Diner Reviews
  • "Not an every day place - too high end for me. The waitstaff was very accommodating, and not at all pushy. The view is breathtaking (although the table we were at was placed squarely in front of a pillar and next to a wine storage room, so it was a bit limited), and the food is top notch."

  • "Very knowledgeable waiter, very observant of onion allergy, awesome food."

  • "Everything was perfect the only complaint is when the sun goes down its really dark so dark I could read the dessert menu or see my food"

  • "My husband and I chose Coach Insignia for our anniversary dinner which was on a Monday. The restaurant had an elegant, upscale feel to it which is why we chose it. The scenery was nice and the atmosphere was calm. The service was moderate and somewhat disappointing considering the type of restaurant and the expense. The hosts were very pleasant, however, the waitress was not attentive and was slow to respond. We had to make several efforts to connect with her and even when we did she kept forgetting to follow up. We finally gave up on our request. I would recommend the Coach Insignia to a friend for the food and the Detroit experience but I will certainly share my displeasure with the table service."

  • "I was brought to dinner at Coach Insignia for my birthday and had a fabulous experience. The elevator ride up to the restaurant is breathtaking, literally (all glass, facing Detroit river) and the view of Detroit from the 71st and 72nd floors of the Renaissance are beyond compare in the city. We arrived early and had cocktails at the bar, which were fabulous and unique. When we were shown to our table my fiance mentioned that it was my birthday to the greeter and unbeknownst to us, this was passed on to our server. Our server made great recommendations, was attentive and kept the table clear. Food was fantastic, reasonably priced...especially our dessert which had "Happy Birthday" scrawled on it in chocolate syrup with a birthday candle."

  • "The scenic view and atmosphere is great. Attractive wine list. Food was just OK. I had the Blue Fish and was not that impressed. My date had the gnocchi enjoyed it."

  • "I really enjoy the view up there, especially at night. It is very nice to see both cities and i enjoy the food there. Steak is fantastic."

  • "I took my wife here for our anniversary. The view of Detroit/Canada from the restaurant is great. The elevator ride up takes a bit getting used to. It is not bad though just a long ride up to the top of the RenCen. I haven't been that high before. Our waitress was amazing. She did an awesome job. I only had two issues they were not deal breakers though. The first is they had a group in there that was pretty loud. It was a large group so its hard to keep large groups really quiet. The other was the lobster mac and cheese. We didn't really like it, it had a weird sweetness to it that just didn't go well with the dish. Other than that the service was great, the food was great we had filets and broccolini as well."

  • "Service was kind of slow. We went on a Saturday night. We were seated right away by a window which was what I requested so that was good. However I don't think our waiter came to us until 30min later. Food took a while which I expected. When we were done, it took another 30min for the bill to come. Waiter was very nice though. He brought us free dessert because we were celebrating something. tl;dr I recommend for food and ambiance if you are not in a rush"

  • "Save yourself some time and money and do not visit Coach. You can get better food, and service at Roast."

  • "Very nice ambiance and view of the river from the top of the Ren Cen. The food was very good and they had a great wine list. Overall the experience was great until dessert. The waiter brought us the wrong dessert and then had to re-order it so we sat for quite a while waiting for the fix. Other than that, I was pleased with the experience."

  • "The ambience of the restaurant is unequaled in all of Michigan. The professionalism and helpfulness of the staff is un-matched. This is the ideal setting to meet with friends and love ones."

  • "Everything was good other than the slowest service I have ever had, almost waited 30 minutes just for a starter and that was only a ceaser salad! Thank god I didn't order something cooked or else i would prob still be waiting. My waiter was called Eddie."

  • "The food is decent at most; we ordered the bacon, duck and steak. The service is beyond outstanding, which is my reason for such a wonderful dining experience, and the view is amazing especially during the sunset - evening setting."

  • "I think we had the best waiter. He, was very polite and knowledgeable about the food and scenery. The, wife and I celebrated our first year together there and had a ball. Would, love to come again"

  • "It was a beautiful place to celebrate our daughter's 30th birthday. The view was wonderful and the service was great. Wish they had a gluten free soup for me, but did make me gluten free bread which was awesome. Wonderful place to celebrate a special occasion!"

  • "The views were stunning and the food was great! Would highly recommend for a special occasion. The wine list was awesome and the waitstaff was very well educated on everything. This is dining that you need to sit back and enjoy and not be in a hurry. Love that they did'nt rush us. Will be back!!!"

  • "The food, wine list, and wait staff are great. But the true appeal of Coach Insignia is the view. Gives a great scenic overview of the city, river, and Canadian boarder. This place is definitely worth a look. Strongly recommend coinciding with the sunset."

