Diner Reviews
  • "The food was great and the server very knowledgeable about the food always a plus but rare in Austin."

  • "Dinner at the Clay Pit is always great. Food here is consistently good. We hit this restaurant at least 1 time a month. Moving here from Washington DC I was worried that we were not going to be able to find great Indian food--This place never disappoints."

  • "After discovering this wonderful little gem it has become my go to for Indian food. The staff here has always been so friendly and the food has always tasted very good. I've come here with groups and in a pair and I have always had the best time. I can't wait to home back again!"

  • "Always great food and wine but we missed Knutti...."

  • "We love clay out. The best authentic indain food in Austin for sure. We went for an early dinner with our 10 month old and our server was so pleasant to him. Love a place that makes us feel welcome with a rambunctious kiddo!"

  • "Great food! I have been here twice and every time has been fantastic! The goat curry is awesome as is the Chicken Tikka Masala (although I do wish there were bigger chunks of chicken). Definitely worth a shot if you like Indian food, but make a reservation as it gets crowded"

  • "Took an hour and a half to get our two entrees, eat, and leave. When we got our food we asked waiter for new silverware and he told us ok but then went into a long explaination of how they like to conserve water while our hot food just sat on the table and we had nothing to eat it with."

  • "First time at Clay Pit, had been wanting to go. The atmosphere is nice. Got the crab cakes for appetizer, not a good choice, too much filler. My daughter had the shrimp curry and I had the marinated chicken dish. Both of these entrees was absolutely wonderful. For dessert we got the cake balls in some sugar and rose water. My daughter liked the syrup not the cake. I did not like it at all. I would definitely go back but I would skip apps and dessert and go straight to the entrees which were awesome!"

  • "I always know I can count on the Clay Pit for a good meal. The problem is, I don't know when to stop! I usually (always) get the coconut curry with chicken. I request white meat chicken and it's tasty. The pakoras for an appetizer are good and they come in veggie or chicken. The chicken pakoras are a good go-to if you have picky children in your group, they're basically just little chicken nuggets...sent from heaven! And they're gluten free if that's an issue. Also, some people get really nervous about indian food, that's why I always let people know that there are some great grilled options, the malai kebob being my favorite. Highly recommended."

  • "Clay Pit is a lovely place to go for a special occasion. The food is consistently good. The atmosphere is lively with voices mingling in the air. The food is diverse and well seasoned. The wait staff is very friendly but professional. The old stone building adds is a distinct, non-traditional flair."

  • "We make the effort to get here as often as we can. The food and service are consistently very good. Everyone in our family enjoys Clay Pit and it is difficult for us to agree on any one place."

  • "Had a 6:30pm reservation I grabbed at 6:15pm - showed up a few minutes early and was seated right away. Was a wonderful experience although in between servings the vent did get a bit chilly. Great service, great food!"

  • "My wife and I had dinner at Clay Pit, and the food and service were outstanding! Many thanks to the chef and to our server Chad."

  • "Clay Pit is the best Indian in Austin. Everything is always delicious. There were also some great new cocktails to try. Now if only they could bring the pappadam back!"

  • "We really enjoyed the food. We ordered multiple apps and all four of had different meals and were all happy. Will be back again. One of the best Indian food places in Austin."

  • "Our (unfriendly) server did not know the menu well, could not recommend a wine to pair with my meal, and had trouble juggling more than one table at a time in his section. He then forgot to bring us drinks and when we asked for them after some time had passed, he seemed annoyed. The meals we ordered tasted good, although my chicken was overdone and a bit tough. My husband had a lamb curry and that was very good. We will return to this restaurant for the ambiance and for the food - but hope for a knowledgable (or friendly!) server. We didn't realize how much of a difference a server makes when dining out until now."

  • "Changes to menu including no chutneys and Naan brought out at seating and lesser quality food were disappointing"

  • "This place was exactly what you'd hope -- a fantastic blend of Austin character and Indian cuisine. Aside from the outside being a little tricky for one of our party who uses a cane, the place was perfect! It was practically home-made cooking, very very tasty."

