  • "If you're tired of the typical Mexican or Itallian cuisine, head over to the Clay Pit for a truly extrodinary experience. Even though the restaurant can seat several hundred people, it was managed quite nicely. Please make reservations however. Parking was convenient with two parking garages and street side parking available next to the restaurant. The photographs on the walls are wonderful and the historic charm of the Bertram building makes this an excellent location. The food was AMAZING!! All the food choices were explained thoroughly and our young kids found delicious choices on the menu. They especially loved the mango drinks. We would highly recommend the Clay Pit for your next special occasion. Enjoy!"

  • "We had an excellent meal at Clay Pit. We were seated in the cellar which we like because it is more intimate. We both ordered vegeterian dishes and were not disappointed, although their meat, fish, and chicken dishes are wonderful as well. The portions are hearty, the naan is wonderful, and the potato appetizer has just the right flavor and kick to start us off well. The service was attentive and friendly, and we enjoyed the whole evening very much. The bonus is that for such a great experience, the prices remain very reasonable."

  • "We went for a birthday celebration! Service was good early on...waited along time for dessert and check. Need a kids menu or kid friendly options. We would go back"

  • "We had a group of nine. The restaurant was able to provide us with a charming private room which was a wine cellar. The manager gave us a charming history of the building and took us down to the basement which is allegedly haunted but also contains a lovely room for eating."

  • "We started w Triple cheese naan and mussels. It was so delicious! Our server was in training but he was awesome and better than most servers who are not! Loved this place and recommend it highly if you are looking for quality Indian food!"

  • "Everything about my experience was positive. I loved it there as did my parents who came with me. I will definitely be returning."

  • "I came in a large group, and the waiters were very accommodating. The food was amazing, and the ambience was perfect! I ordered the coconut curry paneer, and it was absolutely delicious. I really think the only thing that could be better is the naan. Although it was still great, I like it to be extra fluffy with no crispy sections of the bread, and there were just a few. But that is being very picky, so I have no complaints!"

  • "Love the overall variety and quality of dishes here and the exotic cocktails..however they have weak spots in vegetable dishes and lighting ...very noisy on Friday nights.. Parking is a pain."

  • "As a Brit living in Austin who has also travelled in India, I am well versed in the delights of Indian cuisine. The Clay Pit provides tasty Indian food with great service. Not entirely authentic but nevertheless great flavors. We sat in the cellar which was quiet. Ground level was much more frenetic. It's in the top 3 Indian restaurants in Austin, great value and well worth a visit."

  • "We love the Clay Pit! It's my 10 yr old daughters favorite restaurant. We love the curried mussels. I think it's a family friendly place but can also be a romantic place depending in where you're seated. Were always served promptly at the bar as we usually show up a few min before our reservation. Will return"

  • "When we last visited this restaurant, in 2002, we thought it offered spectacularly good Indian dishes and that the facility was topnotch. On our return we ordered rack of lamb, saag paneer, naan, kheer, and mango ice cream. All very good, particularly the lamb, but each dish lacked some of the just-right combinations and concentrations of spices that we remembered from before. The cheese in the saag paneer was so-so. The interior of the restaurant seems tired. Nevertheless, for those who enjoy Indian cuisine, the Clay Pit is a good choice. We promise to return well before another 12 years elapses."

  • "A group of us at a conference came here to unwind and we couldn't have picked a better place. I had reservations for 5, but invited a few others to share our table. The front staff were very accommodating in setting up the table. We ended up with a party of 9! Our server, Helton, was knowledgeable when it came time to choosing wine and as it was Happy Hour the $40 bottle of Malbec was half-price. Food was scrumptious. I don't know what everyone got at the table, but my Lamb Roganjosh was stunning. The portion was a little small, but it packed a delicious bite and I was glad not to have left-overs. Our service was extraordinary. Helton is beyond amazing. Go. Eat. Make some noise. Clay Pit is heaven."

  • "We got there on a Friday a half hour before they opened and sat at the bar. They had half price app's and $1 off drinks. The bartender was busy and by himself so it took almost 15 min just to get our drink and app order. That was a little annoying but his personality and menu knowledge made up for it. Food was excellent all the way around! The service was great although unlike the bartender the server had no clue about the menu. She didn't know what was in what or how to say menu items. The price was not at all bad for what you got tho it is on the high end when you talk of Indian food."

  • "Anyone who's thinking about trying Indian food should give The Clay Pit a try. The food is excellent and the servers are pretty knowledgeable and can help steer you in the right direction if you are unsure of what to order! And the prices are amazing!"

