Diner Reviews
  • "A friend and I, 2 young females from Canada, decided on Cityzen as our one luxury and it was an excellent choice. We had the prix fixe, everything was delicious, and the sommelier was outstanding. The little amuse bouche was a delight of tuna tartare, with a wonderful ginger palate cleanser. It didn't hurt that we were recommended their least expensive bottle of white so that we could stay a bit closer to budget; it was delicious. Service was impeccable."

  • "Everything was awesome. I requested and received a table in the wine room--later found out that it was 'the' prime table. We were able to look directly into the kitchen. Our server, Ellie, was beyond awesome. I had the sweet breads with shaved black truffles. My two table mates had the surf and turf. A glorious 2 1/2 hour dining experience."

  • "I took my girlfriend here to celebrate her birthday and the waitstaff & chef made this event most memorable. Their attention to detail and service were by far the best I've ever seen. The little box of freshly baked bread was the best I've ever eaten. The food was so good & filling that we didn't even eat the next day. We will visit again very soon!"

  • "Continues to be the best restaurant in DC. Creativity without smacking you in the face with it; balanced and interesting combinations of flavors. Service: they have mastered the European skill of being there when you need them and otherwise unobtrusive."

  • "We were looking forward to having our first dinner at Cityzen. There were six courses for $120, with an additional $85.00 for the wine pairing. The service was what you would expect—informative and attentive. However, I wish we had more time between courses. The wait staff brought everything a little too quickly and poured the next tasting menu wine pairing before we finished the previous one. Let us finish! The lobster in the second course salad was overcooked and tough. Cityzen did not live up to our expectations and we won't rush back."

  • "I cannot praise this place enough. Everything was flawless. I was concerned that the 6-course tasting menu would be too much food, but it was not. Rather, the portions were just right. I especially appreciated the fact that we each had the option of ordering the 4-course or the 6-course menu. I've been to other "tasting menu" restaurants and everyone was required to order the same number of courses. The menu is always changing, so I can't steer you toward a particular course. The only constant (and it's a great one) is the mini-parker house rolls, served warm and in their own wooden box--absolute heaven! I gave serious thought to substituting one of my courses for more rolls. Yes, they're that good! I can't wait to return."

  • "Cityzen was amazing - simply amazing. Can't really find anything to fault the restaurant, the staff or the Chef on. My wife and I had a great evening celebrating her birthday (which the staff remembered on multiple occasions). The wine was fantastic (the wine list is phenomenal), and the food was out of this world. All round five stars and we'll definitely be back again. PS - to the couple beside us, I hope she said "yes"!!"

  • "This was a fourth visit over 8 years, to celebrate first grandchild. It has been five years since we last visited and clearly our previous visits had inspired a return. First, the level of light in the room was drearily low. We had also forgotten how much it resembles a train station. We ordered the four course meal, had difficulty choosing something to appeal from each category. Grapefruit was featured in one of four fish dishes as well as one in four/five dessert dishes. It killed otherwise delicious scallops and was weird in the not successful dessert. The lamb was delicious. The waiter was officious. We regretted going and will not return, and realized that once we saw the dim lighting and cavernous room that we should have left."

  • "This was the best meal we have had in DC in years. The chef and his team provided excellent food and the service was also spot on. Compared to dining at 3 Michelin Star Restaurants in London and Paris this is right on par with the best. Bravo Chef!"

  • "My wife and I dine at CityZen for special occasions. The food never fails to amaze and the service is always first class. There's no restaurant better in DC and probably New York, although the New York critics would never admit it."

  • "What a great meal! Eric Ziebold is a brilliant chef, using high quality raw ingredients and combining different flavors than you would expect to cohesive and very tasty complete dish each time. Every dish was a hit, no misses, with a few WOW moments. Excellent service across the board, with a helpful and funny sommelier - what more could you want. Pricey but worth every penny."

  • "If you want to have truly great service and to get out of your comfort zone, CityZen is a great choice. The pre fix menus and multi-course focus of their menu works great with wine pairings and the staff does a wonderful job of explaining each pairing."

