  • "when we arrived, the room was lit dimly, which made for a nice vibe. we ordered, and when the burrata arrived with a lovely array of tomatoes, and the shaved vegetable salad was placed next to it, we marveled at the wonderful selection of colors on the two plates. but not for long - in less than a minute, someone dimmed the lights even further, and those gorgeous colors disappeared and became murky grays and browns. all for a little mood lighting, but this was over the top - and we noticed that nearly every other table was using an iPhone light to read the menu. "we eat first with our eyes," as the saying goes - don't be afraid to let us see your wonderful plating."

  • "My wife and I had a fantastic first experience at Cocello. Our waiter was superb, the food was exceptional and I would say we were given the best seat in the house. We brought a bottle of wine we had been holding onto to celebrate a new job and instead of being charged a corkage fee we were asked to share a glass with another diner. What a great concept. We will definitely be back."

  • "I gather that Cocello had been open a few months when we dined there. Cocktails: interesting and excellent. Our server was enthusiastic, but seemed to have too many tables, and thus, was slow on the uptake on bringing drinks. Main course came too quickly after appetizers. There were other signs that the place needs to simmer down and get organized. Salads, particularly heirloom tomatoes and burrata were very good. Main courses: tagliatelle undercooked (way beyond al dente) and same could be said for the lobster risotto. Flavors were good but could not make up for those cooking errors. The music was also too loud for our table, but after several requests, the server did get it turned down for us. This place needs a bit more seasoning."

We had the roman style artichokes (fried, but flavors that burst on your palate), roasted chicken (amazing-moist, flavorful - beats out the best chicken I've had - Zuni's in San Fran), and linguine with clams. The pasta was still good, but a so-so dish. Broccoli was fabulous - so flavorful! Great wines, affordable and not seen on many lists. Our server made wonderful recommendations and was attentive and knowledgeable. Love that they ask if you WANT bread. And theirs is really great. Would like the tablecloths returned. Changed the atmosphere and not necessarily for the better. But we will be back for the food - probably at the bar as we're not sold on the atmosphere at the tables."

  • "Finally a great restaurant opens here where so many others just didn't make it. Owned by same group as Guilt Bar and Babette's, etc. The menu is perfect offering just the right amount of selections and the food is delicious with incredible favors. The plates are perfect size for sharing, which I love to do. Great wine. Staff very attentive and didn't mind we sat outside from 6:30 to midnight. Will return as often as I can as I live next door!! I dined here once prior, sat at the bar, and enjoyed everything just as much. Met Chef Cameron for this restaurant group and it was exciting to hear his approach to foods, favors, and pairings. Plus you could see how much respect the employees have for him."

  • "Too dark - decreased lighting at about 7:30.. One little candle on the table; hard to read menue Too noisy. We were near a speaker and I asked if the volume could be turned down. Didn't happend Pasta tasted very good, but was so al dente Too Too. Not even in Italy did I taste pasta this hard. Not going back"

  • "I've always been a fan of the HogSalt group, and Cocello was no exception in the groups ongoing list of restaurants. The Italian fair was well thought out, the drinks were large, and the portions were manageable. When I was called to confirm the reservation a few days prior to the meal, I was asked if this was a "special occasion" which it was, and, our party of four was comped both a round of Prosecco (when seated), as well as a pasta dish. The wait staff was friendly, honest, and attentive. I would go back in a heartbeat and highly recommend this place for anyone who doesn't have children."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner here very much. Had both the octopus starter (Arrosto di polpo) as well as the chili Roman-style artichoke were fabulous. My fish of the day was salmon and it was the best salmon I've had in a very long time. The other 3 ordered pasta dishes, and they loved them. Pasts dishes are quite large, so can definitely be a main."

  • "Came Saturday for late dinner with friends. Our party was -1 vs. reserved and the restaurant was nice about the change (although there were tons of empty tables, so no reason for them not to be nice). The cocktails - esp the 'light' ones - were really tasty. The food was also good, and portions were generous. The polenta appetizer was amazing! We tried 4 pasta dishes and all were great. One friend has a parmesan allergy... Beware: seemed like virtually every dish is covered in cheese! More so than other Italian restaurants. Only real downer was the service. Generally slow, and the waiter was pretty rude when we ordered fewer dishes than suggested (and we still had leftovers!). I'd try again, but hopefully with a different waiter."

