A word from COCO5OO
Loretta Keller's new south of market hotspot brings in the crowds to enjoy its warm, modern vibe and bold, stimulating flavors. Italian glass tile, Douglass fir, chocolate tones and rich teak finishes set the mood in this 1906 wood structure that anchored the corner of Fourth and Brannan as Bizou since 1993. The restaurant's commitment to high quality, small production ingredients begins in the kitchen, extends through the wine list, and forms the foundation of the new-fashioned bar. Cocktails at COCO5OO are handcrafted utilizing organic ingredients - fresh squeezed juices and premium, small production spirits.

Diner Reviews
  • "COCO 500 has an eclectic menu which accommodates a variety of food tastes. Pizza for kids, veggies for Vegetarians and meat for the carnivore. The atmosphere is casual an friendly. The service efficient and unobtrusive. I will recommend COCO 500 and we will return."

  • "Coco500 is reliably great for artisan cocktails, a great by-the-glass wine list, the bar snacks are perfect (deep fried green beans!) and lunch is solid."

  • "Coco500 is my favorite lunch or after-work drink spot. Get there early, before the noise level becomes distracting. Great food, great cocktails, great service."

  • "COCO500 has it all -- excellent food, friendly professional service, attractive contemporary decor. We really enjoyed our dinner and will be back soon!"

  • "We had two of the flatbreads as appetizers, which were both perfect. I had the whole fish special and it was almost perfect - really fresh-tasting and flavorful. My friends had the steak (cooked to a perfect medium-rare), the beef cheeks (good, but not mind-blowing), and the vegetarian entree. Drinks and cocktails are right on the high-normal range for the city ($10-15/drink) and the ones we had were all good."

  • "The staff was exceptional. Two people in our party fell just before we entered the restaurant and the staff could not do enough for us; bringing ice and bandages. Their concern was very much appreciated. The meal was also delicious."

  • "Simple, delishous, non pretentious. A great restaurant for chefs to eat at. Solid. Left satisfied and that's saying a lot."

  • "As I had been to Coco500 only once 5+ years ago I found the food to be better than expected. The menu is pleasingly varied with unique offerings, such as the deep fried green beans which were al dente but with a wonderful crispy dredging and fry. We also had the asparagus soup, the duck liver crostini, the pear and red pepper pizza, albacore and capellini, gingerbread and sorbets/gelato with cookies. The Grenache blend was just ok, but certainly the right not too intense body. There was a long wait between the green beans and next course. Service was helpful and engaging."

  • "I had a great lunch while entertaining a client who was in town for the day. The decor was tasteful and the service was great. A nice selection of options for lunch that lent itself to many discussions. I will definitely come back soon!"

  • "Great food, wonderful service, delicious cocktails (and mocktails) and an intimate setting. Couldn't ask for anything more! Definitely get the tuna-stuffed piquillo peppers!"

  • "I truly don't know how to write about a restaurant that is so on point. It is my favorite restaurant in the city, from the ambiance, to the amazingly created dishes, to the diligent and knowledgeable staff. I have loved Loretta Keller's dishes since this was Bizou, and she just keeps getting better. It is always a joy to go to COCO."

  • "This trip, the food was fantastic as usual. And, I am very happy to see the beans back as a permanent app. The service was even friendlier than usual -- the hostess kept me entertained while I waited for my colleague to join for lunch. Coco has become my favorite spot for work-related lunches in the SOMA area."

  • "The vegetables were particularly wonderful. We ordered three."

  • "Good choices of food and not too noisy. The wine list is good too. Everything is just good and make it a great place for a nice weekday sit down dinner to chat with your friend. The staff are maybe too nice, they drop by one too many time though."

  • "Coco500 used to be one of my favorites but it's started to decline. I'd still recommend it as a place that is near the Caltrain but alas, both the service and the food just aren't what it used to be a few years ago. For instance, we ordered the olive oil (comes with bread), but the bread was sitting on the plate with the olive oil. In other words, it was already quite oily before we even picked it up, making for oily hands. Most places I've been to put the bread on a separate plate or basket. We also felt rather rushed with the ordering, and just not particularly welcomed. The green beans are still amazing though."

  • "Perfect place as my counterpart was coming up from the South Bay. Great food. I had the Duck Confit, but my friend had the ham and gruyere sandwich... wish I had had that one!"

  • "I wish some of the entrees had a better description or that our waiter had been better at description. He didn't ask if I wanted more wine or a coffee refill either. Food was uneven..it was more like 2.5 stars, not 3. My entree was really tasty. My husband said his was not as flavorful as he would have liked. As to the noise level, it is more than energetic. Really loud. It wasn't overly crowded, but they seemed short one staff person. The bus man was really on top of it, more so than the overworked waiter."

  • "We were very pleasantly surprised by the quality and creativity of the dishes served on this visit. The 'special' octopus salad was amazing, and so was the brussel sprout leaves salad. Main courses were also great. We heard from the server that the owner-chef was in the kitchen this night, and we certainly benefited from her presence."

  • "Coco500 is great place to be to meet for dinner with friends or colleagues or if you need to connect with someone from the East Bay (since it's right off the 80). The staff is outstanding - very professional and accommodating. The food is consistent and delicious...hip to the season and always hits the mark. I love the wine selections, eclectic and thoughtful, and pairs very well with the menu. This is always a good choice for ambiance and an overall great example of perfect San Francisco dining!"

