Diner Reviews
  • "We had a couple of meals at this restaurant and each meal had multiple mistakes (I.e., brought wrong food/drinks or just missed items) and while the servers were friendly (except the host who was was almost comically surly) they were exceptionally slow. It didn't really matter because we were on vacation with our kids and not in a rush, but service was slow/off enough that it became a running joke to see what odd thing would happen next....we repeatedly had the wrong food/drink served but the highlight was watching the server pour hot coffee into a half-full water glass. The food was fine and the convenience of eating in the hotel where we were staying was certainly a big draw, but for future trips, we will plan on getting out more."

  • "Restaurant is located right on the beach with fantastic views. The dinner was delicious - steak was cooked perfectly! Loved the "coastal living" atmosphere and staff was very friendly - felt right at home."

  • "My friend who was with me told the waiter it was my birthday. I thought he should have acknowledged that someway - like with a complimentary dessert."

  • "This is our favorite place to go to with the kids. Highly recommended if you have little ones."

  • "breakfast was great, service was amazing and the only downside was the coffee - but this was from a coffee snob from Australia - not too much to worry about."

  • "I loved the outside patio, and the ambiance"casual chic". The menu was trendy, the good quality food was well prepared and well presented. The service was unobtrusive and present. We drank tea, from a choice menu. The salmon with asparagus was perfectly cooked, and the mascarpone cheesecake delightful. A keeper for another girlfriend's birthday (my friend did not want the candle on the cake, but I saw it was brought at another table). Loulouand friends"

  • "Always a good choice for lunch at the beach in a relaxing atmosphere. Wait staff always friendly and eager to assure diners enjoy the Coast experience."

  • "The ambiance and food were great. Service was great at times, but a little up and down. (Seemed like it was mostly a matter of mis- or missing communication between staff members, especially since table around us seemed to go quite smoothly.) We had the Valentine's Day special, which was fantastic! It seemed to have items not on the regular menu, which is disappointing since we would love to be able to go back for the amazing lobster salad!! Either way, we'll definitely return to try a few more items on the menu, and hopefully they will all be as good as the specials!"

  • "The food was good and the views of the beach/ocean was great. Very romantic; went there for Valentine's Day dinner. Our server, on the other hand, came around maybe twice. I asked for a drink the second time she came and I never received the drink. However, she was very fast on giving us our check. I would definitely go back and recommend our family and friends go there."

  • "Watch the sun go down over the Pacific from the outside patio, from where you can also watch a never-ending parade of people walking the boardwalk. Great location."

  • "After searching for a kid friendly restaurant in the area we decided on Coast and our experience was excellent. They treated my baby neice and our family with such kindness. The service was attentive and the food was good. The cuisine isn't exactly exotic, fine dining but if you want a good burger, you'll get a good burger. The view was lovely and the atmosphere was relaxed. Highly recommend!"

  • "The food was mostly bland, service not efficient....lovely place, they need interested servers and better cooking, especially being so close to Santa Monica farmer's mkt"

  • "Went 4 DineLA. Coast had a great deal - $25 for a 3-course meal w/only 2 but good choices per course. We sat in their heated enclosed patio which was empty so it was much quieter than the restaurant itself. Very enjoyable, great attentive service - really liked the waitress."

  • "This is one of the best hotel restaurants - casual, bright, but with an extremely good staff, and with great food and wine. It's a treat every time I go there."

  • "We enjoyed their food. They look simple & ordinary but it is almost perfectly cooked! Their short rib was a melt in your mouth! Our salmon & chicken were cooked nicely. The only issue we had was they don't give a printed kid's menu. When we ordered, I asked what is included in the kid's meal. They mentioned fries, fruits & so on. But when the bill came, it was extra charge!"

  • "We were excited to see that Shutters on the Beach was participating in the Dine LA week and made a reservation for 3. Unfortunately when I chose a table through Open Table, the email confirmation was for the Coast Cafe. Well the food was good but the waitress seemed to be having a tough night paying attention to us. Maybe because we chose the Dine LA menu? Or maybe her friend was visiting, but she left us waiting around 15 minutes fir the check. And the servers delivering the food seemed rushed almost dropping each plate in front if us, with a bang. Oh well maybe next time we'll go to Shutters."

  • "The Coast is a very classy place for really any occasions. Great food, high end ambience but still casual enough for anyone to feel comfortable. Really good service and awesome view."

  • "Shutters has been a favorite for the balcony and bar where out-of-town guests can soak up the California sunshine. So choosing to eat here was a no-brainer. Have had meals before at this location when previously called Petals. Service, locale and outdoor dining didn't disappoint. But the DineLA menu seemed sub-par compared to the usual fare offered."

  • "The view/location on the beach is of course excellent. Our group liked the menu & liked our table, and the service generally kept up. Nothing was particularly commendable, but they also didn't mess anything up. The food was good. Also, they accommodated our request for a highchair quickly."

