Diner Reviews
  • "We were very disapointed in the service -- very suprising from a restaurant of this caliber. We mentioned it to manger who thanked us-- but service was still not improved. 2 out of 4 drink orders were wrong drinks came late--"

  • "Excellent experience for out Anniversary. Attention to detail and level of service from our waiter, Steven, was amazing."

  • "My new fiance and I were in boston to celebreate our engagment. Everyone was great, the food was inventive and expertly prepared. Favorites were the artichokes, foie gras, and tuna with burratta."

  • "The roasted beets with bacon emulsion were killer. Abalone delicious. Sea Bass is hard to mess up but this was perfect. Skipped desert because that part of the menu seemed substantially less interesting -- all dairy and peanut butter and chocolate, but nothing light and spacey."

  • "We decided to sit at the bar. There wine list was limited. No cabernet's. No jack Daniels . The food was good. Did not walk away stuffed which is a good thing. I would not go back. If I spend that kind of money on food,it should be great!!"

  • "Clio is the picture of perfection with intriguing, delicious food artfully plated and impeccable service. The food is among the best I've ever tasted. As much as we all eat with our eyes first (and these plates are beautiful!), I keep coming back for the playful and inventive dishes on offer here. The use of exotic or unexpected ingredients (green strawberries or bee pollen to name two), brings joy to a food adventurist such as myself. The service is absolutely without flaw. From the friendly joking valet staff, prompt seating by host/ess all the way to the apologetic table bussers, the staff were personable efficient and knowledgeable about the food and wine. This is a special occasion place for me and they make the evening special."

  • "We took my husband for Father's Day breakfast/brunch and it was so disappointing. There were only three other parties so it was not as though they were busy in the kitchen. The service was confusing, many people serving the table and constantly asking if we wanted coffee. Among the four of us ironically no coffee drinkers, so asking once they should have removed the coffee cups instead of repeatedly asking. The meals came out but only three arrived. One was incorrect so they quickly took it away but the other meal did not arrive till the incorrect one was prepared again. The food was okay but nothing great. It seemed as though the entire experience was just awkward for some reason."

  • "My husband and I really enjoy this restaurant. The 10 course tasting was fantastic. I wouldn't categorize this as a "romantic restaurant" as the noise level was quite loud. The food and service, however, will bring us back."

  • "we took two tasting menus with one wine pairing. the food looked very exclusive yet tasted very usual. we ve been at michelene star restaurants in northern intaly and certainly have some experience in such tasting menus. when the bill came 3 times higher than what you would pay in michlene star place the dissapointment became even bigger. not interesting. usual wines. totally overpriced."

  • "Very strong, well-edited tasting menu. Service started a little disorganized but soon improved. The dining room is very loud when full, almost making ordinary conversation a challenge. But the main thing is the food, which is among the best in Boston."

  • "We had the 10 course tasting dinner with wine pairing - the food was inventive - some of the dishes out of this world - and the wine pairing spot on. This is the best dining experience I have had in years - which includes dinner at 11 Madison Park two months ago. From our experience and from some of the other reviews I gather Clio tries to be unpretentious and somewhat casual which is commendable. However, please loose the music - it was awful and a terrible distraction and partly ruining the ambiance. But I'm nitpicking - the food was absolutely terrific!!"

  • "Went for our 1 year anniversary. Ordered the 10 course tasting menu with wine pairings. Service was outstanding, and the food was excellent, although a little salty at times. My only complaint was the music; it was not appropriate for that type of restaurant (and $$$$ involved) and detracted from the ambiance. I will definitely go back to explore the menu."

  • "The ambience and service were impeccable. We had a seven course chef's tasting and wine pairing. We appreciated the skill and effort, but it was somehow unsatisfying to us. The wine selection was fabulous and we enjoyed it very much. For my part, I think perhaps the error was mine. I should have chosen the cassoulet and let it go at that. I did discover that I like foie gras. If you are a true foodie, this place is for you. I seem to be a peasant at heart. I prefer figs and prosciutto over monk fish liver pate for a first course."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner very much. We dined off the menu, but I would recommend doing the tasting menu. I didn't love the butter poached lobster, too rich. Drink & service were outstanding."

  • "You will enjoy the uniqueness of flavor that comes from mixing cuisine traditions-- but never that tacky fusion taste. Every bite is exquisite. This is a restaurant well worth visiting if you are in Boston and are in love with fine dining!"

  • "We enjoyed our dinner and the wait staff is very good. Don't be put off that is it in a hotel. Easy access from the T."

  • "As we are nearing our move to New York, we started compiling our bucket list of restaurants we wanted to try. No foodies ourselves, we listened to our foodie friends and went to Clio. We made our reservations online the week before, planning for the tasting menu. Unfortunately, because we each had to get up early and be functional the next morning, we opted against the wine pairing. I don't want to go through all 14 courses, but notable items include the parsnip foam cassoulet with sea urchin and lobster. I didn't know such a thing existed. I also never knew cod could taste so good. This was followed by seared foie gras and venison with bone marrow crust. In summary, I would recommend this to anyone willing to go on a culinary adventure."

  • "Short rib entree on a recent visit had overwhelming salt taste, almost obscuring completely the taste of the meat and all other seasonings."

