A word from Clearman's North Woods Inn of San Gabriel
An authentic bit of North Woods set down in Southern California. Before the turn of the century the huge logging wheels holding our sign were pulled by oxen and used to haul logs out of the North Woods. The sign itself is mounted on a slab cut from a thousand year old mammoth redwood tree. Inside
you will find steaks, seafood and sandwiches, also of giant size and quality, our tribute to hearty appetites and to the early pioneers of the North Woods.

The wait staff was excellent food
came out at a good time. My wife asked for her steak medium and it came out rare by all steakhouse standards. They took it back to cook it more and it was still gummy and raw in the center. They eventually brought out a new filet and comp'd it but it was medium rare still. I know steakhouse standards are much different then norm but I eat my steaks rare to medium rare and this was raw. Our friends ordered a salad because she's a vegetarian without chicken and she found a couple of pieces of chicken in her salad like it was already pre made and all they did was pick out the chicken. The wait staff was very apologetic and nice but my wife didn't eat her dinner till everyone was done. Pretty disappointed."

I have lots of friends who swear
by this place, and we just had to give it a try. Everything was tasty and well prepared and service was great. But it almost felt like the idea of the place exceeded the experience. It is steeped in tradition with a simple menu, so of course you have to have the famous salads and cheese bread. Back to honoring tradition, any other restaurant that only offered chopped up iceberg with bleu cheese in cheap fake wood bowls would be skewered! But here it was delicious and just right. And I know some will say this is heresy, but I was not a fan of the cheese bread - it was extremely greasy for my tastes."

We were a large group of nine. It
is a great place to enjoy a great meal and not have to worry about kids disrupting anyone because they are entertained with the throwing peanuts on the floor. The ambiance is loud and fun so the usual kid noise is not so noticeable. It is the perfect place to take the family. Not such the romatic evening place for my style but with the food you just can't go wrong. I wish there was one closer to me."

It's been years since I last
visited this restaurant. The prices are a bit high but I guess its for the food and themed woods atmosphere. Service was attentive. It did get a bit loud as there was a large noisy group in our area. Cod and steak were cooked just right. The medium steak was smaller than expected. Their cheese bread seemed oiler and saltier than the last time I had it. It was good for a special occasion, but I can think of other places with just as good or better food for the price."

It is surprising to me how many LA
natives have such great memories of North Woods Inn. Not being from LA, I don't have those memories. The portions are large and the food is good -- but not great. The night we were there is steady but not too busy and service seemed a bit slow. It is good for groups and it is certainly child friendly. I always feel like it is way too much food and that the price is just a bit too high."

Took our visiting friend from Hong
Kong here for an end of the day dinner after visiting Palm Springs. We had a good time and the food was very good as it always is. As usual the salads and cheese bread are to die for."

The salads were scrumptious, their
dressing is perfect, just the right amount of flavor...cross between blue cheese and ranch. My husband liked the cabbage vinegrette salad better than I did, but I liked mixing both of them together. The cheese whipped butter sauce for the baked potato is fantastic! The ribeye steak was very flavorful and their homemade steak sauce was excellent!"

I must say I was a little
disappointed. I was with a party of six for a birthday celebration. 3 of us ordered the steak, scallops, and chicken dinners. The steak was tough, and the chicken was just not good. We had another birthday in December in the Covina location and the food was similar to this time. I have been coming here for many years and it seems to be going down hill. Of course we all love Northwoods and not giving up on it, just disappointed in the food the last couple of trips. Love that you now allow for reservations."

Great food..they need bigger drink
glasses so u dont have to refill so much. dinners are huge in porportion. we fed 3 people with one dinner. they charge 6.95 to split a dinner.All you can eat salads- yummy, definately on the more expensive side. kind of noisy. Open table was a must."

Great place, but come ready to eat
as their portions are huge! If you can't finish everything, you can take the leftovers home a(and makes our four-legged kids very happy!). Best cheese bread and blue cheese dressed for salads in town! Fun place for families. Took my husband and family there for his birthday and it was great. They let us bring a birthday cake in for him, no problem."

Another trip to Pasadena for work
and another trip to Clearman's. Another fabulous meal. I love the odd but delicious cabbage salads. Seriously, GREAT stuff. I would have given a 5/5 for food, but one guy mentioned his New York Strip was tough and another the filet just so-so. Personally, I should have snagged a piece to decide for myself for I have never had a bad steak or chicken there. Definitely a must go place when looking for great food, well priced, casual ambiance meal."

I originally scheduled my family's
dinner for 7pm but they accommodated for an earlier even with the extra busy crowd. Overall, the Angus beef steak was excellent. We ordered medium-rare. The meat came out tender and full of flavor. I do not recommend the seafood, though. The restaurant gives extremely small portions for the price. Best stick with the meat!! Also, the red cabbage was very satisfying but the other salad was drenched in dressing!! Ugh!! I think I will return another time just for that steak and the garlic cheese bread!!"

I booked here to have our annual
company holiday dinner. We were a small group of 9. Our Open Table reservation was at 5:30. We had 7 of the 9 present at 5:30 since a couple was stuck in traffic. They would not seat us until "EVERYONE" was there. This was the first sign of a "lesser quality" place. The place was very busy. They sat us at a table where it was very crowed. It was so crowded that our server had to ask us to pass everything down the table for him ... he could but just didn't have the room between tables to do his job. The food was not very good. The cheese bread and salads are very good and famous ... steaks, lobster, and everything else was of poor quality. If you are about quantity over quality .. this is for you"

Love this place as soon as I
walked in. Rustic cabin decor all decorated for the holidays. The ambiance makes you feel so warm and welcome. Our server was great. He was well-experienced and gave his recommendations on the flavors of the foods and made everything sound so good. With his recommendation, I ordered the cheese butter for my potato and put some on my rice pilaf, it was a mini-burst of heaven going on in my mouth. :) I got the porterhouse steak that was tender and juicy and amazing. The salads were incredible and he recommended mixing the blue cheese salad with the cabbage salad, that combined with the cheese bread has made me a life-long customer. Definitely a gem of a place that maintains it's class. Will be back soon."

It's still all about the red
cabbage salad. The restaurant is an institution. The food is "comfort", not great - and lots of it. The prices aren't as reasonable as I remember. Bill for two came to $80, and that was just one alcoholic beverage. It is a place where you can just go to and relax. Family friendly. The wait staff is far better than what you find in the hot spots on the west side, where everyone is an actor, hoping to break in. They are waiters that understand how to be helpful, without hovering, or being overly pretentious. If you like a place that is a throwback to mid - 20th century America, go here."

Good steak and seafood, the two
cabbage salads are a favorite (red cabbage/oil&vinegar, green cabbage/mild bleu cheese). The prices are higher than the equivalent competition (Outback, Black Angus), but the portions are huge and the baked potato could feed a family of 4. We enjoy going here occasionally and chose it for a midweek wedding anniversary celebration. We weren't disappointed."
