  • "Food is very good. As a vegetarian, there were several options. Pea and edamame bruchetta is so fresh and nummy! Service is what they really have to step up. Doesn't seem like they have that part down yet. Cocktails were yummy... salads are delicious... spaghetti was so fresh and very 'farm to table' which is what they are going for! Love them supporting local - Patiserrie Margo does all their bread! Coffee too was tastey and local and free trade!"

  • "We were frequent customers of Biella - the restaurant that was in this location prior to the new Coalition. We love the location as we live in the area but were very disappointed in our first visit to the new establishment. Service was not professional - waiter appeared shy and hesitant - was certainly not a source of knowledge re: available beers, wines or food, for that matter. Food was passing but nothing more. We were celebrating a birthday but no offer of a desert to be shared at the table - so we left. Our guests were also patrons of Biella and we all agreed that Coaltion has a ways to go to be a place of choice for any of us."

  • "We requested a table for two and were seated at the window. It was sunny and the sun was in our eyes. The sun was also very hot and by the time we left we were both sweating. The food was wonderful. Fresh innovative salads. We split the roasted corn salad. Pea bruschetta appetizer had fresh flavors. We both enjoyed the halibut, a suggestion from our server. It was not over done, very flavorful and presentation was beautiful. Unfortunately the place was so loud we could barely hear each other and with the heat, we probably will not go back. Overall food wonderful but it was just too loud to enjoy it:("

  • "This is a new restaurant -so will give it a lot of leeway(sp?)-first-the air conditioning didn't work-and it was a rare hot night- then when we ordered mussels -they were out-we settled for the oysters- and they were really bad-not fresh and full of sand-gross! We had a fresh pea bruschetta also and it was very good. My companions entres were good-salmon, etc. -non descrip but tasty -I had a very good Brie /apple salad-which saved the night for me. We had 2 desserts- a chocolate one that was good -and a sticky rice disaster -save your money on that one. Our wine was good-and so was our service-attentive, and a good sport-I still recommend -and am hopeful this place can tweak a few missteps."

  • "The Coalition kept much of the charm of the old Biella's and added a lovely back lit blue wine rack. The back of the bar is also quite stunning - but made they made some mistakes with new blue material --- that just doesn't fit....and in their booth by the window - blocking off the view of the street. The food was excellent and some nice choices - I am hoping to see this restaurant evolve a bit. The service was attentive but there still needs to be training on when to approach the table and when not - just 3 weeks opened it is not yet a polished wait staff - as theystumbled over each other at times. But the food is what counts - and it was excellent."

  • "Hmm, where to start. Ok, at the end of the day, we'd go back. However, it is only because of the food. We did have a reservation but when we arrived at the restaurant it was empty (filled while there). We were seated in the middle of the room; when I asked to be moved I was told no. Excuse me? Anyway, we went with our children 8 and 7. I think our server figured "great, young kids, fussy and small tip". Our children are very accustomed to fine dining, are true foodies and have a very developed pallet. Once our children placed their orders (halibut with a hard sear, and a apple and brie salad with chicken) with "please and thank you's", our servers noticeably warmed up and even engaged with the table."

  • "I made reservations for my husband's birthday at Coalition. We got to the restaurant and were seated at a table directly in the sun. Neither one of us could even read our menus because it was so bright. The people next to us were both wearing their sunglasses inside. We asked to be moved and were told they were full. I told her that the table was not usable and asked for a manager. She went and talked to a couple people and then went back to her post. I approached the hostess again and she said that there was nothing she could do. In total we had waited 15 minutes for a manager and no one came, so we left. I was very disappointed, especially because now we had to find a new place to eat with no reservations on my husband'a birthday!"

  • "New restaurant in quaint town of Excelsior featuring diverse menu influenced by global cuisines and featuring local ingredients! Have visited for both lunch (quieter) and dinner (lively and packed)! Favorite appetizers are pulled pork buns and steamed mussels, while the Brussels sprouts and barbequed carrots (with white miso) are delicious sides. Good range of offerings for lunch including salads, sandwiches and entrees; my favorite dinner was salmon - perfectly prepared and delicious! A bit more emphasis on improving service will enhance the overall dining experience (i.e. familiarity with menu items, timing, etc.). The bar offers tasty cocktails - highly recommend the Minnetonka Mule and the Dark & Stormy. Enjoy!"

