A word from City Tavern
City Taverns harkens back to a time when dining was built around an experience, not just a meal, and when the whole community gathered to share beer out of a cache.



We take our inspiration from the 18th century tavern - a meeting place for poets, artists, government officials and the common man.



Our goal at City Tavern is to provide a fresh take on the taverns of old and to provide a warm, comfortable and friendly environment where the entire community can gather.

  • "There was no hostess to greet us. We waited and then I went into the dining room to see if there was a hostess. We were seated at a table in the path of the servers, so I asked to be seated in the nice corner table. We ordered drinks and they took a long time to come. Our waitress finally came to take our order and they did not have an item I asked about. Then we were told there was a new chef, and that item would no longer be served. She assured us everything else was available and then disappeared. While she was gone, we finished our drinks and had enough time to agree that's all we would order here, so we left and went to the FireHouse where we were most warmly received. I want to like you, City Tavern, but please step up your game!"

  • "They must have been short-staffed because service was quite slow. But our waitress was very apologetic and polite so I didn't mind too much. Food preparation was top notch. The place is loud and the sound echoes off the walls, and I wasn't so keen on that. The place is still worth checking out though."

  • "Upon entrance there is a cozy fireplace and the maintained the best feature from the previous Grace O'Malley's establishment- the beautifully detailed wood bar. The interior updates help open the space up. Service was friendly and knowledgable. Interesting cocktail list and a tidy menu. Being in the neighborhood it would be good to back for date night and sit at the bar, fireplace, or patio in the summer to try again. The food was good but the short rib and poutine were unfortunately much too heavily salted."

  • "Despite the fact that it was Valentine's day and the place was packed our server did an excellent job taking care of us. The food was excellent and exactly as described to us. The beer and wine selection was also quite amazing and I like the ambience of the restaurant. It's a little bit victorian but updated, it's perfect for a romantic night out."

  • "Great experience. We had a few things off the regular menu and a few things off the special menu. The valentine's day steak and fingerling potatoes were awesome. The seafood cocktail was good and the salad my wife ordered was ok. I should also mention that the drink selections were extensive and well balanced. The service was excellent! We really enjoyed our dinner and plan to make a return visit soon."

  • "City Tavern is consistent. It's my go-to spot when I want a place where I know I won't have to fight for a reservation, and can order better-than-decent drinks and high quality, delicious food. It doesn't have the inventiveness of some of the trendier places in Chicago, but that's actually OK... I don't need my food to shock me, I just want it to be tasty. The service was a little inattentive and the ambience is a little plain (if not very cozy in the front part of the restaurant/bar), but the hostesses are always, always very friendly and accommodating. I keep coming back to this spot!"

  • "Dined here during restaurant week, however most things on the special menu were "out." This was on a Saturday night at 7pm! Ordered a house specialty, short ribs, that were tough and tasteless. My friend had a pasta special that was equally terrible. When we asked for the dessert menu we were told that all thy had was gelato because their pasty chef quit! A classless, disappointing place."

  • "We very surprised by the overzealous behavior of grabbing plates and glasses off the table as soon as they were empty. At one point the wait staff grabbed my glass just as I set it down. I wasn't done entirely and responded accordingly. I was floored when they responded it's just ice... really? Overall, the food was decent, the servings were small for the price."

  • "Really like this place. Has an eclectic feel, something out of the 20's/30's. Love the bar area and the bartenders are magicians with their mixology. Food is unique and well done. There are things on the menu I had never thought to try but ended up being fantastic. The truffle gnocchi was amazing. The pork rillettes were one of my favorites; jar full of goodness served with warm, crispy bread. The perfect combination of savory, salty deliciousness."

  • "My husband and I checked out City Tavern for Restaurant Week . We like to try new places nearby and have been excited about all the new options in the South Loop. We arrived a little early and chose to sit by the fireplace and have a drink before heading back to our table. Our server was fantastic but the best part of the night was the food. We eat out often and usually have a pleasant experience but often go back to our favorite spots because we just love the food. It's not often we can say everything we ordered was great. We had the Bibb lettuce salad and the chick pea and potato soup, short ribs, Amish chicken, and the beer float and raspberry sorbet for dessert. All excellent! Great place, great food, we will definitely be back!"

  • "We had the Little Gem Salad (it was ok - the dressing was superb) followed by the Grilled Amish Chicken over mashed fingerling potatoes. It was flavorful but, it was a half of a very lge chicken. We could've/would've ordered one and shared it. In a time of obesity, portion control would have been nice. I think that entree needs to be downsized to 1/4 smaller chicken, a little less potatoes and possibly add a nice green vegetable (i.e. broccoli, etc) as a side for bal. The wine (moscato) was good but a glass costs more than if I had bought a bottle of it at the local Binny's. The waitress was friendly & we good service (shout out to Lindsay). Overall, I like this place but, I prefer and will stick to their brunch and lunch menu."

