Diner Reviews
  • "Nestled on the top floor of the RenCen in Detroit, the view is amazing from nearly every seat in the restaurant. The wait staff is top-notch, the food is excellent, and the atmosphere is perfect for a romantic night out, a group outing, or any special occasion. Not to mention the wine list is quite notable. Be sure to also try the Cucumber Vodka Lemonade. Do yourself a favor and make Coach Insignia a must visit next time you're in the city."

  • "We usually eat here two or three times a year, and we have never been disappointed with the food or service. Needless to say, the view from the top of the GM Building is spectacular. It takes a bit of a hike to located the elevator that will zip you up to the top, but the trip is will worth the effort."

  • "The food, ambience, and service were all fabulous!!! The restaurant certainly lived up to my expectations."

  • "Off the bat: the view here is the best. Anyone who has ever stared up at the GM building in awe needs to come here at least once. The ambiance of the dining room is very nice. It was great to look out over the river, the city, and Canada. My wife and I had a very beautiful time on our four year anniversary, and everyone; the hostesses, the server, and the kitchen, knew why we were there. Our server, Jessica, was very helpful and nice. She helped us to decide every facet of our dining experience. The food was great. Not the best I've had from the epicurean group, but still very good. Caramel coffee creme brulee was the best I've ever had. Drinks were perfect. This restaurant is a must."

  • "Not the best meal I have every had, but certainly above average. If I am simply looking to enjoy a tasty meal, I would pick a different restaurant, but this is not the reason to go. The ambiance, and scenery are unlike any other place in Detroit. I have been here several times now, and this was the most enjoyable due to the seat we had, which appeared to be right above the river. We we able to see both shorelines, and follow the water south. We had 8:00 reservations, which was perfect (in the summer) so that we could enjoy a little but of sunlight, the sun setting, and still have a drink at the bar afterwards to enjoy the night lights."

  • "Disappointing. Info about valet parking in email was completely wrong. We were late for our reservation due to construction (not at all mentioned in email). When we finally got there, we were told that valet could bring our car around as we left the restaurant to save time. Our waiter confirmed this as we sat down, reminding him that we needed to leave early for a show at Opera House. Not true, according to hostess as we left. It took over 30 minutes for valet to get our car. We ended up being late for our 8pm curtain at Opera House. Although we enjoyed our meal and waiter (Eric) was quite good, we were incredibly disappointed in all of the misinformation and being made late for our show. It may be a while before we go back."

  • "The main thing that Coach Insignia has going for it is the awesome views which are stunning at night. The food on the other hand was just so-so on the night that I went. My wife and I shared the fried lobster corn dog for an appetizer because that is what they are "known for". The lobster tasted fishy and the batter was not completely cooked on the inside. The mustard sauce was very good. My wife had the filet and sauteed mushrooms. The mushrooms overpowered the dish, but she said the filet was good. I had the filet and seared scallops. Again, the filet was very good, however the scallops were still ice cold and frozen in the middle. I felt that it was a overpriced for what we ate."

  • "Service was great, surf and turf was great, not happy with pork tenderloin entree... raspberry minty jell substance should be a garnish on the side not all over the pork, even then raspberry was nice addition but the mint ruined that."

  • "Very nice place to have a quiet dinner, may that be with only 2 people or a group. Nice scenery all around from the high being on top of the GM building; Michigan and Canada. The menu is limited but the prices are good not to exclude the great service."

  • "The view from our booth of the city, bridge and water was awesome! Eric our server was able to help us make great selections off a unique and some tradition dishes. The crab cakes had plenty of crab and the lobster corn dog (even though I never order coated fried food ) was unusual and delicious. The entrees came perfectly cooked and were just as good as the appetizers. We were offered a free dessert. The chocolate mousse cake was decorated with Happy Anniversary! We spent the rest of the evening checking out the different views. There were plenty of drink choices ranging from specialty martinis, wine list including many from Michigan wineries and an extensive beer selection."

  • "I took my wife out for our anniversary and neither of us had been here before. I heard the food was great and you can't beat the view from 72 floors up. The food was excellent and our waiter, Eddie, was superb. Very knowledgeable about the food and especially the wine. He picked out a perfect wine for my wife and I enjoyed it as well. The ambiance is very nice and you could go with a group or just a couple and it would be fantastic. I highly recommend Coach Insignia, especially if you've never been there before."

  • "They made my Son's 20th Birthday very memorable. The wait staff were all very respectful and non-intrusive. The chef even wrote Happy Birthday in chocolate around his dessert. Fabulous views of the Detroit River and Canada from our table."