  • "Wonderful setting for satisfying food for all appetites. We enjoyed the many choices, portion sizes, good wine list, attentive but not hovering service. The Little Gems salad is terrific, as are the pastas and lighter entrees.with a dieter and a vegetarian I hour group, all were satisfied as were the traditions I eaters! Can't wait to return."

  • "I made a reservation for two and added a note that I would prefer to have an outdoor seat. As soon as we got there we were greeted very kindly and led right to our seats. We were given a very good amount of time to look over the menu and our waiter made excellent suggestions. He actually was a great part of my experience there. Very cool and collected as well as very knowledgeable. The only reservation I have about the experience was the small portion of what we ordered, especially for the price. It was absolutely delicious, but just a bit small. The bread was tasty, soft and warm - always a plus!! Oh, and the nice design on my flavorful latte was the cherry on top."

  • "This is the third restaurant at this location and I have eaten here three times (twice outside and once inside) This place has a chance...but...service must improve, attitude must improve, food must get better (sometimes it came warm at best, overcooked pasta another, too long between portions), the wine list should be expanded for a few more reasonably priced bottles. The outside dining is the best for conversation, but they need to tone done the "vibrancy" a bit inside so that you can have a reasonable conversation."

  • "I went to Cocello this past weekend with my boyfriend, having never been before. The ambiance was impressive and noticed how nice the decor was (very similar to Maude's, Bavette's). We were seated just past the bar in the small room with the fireplace. We were immediately greeted by John, by far a stellar server. He was very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, passionate about the menu and friendly. His service was outstanding. The food was just as good - we ordered quite a few items but those that stood out the most were the polenta frittata, pork belly and the egg yolk ravioli. The one thing we did discuss was the wine list was a little pricey. Would have been nice to see some lower priced bottles but the House Red was delish! We will be back!"

It doesn't help that he kept referring to our group as "girls".. Seriously, we are all adults here. I would go back but would run for dear life if I got the same Server."

  • "While I've been here once before, I still did some research as to what to order, as I made the reservation for 4 ppl. The last time I was here, my friend ordered the kale & sausage pasta while I ordered yellowtail crudo. I was infatuated with her dish and disappointed by the portion size of mine so I mentioned it to the server this time around and she said they increased the portion size and they did. It was delicious!!! According to the review that I read, it was wise to stick with the homemade pasta dishes, as they are outstanding, so that's what we did. We ordered multiples of the kale & sausage pasta, the ravioli, the clams linguine, yellowtail crudo, & ????...but don't forget to order the olive oil cake & an affegato!"

  • "The place has a very small limited menu. Too many dishes are spicy and some dishes came spicy without any mention of it. The service was bad. We had to ask for bread which we got after everyone finished their drinks. I can't see this place lasting here very long. Very disappointed!!!"

  • "Chef Sodikoff has come up with another sure-fire winner with Cocello. Creative pastas dominate a wonderful Italian menu. Terrific desserts, a good (though not great) wine list and tremendous service (our server knew the menu inside and out). The decor remains too dark (especially with the defunct Dillman's windows blocked by newly installed walls -- but that doesn't dim the fun and the depth of a wonderfully thought-through menu."

  • "Our experience at Cocello was second to none. Because of the construction cropping up, it took me 45 minutes to get from my loop office to Cocello. Needless to say I was late for my reservation, my guest had already arrived. The hostess was gracious and still sat my guest AND, when I called to make sure my being late would not affect our ability to get a table, then took her a complimentary glass of Prosecco! When I arrived, I was greeted by the same wonderful hostess (I asked her name, but it escapes now!) and she escorted me to our table and our wonderful, knowledgeable and attentive server came to my rescue by suggesting Prosecco for me, too. From there, everything else was OUTSTANDING! I can't WAIT to return!"