  • "The fireplace next to the bar was a welcome addition on the cold evening we went. We enjoyed a cocktail by the fire before going to our table. Our server was very attentive and help pointed out some items for us. When our dinner arrived, mine was warm but not hot. At the end of our meal, Luis Torres came by our table to see if everything was alright. I mentioned that my dinner was delicious but not hot. I also indicated that he need not make any special effort to correct it as I had enjoyed it and eaten it all. Never the less, he poured everyone at our table another glass of wine. A lovely touch, though not necessary. Overall, our experience was very good and I would highly recommend City Tavern."

  • "I recently bought a weekend condo in the South Loop and I am still exploring some of the restaurants in the area. A group of four of us went to City Tavern for the first time on a snowy Saturday evening. The entire experience was great from the hostess who seated us, to our server, and the food. Our server, who I have unfortunately forgotten his name, was from the "South" and had a beard. He was extremely helpful in recommending wine, beer, appetizers and entrees. We had the sunchoke salad and the cheese board as appetizers, both of which were great. He was very able to describe and recommend cheeses for our group. He was equally able to steer us correctly to the short ribs and casoulette, which were outstanding. Wonderful experience!"

  • "We'd had brunch there since City Tavern opened, but we'd never gone for dinner even though it is a block away. That was our loss! The food is excellent at all price points and the staff was great. I'd recommend the cassoulet, but there's lots more on the menu I want to try. (And it does changes seasonally...)"

  • "I don't think our experience was typical because the visit was the Saturday after Xmas, and right after opening, so we were one of only two families in the place. Therefore, service was excellent and the bar was very quiet. The service was attentive. The selection of beers is excellent. As far as food, everything was very good, but we felt the menu was a bit overly fancy, and lacked more basic choices for the fussier members of our group."

  • "This was our first visit and loved the way the bar has been furnished - cozy yet bright and spacious! The cocktails were excellent, as was our wagu beef tartare appetizer from the specials. Unfortunately the rest of the meal didn't live up to the standard set by this dish. The menu didn't feel very cohesive - there wasn't anything on the regular app menu that appealed to be at all. I ordered the Amish chicken entree and I was surprised it came sat in a few inches of a sauce that had an almost Mexican flavor - not what I expected from the description. My boyfriend had the duck confit and I tried a bite and wasn't impressed with it either, had a strange taste and not a very appealing texture. Hopefully they'll fix their teething issues..."

  • "City Tavern has a new Executive Chef, Amanda Barnes, formally from The Purple Pig. Her new menu is selective but provides enough variety to suit any tastes. Moreover, the service was excellent. Our server was very attentive and answered all my questions. We started with the pickle plate of pickled heirloom carrots, Brussels sprouts and of course, pickles. Very tasty! We also had the Burrata with roasted butternut squash. The cheese was excellent; it simply melted in your mouth. We then had the Croque Madam and the Cassoulet. These were traditional dishes with modern presentations. You did not lose the comfort from your past with the new twist. Also, the quality beer menu we were expecting is there although the cocktails also looked good."

This is our second visit since the change and so far everything we've tried has been very good or outstanding. The staff is knowledgeable and very friendly.   • "We've been here 3 or 4 times. The food is always good. Their new chef is from the Purple Pig so it could get even better. The issue every time we go is the service. It took 10 minute just to get a drink menu, another 10 minutes to get our drink order taken, etc. This last time we had movie tickets. We gave ourselves an hour and 45 minutes (the theater is only 5 minutes away). We skipped apps, ordered our entrees at the same time as our drinks, and asked for the check before we started dessert. We still didn't get to the movie until after the previews had started. It is not that the staff is lazy/incompetent or anything like that. Everyone is hustling. They just don't have enough people."

  • "A friend of mine and I shared 3 of the "first plate" menu items. We had the roasted carrot salad, burrata and the mussels. It was a perfectly sized meal that boasted huge flavors. The waitstaff was very knowledgeable about all the menu items and provided excellent service. The bar area in the front of the restaurant is very homey and comfortable. A great place (especially for South Loopers) to enjoy a few beverages with some friends!"

I would not recommend City Tavern for brunch anytime soon. We did go for dinner a week ago and it was excellent. A little on the salty side but would recommend their dinner menu."

  • "I had a great experience at City Tavern, but the thing that stood out above all was their almond (I think?) cake...had such a homemade flavor to it, that it reminded me of what my Mom bakes for Thanksgiving morning parade-watching in a way that nothing else I've ever had anywhere else has...oddly poignant for me, and therefore uniquely special. Thanks for prepping me for the holidays! :)"

  • "I visited this restaurant the night of the marathon, hoping for a dinner option to satisfy all members of my party. Unfortunately we were very disappointed. We ordered a glass of wine for the three of us, which took over 20 minutes to arrive at the table (even though the restaurant was more than half empty). We tried to order two appetizers, both of which they were out of. I had wanted a burger since looking at their menu ahead of time, but they had run out of burgers (it was 7pm- not like we were coming at the end of the night). We had to really struggle to find something on the menu for everyone, and left feeling unsatisfied. Besides all of this, the bill was over $50 per person for not much food! Highly disappointed by this experience."