  • "Good experience at coach insignia for our wedding anniversary; friendly and knowledgeable staff. Went to happy hour and got a few drinks before main meal. Overall food was ok. Ordered the Land or by Sea (filet mignon and shrimp). Beef was cooked medium well, had requested medium rare. Potatoes and shrimp were excessively salty. The waiter had no problem substituting for another dish. My wife's lobster mac and cheese was good. Had the creme brule and key lime pie for dessert. They were ok. Atmosphere is nice, and overall dining experience was good."

  • "My wife and I went to coach insignia for her birthday, and it is one of the most overrated restaurants ever. The view is amazing and going through the glass see through elevator, and I'm sorry to say that that's the only thing which you can enjoy there. As for the food I tried the jumbo lumb crab cakes appetizer and it's every but jumbo and the taste of the crab doesn't even hit your taste buds, as for the Greek salad it was average but for the main dish I choose the blue fish plate which is the worst choice to choose. The fish was chewy and tasted like rubber I couldn't even eat it, the waitress noticed that and offered me to order something else. I choose the fish and chips which was a good choice. The service took for ever."

We were greeted by a Host at the elevator's entrance. we rode up to 72nd floor, greeted with welcoming smiles, within minutes we viewed the city from our table. Awesome staff truly professional, Knowable staff. my girlfriend's birthday that evening, surprised her & I with a candle lit dessert!!! • "Beautiful view, good food, excellent customer service. The wait for our table was a bit long, considering we had reservations. However the staff was very apologetic and accommodating. Would certainly dine again."

  • "Had reservations at 8 pm. Seated and got drinks right away, however it took 1 hour and 52 minutes before we were served dinner. They did comp us on 3 deserts, even though there was 4 of us. Wouldn't suggest taking any client there unless you want to be embarrased about such a wait."

  • "I've been to Coach a handful of times and it keeps getting worse. My first couple of experiences many years ago were great. But it's all been downhill from there. This time was the absolute worst. Management was nice and comp'ed our entire bill but it still ruined that part of the evening. This is the second major disappointment from a restaurant in downtown Detroit. It's like no one cares about quality anymore. I will no longer be visiting fine dining restaurants downtown. It's just a waste of time and money."

  • "Maybe it's because we dined during the week the 1st time, but the experience was not half as enjoyable this time...from the lack of vegetarian options to the long waiting period (2 hours to get food). Waiter was nice but had too much to do, way too long between each visit. The food was mediocre at best compared to a couple years ago. Not $200 worth...not this time anyhow. View is always good, staff friendly but scarce."

  • "My sister came up from Fla. who had never been to MI.... we had the bluefish dinner and it was less than satisfactory. My wife meal as good she go the roasted pork."
    Dined on 7/24/2014
  • "The food was good, but don't order the blue fish! It's not really blue fish, and we were given an extra dessert because of this mixup. Other than that, great!"

  • "Parking was so tough. I cudnt find the parking.just going around and around for 3times ended up in going to public parking and I had to walk for 10 mins to get to restaurant."

  • "The Coach Insignia is a perfect special evening. The 72-story glass elevator has a spectacular view of the Detroit River and Canada. PAY attention as you rise above the towers around you, it looks like you are taking off into the sky. The food was amazing. The Gnocchi is GREAT for vegetarians - yum! My friend had the duck l'orange - Fantastic! The butternut squash soup was outstanding. We shared an almond cake for dessert, it's very rich, so two can share. Next came the check. No sticker shock here. A great meal for two (with two cocktails) for under $100! End your evening with a stroll around the full circle, Incredible view. the view has something to offer and after dinner it's lovely to walk the full circle of the building)"

  • "Great evening filled with breathtaking views, unique food and great service. A wonderful place to take a date. Appetizer, drinks and dinner for two will only run you about $150, which given the location and views is worth every penny especially when you consider the service and cuisine. Great romantic date spot or for a special evening with a loved one."

  • "The website mentions a dress code. It discusses your shirt and pants, describes itself as "Business Casual", but says nothing about your footwear. She saw my Nikes®, 'threw' the dress code 'in my face' and said that she "had to seat me in the lounge area". The lounge area had no view out of the windows to the view out of the 72nd floor that the restaurant was on. I'm sure it was a spectacular view, and part of the price, but as that was denied me I couldn't tell. I had the Duck A l'Orange. The Breast meat was perfectly done, but the leg was tough. The one bright spot? The waitress was very good at her job. Would I recommend this restaurant to anyone? NO! They failed two out three areas of customer service and one of reputation."

  • "There was a young blonde haired woman at the bottom of the elevator on the third floor, she was stuck up and seemed like she hated her job. I wish she would've been more polite and not so rude. Over all the experience was good and the service on the 73rd floor was great! :)"
