Diner Reviews
  • "I have been going there for years, it is just not the same as I had hope for, probably the cost of there food? very few people at 7:00pm on wed, used to be busy all the time. "

  • "This is a fun, old-school kind of place with huge portions. The prime rib is among the best I've had anywhere. I wish it was closer to where I live but it's worth the drive every now and then. "

  • "I have been coming to this restaurant for over 50 years the quality of the food (especially the cheese bread and steaks) has never changed and the level of service is always personable and gracious. I started bringing my daughter when she was about 15 (she is now over 40) and now my grand children, their first time was for high school graduation. Both of my grandsons are in their twenties now, our one request is never change the ambiance and don't ever change the size of the potatoes.!!!"

  • "My steak didn't make the list of conversation. It had some gristle and was chewy. The lobster didn't have as much taste as I remember from the last time I dined."

  • "Great steaks! Always great service. Highly recommended!"

  • "Steak N Stein is like stepping into the best of late 50s and early 60s dinning. If you looking for the latest food fad your in the wrong place, but if your looking for a steak house to celebrate a special occasion of a special friendship you can not find a better place."

  • "We've been coming to the Steak N' Stein for 50 years. If you want a good steak dinner this is the place to dine. However, the scallops are the best I've ever tasted, and the fried chicken is delicious too. The tasty garlic bread is to die for. The baked potatoes are huge, and you have to try the melted cheese and scallions on top. Our family loves this place. Unfortunately, we have moved out of the area, but always have dinner here when we are in southern California. Just writing this review, gets my taste buds watering."

  • "If you've been to steak n stein you know the baked potatoes are delicious along w the cheese bread and salads. Only thing was that the steak was a little tough. Other that that bring your appetite and you'll be really full at the end!"

  • "Not the best location but hunting lodge atmosphere inside, great steaks and seafood, giant baked potatoes, and their signature bread - yum. Excellent, well-trained staff. Packed on a Saturday nite so make reservation."

  • "My GF made mention of this place a few times over the last few months and I kept putting if off, until last night she finally convinced me to go. I now regret ever waiting so long! I had the top sirloin and shrimp, came with a giant baked potato and onion rings. everything was cooked to perfection. They have a sour cream with chives and garlic dressing, its an instant favorite. I was so full by the end of my meal, that I definitely justified the cost. Not only did they give you a large quantity of food, it was also great quality. The workers were friendly, very attentive, and the ambivalence was really nice and laid back, they have an indoor fire. All in all, its an amazing place and will definitely return."

  • "I grew up coming to this restaurant all the time for special occasions and I absolutely recommend it to anyone and everyone. You get an incredible amount of food for your dollar. The ambience is great and the staff is always very pleasant. I have made this my anniversary dinner spot and will never go anywhere else!"

  • "Enjoyed the food, but it was a bit pricy. The location is not all that great. Perhaps 20 plus years ago, the location was great, but the area has changed quite a bit. Nice local romantic and quiet."

  • "I've been coming here for years and the service and food have always been consistent. It gets pretty busy at night so make sure you make your reservation. It's a good place to eat brunch. And! They let me and husband split the filet mignon plate."

  • "I've been coming here for 60 years and it is stillo basically the same as it was when I brought a prom date here in 1954. In my opinion this is the best restaurant in California and possibly in the U.S. The qualitry and taste of the beef here is above any of the "high-end" steak house chains."

  • "My wife and I went back to this restaurant for my birthday. It was too loud and they are better know for steak as my scallops and my wife's salmon was not very good. Server was very friendly but overall experience was not as good as I remembered"

  • "Food was really good, however the fried shrimp was really salty. Other than that, it was enjoyable. The service was very good. The waiting area is cozy and inviting."

  • "My husband and I had a lovely pre-Valentine's Day dinner on February 12. Our server was Wendy. My husband ordered shrimp and New York steak; I ordered scallops. Everything was wonderful, as always. I love the retro decor! I have been dining at Steak N Stein for nearly 53 years, and my husband has been dining there with me since we were seniors in high school. The only thing that I miss is the lime sherbet! I am glad that new items have been added to the menu; I always order the scallops, though, because you can't find better scallops anywhere! Thank you, Steak N Stein, for another lovely evening!"

  • "While Clearman's is one of our favorite's we needed to conduct some business and it was a bit noisy. Not withstanding they placed us away from the live music and we had a great time."
    Dined on 2/7/2014
  • "Love that this place hasn't changed very much and sticks with what has been successful for them. I especially enjoy that some of the food servers have been there for years. Their loyalty speaks of a family like tradition. I find dining here a comforting and enjoyable experience."

  • "Food and service is always excellent here. The old fashioned decor and service always makes me feel as if I have gone back in time. Love Steak n Stein! Their food and the way they present it has continued to keep this restaurant on my short list of favorite places that my husband and I love to frequent. Thanks for making our visit the other night special, once again."