  • "Coco500 is a great neighborhood restaurant. The food is prepared well and the service on point."

  • "I used to live in the neighborhood, and remembered that people always had great things to say about COCO500. Unfortunately, I went on an off night or the food had declined since I last heard those reviews. The service was great, which almost made up for it."

  • "This place is noisy but the food was delicious. The branzino was perfectly cooked and the spicing was exquisite. We always enjoy going back to this great neighborhood restaurant. Erena and Bernard Gordon"

  • "Been coming here since it was Bizou, but this could end that streak. Server took a long, long time to greet us, manager had to bring us drinks. Food arrived like it was all prepped and ready to serve. Cold, cold, cold, heat lamp must not have been working. Hard to tell quality of food since we barely touched it (needed to get it home to zap so it would be room temp). Outta there in 1/2 hr. This is not typical of my past experience but will be a while before I go back."

  • "Took a small group of 5 for lunch; as usual everything that came to the table was thoughtful, plentiful and perfectly seasoned and dressed. Going to the restaurant is like a small welcome adventure, as some of the spices used are a gastronomic (but pleasant) surprise."

  • "coco500 never disappoints. On New Year's Eve, the special prix-fixe was worthy of a Hayes Valley or Theater District venue. I had caviar, fresh crab pasta, and the most perfect duck breast of my life. Chef Loretta Keller is back in the kitchen, and it's like a Bizou Renaissance. General Manager Clay Reynolds paired the wines from an eclectic list that never fails to deliver more value for the money than many pricier lists. The front-of-the-house staff constantly eyeballs every table, looking for any guest who needs anything -- more water, a dropped napkin, or the next course. But I still love it for lunch and week nights, too -- casual food taken to new heights of imagination and excellent ingredients."

  • "The hostess was snooty and lacked informing me that there was a prefixed menu before I made the reservation. The food was ok, small portions that were not worth the price. And my girlfriends and I were treated like deconstruct class citizens. I would have rather spent my money at a burger joint."

  • "The food was great and the service was wonderful. But it is noisy and we were cold as we were seated near the door. We still had a wonderful time and would return but I would specifically ask for a different table away from the bar and the door. I loved the beef cheeks. My husband loved his branzino. My daughter loved her steak. They were also very good about getting us out of the restaurant in time to make our show and I appreciated that."

  • "We had dinner with friends here on a recent Friday night. No problem getting a reservation about a week ahead for a party of 6. Table was ready immediately upon arrival. Service was attentive but not overly so. Nice wine list. Unanimous consensus among our party that their dinners were terrific. We had the green bean appetizer to start for the table - so simple but uniquely prepared and so tasty! Among the six of us, we sampled the soup, many of the appetizers, the brussel sprout leaf salad (probably the best salad I've ever eaten) and the swordfish and daily fish special (a whole cooked branzino). Prices are not cheap but you definitely get what you pay for and more! Highly recommend."

  • "We came here after Cirque du Soleil and the experience was on par with the show. The tuna stuffed peppers and the swordfish was great. We shared a delicious dessert, I forgot its name, espresso poured over ice cream."
    Dined on 12/21/2013
  • "The food was good and the prices were reasonable but he wine prices were outrageously marked up. A Sauvignon Blanc was $125 and the cheapest wine on their list was $55! I guess Michael Bauer was right about the restaurant in San Francisco marking up their wines at such a high percentage. Pretty sad to know that the wines you get a bottle for less than $15."

  • "The host was too busy to acknowledge us to check us in for our reservation. He was chit-chatting with diners while the rest of the wait staff were busy trying to provide adequate service to the patrons. Host seemed very 'concerned' about a group of young Asian American patrons coming to the restaurant and giving patronage to their bar area.... very disturbing behavior as he questioned these customers in a very disrespectful manner. There were other patrons that came into the restaurant around the same time and they got the 'red carpet' treatment. Based on the overall experience we had, I would never go back to the restaurant nor would I ever recommend it."

  • "Although we were almost an hour late for our reservation because of traffic, the staff was very friendly and efficient. The food was wonderful and we had a very enjoyable time."

  • "I had the house specialty, Beef cheek, it was terrible. some friends had the duck lasagne and really liked it, the steak was good, the flat bread was good the martinis were great. I might go back but would choose a different meal"

  • "I ate here on a Monday with two colleagues I wanted to catch up with, and this was the perfect choice. Easy location from the peninsula, cute little place, and service was professional and unrushed, food was excellent. We started with the green beans (yummy, if greasy) and my colleagues each had the burger (which they liked) while I had the veggie lasagna (yum). Would definitely come again."

  • "The atmosphere is nice, it is a small restaurant with a romantic feeling. The food for the most part was good, our flatbread was a little cold, and the ceviche was pretty bland. The duck lasagna and the brussel sprouts were excellent! The service was great, we had a show to catch so were constrained by time, the waiter asked what time we needed to be out by and made sure we had plenty of time to eat all of our dishes. When we started cutting the timing close at the end he reminded us of the time. Overall a good experience and a convenient location to AT&T park."
