dine About Town event. The appetizers, entrees and desserts were all very good although my dining companion thought the pork shank was a bit too salty. I like that the menu is not simply the classic and predictable bistro fare, but more imaginative and varied. The service overall was very good except we waited a very long time between the appetizer and the entree which was not a problem for us, but could be for someone else. I plan on dining there again."

  • "Well, it is noisy, there is no doubt about it, with a lot of the noise coming from the open kitchen. And for some reason, they play loud music with a beat, too. And the service is perfunctory. And the wine is pricey. But, still the food is good, and the prices are reasonable. The lobster salad was excellent, as was the cauliflower soup, but the rabbit pappardelle did not reach the same standard. Despite its drawbacks, I still might go back."

  • "We went during Dine About Town. They know how to do DAT right! They had great selections on the Prix Fixe menu. Unlike some places that just don't get the concept and put their cheapest items on there, which is often not very good. The idea is to make you want to return. Cocotte did it right. The food was great, the atmosphere was cozy and the service was excellent. We'll be back."

  • "We live in the area and thought we'd give the restaurant a try with the Dine About Town. The host was super nice and friendly but our waiter was also the bartender and you could tell that he wanted to push the wine and catered to the bar more than the sit down customers. The food also wasn't spectacular. The clams were good but the duck confit was very dry. The banana creme brûlée was not bad but is served cold, yet took 15 min to be served. My husband had the salmon which was plain, nothing special and his pork belly appetizer was weird. He got the apple tart which was extremely sweet who drenched in syrup. It was super loud and noisy in the small restaurant, you have to yell. We both agree that we won't be coming back here."

  • "The host was very courteous and attentive, the server just took the drink order and food order, he came back with the drinks forgot to bring ice so I had to asked the busser to get it for me and more water then the server never came back to our table to check how we were doing, dessert came the server brought the silverware and at the end I asked for change and He said they did not have any change. Bad service."

Food was good but the duck tasted like it was previously cooked then warmed up before it was presented. The unfortunate aspect was the noise level was close to unbearable. Maybe that's the price of success. Might ditch the rock music and use Edith Piaf, Michelle Legrand, Chevalier, Montand, et.al."

  • "I came after I've been waiting all week to eat their beef Wellington. I had to ask for water and bread when everyone else got theirs automatically. I was surprising my girlfriend with this meal and just pointed out to the waiter that I wanted and I told him "I'm ordering for her tonight that's why we only have one menu". He smiled and told us what we order. ( no surprise beef Wellington for her). We had the duck platter 10 out of 10. Lobster salat 1-10 (ice cold) They forgot my beef, didnt tell btw reheated my sides in the microwave, finally 15 min later I got my beef and NO MUSHROOMS, beef Wellington is meat and mushrooms. So I gave up on this place "

  • "The roast chicken is moist and flavorful. It is never overcooked. This restaurant is very busy. Their is a problem with too many selfish people lingering and chatting away while those with reservations wait to be seated. To Cocotte's credit, they do not rush diners out, nor should they. I hope that a bit of situational awareness can set in and diners will finish and leave. Let's have a little more lass, shall we?"

  • "The food was great, but the service left something to be desired. The servers only pay attention to your table if you order at least two bottles of wine. It took close to 30 minutes to get anyone's attention to get the check while the only thing on our table was water. They never offered to grab us another glass of wine or even bring us a dessert menu. I would have stayed and ordered more food/drinks because the food was great, but I was worried that our dinner would have taken us over 3 hours if we asked for anything more. Really disappointed in the restaurant especially because I live so close to it and would have come back for seconds. I sadly don't think I will go back there :("

  • "We live close by and love this restaurant for a quick and easy date night. Its small but cozy. It can get a little cramped but a good atmosphere. The roast chicken is always delicious and they have wonderful sides (cocottes). We've also tried the pork belly entree which was delicious and the butcher's cut steak. The service is friendly and overall a very great dining experience."
