Perhaps we picked an off time ~ Sunday at 130pm? It was quiet & empty. No hostess to be found and several servers walked past us w/o an acknowledgement. I asked the bartender if there was a host/ess around. He said yes & nodded to someplace behind my head. We cont'd to wait. Finally, a person asked if we had reservations. We did altho there were no more than several tables occupied. A server approached our table and from that moment on, service was impeccable. Food delicious, although both dishes were not as hot as we had expected. Music was nice but we were placed behind a huge pole, blocking a view of the artist. I have enjoyed brunch here in the past and this time was certainly an exception. Usually it is packed & fun & spot on!

Took my husband here for Sweetest Day dinner. Although he's a native Detroiter (and I'm just new to the city 3 months ago), he's never been here. Needless to say we were both well pleased. Atmosphere was lovely, music was great, and the food was excellent. Considering it was a "holiday" I thought it would be overly crowded and possibly uncomfortable, however their online reservation system prevented all of that. Surprisingly, I was even able to make reservations the night of only hours prior to our arrival. Not to forget, we arrived at the restaurant an hour early anticipating some wait time to be seated, but fortunately there was NO wait time and they were able to seat us an HOUR EARLY! We enjoyed our evening and will definitely return.

The music was amazing. The scene was perfect. The building is kind of small, you defiantly want to make reservations so you get a table. I wouldn't suggest a lugging a big purse cause the tables are small. A booth would be perfect though, they are a great size. The menu is pretty expensive. I would suggest eat before you go and just order the amazing wine. I loved my time there over all and my hubby truly enjoyed the grand Jazz.

we celebrated a birthday. Everything from the valet on down was great. The service, Nick, was very accomodating. We told him we just wanted to relax watch the show and we were in no hurry. I know servers don't usually like to hear that, but he was very gracious and attentive. The food was awesome. Served hot and timely. The entertainment was loud, but we didn't find it intrusive. We will definitely be back. Thank you for a very memorable night.

One of America's great jazz clubs. Music was outstanding. Food is very good. As with many jazz clubs, I'm always surprised when people show up and pay to hear the music but sit in the back and hold loud conversations. The house tries to suppress this to some extent but does not strictly enforce a quiet policy.

Cliff Bell's is a jazz club right out if the 1920's! The interior decor is perfectly preserved and they have a great wooden bar. We went on a night with the house band and no cover charge, the music was great. The drinks were good and the food was OK. If you need a jazz fix, this is the place to good in Detroit!

This was our first time at Cliff Bell's and the cozy, intimate environment was great for my husband and I, we usually attend one of the restaurants' for the Detroit Restaurant Week. The food was great but slow receiving our courses in a timely fashion that was the only issue I had. The music was great to have a live pianists and band playing while enjoying dinner and drinks. Loved the apple cobbler desert especially topped with vanilla ice cream, shrimp and braised beef appetizers was delicious as well as the main course. We will return again and this is also a place where friends, co workers and business lunches can meet as well. Thank for this rewarding experience.

My wife and I wanted to check out a restaurant for DRW. My dad is a jazz lover so we decided to treat him to a jazz club and fine dinner. We could not have made a better choice! The atmosphere was nice and vintage. We came on the weekend of a Tiger game. That took some of the romance away, but amplified the fun. The crowd got into the jazz trio that performed and really added to the energy of the room. The meal was well worth full price and allowed us to dine on items we might not have tried otherwise. ( Shrimp and grits?!?- WONDERFUL!) We made reservations thru opentable.com and that too was a very easy positive experience.

First timer at Cliff Bell's. The food was wonderful. Went for restaurant week and had the Better Made Arctic Char. Perfectly breaded and very tender. Could've used a little bit more of a piece. My fellow diner had the same meal, but definitely a larger piece of fish. The corn "sauce" it was on top of was amazing. I wanted to lick the plate! Service was really great. Our waitress was attentive and always available to refill our waters and bring us new drinks. Noise level was quite loud as it was prior to a Tigers game. Did not expect that from this place. Could barely hear the trio playing on stage. It did quiet down a bit after people left to head to the game.

I was disappointed when I first stepped inside and the noise was overwhelming. It was a Tigers game night and everyone was crowded around the bar in their jerseys being loud, not really the scene I wanted for my anniversary dinner with my husband. It quieted down at 6 when the music started, but our reservation was at 5:15, so we were 3/4 finished by the time things settled down. Food was good, cocktail selection was great, but I wouldn't recommend Cliff Bell's as a romantic spot, maybe just to stop in for the drinks and ambiance.

We were disappointed in the parking valet during a Detroito Tiger game and believe increased the price for the valet, restraurant should have offered a discount for eating there. Also the waitress was in a hurry and did not come back to check on table, felt rushed in and out in 45 minutes. Restraurant Week is not recommended for this place. Appitizer was good.