  • "Wanted to try this new place and really glad I did. Food was great! Salads were fresh, attractive, and not over dressed. Salmon was heavenly as we're accompanying sides. Service was a little slow, had to ask for menus, bread, water refills. Wine list had good selections at affordable prices. Noise was the only real downside. Wait staff is new, and I'm sure will improve, but the din makes me think I will not go back as soon as I might otherwise."

  • "Must start off by recognizing the restaurant just opened and was not prepared for the crowd. The hostess told us they were overbooked and it would be about 15 minutes. This was not a problem but we did ask for a table not directly by the entrance where people were standing to wait and the noise level was high enough that you had to talk much louder than conversation level to communicate with the people at you table. An ok experience. Might try again after the newness wears off. The waitress was very busy and made every effort to be attentive. She did not have very good command of the menu items which again is a bye-product of the newness."

  • "Coalition may be suffering from "just open" issues, but we were not impressed. The venue is very crowded and extremely noisy; it is almost impossible to carry on a conversation without shouting. We ordered the strawberry and watermelon salad which begs to be served cold. The lettuce was warm and the fruit was barely chilled. The salmon entree was OK, but the accompanying brussel sprouts were the color and consistency of charcoal briquettes. The bread basket was less than satisfactory. A few slices of doughy white bread did not complement the dinner at all. The service was courteous, but slow. We expected more from the successor to Biella and were very disappointed."

  • "Went on a Friday night expecting a quaint/romantic vibe like the previous tenant. WRONG! The noise level was off the charts. Speakers were useless, only adding a dull thud to the noise. Desperately need fix for sound system and noise buffering. The menu was promising and food was great. Had mexican corn salad and roasted chicken in pozole, both were fresh, delicious with great flavor. The service however was so bad it made this our worst dining experience in the area and we will not return. None of our servers knew the menu well, recommendations felt "canned," they repeatedly forgot our order (or just couldn't hear us?). Cleared plates before we finished. Too much to fit in characters available here so I'll just say this, Don't Go!"

  • "Fresh ingredients. The pork loin was the tender and delicious! Brussels sprouts were cooked perfectly and the red grapes were a unique but great combination. The atmosphere was fun. Our waitress was helpful with recommendations and our food was served timely. We will definitely be back!"

  • "Our server was very knowledgeable and was very attentive! He recommended a salad comprised of bibb lettuce, strawberries, watermelon, goat cheese and almonds with a light and flavorful mint dressing. It was unique, super fresh and flavorful. There was an option to add a protein but I opted not. My cousin had the chicken sandwich with a "jam" and melted cheese with a side of their coleslaw. We both ate every bite. For dessert we shared the grilled lemon pound cake with "strawberry chips", a rum anglaise sauce and whipped cream. It was awesome!!! They have a good variety of items on the menu, pastas, salads, sandwiches, appetizers and vegetarian items. Most items are locally sourced."

  • "my wife and I went to the coalition on a Thursday night. the food was a little higher priced and was ok. she had the coalition burger which was 12 and it was ok. we have had better and bigger for cheaper. I had the steak sandwich. it was cooked to order but at 16 it was a little on the higher price. both came with fries which were good. most of the menu items were higher priced and looked ok. the pear martini was very good and the mtka mule was above average for a drink as it didn't have a strong alcohol taste. it went down smooth. they had multi level tables which we didn't sit at one but the people that did looked like they didn't like it too much. I think this place is a good place for drinks and apps. didn't have desert,"

  • "This is an excellent restaurant only 10 days after its opening. Service spot on, menu varied and reasonable and food as good as we were hoping. The only problem is the noise. There was a group of 10 loud women at the back and a full, lively chef's table next to it. The bar had one loud woman who kept greeting newcomers. The high tin ceiling resounds with the noise. The rest of the tables were quiet and it was still nearly impossible to hear my husband across the table. We will go back happily just not with another couple as we couldn't converse and certainly not on Thursday nights, Girls Night Out, nor Friday/Sat. nights."

  • "Menu is "designer", but it does not help one choose with the many listed ingredients leading one to believe that there is something unique that combines them all. "Warm spinach" salad has much in it, but was disappointed when no unique flavor came through. You taste what you see; could have made it at home. Lamb dish could also be duplicated. Would have been nice to be pleasantly surprised with some unique flavor given the many ingredients in one dish. We'll try again as we really want another great restaurant in downtown Excelsior."
