City Housegood value -- great appetizersReally quite good, almost excellent: the kale, and the broccoli apps were tasty, the pastas not so great, the house ham pizza terrific. Too salty too often6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMSolid from start to finishShowed up 5 minutes before reservation (and 5 minutes before they opened) & was politely told to wait outside. Would have much rather preferred to be invited into the bar or foyer to wait as it was very hot out. As people who work in the industry, we really appreciated our server Cole who was very knowledgable about the menu & had a very genuine table presence. Food was very solid all the way around, especially enjoyed the pizza & fettuccine. Atmosphere was a bit noisey/echoey with the painted brick walls. All in all a very good experience & would return.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food is absolutely wonderful. The food is absolutely wonderful. It is unique in every way. I can't wait to return.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the best meals I'veOne of the best meals I've ever had (split among four people): octopus, kale salad, peach pizza, belly ham pizza, catfish, tri-tip, various desserts, etc.6/10/2013 12:00:00 AMCity HouseVery Good restaurant, a little hard to find but well worth the effort, will return again asap.6/10/2013 12:00:00 AManniversaryI took my now fiancé to City House on our first date and now we try and go back on our anniversary every year and have not been disappointed. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is great and we always leave complete satisfied.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Modern Take on Italian FoodI had not been to City House in over a year (as I was living in LA) and I found the food to be better than ever...creative, inventive, fresh, delicious and every course with a new surprise! I had a long time friend from Madrid, Spain with me and he was raving about the food and experience for the entire weekend! I will definitely be back soon. A wonderful evening!6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMAbsolute gem - can't go wrongThis restaurant is amazing. It's chef-owned and feels very comfortable and cozy inside. The wine list is great and service is superb - the waitstaff is friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about the food. We had the potato-cheese appetizer, 3 kinds of wine (rose, white, and red), pasta, sirloin tips, and peach pizza for entrees, kale and roasted broccoli for our sides. All of our food was perfectly seasoned and flavorful. We ended the meal with a mascarpone berry dessert - light and delicate. This is one of those places where you can't go wrong. It has such an understated, sophisticated feeling in a historic setting and the food is outstanding. It's one of my favorites and always on my list to visit when I'm in Nashville.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMCity HouseWe are seniors and were celebrating an Anniversary. The outdoor dining was perfect for us for privacy and noise level. We always eat outside when we can. Food was good and priced right. They did not skimp on the servings. A great place for a special occasion.6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMQuality experienceThe food was excellent but the menu was difficult to read without a Food Lover's Companion at my side. The cocktails are top notch.6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMReally Good FoodCity House was a fun experience. Being from a small town that has very few dining options, it was fun to finally get to try some well made food. The appetizer a potato and cheese dish was one of the best I have ever had. The pizza Margherita was very good and completely satisfactory, but it was missing something to take it to the next level of best pizza I have ever had. The breaded Gnochi was decent, but I have had Gnochi with potatoes that I liked better.
All in all it was a good experence and I would certainly go back!6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMA hidden gem, literally!Although we followed our GPS to the proscribed address, there was still much confusion finding City House. But search, fellow diners, search; it is well worth it! The highest quality food, fine attentive service including great advice on dishes & wine, and wonderful cocktails made for a great evening. Highlights were the shared pizza for an appetizer, white bean soup, house made garlic sausage, and Springer Mountain chicken. Both salads that were sampled as sides were winners. And portion sizes were much larger than usually found at a high end establishment.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat night out!We has such a great time with my friends from San Diego. We sat on the patio which felt tucked away from the city and relaxing. We got the belly ham pizza, kale salad, bresaola and strawberries, and the octopus over chick peas. All the food was so delicious! The crust was chewy and crispy on the pizza, and the bresaola with the strawberries was a unique and perfect pairing. Cocktails were well-balanced. Had a "porch pounder" which was bright and refreshing, and "Scribble" I think? That one was SO good! Our server was new (only three weeks), yet seemed to know the menu really well and answered all of our questions. We had a great time!5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMTop notch food & a great wine listWe've been to City House multiple times and always had a great experience. The food there is always great and the servers are well educated on the wine list and the differences between what is offered.