  • "We did the chefs tastings and it was awesome. Great food that we would not have ordered otherwise. Great place for an adventurous night. "

  • "We hadn't been to Clio for a few years, and our return visit this week moved it right back to the top of the list. Every dish was spot-on delicious, well-presented, and distinctive. My only hesitation about Clio is about the wine program--not the selection, which is thoughtful and a good match for the wide range of flavors and taste--but the extraordinarily high markup for wines. Specifically, wines poured by the glass were a scant 5 oz (and pretty steep at $18+ per glass), and the doubling of retail prices I've come to expect was nothing compared to the tripling or more of retail costs for most bottles."

  • "We both thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience at Clio's, including our pre-dinner cocktail at the bar (the bartender knew his way around an outstanding dirty martini - I'm very picky, and it was excellent…), and our dinner. Dinner was very good, and the staff was very accommodating. My mom and I wanted to split an appetizer and our main entree, and they came through. It was a perfect amount for the two of us. Staff couldn't have been nicer or more attentive. Overall, very nice experience."

  • "A fascinating, surprising, diverse taste experience turning mundane and honest ingredients in a balanced taste rainbow. Knowledgeable and prompt service with flair."

  • "The 7 course meal was outstanding. Starting with Fluke Sashimi, followed by fresh white asparagus, Short rib and many other outstanding dishes presented perfectly."

  • "So we did the SUPER expensive 10-course tasting menu with wine pairing (~$620 for two people BEFORE our 20% tip..which we paid) and the food was worth it! The food was exceptional. The presentation amazing but the wine pairing was off...not the wine choices...they were great. The wine would come out like 15 minutes before your food which makes you tempted to drink it and again, it's a tasting meant to be enjoyed with the food. Our server did tell us the tasting menu could take up to three hours (that was the quote for the 14-course) but the wine pairing timing was just off. That needs to be improved especially when paying that much for dinner. It was very busy that night but I don't think that is an excuse..just bring the wine out later. "

  • "had the 7-course tasting menu with wine pairing. some dishes were simply sublime. especially the lobster in parsnip foam. just sublime. the restaurant was surprisingly noisy tho' -- that was the one downside. Service and food were just outstanding."

  • "After discovering Clio on Bizarre Foods Boston I had to try the food. The food is crafted with science and a curious palate. The 7 course dinner is worth trying and gives you an opportunity to explore all of what Chef Ken Oringer has to offer. I recommend this for all my foodie friends who visit Boston. My personal favorite was the cassolette: lobster, sea urchin, parsnip milk, candied lemon."

  • "As it has consistently for many years, Clio offers some of the best dining in Boston. Sadly, the noise level has gone up and the thumping music, while perhaps attractive to a younger crowd, makes an otherwise ideal meal less than it could be."
    Dined on 4/9/2014
  • "Clio provided an interesting dining experience, the plates were creative, and were a new way to look at ingredients, some were very good, others not quite as well executed. The service was quite good. The ambiance was relaxed, and rustic."

  • "Everything is done to perfection, the wine list is extensive and getting even better under the guidance of Jonathan, the new sommelier. Unlike some of the other top flight restaurants in Boston the staff at Clio are as fun as they are knowledgeable. Clio is a good reason to become very rich, so that you can go there often."

  • "Clio is an outstanding restaurant. The food is in the class of the highest end adventurous dining experiences, with non pretentious knowledgeable service and possibly a slightly more manageable price point. As an example of the dishes on offer, I had an appetizer of burgundy escargot made with kim chi topped with crispy duck tongue, the flavors were subtle, unusual and fantastic in combination. Most other dishes were seasonally aligned with some fish and red meat dishes such as short ribs and swordfish. The drinks on offer were excellent. The wine was on the high end per glass but was available with expert advice from our waiter and it is a restaurant experience for once in a while not every week!"

  • "We had a wonderful meal, our waiter and the staff were great. We tried a few things that we never had before and went with the waiters recommendation ....excellent! We were not rushed at all and had a great night. We would love to go back!"
    Dined on 3/7/2014
  • "Clio is an expensive restaurant that is over rated. Food was good but a lot of fat on my duck entree. Service was pushy-- really, at these prices? Personally I like table cloths and nice silverware at an expensive restaurant. You won't find either at Clio."
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "It appears Clio prides itself on intricately crafted food and drink. The bar sports dozens of flavor distillations (essence of tobacco anyone?). The food all had a lot going on too. Soup was very complex with little bits of this and crumbles of that. Crab salad was brightly Asian flavored, possibly a bit overpowering for the crab. Our pork shoulder and venison entrees were perfectly cooked. Venison accompaniments were drops and swooshes on the plate, just shy of enough to satisfy. Pork sides were a jumbled pile, dark green squirts of nasturtium/wasabi sauce - though interesting in concept, not that wowing. Our server was charming and personable. The prices, fairly outrageous. Enjoyed it, but not on my short list."

  • "after all these years, it has not gone stale. Still very inventive and thoughtful menu. we did the 10 course tasting menu, which was outstanding. the only issue was timing....it took about 3 hours to get through all 10. The staff was very attentive, polite and enthusiastic."

  • "Absolutely fabulous food, one of the best, if not the best in the city. If you are a foodie, this is the place. The service was over the top, there when you need them, gone when you don't. The wine list is amaziing but the food is the reason you go to Clio. The creativity and blend of tastes was wonderful, the presentation was beautiful and the waitstaff was extremely knowleagable and helpful. A wonderful experience overall."
