  • A quiet meal at a busy place

We were greeted quickly and escorted to a table in the downstairs gold vault. At first I thought, "Wait a minute, all the energy is upstairs." It turns out a quiet dinner in the barrel ceilinged gold vault was just perfect for our party of three. Our server, David was excellent and was backed up by a passing server and bus person. David also did a great job of helping us choose our food, which was excellent. He was very knowledgeable about each of the dishes. Highly recommended.

  • Don't order the chicken Marsala!

We arrived at the restaurant about 20 minutes early and decide to sit at the bar for a drink. As we were talking to the bartender he learned that we lived in a different state. He then approached us with his business card and said he does real estate also and if we were looking for a home to buy call him. Really? Benjamin, I will not be calling you! We now check in to get seated. I ordered the chicken tikka Marsala and thought it had to much tomato sauce not Marsala taste. I'm surprised with all these reviews as the food was not all that good.

Our dinner at Clay Pit was one of the best Indian meals we have had outside of India. The ingredients tasted fresh, the seasoning was spot-on, and the temperature, texture, and flavor of the Naan were unbeatable.

this is hands-down my favorite Indian restaurant anywhere and one of my great favorites overall in Austin. on this trip we had the calamari appetizer - perfectly prepared, several naan options (garlic one and onion cilantro), and I had the Biryani with lamb. ample portions (almost always enough to take home), so flavorful, nicely spiced, served hot, meat moist and tender. Serving staff is always pleasant and accommodating.

The Clay Pit is not necessarily hidden, but there's definitely not enough hype about it. I decided to try it after a friend said the food was great. I arrived there with my boyfriend and mom, they took us to our table right away. We headed to the basement area, where it was so quiet one may think they were alone in the room, warm (I'm usually freezing in restaurants) and comforting, and the ambiance...amazing; candles lit everywhere to offer just enough light. Then the food, the sweet smell of curry, coriander, and cream was just what I was looking for. Samosas with a tamarind and chutney sauce, basmati rice with Tekka Masala, oh and the Roganjosh. All of it was simply amazing. I will absolutely recommend this not-so-hidden gem.

I took my date out to the Claypit since neither of us had been before. Both of us enjoy spicy food and I can tell you they didn't disappoint. The naan bread is exceptional and their goat curry was great (served desi style). We were one of the first couples at the restaurant at 5:30 but they all soon changed as tables started to fill and noise went from quiet to audible rambling. Nothing disturbing but it definitely made an impact on our conversation (it also spoke volumes about the popularity of the restaurant on a Thursday evening). Will definitely return in the near future as I have yet to find another Indian restaurant in town that serves an adequate curry dish.

We lived in the UK for 6 years and in our 14 years back in the US, we have had great difficulty finding Indian cuisine of the quality we found at our London and Oxford spots. Until we found The Clay Pit, we'd only found one other excellent Indian spot here...located in the DC area. We're thrilled to have found The Clay Pit! This place offers excellent food and a wonderful atmosphere. We have been back here several times--driving an hour from San Antonio to eat here. Make your reservation because this place certainly books up and there can be quite a wait!

We've been going to Clay Pit for many years, and they have some of the best Indian food I've tasted in Austin and Houston too (I lived there for 9 years). The interior of the building and decor are very nice and provide a comfortable, classy setting. My sister and her husband recently moved her from England and were absolutely certain they could not find Indian food as good as they have in the UK. They were pleasantly surprised by the food at Clay Pit, and said it was as great as they've had in the UK. The food isn't as spicy as normal Indian places, so when you order moderate, it really is moderate. If you like spicy be sure to get the extra spicy.

We always love coming here. From the bartenders to the waiters they have amazing service. Every time my family comes to town to visit they ask to go. By far the best tikka masala I've ever had and I've eaten it on 4 different continents. Always clean, unique setting, easy free street parking, never mind a long wait bc the bartenders take such great care of you. And most importantly... Amazing food!!

First time at Clay Pit, had been wanting to go. The atmosphere is nice. Got the crab cakes for appetizer, not a good choice, too much filler. My daughter had the shrimp curry and I had the marinated chicken dish. Both of these entrees was absolutely wonderful. For dessert we got the cake balls in some sugar and rose water. My daughter liked the syrup not the cake. I did not like it at all. I would definitely go back but I would skip apps and dessert and go straight to the entrees which were awesome!

I always know I can count on the Clay Pit for a good meal. The problem is, I don't know when to stop! I usually (always) get the coconut curry with chicken. I request white meat chicken and it's tasty. The pakoras for an appetizer are good and they come in veggie or chicken. The chicken pakoras are a good go-to if you have picky children in your group, they're basically just little chicken nuggets...sent from heaven! And they're gluten free if that's an issue. Also, some people get really nervous about indian food, that's why I always let people know that there are some great grilled options, the malai kebob being my favorite. Highly recommended.
