A word from Club Lago Restaurant
Opening its doors in 1952, Club Lago has anchored the corner of Superior and Orleans since before the neighborhood River North grew up around it. Serving classic Northern Italian specialties from the Garfagnana Valley in Tuscany to steaks, chops and signature sandwiches too, the Lago's staff will recommend the perfect entree for whatever mood you're in.

Third generation owners GianCarlo and Guido are pouring the wine or serving the veal--it's a family affair. Time warp back to the fifties with a glass of chianti in a plush booth in the bar or hold court at one of the tables in the back; Club Lago's ideal for the first date, a meal before the theater or a game, or whenever you're looking to relax to great food and be a regular in a family joint.

Some call it "retro," we call it home. Benvenuti, come on in!

Diner Reviews
  • "We have been to Club Lago many times and it never disappoints. We live down the street and we like to take out of town guests here to give them a Chicago experience - no chain feel - no Americanized food - and no pretense - just good old fashioned Italian food in a very authentic setting that says "Chicago""

  • "Simply put Club Lago is a great place to grab a classic Italian meal, have some drinks and catch up with friends and family. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. Is it fancy no, but they do a great job there. It is a neighbhood spot worth checking out!"

  • "Great neighborhood spot for lunch! Nothing fancy or stuffy, just cozy casual and comfortable. And the food was exceptional. Not a foodie place, but good home style cookin'. Hits the spot! "

  • "I walk by Club Lago all the time I just wanted to try it. The best way to describe it is I didn't dis-like it, and I really like the prices. It is an Italian restaurant similar to the Italian village, really good price point, friendly service, family friendly and kids would probably really like it."

  • "I hadn't been to Club Lago in almost 20 years. I remembered it as a family owned restaurant that had a limited but consistently delicious selection of Italian dishes. It hasn't changed a bit. I was welcomed into the restaurant like I was an old family friend coming to dinner. Our server, Greta, was lovely and was helpful with our choices. It was a week night so we were able to sit in the back and catch up without feeling pressured to leave. Glad it has survived all the changes in the river north neighborhood."

  • "Club Lago appears old-world Italian & inviting from the outside and since they've been around for a long time; even before River North's gentrification, we assumed they must be good. The dining room is a small area in the back with little ambiance and plastic tablecloths. The food was terrible. I will never return. If you want traditional Italian go to Carmine's! So much better!"

  • "This is a great spot for simple, Italian-American food. This is not food like you had on your trip to Italy, but solid, good-tasting, food, with decent portions, served with a smile and good service. The bread is terrific."

  • "I always enjoy eating here. It has an authentic, neighborhood Italian feel. The decor is warm and cozy, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the smell is amazing. The night we went, a table of women toasted their friend who was getting married; everyone in the restaurant raised their glasses and joined in. A friendly and fun atmosphere!"

  • "It was New Year's Eve so we expected it would be busy, but the service was never-the-less prompt, attentive and courteous. We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and decor. It was very warm and inviting on such a cold wintery evening. The food was hearty and what I call "comfort food" because it warmed the soul. The cannoli was perfect. It was interesting to discover that Club Lago was featured in "Mad Dog and Glory" (1991) with Bill Murray and Robert DeNiro. This was an added bonus or feature to the vibe of the restaurant."

  • "I really enjoyed having lunch here with my mother and good friend from out of town. I was excited to show both of them this little neighborhood gem that I found nearby where I work. It has a bit of Chicago history that I wanted to share with them. We even celebrated a friend's birthday there, which was the first time we went. I love the hustle and bustle, the smallness of the restaurant, and the servers. The only thing was that I went on my lunch hour and I cut it really really close to getting back on time. There was a mix up in the kitchen that the server apologized for but this is much more of a cute little dinner spot. I enjoyed my time at Club Lago, will be back and will recommend. My guests enjoyed it as well!"

  • "We really enjoyed Club Lago - we were immediately greeted at the door. We were thanked by name for dining with them. The service was fabulous and the food was even better and we couldn't believe it was so inexpensive. This restaurant will definitely be on our list the next time we go to Chicago and are looking for great Italian food!"

