  • "We (a large family group) went to City Kitchen for dinner on Friday. We were not the easiest table to deal with (a large age range, several members of the party were indecisive with their orders etc.) but we were fortunate to have Lori as our server. She was patient, friendly, and helpful and we all came away feeling well attended and fed. Our meals were all excellent, from the child's meal of salmon to the adult dinners (most chose the special that night, which was Ahi tuna and amazing). The group loved the ambiance of the restaurant and appreciated the level of service, which included well-coordinated service from multiple servers. This meal was a high point of our week-long vacation."

  • "The food was excellent and well-presented.Our server was not particularly attentive however and this detracted from the dining experience. Drinks were not refilled despite repeated requests. Plates remained on the table long after we had finished eating our meal. It seems that since the waiter was assured a 20% gratuity automatically included in the bill, he did not feel the need to provide the basic service expected in this caliber of restaurant. Additionally, the restaurant is not well designed acoustically.. Group conversation was limited to the person seated beside you unless you are comfortable yelling above the background noise. It seems, since noise reverberates in this space, that the music would be played at a quieter level."

  • "Enjoyed a great dinner; started with a sushi roll, then enjoyed the salmon. The salmon was well prepared with Asia flavors, not overpowering or spicy. Great salmon flavor with purple sweet potatoes. Chris my server provided excellent service, not in your face, but there when you needed him. The manager made two table checks and this was a busy evening. I suggest making reservations and enjoying a very good restaurant. I enjoyed a relaxing evening and will return in the future."

  • "Went with my husband and mom for an early dinner (5pm) on a Friday night. Service, food, and drinks were all excellent. We sat outside, which was very comfortable and relaxing. Particularly tasty were the scallop appetizer and the salmon dinner. Also, the Malbec on the menu that costs $8 a glass was delicious. Looking forward to going back!"

  • "We love having City Kitchen so close but are probably going to have a find a new go-to neighborhood gem. While the food is good to very good the serive is so frustrating it ruins the dining experience. Our last three visits have been characterized by unapologetic slow service. On Friday, the main dining room wasn't even full and it took forever to get our food and it all didn't come out at once. So after waiting 20+ minutes for our meals! one of our diners had to sit and wait while our food got cold."

  • "My family and I went to City Kitchen for brunch for my husband's birthday. We went just as it opened and so were treated to a quiet and relaxing atmosphere and lavish attention from our waiter. The food was EXCELLENT and the portions were very generous. We are most certainly going to go again for brunch soon!"

  • "I had dined here before and really liked it and thought about trying it out for dinner to celebrate a family members birthday. The food and service didn't disappoint. Both were exceptional. There were several items on the menu that I wanted to try buy chose the short ribs; some of the best I've had. Others in the party were equally pleased with their choices... Salmon, and crabcake appitizer with the hanger steak salad. The menu is varied and offers something for everyone. The only negative comments would be the temperature of the room...it was chilly, almost breezy, at our table although we weren't by any doors or windows. Also it was loud and at times difficult to carry on conversations."

  • "We often choose City Kitchen for the unique salad bar at Sunday brunch, and on this day for the outdoor seating on a beautiful day. While the food was wonderful, the service was subpar. We had to request many condiments, as well as bread plate. We didn't receive one side item. Pancakes were not served with butter. Server was barely available, not to mention 20% auto gratuity for a party of four, which very well may have been in the fine print. We will go back, because the cornbread and assortment of salads, dips, and fresh veggies is hard to beat as warmer weather rolls around, but this was disappointing for a relatively new restaurant with great food and an incredible atmosphere, not to mention a prime location at U mall. Step it up!"

  • "We were seated quickly Friday night and immediately were served water and bread with OO & finely minced black olives. We ordered two glasses of red wine and prepared to wait for our short ribs and bouilliabase. Both came within 15-20 minutes and were completely delicious. The room is quite noisy. I have used their "wine room" for a large group which is very accommodating. The space is quite accessible and I've used it for a lunch gathering with some of my less mobile friends. By far, City Kitchen is the best restaurant that has occupied this convenient space. It deserves our support."

