A word from Coastal Bistro & Bar
This menu is an exciting combination of dishes from several coastal areas in the West, South, East and Mediterranean areas. Coastal has a beautiful European style chefs table in a semi-private dining area. The patio and outdoor dining area seats about 16 guests, and the “Peninsula Bar” inside is perfect for group gatherings and Happy Hour.
The Coastal Raw Bar features the freshest oysters from the West, East and Gulf coasts served over ice with our housemade sauces and mignonettes. The raw bar also features a JUMBO shrimp cocktail, and cocktail crab claws. Enjoy the Raw Bar items by the piece or in a tasting platter or tower. Whether sampling items from the raw bar, small plates, or dinner menu, Coastal is the perfect place for date night or meeting with friends, and especially nice when combined with Coastal’s unique selection of oyster shots.
Owners Ellen Schmitz and her brother Frank Schmitz are excited to bring the coast to St. Louis with all its culinary excitement.

We have never been disappointed at Coastal. Cocktails are imaginative and menu offers enough to satisfy all and includes some small plates as well as full dinners. Caesar sale dressing was excellent, lobster roll surprisingly good with tender lobster and a nice light lemony dressing (and at a bargain price) and crab cake very good. Specials were interesting. Staff was extremely accommodating, ambiance good, parking better than most Clayton establishments with valet and a parking lot behind the restaurant. Definitely will return.

  • Had a Great Dinner, but...
    Yummers
    Dined on 10/9/2014
Both our main courses were excellent: Salmon and Papardelle with shrimp and scallops. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the fresh tomato sauce for the pasta had the right amount of punch. This is the main event for the dinner, so I am giving a good review. But, the Mista salad was a disappointment - poorly assembled and presented - only worthy of an old-fashioned Italian restaurant that just throws lettuce in bowl with a single wedge of tomato and a sliver of artichoke. I suggest more care in the salad, it is the first impression of the meal that is about to arrive. The Prosecco was tasteless - bland. I was suspicious based on the low price, but a higher quality is warranted. Our waiter was excellent. The owner was friendly.

Tucked into a cozy space on Central, its easy to drive past Coastal. Don't. My first meal was a business lunch, simple chowder and a lobster roll. The lobster roll is the real deal, served chilled with a light mayo dressing, and the chowder is first-rate. Coastal earned a second meal. Dinner exceeded my expectations. We were seated promptly at a central table with a best-of-both-worlds indoor/outdoor feel. Immediately flip the menu over and order a cocktail - the bartender is fantastic. The menu is seafood-dominated but our dining partners ordered the quinoa and the chicken and raved about their meals. Sample the small plates and get as many different tastes as you can! We will definitely repeat.

Coastal Bistro turned out to be a small, intimate restaurant which was a perfect place for a romantic dinner. It's a pleasure to find a place where you can actually talk across a table. And the quality of the food was exceptional. We both had the prix fixe meal - a delicious clam chowder, jambalaya and ice cream. The portions were generous and delicious. We will definitely go there again and bring friends.

Coastal is tucked away so I always forget about it. Plus, my first experience about a year ago was sitting outside at lunch and I was completely under impressed because of the server, so we actually left without eating. Thus most recent time, we went on a Friday night for dinner, sat inside & everything was great. Food, service, wine selection, ambiance- all made for a really great dinning experience. Will definitely be back soon.

The food isn't the best we've had or over the top, but the food that we did have was mostly done right. The salmon was cooked perfectly; it didn't have any fancy sauces or anything, but it was great! The shrimp & grits were also cooked right. The appetizers (clam chowder & fried clams) were good. Our only complaint was that there was a lot of bacon fat in the salad. The restaurant used good, thick bacon (commendable), but they didn't trim any fat, so there were pieces of full on fat (with no meat w/ it) in the salad....a lot of it. It turned us off a bit that we had to pick it out. It's not a fancy food kind of place, but the food is good. We would try another restaurant next time but am not opposed to coming back here.

This was our first time at Coastal and we came away slightly disappointed. The server (Nicole) was a delight and very helpful with good descriptions of the menu items and recommendations. The drinks to a little too long to arrive but the starters came fairly quickly. Something must have happened in the kitchen because our entrees were a long time coming. The food was good but the soft-shell crab dish could use two crabs not one. The serving was tiny for the price. Since the food did not disappoint, I would give it another try.

I've been to Coastal Bistro twice now—once for dinner, once for Mother's Day brunch—on both of which occasions the owner was helping to serve the meals! Impressive. The restaurant theme seems to be Gulf/southern, which they do quite well. Good food, reasonable price, upscale-homey, and excellent service! I'm telling my friends—and going back.

I took my husband there for a nice quiet birthday dinner and we encounter the rudest waitress, Carmen, ever! It truly put a damper on the evening. We enjoyed the food, but will probably never go back because of the service we received. When asking questions about the menu, she was visibly irritated and did everything, but called us stupid, she barely came to the table, and any kind service-oriented phrases fell on dead ears, because she was already walking away irritated as she said it. I didn't want to ruin the evening, so we skipped the birthday dessert, paid, tipped and left. I've never been one to skimp on a tip, but I sure wanted to. Since, I did tip and didn't speak to the manger, I promised myself I would have to write a review.