  • "Cityzen never fails to provide a memorable dining experience! The staff is so friendly, unlike some upscale restaurants! And the food is prepared and served with such amazing precision. The ingredients tend to be unique, and the combination of flavors result in perfectly balanced dishes! It's our favorite dining experience anywhere!"

  • "My group meets in DC every March and I look for a truly great meal. This year I choose CityZen and was not disappointed. The staff was very responsive to our requests. The food was fantastic and we were pleased to be able to find an expansive wine list. We would definitely return next year!"

  • "My husband and I had dinner at Cityzen last Friday to celebrate my birthday. This is an expensive restaurant so we only come on special occasions. I ordered the chefs tasting menu and everything was delicious. The bread service and cocktails were really good as well. I love this restaurant and I plan to return again."

  • "Upon Diane & Myselfs arrival (albeit alittle late) we were greeted kindly by hotel concierge and escorted to the restaurants entrance. Once inside CityZen we were whisked away to our table right up front, no doubt due to the vison of beauty that accompanied me. Our waitstaff was quick to welcome us and very courtious, we both opted for the dinner tasting menu and I accompanied mine with the sommeliers tasting of wines. Each dinner course was very well executed and quite visually appealing. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a stellar experience in a sleek modern environment. No misses were found through our entire meal and dining experience. Thanx Again, Steven Magnus."

  • "This was our first visit to CityZen. It is in the Mandarin Oriental and as many folks know, downtown DC at night can be a bit spotty for things to do. Our table was ready on time and my wife's birthday was duly noted by the staff. We went with the two tasting menus -- vegetarian and "standard" -- and the premium wine pairings. Both the wine quality and food quality was superb. The wines in particular were unusual and complemented the food. All dishes were nicely done and plated well with good temperature. Note that this tasting menu is quite a bit of food by the end, so go in hungry. The staff was all very attentive and engaged during the meal. We would highly recommend CityZen!"

  • "Actually, CityZen is my favorite restaurant, anywhere. As a vegetarian, with some food allergies, I found them as accommodating and friendly as could be. The presentation was so beautiful, I found myself hesitating to disturb it! Everything was delicious, and we enjoyed the kind and friendly wait team. Super!"

  • "CityZen lived up to its reputation in every way--impeccable service, distinctive dishes of unfailing appeal, and exquisite wines not often tasted in the U.S. We had the chef's four-course tasting menu with wine pairings, which sets one back quite a few bucks, but as a special way to celebrate a special occasion (or to feast on a generous host's account), it can't be beat, certainly in D.C."

  • "This place was AMAZING! The food was a fantastic journey and the wine pairings were spot on. It was my birthday and the staff went over and above to make me feel special. Our waiter was great at explaining the wines and a few unfamiliar dish ingredients. Make no mistake, this is not a cheap restaurant, but you see where each and every penny of your meal goes to. For special occasions I CityZen would be the first place I would recommend to anyone."

  • "A belated celebration dinner. We went with the 4-course menu and ordered different items to share tastes. From the amuse bouche through to the complimentary mignardise everything was interesting, flavorful, and perfectly executed and presented. Several nice touches for our celebration. Excellent selections for the cheese course. Great selection of half bottles of wine. Was surprised the sommelier pointed us to a successful lower-priced choice when he could have done the up-sell that is so common. Flawless service, attentive, but not obtrusive or self-conscious. One rarely encounters this level of dining experience and it does comes at a price. It is worth noting that we were quite full when we rose to leave."

  • "I suspect they may have been severely understaffed that evening as our service suffered (ex we didn't receive wine until the 2nd course of our meal). And although executed flawlessly, the food on the tasting menu was uninspiring given our expectations. All in all, we were disappointed."

  • "We decided to go to Cityzen because of its very high ratings. We were sorely disappointed. The meal started off very well but by the third course of the 6 course tasting menu the food really went downhill, in our opinion. One course in particular, the foie gras poached in cabbage was so bad neither of us would eat more than a bite. The best way to describe the taste was bad boiled liver. The desserts were very pretty but had no taste. The coffee was so bad that my husband, a big coffee drinker, did not even want a refill. When we questioned certain dishes we were told "other diners liked them." I guess we don't have the right kind of palette. The service was generally very good as would be expected in a very expensive restaurant."