  • "My wife and I were celebrating our 13 year wedding anniversary and it was our 1st time at Coach Insignia. We were dressed business casual with very nice tops and dress shorts. The hostess said we could not enter the restaurant so we had to eat at the bar. We were very disappointed since we were dressed appropriately. She said even though they were dress shorts it was not allowed even though we saw customer after customer with jeans being able to enter the dining area. The food was good but they should disclose on their website NO SHORTS since you can dress business casual wearing shorts! The last time I checked business casual does not include jeans! Our waitress was nice and the food was good but not the quality or experience we expected."

  • "The view was awesome, the wine list was wonderful and our waiter even had his level 1 sommelier pin. The ambiance was excellent as well. There were some excellent parts of the food, such as the lobster corndogs with unique slaw and sauce, but the main courses were not quite up to the level I would have expected. The main courses were good, but not great and that was a bit disappointing."

  • "I went to celebrate my wife's birthday and enjoyed every minute. This restaurant is very pricey but she loves this place, if I had it my way we would have went somewhere else but we enjoyed it.we will go again, on her dime."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for our anniversary. It was the best choice. Fancy place, great service, good food, AMAZING wine selection and spectacular view. Bring your special one here and you'll be a duke! Just one word for the restaurant, enforce the dress code. It kind of contributes to the ambiance."

  • "We had an enjoyable dinner and view from the top of the Ren Cen. The restaurant was huge and multiple levels for adequate window seating. Our server was knowledgable and the wine list was extensive. Definitely would recommend the lobster corn dogs as an app- the rack of lamb & cioppino was delish! "

  • "I took my wife for our Anniversary dinner, noting this on our OpenTable reservation along with a request for window seating to enjoy the view. They seated us as requested and everyone was very attentive in wishing us a Happy Anniversary, from the concierge at the elevator to the hostess and our servers. My wife got the Filet Mignon and I got the NY Strip...portions were generous, including the sides, not skimpy like I was expecting for an upscale restaurant. Everything was prepared as requested, wonderful dinner experience. Some other patrons were very under-dressed (some inappropriately) due to a music festival downtown, but that wasn't the restaurant's fault."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for her birthday, that being said the view was amazing as well as the service. The food however was good at best, nothing to really brag about. We started out with the lobster corn dogs which were different, but they were good. We both then had the fillet, which was cooked well but lacked in flavor. The asparagus was fairly bland but the whipped potatoes were amazing. I expected the noise to be quite low, however because of the structure of the restaurant it tents to amplify and resonate sounds throughout the restaurant. One thing that bothered be is that they post a dress code of business casual however it is not enforced. There was a couple next to us, one wearing a sweatshirt jeans a sneakers, ruined the mood. "

  • "First let me say that the food was absolutely fabulous and the view wonderful. It was the little things that marred the evening. Despite having made the reservation more than a week in advance, we were shown to a booth table set for 4 people (not 2) that was right next to the wait staff's noisy hub. The tablecloth had a couple of small holes. A couple nearby was there with a small child (under 2) who screeched randomly. Our waiter was MIA for long stretches of time. After looking forward to Coach Insignia as part of a special night out it was a let down. That's truly a shame because the food was world class and the view is unmatched (at least in the Detroit area). "

  • "One of the best dinning experiences I've had in a long time. The staff was exceptional, very well trained."
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "First. The noise level review probably doesn't apply for a regular basis. There was a private event (maybe a Graduation of some sort) that was really loud, at some point a little uncomfortable with young adults wandering around, maybe the staff could focus a little more on keeping this separate from the regular dining patrons... honestly didn't bother us too much. We were there for our 1st anniversary celebration and it was worth every dime. Everyone was friendly and very attentive to us, the service was outstanding and the food was great. Been coming to Detroit and an "adopted" Michigan resident and this is definitively a must-do for the Greater Detroit area."

  • "My wife and I celebrated her birthday at Coach Insignia. Getting to the restaurant from the main level of the Ren Cen was fun with a great view of the river and Windsor. We were greeted by a very friendly staff and were seated immediately. Our waiter was excellent. She was very friendly, personable, and knowledgable about the dinner and wine menu. The food was very good but not the very best that I have every experienced at this price level. Great ingredient, great presentation, and a step or so away from traditional. We had an opportunity to walk around the restaurant befor dessert and could enjoy the stunning 360 degree view of Detroit and Windsor. During dinner we saw a few boats come up the river and enjoyed the sunset."

  • "The view was fantastic . . . we were lucky enough to have a gorgeous sunset to watch. The food was unique and very good. It is pricey, so it's a special occasion place . . . at least for us."

  • "Overall we were pleasantly surprised by our experience. The food was much better than expected and our server, Kenny, was attentive when appropriate. The only disappointment was that the restaurant did not actually "rotate" as advertised. Perhaps because we had a late dinner they had stopped the rotation? Our view, however, was very good of the Canadian side of the river looking at the Caesar's Windsor casino"
