A word from Coal Vines
Coal Vines is a casual neighborhood restaurant that brings a piece of New York City to Kansas City's beautiful Country Club Plaza. As a specialty pizza and wine restaurant, Coal Vines is known for its coal fired oven pizza but is also complemented by a full menu and a wine list that is synonymous with quality, at a reasonable price point. We offer a simple menu of seafood, pastas, appetizers and fresh salads in addition to our New York style pizzas. The casual elegance of the restaurant is enhanced by great music and an energetic dining area. A Sunday Brunch is also offered and has quickly become a favorite brunch spot in Kansas City. The patio and open-air dining make this a popular nice-weather dining restaurant and the candle-lit bar and dining room keep the restaurant cozy during the colder weather. The popular Coal Vines Weekday Winedown (Monday-Friday 3:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m.) offers select glasses of wine for $5.Continued

  • "The atmosphere was very pleasant - clean, not loud/chaotic and staff very knowledgeable and accommodating. Some of the best pizza we have ever eaten!!!"

  • "great food & service, crowded seating, felt a bit cramped."

  • "We suggested Coal Vines as the place to rendezvous before WarHorse and needless-to-say, we were disappointed. The meatball appetizers were lukewarm and the pizza cold. Our table of four was so crowded that I was eating under the pizza tray and I was not the only one eating "down under!" We really did not have the time to send it back and chances are we won't be back. Thank God, I gave up wine for Lent because NO room for wine glasses!!! Very disappointing!!!"

  • "We had a very enjoyable experience. Our reservation was ready on time and we were given a window table which made it that much more enjoyable to watch the outside as well as the inside. We felt like we were the only people in a crowded restaurant. Our servers were excellent!"

  • "We always enjoy the atmosphere and food at Coal Vines. This trip was no different than the others, but our friends were experiencing it for the first time and loved it! The pizza and wine were great, as was the service."

  • "Coal Vines serves excellent paper- thin crust pizza and yummy crispy chicken parm. This is a fun setting on the Plaza! The service is helpful and attentive without seeming annoying. The Caesar salad is dressed perfectly. My only complaint is that there aren't enough croutons. The croutons taste like they've been fried. We would've liked a bucket of them to take home. We will return to Coal Vines again."

  • "Absolutely love the restaurant Coal Vines. We keep coming back for more! Every date night, special occasion or when the craving hits-we are back for more: sharing a bottle of wine, ceasar salad and a large white special! I highly reccommend coal vines to anyone who is looking for a restaurant with great ambiance, service and food!"

  • "I was spending a few days of Spring Break with my teenagers checking out colleges in the KC area and we stayed in the Plaza. We had a great dinner at Coal Vines. We had an appetizer and pizzas that were delicious. My salad was excellent as well. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "The omelet I had was a bit overcooked and dry. I had an omelet with prosciutto and mushrooms and sausage. It was good, just dry. Served with potato wedges spinkled with cheese. Nice. The margherita pizza was fabulous! One of the best we've had since we were in Italy. Seriously. It was way too crowded and noisy for my liking for Sunday Brunch but that's just me. A lot of people enjoy this kind of energy and who am I to criticize that? I would recommend the popular Plaza venue."

  • "The table next to me, seated after me, but got their food before me, in all it took 30+ mins to get french toast, bacon and breakfast potatoes. I felt this was absurd, however, when I finally received my food it was good!"

  • "I went to Coal Vines for the first time recently. It was my birthday, and CV had an amazing review in the Kansas City Star. It was rather crowded (brunch hours) so I was glad I made a reservation. Our server was frazzled, but attentive, and the food was very good. The $12 carafes of mimosas were average, but you get about 5 servings in each so a great deal. Would not recommend for large groups as seating is close together. But perhaps would be better at night for a date. All said, I had a great time and will return!"

  • "First, we were positioned at a table that was somewhat right in the middle of what little bar area there was, which ended up being where everyone stood while waiting for a table. Overall, the place is very nice! We had scallops spiedini and a combo of two pizzas. Overall, I would say both dishes were okay - but not that great! The shrimp and scallops were pretty bland as a whole...the bed of greens that they were perched on were the only thing that livened it up a bit. The pizza was just okay...meatball with a hot habanero sauce was okay at best. Overall, I wouldn't go back - disappointed!"

  • "My girlfriend and I love this place. We like to walk to the plaza and tip into stores and listen to live music on weekends. However, many of the plaza resturants are over priced and mediocre. Not Coal Vines! Whether you are there for weekend brunch, romantic dinner or casual meet-up with friends, Coal VInes can fit the bill. The wait staff and management are friendly and highly accomodating. Food is great, made with fresh ingredients. We like the breakfast calzones on Sunday mornings. Meatball appetizers with one of their signature pizas for dinner. Highly recommended!."

  • "In addition to a fantastic wine list and attentive staff, we were treated to the wine cellar seating area because of the special occasion. Stone walls, candle light fixtures and the smell of Italian herbs and vino -- plus a projector/screen built in. I'll definitely keep this place in mind for events in the future."