  • "We ate here for Christmas dinner, and the prime rib that was part of the special menu was great. All of the food was good, the only problem was that it was really busy and the wait staff seemed to be overwhelmed. It took a long time to get drinks and to order, and we were still waiting for the wine when the food got to the table. Overall, I would go back and give them another chance because the view was great, and the food was also good."

  • "my family went for christmas dinner and had a delicious meal. the set menu was a good deal and every course was delicious. a couple family members ordered a la carte and really enjoyed there dishes. our server was disinterested in us, but it was christmas eve."

  • "Very disappointed as it all looks gorgeous and is in a fab location, but we had a very rude waiter and really the rest if the staff werent overly friendly either."

  • "Other than the ambivalent service from the waitress, our experience was - as usual - quite good. Coast delivers its promise to provide great food, reasonable prices, at one of Santa Monica's best hotels. The Farmer's Market Wednesday menu is inspired, fresh and consistently changing, while the red velvet cake is the best anyone I know has ever tasted. Despite the service, we'll be back to enjoy Coast, as it is a little bit of beachside magic in our neighborhood."

  • "Coast is better left as a lunch place. It is not appropriate for a nice dinner. We ordered oysters, a family favorite and 3 different waiters including the shucker could not identify the oysters origin and shell. It took forever to get our check and once it arrived our waiter disappeared and we had to ask a busser to run our credit card. Upstair we went to 1 Pico for a better menu and dinner. The food was decent but not exceptional. The lobster pasta had an abundance of lobster and chanterelles but tasteless but the bread was tasty. The desserts were horrendous. Our waiter was patronizing and not knowledgable of the menu. For the price, reputation and experience I found eating at both Coast and 1 Pico a big disappointment."

  • "This fresh, beach-level, restaurant is fun, the food is excellent, the menu varied, and the staff attentive. It's one of my favourite places in Santa Monica for brunch or lunch - I've not been there in the evening. The fish tacos, and linguini vongole, are both outstanding."

  • "love the space, servers often huffy and in manic rush, but the food is consistently good if not great. Wish it was a bit better - but so busy guess they dont need to bother. Either way Im sure we will be back"

  • "After both "I Cugini" and "Il Fornaio" closed, replaced by useless restaurants, Coast came as a surprise. Good food, good place, nice view and... price not too exorbitant. It's the typical case where you get value for your money."

  • "WE always stay at Shutters Hotel when in LA and like Coast so much we once we ate all three meals here in a day. Great for our large family group including kids of all ages, wonderful especially for breakfast and lunch. The stree-level people watching is great, and food is fresh and healthy."

  • "We were seated in the very back corner table and it took over 15 minutes for the waiter to come to take our order. The entire experience was disappointing."

  • "One of my favorite places in the world. I really mean it! Went for a breakfast, and had their amazing lemon pancakes. Now I want to go back again tomorrow for some more!"

  • "I had a business breakfast, booked a table in advance for 4. It was a special meeting with overseas guests. The service was non existent. We had to ask for menus. We had to summon a waiter to get coffee. We got another waiter which we had to flag down to get the order. A different person brought the food. The berries which were ordered with the oatmeal arrived after 90% of the oatmeal was eaten. Bacon was burnt. We had to find a waiter to get a coffee re-fill. All in all, not a good experience yet you charge top rates for your food. You cannot just trade off your location! You need to offer value, service and some Shutters factor if you are to remain aligned with your promise. Time to rethink!"

  • "I met friends visiting from Europe. The location is great and the restaurant pleasant and conducive for conversation. The food was passable but bits of my meal were inedible. Had the special, but the kitchen wasn't paying attention to the preparation. Bits of sausage were so overcooked they were unchewable. Service, while pleasant was slow and sometimes inattentive. It seems with better management and q.a. in the kitchen, they could deliver a great dinning experience."

  • "One of the most beautiful locations and hotels and the worst food. Such a wasted opportunity. The Calamari salad had all of two small supposedly grilled Calamari which tasted fishy, a dozen at most butter beans and old over dressed Arugula. The Tortilla Soup was overly salty an indelible. I find it hard to believe the hotel manager hasn't eaten there and noticed."

  • "I went with my husband and he ordered the lobster roll and I got the chicken salad. My salad was fine, but unforunately, my husbands sandwhich was super bland. It was just a hotdog bun with lobster, mayo and then some flakes of parsley. Our waitress was nice but never asked how the food was. It was as if she knew that after recommending it, that we wouldn't be happy. The fact that it costed $28 and tasted like cafeteria food was a bummer. We are locals and will never go back."

  • "Our experience at Coast was nothing short of disappointing. Positives first...the restaurant is beautiful - nice seating arrangement, windows, ambience, etc. We ordered clams and linguini. The pasta was not what we expected; it was basically inedible. The clams were good, but there were hardly any of them. We asked for more clams as most of the shells were empty. What followed was a basic bait and switch. The original clams were small and tasty... and instead they gave us bigger chewy versions. When I mentioned this the waiter simply stated that they were just bigger versions of what we had. This was blatantly untrue as the clams we had never get big. Lastly, the dish was too oily. And for 21 bucks we expected better."