  • "Service was excellent other than for lack of personality. Food presentation was beautiful, ingredients first rate. However, other than the outstanding optional cheese course, nothing tasted unforgettable. Flavor combinations were odd, as if trying too hard to be haute. Room was very sleek, but like the food, not warm nor inviting. Can't bash the place because perhaps it was simply not to my own tastes, but once is enough."

  • "Had a wonderful experience for our first time at CityZen, starting at the bar. Lots of interesting cocktails and an engaging bartendar. We were seated promptly (even early because someone had cancelled at the last minute) and attended to quickly. Both of us did the 4 course prix fix with wine pairings, 4-5 choices each for an appetizer, fish, meat and dessert. All were outstanding, we both ordered different things in all the courses, especially the pork belly and the branzino. The S'Mores Souffle was a standout dessert! The usual niceties that one expects as a restaurant of this calibre (amuse bouche, etc), top notch services as well. Fantastic evening, just wish I could afford to go again!"

  • "the food was good, service was very attentive , wine pairing selection was OK... I think its more like an experience , I love the bun, it was tiny and very yummy, the bread was excellent, but I probably will spend this much of money somewhere else."

  • "We went to CityZen on Wed. Feb 12 for our Valentine dinner since we didn't want to be crowded out on the actual day. Boy, are we glad we did that considering the huge storm that was threatening VDay! The decor was very tasteful and modern and we liked the exposed kitchen. The staff was attentive, interesting, diverse, professional, and expedient. Drinks were on the pricey side, but very creative and good. We had a nice Malbec with our dinners, opting for the four-course prix fixe menu. Our fav courses were venison stew, duck and gnocchi dishes. Portions were just right. I thought it a little odd that while we had 6 pm reservations and arrived at 5:55, the door was locked! A hotel staffer checked and said the restaurant opens at 6."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed a late dinner recently to celebrate her birthday. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcomed (the birthday card signed by the chef and his staff was much appreciated!). The food was excellent -- we both sampled the four-course tasting menu, savouring and sharing tastes of the expertly-prepared dishes. Along the way amuse-bouches and other tasty surprises heightened the fun. I can't remember another time when we were treated better or enjoyed a more satisfying dinner experience."

  • "The only reason I gave this 4 stars overall rather than 5 is the set menu. I had not reviewed the menus when I made the reservation and, had I remembered each meal must be 4 to 6 courses, I would not have come. Although the food was truly excellent and the staff made every effort to accommodate food allergies, etc., I prefer to make my own decisions about how much I eat. I would also like more in the way of salads and other vegetables on the non-vegetarian menu. Having said all that, I did share my thoughts with the management as I left when they asked how the evening was, and was very satisfied with their response. When I save up enough to return I'll give it another try!"

  • "Our head waiter was so friendly and accommodating. After asking us about our food preferences, he was able to make a substitution when he found out that we preferred something from the 4-course menu over the 6-course tasting menu. He made some great wine recommendations, even allowed me to sample a couple to make my decision easier! For each course, a waiter came and brought the correct silverware for the course! When they brought out each course, someone described the dish. Each dish was so creative and the unique flavor combinations just worked. The bread was to-die-for! I can't say enough about their foccacia. The s'more soufflé was probably one of the best desserts I've ever had. We were pampered and treated like celebrities."

  • "This restaurant is worth all the hype. I believe after so many visits to top restaurants in NYC and dc that no one has the perfect menu because they all seem to love the same ingredients..ie. the game birds and foie gras, mahi mahi and venisons, etc. so in order to judge them them you have to look past the food and at the totality of the experience.. This restaurant did everything possible to make our tenth anniversary special.they served as we'll and promptly, even a simple concoction of pineapple juice and ginger ale was done with such class..the mixologist added certain flavones to enhance the drink that we're so perfect I was blown away.. Go to this place..forget about the food enjoy being treated like a king..the portions are generous."

  • "We had, without question, one of the top ten restaurant meals of our lives. We've been married for over 42 years and have enjoyed a number of great meals in the USA, Europe, and the Caribbean. CityZen is elegant, extremely well managed, and the food was fantastic. We would like to thank the staff who took such good care of us as we celebrated my wife's birthday. We will return on another special occasion."