  • "They rely too much on sauces, the meats and fish are overcooked Not impressed Terrible parking Austin is so overrated. Too small of a city, too much traffic and too hard to get around, better restaurants out of town."

  • "Given that The Clay Pit is my favorite restaurant in Austin, we went there to celebrate my birthday. At Clay Pit, we are never disappointed and often discover new taste sensations, when we are feeling daring. As USA TODAY's Road Warrior of the Year, I travel a LOT, so I appreciate good food, wherever I find it and I am particularly pleased to have found it in my own backyard. This time around I had the Khuroos-E-Tursh and Pakoras, along with the bottomless cup of chai tea. For dessert I had my favorite, the "carrot cake" with cinnamon ice cream; it is well worth the calories. Jacob did a terrific job of serving us and we were able to get to the theatre on time. All in all, another great meal! I can't wait for them to offer a tasting menu."

  • "I was in Austin for a conference and decided to go to the Clay Pit after reading the reviews. I was pleasantly surprized by the quality of the food. I really liked the mixed grill and the vegetarian options are great. I wasn't expecting most of the table to be filled, so I was especially glad I made reservations with OpenTable. I will go again the next time I am in Austin."

  • "The food was good, but the waiter was unattentive and forgot a few appetizers. He did apologize and brought them after our main course. He didn't make any suggestions when I asked for dipping sauces/appetizer for our naan so when I asked again after he brought our main meal, he came up with an idea, but that was too late as our bread was already cold."

  • "I have always wanted to come here and had decided this would be an excellent time to take my girlfriend somewhere special. We had arrived a half hour early (our res was for 10:45pm) just to check out the place early, maybe have a few drinks prior to our dinner. When we arrived they did have a table open and we were quite pleased. We sat and read over their extensive menu and had a very hard time deciding! With our waiter Jacob's suggestion my girlfriend ordered the Khuroos-E-Tursh and I ordered the mixed kabobs. We also tried the Naan stuffed with spinach and paneer cheese and the samosa chaat... We were floored! This was THE best meal we have ever had! We highly recommend dining here..."

  • "I've been going to the Clay Pit for over 10 years and the quality of the food and the value hasn't ever disappointed me. They also hire wait staff and bartenders who are personable and well trained. Although I enjoy the food which is the best Indian food I've had in Austin, it's the employees that make me want to return."

  • "I first noticed that the bar tender, long deadlocks, was really taking care of his customers. At one point a man that eas waiting walked away, right after the bartender said he would he right with him. The bartender immediately got the hostess and described the man to her and asked if she could keep and eye out for him so he could make sure he got what he wanted. Throughout the night I saw the bartender go out of his way to help several customers. Once at our table Jackob took care of everything with, what looked to be, ease. His recomendations for drinks were spot on, and his demeanor was fun yet still very professional."

  • "Austin has a lot of great places to eat, but if you want the very best Indian Food around, the Clay Pit is where you need to go. There's a reason why they are constantly winning awards and commendations - high quality ingredients, carefully crafted flavor profiles, and an impressive selection of wines, spirits, and cocktails."

  • "We are new to Austin and this was our first visit to Clay Pit and it certainly won't be our last. We intend to go back many more times to work our way through the menu because it has a superb variety of Indian dishes - not the same old stuff you get everywhere.. The Curried Crab Cakes were spiced just right and didn't overpower the crab. I had the Goat Curry (hot level) and it was very good and I'll get it again.. My husband had the special - a lamb shank that was out of this world. The service was very good and our waitperson really knew the menu and could make good recommendations. The the restaurant is located in an old historic building that has been redone and the interior is beautiful and romantic."

  • "My fiancee and I had our first date at Clay Pit and we loved it. We haven't been back since, but after I proposed to her on Valentine's Day (she said yes!) we had our first date as an engaged couple back at Clay Pit. I made the reservation a few weeks in advance (I knew they would be booked) and we had an amazing dinner there. We had the crabcakes and pakoras for starters, then shared the vegetable curry special and the Goan Yellow Curry Seafood Dish. Everything was outstanding. Plus, our waiter, Mark, announced that we were celebrating our engagement to the entire room. Incredible experience! This is one of our top three favorite restaurants in Austin. Normal prices for incredible, fresh, from-scratch Indian food."

  • "Love the restaurant, but a little disappointed to be placed in the back room when the main dining room was half-empty. Although the back room has more ambience now with the golden walls and sculptural displays, it's not as satisfying as the main space with the stone and windows and visible bar."