A few tips:
- Make a reservation well in advance, as it can be difficult to be seated at prime dining times without one
- The dishes are meant to be shared, get a little bit of everything
- There is no valet parking or lot, so be prepared to parallel on the street5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMFunky and FunWe are from IL, visiting Nashville for the Memorial Day weekend. I found City House on a list of good restaurants to try and it sounded intriguing. We went on Sunday evening - the Sunday menu is very different from their weekly menu. It's more creative, playful, and ecclectic. The menu was filled with several light dishes that could be shared. Everything we ordered was delicious! The pork meatballs melted in your mouth! The Sunday steak salad was light and favorful! Our appetizer was a bowl of Hot Chicken Popcorn - how fun! The Scribble and Moose drinks were unique and yummy! And best of all were the desserts - the cornmeal bundt cake with buttermilk cream glaze and the Chocolate Strawberry Icebox pie - divine! A must try!5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMDifficult atmosphereThis was our first time at City House, and the food was wonderful. The ambience, however, left a lot to be desired. It was very stark, crowded, and the noise level was high. It was hard to carry on a conversation.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the best meals I haveOne of the best meals I have had in a while. The pizza is outstanding.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMYeah, it's goodEverything was very nice. The food is delicious. We're vegetarians and somethings that's a problem, but the pizza was great, and we had an appetizer of cottage cheese, strawberries, cookie crumbles - topped with olive oil and fennel. Delicious! Our waiter was helpful and cheerful. After all the arranging and re-arranging it took to get reservations, I may have had unrealistic expectations. It's not the pinnacle of dining experience, but it is very good.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways a Winner!!City House was one of the first restaurants I went to when I moved to Nashville less than 2 years ago from NYC. It has been a fun and delicious dining experience every time. It never disappoints!! From it's friendly and accommodating staff to its yummy cocktails and incredible pizza!! Alway's a winner!!!!5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMTerrific!First time visit was on a Sunday so we experienced the Sunday dinner menu rather than their normal daily one. Everything we had was mouth-wateringly delicious. The pork meatballs were fantastic, and the milk-braised pork was heaven sent! The "hot chicken" popcorn was good as well, though I'd have preferred it to be spicier. Desert plate of chocolate & chocolate cookie tastings was sensational too. Can't wait to return and sample the regular fare.
Now, the only criticism is the rock wall bench seating in the main room. You simply can't lean back without having your back detroyed, so I'd recommend a table with regular chairs to lean back in (you'll want to lean back once you get that full ;-)).5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMConsistent delicious foodWe've been to City House several times and always had a great meal.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a great Mother's DayWe had a great Mother's Day meal. My wife loved the DMQ chicken with Alabama white sauce.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMEverything was delicious-waiterEverything was delicious-waiter was attentive. Even though menu items sounded very "different" it was all great!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMThe client was impressed!I took a client to dinner here - the menu really delivered, the service was attentive without being annoying and the setting was amazing!
Keep up the great work!5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Barbuzzo of NashvilleThis reminded me of Barbuzzo in Philadelphia. Menu was so innovative that I had to ask what a few things were on it (Tesa is a kind of belly bacon). We had a potato and cheese frico, a pizza, and fettucine with a delicious lemony sauce on it. The dessert was also excellent (cream soda cake). We paired it with a bottle of barbera d'asti which was reasonably priced. I would go again.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMHappy anniversary to usMy husband and I have only been to City House 4n times. Each time it gets better -soon wish we lived closer and could visit more often. The waiters are educated and eloquent. The food is delicious. The environment is cool. We will keep comjng back. Thanks again.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AM5+++ stars!Very cool design and ambience. Interesting and varied menu and wine list. The service was excellent. The food was amazing - every bite was unbelievable and we didn't want the meal to end. And it was very reasonably priced. We'll be back soon and often!4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMHad a great dinner here withHad a great dinner here with my wife. Vibrant atmosphere and the food was unique and delicious. I'd recommend the octopus appetizer. The cocktails were also great. We were visiting Nashville for the weekend and would return here the next time we are in town. I'd recommend you try this restaurant out if you are visiting and would like to have a neat dinning experience.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding service and recommendatOutstanding service and recommendations from the server. We had lots of questions and he was very patient with us. Food was incredible, different, fresh, and interesting. We would go back in a heartbeat! Dessert is a must!4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMCity House is one of the bestCity House is one of the best restaurants I've tried, not just in Nashville.