  • "We had a 7pm reservation and had to wait almost 20 min. The waiter was stretched thin ... With a large table ... So someone else finally came to take our order. We ordered a suchi appetizer ... Very clearly explaining what we wanted. When it arrived it was not what we ordered. Our regular waiter reordered but in the meantime our entrees arrived. He graciously asked if we wanted to cancel the suchi so we did. Two suchi orders wasted. Lots of time lost. Lots of frustration for a $100+ bill. Not sure we will try it again"

  • "We come here often and sit at the bar to eat but this time we decided to reserve a table. It was a busy night before a big basketball game and the place was crowded. Our waitress was friendly and trying to be helpful, but seemed like the kitchen was disorganized. We ordered an appetizer, sushi and a burger. My husbands burger came immediately and was welldone as opposed to the medium rare he ordered which made me wonder if it was someone else's order. Next came our appetizer. We finished that and waited for awhile but there was no sign of my sushi. We cancelled the sushi order so we wouldn't miss the game, but it came just after we paid the bill. Their food is generally very good, but I will stick to eating at the bar from now on."

  • "It's rare to find a restaurant that is Fit for Foodies and Kid-Friendly, yet City Kitchen manages to bring it of without hitch. The menu is creative yet approachable and the offerings of gourmet pizza and a truly amazing burger along side SMOKED NORTH CAROLINA TROUT and SPRING VEGETABLE QUINOA RISOTTO AND an extensive SUSHI menu made us want to return with the kids. The services was friendly and quick (maybe too quick) and the food was hot (a must for my husband). A lovely bar made us wish we had arrived a bit earlier to have drink prior to being seated. The noise level is a bit high but the overall atmosphere was lively rather than just loud. We plan to return, which is our highest recommendation."

  • "Most everyting we ate was quite good. Both starters we chose were full of flavor although my table had a slight preference for the grilled octopus over the wok-fried short ribs. We all chose fish for the entrees and neither the trout nor the flounder disappointed in any way. I would note that portion sizes were more than ample which allowed for lots of sharing. Unfortunately the service did not match the food. There seemed to be a platoon system in place and it actually made the service seem uneven especially as the meal progressed. And it was disappointing to have our bill presented to us before we had received our desserts and coffee. We got the clear impression that they wanted to turn our table but we had been there less than an hour."

  • "I took my elderly parents here for dinner with some trepidation because of the noise level and they use hearing aids, but the menu looked good and we booked early. When we arrived I asked the hostess to seat us somewhere quiet if possible but she basically blew me off, saying the tables were all the same and would just get louder as the evening progressed. Way to sell your restaurant huh? Apart from that, the service was very good and accommodating to our special needs. I asked the waiter to bring all the food at the same time as my parents are old-school and won't eat unless everyone is served. No problem. All the food was enjoyed especially the daily specials which were unusual and creative. I would go here again."

  • "The menu's are large & our table was bistro size: no choice than to put the menu on your lap (which requires a balancing act!) or on the floor if you care to take your time ordering. Lighting on our particular table was too bright. Our serving was pushy & all about up-selling, which made it all but impossible to sit back & relax. We started with drinks and the mussels, which were good. Because we felt rushed to order, I ordered something simple ( a rustic flatbread pizza) so I could eat & just leave. My choice had zero flavor: bland beyond acceptable. Will not be returning. For us, 'Kipo's' is a far better dining choice in Chapel Hill, under the same restaurant group."

  • "There were 8 of us dining before going to the theater so we had a deadline for finishing. The food was REALLY good and the waiter made sure we got out on time. I've found that dining with a group can be a hassle sometimes but this was a terrific experience. What more could you ask for . . . good food, nice place and excellent service.   • "The service was great; our waiter was just the right blend of personable and friendly yet not intrusive. Decor was wonderful. Then, the food. My scallop appetizer was far more "interesting" than tasty, though the scallops themselves were well cooked. The real problem came with my entree, a duck dish. Ugh. Tough and just not good. My companion wanted to try it because he'd never eaten duck. He wouldn't want to eat it again. On the other hand, both his pizza and entree, the bouillabaisse, were good. I had a taste of the pizza, and it was delicate and yummy. So, all in all, we may have just hit it on a down night, but I was really disappointed. If I were to return it would likely be for lunch, and I'd stick with more standard choices."

The desert we ordered was unavailable so they just brought us the other option, which none of us wanted, or ate. They should have comp'd us. They didn't. We'll never go back to City Kitchen."

  • "We have been to City Kitchen about a dozen times and experienced great food and service. On Friday night they were very busy. The food was slow and entrees were missing sauces that previously had been on the item a week earlier when we ordered it. Service was slow. Food was luke worm and not the level we expect at City Kitchen. We will try again on a Wednesday night."