  • "Good food, impossible for me to eat it all in one seating. Our waiter, David was topnotch, attentive and excellent presentation in searing our steaks and preparing our potatoes. Food eas plentiful and tasty. Our 2nd time there, would probably make it a more regular spot if we lived closer."

  • "Wish I could go there everyday! The food is delicious and service is friendly and inviting. A neighborhood gem indeed!"

  • "Sorry to say but it was not a good dinning experience. I have been a patron of this restaurant for over 30 years and sadly the quality of the food and service has declined greatly over the years. The cheese bread they used to be known for was hard and not very warm. The onion rings are now different, usually served cold and too hard. I was dinning with my mom my wife and daughter. My moms baked potato was burned while me and my wife were served a baked potato that was not very warm ( the butter took quite some time to melt which is a good indication of a not very warm potato ). I asked our server to make the manager aware of or food concerns but i dont think she did because we were never vistied by any member of the management staff."

  • "Great food and huge portions! They prepare/plate your dish at table side, so it's fun to watch how quickly they can put together your dish. The prime rib was great! It's about 1 inch thick and my husband who is a big meat eater couldn't finish it! The service was excellent and since we couldn't decide on the choices for our sides, our server was nice enough to give us each a little bit of everything (string beans, baked potato, broccoli, and onion rings). My favorite was their signature salad (red cabbage slaw mixed with iceberg lettuce and with their house dressing) - I could eat this everyday! Their cheese bread was delicious, also. We're definitely going to come back and bring our family members to try out this neighborhood gem."

  • "The highlight of this restaurant is the decor. Very rustic appearance with chandeliers and mahogany tables. Art decorates the walls. Low style ceilings create a very cozy atmosphere. In the lounge area, there is a fire place in the center that gives it a lived-in look. Food is good. Part of the Clearman chain so will be familiar with menu if you have attended another of their restaurants. Would be great for dates and special occasions."

  • "The dining experience was like a walk back to the 70's with the open fire pit, brick and stain glass decor. There was a retro band on Saturday night that increased the noise level. I was expecting a less energetic dinner. The prime rib was big, juicy and enjoyable! I thought the service was somewhat a disconnect from the pricing."

  • "Great waiter, very attentive. Had the rib eye w/ scallops dinner. Rib Eye was juicy and tender. Scallops were good. Steak and Stein never disappoints."

  • "I'm a 20+ year diner at my favorite restaurant in the LA area. Sadly I have to give it a mixed review for the first time. As always the filet mignon was truly outstanding and their special steak sauce, home made dressings and hot cheese bread were worth the price of admission. What disappointed me this time were the baked potatoes. They were very large, as usual, but way over cooked -- very burnt on the outside skin. What surprised me most was that the waitress went ahead and served them without checking if they had more suitable ones available."

  • "This restaurant is a place to go when you want a fabulous meal and are willing to spend the money to get it. It isn't cheap but it is worth every penny. There is nothing on the menu that isn't amazing. Portions are generous, and the flavors are remarkable. We have been eating here for 40 years and make every effort to visit as often as possible for special occasions. We live 45 miles away but this place is worth the drive. The service is impeccable and the ambiance is very warm and inviting. If I had to choose a last meal before I die, this would be the place!"

  • "My wife and I couldn't ask for more in the way of a dining experience. We've been going to Clearman's Steak & Stein for 41 years, since the days of Giovani and Enrique. Our server on this last experience was Francis, and he was outstanding.....very friendly and very attentive. We couldn't ask for more because more is not possible!"

  • "I have eaten here more than 50 yrs. Food only warm, butter wouldn't melt on potatoes, onion ring batter hard and chewy. Filet had gristle in it. Never happened before and it should not have happened at all. Very disappointing. I discussed this with the duty manager."
    Dined on 12/23/2013
  • "Our reservations were screwed up which worked in our favor as part of our party was late. It was very noisy. The service was extremely slow and with small children that's a problem. The child's hotdog child's hotdog came with burned fries which were inedible. Had to ask for the cabbage slaw. Waited forever for the check. It was a 60th family anniversary and a major disappointment....should have gone to Steak Corral,"

  • "Dinning atmosphere from yesteryear. Low lights and all butter you want on your ginormus potato. My wife says the prime rib on the weekends is delicious (I prefer the scallops). The staff is well dressed and very courteous. Two main dinners, two drinks, expect $80 to $100. Happy hour for two by the fireplace with appetizers and drinks, $30. My only complaint are the customers who show up in torn shorts and flip flops. I don't expect tuxes, but nice slacks and polo shirts would be fine."

  • "Restaurant is excellent with fantastic food; however the ambiance would be better if it were geared towards less kids. Overall I still would recommend this restaurant."
