  • "Our (unfriendly) server did not know the menu well, could not recommend a wine to pair with my meal, and had trouble juggling more than one table at a time in his section. He then forgot to bring us drinks and when we asked for them after some time had passed, he seemed annoyed. The meals we ordered tasted good, although my chicken was overdone and a bit tough. My husband had a lamb curry and that was very good. We will return to this restaurant for the ambiance and for the food - but hope for a knowledgable (or friendly!) server. We didn't realize how much of a difference a server makes when dining out until now."

  • "We were seated promptly, in the downstairs cellar. My dining companion had never eaten Indian food so we stuck to the classics. Started with samosa chaat and a bottle of rose. The samosas were a bit soggy due to the chickpea sauce but the chickpeas tasted great. The wine was soft and balanced the food. The main courses were the chicken tandoori and a shrimp curry. Both cooked just right and enjoyably seasoned(mild by choice). Rice and naan on the side were just right. For dessert had the sorbet with mango and ginger - a bit too much bite on the ginger. We took our time and never felt rushed by the server."

  • "I am of the school that most food tastes old and tired. This feel into that category. It's probably more of an indication of the larger food supply issue in the US than them as cooks. Recipes seemed good, tried and true. I just personally think you can't source ingredients exclusively from the regular channels and have your food taste good. But, I'm in the restaurant business, so you have to take me with a grain of salt...preferably unbleached. Just kidding."

  • "I "try" to order different things when we go, but the Tikka Masala lures me in. We started with the Chicken Tandoori Bites and they disappeared quickly. For entrees, my daughter got it and I went with the Mixed Grill (so I could get some on the side for dipping). As usual, the food was fantastic. My daughter tried the Garlic and Basil Naan bread, loved it. I am unable to eat it due to gluten restrictions but it smelled wonderful. We don't get there often enough, mainly due to our varied work schedules."

  • "Haven't been to Clay Pit in a while, and I am pleased to say that it is just as great as ever. Fantastic place to get great Indian food in a slightly more upscale than the average Indian restaurant. My only disappointment is that the quality of the naan has slipped since they brought in a naan machine to deal with the volume that they need to make on a nightly basis. I get that they need to do it, but it just isn't as good as it used to be. Still, everything else (and I'm pretty sure we ate everything that night) is fantastic. Don't miss an opportunity to go."

He seemed willing to take the coupon only after I assured him I tip on full value. Instead, I should have immediately asked to see the manager. It was clear the waiter wanted me to back down on using the coupon. The water server, however, was fantastic! "

It's in down town Austin, but parking is free on Sundays so it was stress free finding parking. The service and food was quite nice. The young lady who served us was friendly and talkative but not in an intrusive way. All in all, we will for sure be going back."

The service was excellent and unobtrusive. The food was wonderful, each dish stood out in its own way. I'm always surprised when I continue to say that my favorite Indian restaurant is in Texas."

  • "My husband and I visited Clay Pit for our wedding anniversary, we arrived 5 minutes early for our reservation and were told to wait while people with no reservation (walk ins) were seated ahead of us. Our waiter was nice but we only saw him 4 times in 2 hours (he had a 30 top that he was working so he took our order and then we waited....... until another server brought our food only to see we had no water and no plates. The food was marginal at best, my veggie korma had an impossibly small number of vegetables although there were grapes in it? For our time and money Tarka is better food, value and service."

  • "If you're tired of the typical Mexican or Itallian cuisine, head over to the Clay Pit for a truly extrodinary experience. Even though the restaurant can seat several hundred people, it was managed quite nicely. Please make reservations however. Parking was convenient with two parking garages and street side parking available next to the restaurant. The photographs on the walls are wonderful and the historic charm of the Bertram building makes this an excellent location. The food was AMAZING!! All the food choices were explained thoroughly and our young kids found delicious choices on the menu. They especially loved the mango drinks. We would highly recommend the Clay Pit for your next special occasion. Enjoy!"

  • "I went to this venue on 18th of April. We sat in the basement dining area which at first seemed cozy however not only does it get very loud with more people being seated down there but it is dusty which aggravated my allergies. Also with it being noisy, our waiter got order incorrect TWICE. Food was good but it is a bit pricey for what you get. Recommend this spot for maybe for a quick dinner date . I would definitely request to be seated in the main dining area though."

  • "We had an excellent meal at Clay Pit. We were seated in the cellar which we like because it is more intimate. We both ordered vegeterian dishes and were not disappointed, although their meat, fish, and chicken dishes are wonderful as well. The portions are hearty, the naan is wonderful, and the potato appetizer has just the right flavor and kick to start us off well. The service was attentive and friendly, and we enjoyed the whole evening very much. The bonus is that for such a great experience, the prices remain very reasonable."