We had a 5p dinner reservation during restaurant week. Got to sit up in the stage area which I convinced my 8 year old was the VIP section. The food was so amazing the 8 year old ate all of his spinach. One uncomfortable moment was when a manager who was in the process of leaving for the day was talking to our waitress within ear shot and he was dressing her down about leaving a napkin on our table or something ridiculous.

Had dinner with 3 friends during resturant week. Limited menu with 5 options to choose from for 3 courses (All food tasted good). Sat down at 6:45, ordered all 3 courses by 6:55, did not leave until 9:45. Waited over an hour and a half for our entrees, and even had the waitress come out and ask us to reorder after waiting an hour. This is after multiple complaints to the manager, who seemed to be the only one serving food to the entire resturant. Not to mention, while waiting, our glasses sat empty for long extended periods, in which we actually took our glasses to the bar to be filled.

Cliff Bell's is exactly what we wanted it to be! A neatly packed away little jazz/bar/restaurant worthy of it's notable reputation for fine dining, music and drinks! We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the trio playing on the stage we sat right in front of, eating our delectable meal. We thoroughly enjoyed the architecture and decor as well. The woodworking in the restaurant is so warm and inviting. Thanks again for a wonderful night!

We ate there a couple of nights ago and it was just an awful experience. It was Restaurant Week so we chose the fixed menu they were offering. The noise was deafening and 4 of us tried to manage on a table meant for 2 max. Each of us balanced something on our laps to make it work. It took quite a while to get our first course, then even longer to get the entree. Worse of all was that it took 45 minutes to get our desserts after dinner was cleared away (after multiple promises that it was "on the way"). These were simple desserts, a small piece of chocolate cake or a bowl of ice cream. To their credit, the manager comp'd the dinners which convinced us to give them another try. My advice - avoid Restaurant Week and pick a quiet weeknight.

Having never been to Cliff Bell's before, my girlfriend and I decided to visit during Detroit Restaurant Week (DRW). I chose this particular night due to there being a jazz quartet as the musical act. Cliff Bell's menu listed for DRW provided a relatively wide range of selections of which my girlfriend and I chose different items and shared. We both agreed that the food and the musical act were very good. However, we also both agreed that the service was tremendously lacking. Our waitress forgot to bring items that we had requested and had to make additional trips to get those items, and other times we did not see her for at least 20 minutes even though our water glasses were empty. Fortunately, the service did not ruin the evening.

I have been wanting to try Cliff Bell's. After looking at all the menus for Detroit Restaurant Week, CB's definitely had the most to offer. My husband had the beef tips, chicken Florentine & vanilla bean cheesecake. I had the shrimp & grits, Better Made chip encrusted Arctic char & chocolate cake. OH MY, everything was DELISH! The courses weren't rushed out so we had plenty of time to digest & enjoy the amazing jazz ensemble that played. There was a quartet of piano, bass, sax & drums, all VERY young guys with HUGE talent & our table was seated right at the front next to the stage. We want to make this an annual trip & possibly come more often for special occasions! But it was also great for just an ordinary Tuesday.

Two friends and I went to Cliff Bell's for dinner on a Monday during Detroit Restaurant Week. As the restaurant is normally closed on Mondays, we felt lucky to be there. Our waitress was delightful, the menu choices thoughtful, and dinner quite good. When we got there, the baseball crowd was at the bar, which made it kind of noisy, but after they left, there was a nice sort of buzz. I'd go there again. Somehow $20 for valet parking didn't thrill me, but at least they provided it and took good care of my friend's new car!

We were excited to try CB's for restaurant week. Our server was the worst I've ever had, we got no water, he never told us his name. He forgot 2 of our drinks completely and 1 drink was clearly missing something. The apps were ok but sadly that is all the food we got. Our waiter was gone for at least 45mins then avoided us trying to get his attention. Finally when we asked where our food was all we got was "I don't know". It's been 1:50mins and no entree, those seated after us have had 2 courses already. The manager was also no help not doing anything to get our food. He didn't put our order in they were out of what we wanted now. We walked out without paying. This review doesn't do the horrible service justice. My BF will never go back.

To keep it short and sweet...a couple of friends and I went to Cliff Bells for Sunday brunch. We shared food of course, and everything was great. We had the chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, and the southern breakfast. I don't eat pork so the chicken and waffles was perfect for me and it was Yummy! And, let's not forget the bottomless mimosas and bloody Mary's. I would prefer and Bloody Mary bar, just not the same when it's mixed for you. But, NO complaints about the mimosas...

This is a nice spot for dining with the one you love in an Art Deco atmosphere with live Jazz music. There is parking nearby or your can use the Valet service. Very flavorful food with options to choose either small or large plates. We shared two savory small plates: mushroom bruschetta and beef tips with mashed potatoes which were both very tasty and enough to satisfy us. Although the menu and wine list are not extensive, most people should be able to find something they enjoy. There was wide variety of types of wines to choose from, however, there was not much of a selection of each type or kind. Service was good and nothing felt rushed. Nice atmosphere. Nice live jazz music. I'd go there again.