  • "Loved the character, decor of this old school italian. Red and white table cloths in a place that made you feel like you traveled back in time. As a New Yorker, it made me feel like being in Little Italy. The appetizers and the bread were very good, but then came our pasta dishes. They were covered in sauce, but the sauce was more like gravy with corn starch to thicken it up. Flavorless with over cooked noodles. Huge quantity, but little quality. Such a shame as I really wanted this place to be my regular italian joint."

  • "There is really no reason to endorse Club Lago with all of Chicago's dining options out there; old school décor, gum smacking waitresses, Dino on the sound system and "red sauce" Italian cookery. Pretty formulaic, right? That said its success is in the sum of its vintage parts. And the food can be deceivingly good. While pastas can be a bit overly cooked, we also enjoyed brightly sautéed garlicky broccoli, and a lightly battered veal bracciole, with a light lemony sauce. Drinks were stiff and the waitress was accommodating and advised us well. Everyone bid us good night like we were old friends. What could be better than that on a cold winter's night? Carry on Club Lago!"

  • "Good food and reasonable prices, and not fancy. I would definitely recommend Club Lago to anyone looking for a friendly neighborhood Italian restaturant. Guido and GianCarlo run a great place."

  • "Good authentic Italian food. Our waiter was unenthusiastic at best. The wine list is inexpensive and all house wine - you'd at least expect a little bit of choice though at an Italian restaurant. We are not wine snobs by any means, but we got a bottle of cabernet and my wife commented that she had a bottle of that brand of wine in our fridge at home used for cooking wine."

  • "If you want the feel of "Chicago" and what it might have been like on old time Chicago, Club Lago is the place for you. A small restaurant with very friendly and informal staff and old style decor makes this place a favorite of mine. The food is reasonably priced and well done, but not fancy. Just old style Italian that is always reliable. I have been going here for years and never tire of it."

  • "The food was okay but the establishment has blackhawks fever to a fault. At one point they were blasting the game so loud I had to yell for my girlfriend to hear me. That's not what I go out to dinner for. It's a glorified sports bar, if they focused on that they would be fine. They should drop the $30 steaks from the menu, the server clearly steered us away from it for a reason. Thanks to his honesty we had a decent meal but the noise was just overwhelming."

  • "The owner went above and beyond during an extremely busy night to fulfill the Open Table reservation and gave us special seating even though he had to contend with half his space being used by a private wedding reception. Other places may have cancelled our reservation but instead we were warmly greeted and accomodated with great, fun service. We even got wedding cake and were welcomed by the wedding reception guests because we were pretty much seated within the wedding party. Others may have been annoyed by the seating location but in this small, neighborhood spot, where the food is worth whatever the seating arrangement, we were happy to crash a wedding reception so that we could have the great food."

  • "Club Lago has amazing pasta! The spaghetti with meatballs is exactly what you are looking for and satisfies your homemade cravings. The ambiance is super casual and friendly and the service is outstanding. The prices are very affordable. It's a must-visit place in downtown for great pasta without the pretension."

  • "I can't believe I've lived within walking distance of this restaurant for three years and never made it over! The food is awesome! It's old school Italian with friendly service, great food and fun, simple decor. If you've ever been to Club Lucky, the decor feels similar, but Club Lago is a little more casual. We had the antipasto, eggplant parmesan, chicken parmesan and chicken marsala. We also had a side of meatballs and sautéed spinach. All of us loved our meal and the price is crazy reasonable!"

  • "Great staff that made you feel welcome. The food was good - I'd go back - but it's not the world's greatest Italian. Overall, Club Lago is a nice spot for dinner that's far enough away from the chaos of Michigan Avenue, yet close enough to walk to."

  • "Large portions! We went for New Years Eve and I wish we could of taken home leftovers because we had plenty of food left over! Only downside is they don't have a cocktail menu, but they have a full bar. Causal and bar atmosphere so no need to get dressed up."

  • "The best chicken parmesan I have EVER had! Just like homemade by the best Italian mama. Friendly service and the owner is on the premises to greet and make you feel at home. They have a big following of regulars who are there almost daily. A real feeling of a neighborhood restaurant in the heart of River North. Been there 60 years....must be doing something right!"