  • "Creative dishes without compromising the traditional flavors of Indian cuisine. Elegant relaxed ambience, reasonably priced, and great dish recommendations from our server (Shayna)."

  • "The food is always fantastic. Can get loud, but it is a busy place."

  • "We were seated promptly, in the downstairs cellar. My dining companion had never eaten Indian food so we stuck to the classics. Started with samosa chaat and a bottle of rose. The samosas were a bit soggy due to the chickpea sauce but the chickpeas tasted great. The wine was soft and balanced the food. The main courses were the chicken tandoori and a shrimp curry. Both cooked just right and enjoyably seasoned(mild by choice). Rice and naan on the side were just right. For dessert had the sorbet with mango and ginger - a bit too much bite on the ginger. We took our time and never felt rushed by the server."

  • "This was my first time going to the Clay Pit. The food was great. There were many choices on the menu that I wanted to try so I will be back to try more. Even the price was right."

  • "I am of the school that most food tastes old and tired. This feel into that category. It's probably more of an indication of the larger food supply issue in the US than them as cooks. Recipes seemed good, tried and true. I just personally think you can't source ingredients exclusively from the regular channels and have your food taste good. But, I'm in the restaurant business, so you have to take me with a grain of salt...preferably unbleached. Just kidding."

  • "My guest was a newcomer to town. Clay Pit scored! A very tasty meal served graciously."

  • "I "try" to order different things when we go, but the Tikka Masala lures me in. We started with the Chicken Tandoori Bites and they disappeared quickly. For entrees, my daughter got it and I went with the Mixed Grill (so I could get some on the side for dipping). As usual, the food was fantastic. My daughter tried the Garlic and Basil Naan bread, loved it. I am unable to eat it due to gluten restrictions but it smelled wonderful. We don't get there often enough, mainly due to our varied work schedules."

  • "Haven't been to Clay Pit in a while, and I am pleased to say that it is just as great as ever. Fantastic place to get great Indian food in a slightly more upscale than the average Indian restaurant. My only disappointment is that the quality of the naan has slipped since they brought in a naan machine to deal with the volume that they need to make on a nightly basis. I get that they need to do it, but it just isn't as good as it used to be. Still, everything else (and I'm pretty sure we ate everything that night) is fantastic. Don't miss an opportunity to go."

  • "Everyone has said this place is fantastic. I am confused. Nothing I had was very good. It was acceptable but that's about as far as I'd go. The onion kulcha was good but beyond that....blah. I will return because I liked the Ambience. it should be good - so ill give it one more try. This was my experience and certainly not a predictor for others. Perhaps it was an off-nite."

  • "Waiter tried to talk me out of using a 2-for-1 coupon from Clay Pit I received via email for registering at their website. Very unprofessional. He seemed willing to take the coupon only after I assured him I tip on full value. Instead, I should have immediately asked to see the manager. It was clear the waiter wanted me to back down on using the coupon. The water server, however, was fantastic! "

  • "My husband and I tried this place after finding it on an on line review site. We're so glad we did. It's in down town Austin, but parking is free on Sundays so it was stress free finding parking. The service and food was quite nice. The young lady who served us was friendly and talkative but not in an intrusive way. All in all, we will for sure be going back."

  • "We usually go to Clay Pit whenever we visit Austin. Our most recent meal was one of the best ever. We were a party of seven, but the waiter got all the orders without errors or delay. The service was excellent and unobtrusive. The food was wonderful, each dish stood out in its own way. I'm always surprised when I continue to say that my favorite Indian restaurant is in Texas."

  • "we enjoyed this spot several times and we recently brought my cousin out there who was visiting Waco from Philly. It's worth the drive down I35 to enjoy this place. When it's crowded like our night, we had a bit of a lag between ordering and dining and getting the check. Still the food was not disappointing. recommend!"