  • "We have been several times and it's always good service and good food. We have never tried the pizza which is popular, but soup, salads, bruschetta appetizers are all very good. The quality of ingredients are fresh and presented nicely. We will be back again."

  • "My cousin and I planned a lunch so we decided to eat at Coal Vines. We planned on eating what was on the "restaurant week menu" but instead we ordered something completely different. I had no idea they had a brunch menu with delicious breakfast choices. Very satisfied with food, drink and especially the staff. As soon as we walked in the host greeted us and was very pleasant so was our waitress. Overall good experience with everything. Even planned on taking my mom for lunch there soon!"

  • "Specifically selected Coal Vines based on their published 3 course luncheon menu during Kansas City's restaurant week. Even called ahead to confirm that the lunch menu would be available Sunday prior to making this reservation. More than a little disappointed to arrive and discover CV would not be serving their advertised luncheon menu; only typical brunch menu. Would have definitely chosen another restaurant that was participating in restaurant week with something more interesting than an omelet. Omelet was ok. Server was not particularly concerned when I raised the above issue with her. Better communication next time please."

  • "A group of us wanted to find a place we had never been. The menu looked amazing so we gave Cola Vines a try. I had the chicken and so did a friend. Both of ours was very dry. Two other people had salmon and had no complaints. I had the Creme Brulee, which isn't normally on the menu the waitress said. They should add it, it was heaven!"

  • "We'd never been before & thought we'd try it out for restaurant week. Very impressed. Food was delicious. We'll be back!"

  • "The food was just OK. I don't really see why I paid $16 for a somewhat small portion of chicken Parmesan. But overall it was just OK."
    Dined on 1/25/2014
  • "The meal we had there was acceptable, but not spectacular. The lemon chicken was fairly tasteless and undercooked. The fig first course consisted of dried figs wrapped in Italian bacon--all you could taste was the bacon. The meatballs were very good and a large serving. Biggest issue was that the service was very rushed; the waiter consistently brought a course before we were finished with the previous one."

  • "I'm in love with the white mushroom truffle pizza. What a great experience, to dine while you are watching the pizza artists at work! The coal fired oven, warm atmosphere and friendly service make Coal Vines a must when visiting the Plaza in Kansas City. The pizza, pasta, soups, and salads are all delicious, made with quality ingredients and chef's with a creative twist."

  • "While I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to a friend, it was good enough to give it a second chance. I had the prosciutto wrapped figs for the starter. Some tasted burnt. It was an unimpressive start. However, another member of my party had the meatballs and they were excellent, truly deserving of the adjective "Award Winning". For my soup, I had the Butternut Squash Soup. It was excellent and probably the reason I would go back to Coal Vines. My dining partners deemed the Chicken Parmesan as OK. I had the Scallops, four of them, even though the menu said there would be five. The first three were great, the last one was so gritty, had I started with it, I would have stopped with it. But I found the scallop preparation interesting."

  • "Great find during restaurant week! Only complaint was that our food actually came too fast - we weren't half-way through one course when the next one was being delivered. I am looking forward to coming back to explore other items on the menu!"

  • "The food was good as always but the service was super slow."

  • "Here is a great little pizza joint. Food is always good, but the tables are teeny tiny. We have to keep the wine bottle on the floor, with the purses!"

  • "Stone Vine's is a fun, energetic restaurant on the Plaza. The food is good, the service is superlative, and the ambience is charming. The Ceasar salad is the best I've had, and the beer and wine lists are comprehensive. My only gripe is the space. There is none. Make a reservation. It's worth it."

  • "Came here for the first time for dinner during Restaurant Week. The portion sizes were HUGE. We joked that they were too big, but really, there is no such thing in my mind. It did make it challenging to pace yourself to dessert, which was delicious and we did have to pack it to take with us. Our server was probably one of the most attentive servers I've had in a long time, and friendly. I will certainly be back to try one of the pizzas we saw being served up on the tables all around us. Thanks for helping me discover a restaurant with warm atmosphere, an exciting buzz and wonderful service."

  • "Looked forward to pizza - that is what they are known for - but when it was delivered it actually was cold. Can't imagine when it came straight from the oven BUT it was cold..."

  • "My girlfriend and I spent a snowy night on the Plaza dining at a corner table at Coal Vines. We were within walking distance of the hotel, which was perfect, and the combination of the cozy setting, a wine list with good variety, and a tasty pizza made for an excellent evening. Great spot for couples looking for a romantic evening. Definitely will be back."

  • "We had the calamari to start- delicious and fresh! For the main course, we chose the sausage and roasted pepper pizza - great flavors and very filling. My favorite was the salad with the bacon vinaigrette dressing - yum, yum, yum."

  • "Coal Vines has a delicious brunch menu and excellent mimosa specials. We celebrated an early Christmas lunch here. Probably a good idea to have reservations. We were seated right away and able to laugh and leisurely eat our meal. Will definitely be back in the spring to enjoy a warm weather brunch!!"
