A word from City Winery - Napa Valley Opera House
A word from City Winery at the Napa Valley Opera House
City Winery is the third of its kind, but a unique homage to wine country, all while indulging the senses: tap wine from 30 local winery partners, a top-notch music venue, a full-service restaurant, and private event space in the heart of Downtown Napa in the historic Opera House.

The wines are exceptional: Our tap partners have supplied us with some of the most unique wines in the valley – many are one-time only barrels you won’t find anywhere else. And there is a 400+ bottle list to boot!

The dinner menu features Mediterranean-inspired, locally sourced small plates designed to complement the extensive wine list. Burrata, Arancini, Flatbreads, Carpaccio and hearty meat dishes are varied enough to please a diverse crowd over a few rounds of wine. With the evening’s concert serenading you through your meal, dinner at City Winery means there’s always something fun to experience.

We arrived and had water poured within a few seconds. Did not see anyone else for a long time. After 25 minutes we said we would give it five more minutes and then just leave. At 28 minutes a waiter arrived. Ordered wine which did not come until after our salads had been eaten. The red wine was ice cold. My take on this restaurant is that it caters to tourists, we are locals, and that one is not likely to eat there atwice. Noise was deafening and we had a hard time even having a conversation. Food was not to our liking.

I love City Winery and it is my favorite venue for music anywhere in the Bay Area. This is the second time we have eaten there and on both occasions the service was remarkably unacceptable. The first time, the manager of the restaurant had to replace the waiter who was seemingly absent and the second time we kept asking the busboy to find him. However, both waiters were very knowledgeable and pleasant. In fact, on our most recent visit, the waiter was quite sympathetic and embarrassed at the remarkably poor quality of my main course. We will still frequent City Winery but there are three FAR superior restaurants within a two block radius so we will show up after dinner, early enough only to sip wine before the show.

We went with a Travelzoo voucher, and still had excellent service. Both of our dinners were very tasty and beautifully presented. The noise level was low enough that we could carry on a conversation without difficulty. Decor is modern, and somewhat spare, but the art work is interesting and good. The theater is right upstairs so for a dinner-and-theater evening it's very convenient.

We were pleasantly surprised at the restaurant's ambiance, food, and outstanding service. We were concerned that it might be too Napa-ish, but found it a delightful experience. We were there with friends and we were not disappointed. We would return when in the area.

We ordered the Sloppy Joe, which is vegetarian, but easily made vegan with a slight modification, and you will not feel like you've sacrificed any flavor for the change! Definitely a crave-worthy dish, which is always exciting to find at a non-vegan restaurant! In addition, the wine list is extensive and offers some nice options. If you're looking for a romantic, cozy spot, they have a few small booths that are perfect for 2, I'd recommend requesting one.

We made the mistake of eating at City Winery in advance of a show, thinking we would get a good meal and expedite our entry afterwards. We were wrong on both accounts. The food was horrible. Salad greens were limp, bread was soggy, and the white wine was warm. Our server could not be bothered to serve us - it took 45 minutes just to get drink orders in!! All of that could have been forgiven had we been allowed to pass quickly to the show upstairs. Instead we were pushed outside into the general admission line - waiting 50 minutes for entry along with everyone else who probably enjoyes a better meal than we did. What a mess! As our subject states - don't bother!

  • Restaurant with Live Music!!

We dined in the downstairs room, which had a pianist and a woman singer, who were very good and not loud enough to prevent conversation completely. The service is really outstanding. The organization also presents a calendar of live musical shows upstairs, which I think consist of small musical groups. I have not had dinner in the stage-auditorium room, but tables are there, cabaret-style. One pays a separate ticket price for the upstairs musical shows if one dines upstairs, I was told (I hope I understood this correctly). I suggest you check their performance schedule!!

Our experience at City Winery was underwhelming, but still somewhat satisfying. We've eaten there a few times before, always before attending a concert, and would probably not choose them as a restaurant otherwise. The food is just okay, and there were problems with getting the coffee made properly. Still, we keep choosing to be there instead of one of the other nearby restaurants - at least they have convenience going for them. We also had desert and coffee upstairs during the show - the waiters have to cope with a logistical challenge, but the coffee was still weak and lukewarm, and the dessert wasn't served until the coffee was nearly done. Overall, why not just eat somewhere else, and hit City Winery for the wine list and the music?

So taking yet another friend to City Winery to celebrate her birthday and once again City Winery did not disappoint! My friend was blown away by the seafood special, as was I. The Kate Caesar was delicious. We thought about dessert, but thought the combinations on the dessert menu a bit odd--chocolate torte with pineapple... Maybe next time will be brave and try one. Still my go-to place for lunch

It is great to see the Opera House being brought back to life in its new format. The restaurant is a good idea. We had well executed tasty food with very good service. However the menu is extremely limited, I understand that this is due to some kitchen problems. With all the competitio in the area it will have to change this to survive.

Food was excellent. Limited vegan and gluten free items on the menu but they were very accommodating to make it work for us. The Vegetable Farrow was excellent . I felt the prices were very reasonable for the area and the type of restaurant. The wine list was quite extensive, but overpriced considering the price of the entrees. The entrees ranged from $16 to $27 but the least expensive wine was $11 for a glass.