The menu is so inventive. I didn't even realize I liked some of the foods that are put together in those dishes!
I will definitely go back.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMLoved it. We were there earlyLoved it. We were there early on a Wed and the place was kinda empty... but our service was great / food outstanding, esp the octopus starter and the trout. Great drinks! I'd definitely recommend! The vibe and style of food reminded me of my favorite place in Chicago Nightwood.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMCity House never ceases toCity House never ceases to amaze. The flavors of the food and the staff recommendations are always top notch. The drinks are always a step up from the usual so I like to try new things when taking in a spirit.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent meal and outstandingExcellent meal and outstanding service. Place got a bit loud as it got more crowded. Reservations are a must!4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was great as usual; serviceFood was great as usual; service was really bad though b/c our waitress forgot to turn our order in and so it took forever for us to get our food; she did comp us a dessert; however, in my opinion given how long everything took we should have been given more.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent kickoff for ourExcellent kickoff for our 1-year anniversary celebration getaway!4/11/2013 12:00:00 AMAnother great meal. We broughtAnother great meal. We brought an out-of-town guest, and she thought everything was excellent, from the octopus salad to the chicken entree. Our favorite restaurant in Nashville (or anywhere else, for that matter)!4/10/2013 12:00:00 AMBeing from New York City weBeing from New York City we were surprised and delighted to find exceptionally good food with unusual (dare I say cutting edge) pasta dishes in another city. The thinly sliced salami with peeper corns accompanied by pecorino cheese was superb. The kale salad perfect and the garlic sausage excellent. Also a very nice Montepulciano as an accompaniment. Ambiance was ok but high noise level. But on balance a memorable experience. I would give a highly recommended to anyone who asked.4/8/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent service, fun atmosphere,Excellent service, fun atmosphere, even for a Sunday night. A great neighborhood find. OpenTable, however, didn't have reservations until 8:30 but the place was only half full at 7:30 and we were seated right away so I suggest calling directly! We had a lovely time, nice cocktails, always good.4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMCity House Sunday Dinner, the Best!Had a fantastic Sunday dinner at City House! The menu is certainly different on Sundays but this was an amazing dining experience. We sampled a number of different dishes and each one was wonderful. The liver was quite good; the popcorn was a nice surprise. The chicken wings were really outstanding. You wouldn't think chicken wings could be that remarkable, but they were so well executed, we are still talking about them. Also tried a couple of really good pizzas, especially the potato and red onion. If you haven't tried City House, you simply have to go. This is one of the best places in town.4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMThe pizza is a must. We gotThe pizza is a must. We got one as an appetizer to snack on before the main course. The cocktails are fantastic, interesting twists on some old classics. It's a small menu, but that just means that every item is a great choice.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat, but don't forget the beerThe only complaint I have for City House is that the beer list is small and narrow. Almost all the same type of beer and just very limited. Get just one or two local drafts and it will the perfect way to round out a great drink selection.4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMBrilliant.Love City House. Creative dishes. Great vibe. Great drink selection. This little Italian based restaurant does everything right. The only thing that held me back on a 5 was the service this time. Our waitress seemed a little robotic and out of it. Could have been just an off night and probably was. Other then that. A must go if you're in the Nashville area.4/3/2013 12:00:00 AMWe enjoyed great food in thisWe enjoyed great food in this interesting, historic building. Although the menu is limited, there are enough amazing choices for everyone. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable, their drink menu is great. If you like gin, try a N
Juno.4/1/2013 12:00:00 AMMy best friend was in townMy best friend was in town visiting, so I booked a Monday night reservation for us. We sat in the center room near the open kitchen. It was busy but not crowded. Our server was very helpful, and took the time to answer our (many) questions. Everything that we ordered was delicious. We got the Frico appetizer, an order of the Tri Tips with a side of grits, an order of the Fettucine with sweet potato and a side of succotash, and for dessert we tried both the butterscotch pie and the caramel espresso cake. Everything was SO good. I had the Juno cocktail, which was the perfect mix of gin and grapefruit. It was perfect for a low-key lady date, but would also be excellent for a romantic get-together with your significant other.4/1/2013 12:00:00 AMWe love City House and everyWe love City House and every time we go we are very pleased with the friendliness, food, wine, and overall experience.