  • "What a great switch this place made from Steve's Deli to Dillmans...both mediocre at best. Now, Cocello is absolutely delightful! Classy, cozy and absolutely delish! They have the trendy items on the menu with a unique and bold flavors. We would highly recommend this place to everyone. We look forward to returning and bringing EVERYONE! Highly recommend the octopus, scallops, raviolo, and polenta fritter. WOW WOW WOW"

  • "The spring veggie starter was wonderful! I could have eaten that for a main course if I had ordered two. The veggies were crisp and on some whipped ricotta with sublte but delicious seasoning. The halibut was worth passing up an extra starter. Crispy on the edges, moist, not overdone. The pasta pomodoro was a starter for my husband but I had to taste it. Fabulous! He had the chicken with fingerling pototoes and he was one happy guy. We splurged and had dessert. I'd never had olive oil cake before but I am going to have it again. Wow was it good. Sounds strange but it will have me coming back. The staff was great and by the time we left we felt like we were regulars."

We loved the drinks, food and delicious lemon custard dessert. Great cozy booths make the atmosphere very warm and great for conversation."

  • "One of the finest meals I have ever had! The hostess was incredible: accommodating, witty! The fried polenta appetizer with the poached egg, spring veggie salad with whipped ricotta, both out of this world! The pasta amatriciana, gnocchi, spaghetti vongole, orchiette were all superb to any place in Chicago! The bread is incredible. The zeppole for dessert with the cherry jam and the olive oil cake, better than my grandmother’s! If I have one criticism: the vodka rocks pour is one of the stingiest I have seen. A $12 1.5oz pour (that the bartender MEASURED) from a $25 25oz bottle of vodka makes your profit on that bottle about $175. Seriously? You never want to tick-off customers with an over-priced, stingy pour. Don't miss Cocello!"

  • "Another great experience at Cocello. Excellent food, service and space is beautiful. It just has a special vibe. All pasta is made in-house, I wish they sold them to cook at home! This time what we did is that we ordered a lot of the items on the menu and then shared them among all of us that were dinning. It worked out pretty well and it gave us the opportunity to try more things on the menu. I recommend doing that! Some of the favorites we had: Beef Carpaccio, Raw Kale, Citrus salad, Broccoli, Pasta Pomodoro, Ricotta Gnocchi, Orecchiette, Roman-style Artichoke, Polenta Fritta, Olive Oil cake and a lemon custard."

  • "This was my first time trying the restaurant - they were very accommodating when I asked for a table outside. Service was great - server was informative and did not rush us. The inside is very cool too...there are large booths that would be perfect for larger groups, and it has a 50's style feel to it. Food was great! All the pastas were delicious - recommend the risotto and gnocci. Donuts for dessert wear scrumptious! Portions are share-able but not huge."

  • "I loved Dillman's and was sad to see it go, but Cochello retains all of Dillman's ambience and swaps in a fresh menu that may have broader appeal. Which was the point. I was unsure if Chicago needed another Italian restaurant but now I know: Chicago needed *this* Italian restaurant. The octopus is perfection. The dressing of the little gem hearts salad was unexpectedly – and delightfully – lemony. The gorgonzola and bacon risotto was delicious and the portion sane. (Can anyone ever eat a typical portion of risotto?) The plateful of ganache for dessert was decadent but my biggest love remains the Scotch and honey steamer. It's a revelation. My dining companion raved about it. It was the thing I most wanted him to try, a Dillman's favorite."

  • " The evening started well with cocktails in the bar however the atmosphere and service changed when we went to the table. Appetisers were slow to arrive and only one arrived for a table of 4 by the time the last appetiser came the gnocchi was burnt and had to be sent back - at this point there was no apology. The mains arrived seconds after the starter was cleared (too fast) and everything was extremely salty, scallops were tiny $21 for 4 and Luke warm. We addressed our concerns firstly with the waitress who told us next time to request less salt (as if it was our issue) and then secondly with the manager who again did not seem bothered Extremely disappointing experience would not recommend and will not be visiting again "

  • "We got to cocello right at our 7pm reservation on a Thursday night, and we had 3 out of 4 persons with. After checking in with the host, she told us to go hang out by the bar as they cannot sit incomplete parties. I asked again, if we could just sit down and order, as the 4th was just coming in for drinks in about 10 min. They said no. The funny thing was that the restaurant was about 40% full. I asked the manager why such a silly policy, he said something about the "flow of restaurant". So we stood there, for 10 min, and once our 4th arrived, they sat us down at a table we were standing next to the entire time!! ... never coming back! keep you "flow" -disappointed"