Had a wonderful lunch with friends before wine tasting last week. We needed to get something on our stomach before tasting, but never knew how great the food and service was going to be. Chef Joe and Chef Ben came out for a table visit and brought a few special treats that they were working on in the kitchen. We left with little room remaining for wine, but have great memories of an awesome experience at City Winery's Tap Room.

The Napa Valley Opera House is a cool space (historic second floor auditorium); visitors and locals both enjoy the variety of entertainments offered in what is now a supper club atmosphere (dine/drink while being entertained). There are a remarkable 30+ wines available on tap, many of them Napa Valley. The menu is interesting, food well prepared. The greeters could do a better job of explaining dining options - we had an early supper downstairs in the large, nearly empty ground floor dining room, unaware that all the others attending this month's 7 pm classic film ("The Women") were dining upstairs. The only seats left were in the back of the room, but we could see/hear the film with no problem.

Had dinner before seeing a film at the conservatory. Don't know Napa downtown well. This was a very good choice for us. Our waiter was attentive and friendly, but not overbearing. We chose to eat downstairs prior to the performance and this was very nice. Great wine list, however, the carafe of red wine was served to cold. Food and menu very nice. I would not recommend eating upstairs in the theater area before/during the performance. The area is overcrowded with small tables/uncomfortable chairs with no room to enjoy the meal and/or performance. Also, serving during the performance just added to the lack of atmosphere. This is not a supper club. Given the current setup, I would not return to this venue.

We made a reservation prior to a show. Our hostess discouraged us from sitting down as they couldn't guarantee we'd make the show-the place was almost empty! Once seated, we had some questions. We asked about the portion size on an appetizer and whether it could serve as a meal with another appetizer. She said it was "huge." When asked for wine suggestion, she said she wasn't quite up to speed on the wines yet (at a restaurant called City Winery). Tomato stack was 2 mushy tomato slices. Fried zucchini greasy. Main course was rushed. Farmed salmon with hodge podge of flavors. So rushed, we ended up with a half hour to spare and went for walk (the best part of the meal). There are much better places to eat in Napa. Cannot recommend.

Attending a musical concert, we went early for dinner. We sat upstairs in the theater area. Since it is somewhat club like, the tables are very close together. I could smell the cologne of the man at the next table. We had risotto balls which were dry and a flat bread which was more like a pizza. It was fine but not a flatbread. We all had burgers of various types which were juicy and did taste good. Service was fair, we got our food in a reasonable time with no errors but there was no connecting at all with our waiter. It was very unremarkable in a city with amazing food options.

I had a friend in town as her husband was performing at the City Winery. As I have wanted to dine here since opening, this was the perfect excuse to try the restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience, food was fresh & tasty, beautiful presentations, and the server was very attentive. Most of us had the seafood special which was local sea bass. Excellent! Napa needed this Dine & Theatre option. I'm sure City Winery is here to stay.

On an event night, everything goes to hell. We arrived around 6:20. I ordered the soup of the day which came out when expected. Our friends ordered a salad, flatbread and 2 orders of salmon. My husband & I ordered flatbreads 4 our main course. Their salad arrived about 20 min after I finished my soup. About 30 min later my husbands flatbread arrived. 10 min after that only one of the salmon dishes arrived. My flatbread and my friends was no where in sight. They canceled their flatbread order, but I was don't cancel mine as I was still hungry after sharing my soup with everyone. My flatbread finally arrived as the opening act was starting upstairs. We missed most of her act. Our drink orders were as screwed as our food orders.

First of all, the upstairs is a music venue which is why we were there. We had dinner before the show and sat outside which was fairly quiet and the evening was lovely. Inside seemed very noisy and boisterous, and it would have been difficult to carry on a conversation. While the food was very good (we shared a salad and a flatbread), it seemed quite pricey for what it was and the wine prices were ridiculously high. Come on! This is the Napa Valley where wine is abundant, and a glass of 'house' wine does not need to cost way over $10. There are too many choices in the Napa area with great food and better prices. Therefore, I do not believe I'll return here - at least not for dinner.

My new favorite place in Napa. With 33 wines on tap to choose from, it was a bit daunting, but after a few half carafes, not an issue. We had a nice sampling of the menu shared between the four of us. We particularly liked the Tuna Tartar and the flatbread pizzas. The staff was friendly and attentive. The full bar looked incredible and I have never heard of some of the bourbons and ryes they had available.

Host & staff very welcoming. Decor lacked coziness. Design interesting, well executed, but dark. Space literally chilly-we (and others) asked for AC to be turned down. Food so-so, especially for price (i.e. mostly lettuce salads @ over $11). CW prides itself on some 30 wines on tap; least expensive $10, and only 1 at that price. Modest pour. Wines by bottle unbelievably expensive--only one @ $30--even up to $1000. Really! Beer on tap @ $6.. My husband returned his as "off". A beer he was very familiar with. CW might want to reconsider its prices.
