  • "We have been here several times but today the whole experience was horrible. Before my elderly father could get to his chair, the hostess loudly and rudely told him to take off his hat, which he would have done as soon as he got seated. It then took over ten minutes to get water and with a mostly empty restaurant. The best food was the shrimp and grits hands down but the Po'boy and Chicken Salad were not worth ordering. Service was definitely off and it wasn't a very welcoming experience. With all of the great restaurants in town, we will be patronizing those instead. It was a busy weekend with graduation but someone forgot each customer counts. "

  • "Farm to fork freshness and upscale riffs on traditional Southern Cuisine. What a treasure for a small, but charming town. We had and recommend the beet salad with chèvre and crispy greens, the shrimp and grits, the trout over small red beans, a shared desert with drinks. I would go again in a heartbeat if I'm ever in the area again, but would also be tempted to try Chef Currance's other restaurants in Oxford: Bourre and Snackbar"

  • "We had dinner here while visiting Oxford. We were surprised to find our favorite wine on the wine list. Our entrees were superb. The chocolate chess pie was fabulous! I could have eaten an entire pie. My spouse's favorite dessert is a hot fudge sundae. Though not on the menu the staff did not hesitate to make one. A truly wonderful dining experience."

  • "I had been wanting to eat here for a few years. My wife picked this as the spot for our first anniversary dinner and I was impressed. It's somewhat pricey, but the food and service were fantastic. It's not a place I would choose to go very often but it will be great for special occasions."

  • "I had looked forward to this as one of the best restaurants in the South. Unfortunately, I had the shrimp and grits which were so spicy as to make them nearly inedible. There was nothing in the menu which would have led me to believe this to be the case.When the server removed a full plate of food ,no mention was made of my lack of appetite."

  • "Let’s start positive. The food here is really good. Unfortunately, I can’t even remember what I had because the service and comfort of the building was just horrendous. Service here is hit or miss. When they miss it tends to be like an Alabama field goal. This night it started with water arriving late (then never re-filled), an empty cocktail glass that sat on the table until shortly after dessert had begun, no bread, an old wine list from which I was lucky enough to select a bottle they no longer carried, an appetizer for two with no plates, and topped-off with a patronizing waiter who insisted that the dining room was unbearably warm because, “it is an old building”. Funny, it was comfortable last summer when it was 100 degrees outside."

  • "Lovely dining room, but the noise level was excessive and made it extremely difficult to engage in conversation--as well as avoid eavesdropping on the conversations at the other tables because everyone had to speak so loudly. It doesn't help that there's a bar on the second story. The portions were relatively small and, for the price, the food itself was underwhelming. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't exceptional. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful."

  • "Dined in on 3/22. We arrived at 6:20 our reservations were at 6:30. We were seated quickly. Our server's name was Sarah Jane. She was very informative about the menu as well as friendly. She was efficient about refilling our glasses and was attentive. The atmosphere of the restaurant was cozy, not to formal. We started off with the duck confi wontons. For our entrees I had the special it was the New York Strip on top of a bed of mash potatoes topped with pesto and grilled asparagus. I ordered my steak med rare. It was perfect. My husband had the Pork Gallette it to was amazing. We could not stop there as full as we were we had dessert. We had the peanut butter cup and the smore both which were very tasty. We will defiantly be back for more."

  • "The effort to be avant garde and au currant resulted in choosing items on the menu for novelty sake. the author of a dish often does not foresee, that the cook executing the dish may not be of the same culinary caliber. Two examples: the Teres Major meat cut is heralded as a faux filet, but it only works as medaillon cut, where relatively thin slices cut against the grain of the fiber will result in a product acceptable to chew. In this case a whole piece was roasted and simply cut in half, albeit tasty, it was tough to eat. The other item was the pork dish, although conceived with an interesting concept, it is received by the guest as a minced pork chop, not really what you came to dinner for."

  • "Here they serve items that are nothing out of the ordinary, except the price. For example, the whiskey Four Roses, which can be found for about 15 dollars a bottle, is ordered towards the top of the list and sold for 10 dollars a glass. My grits that came with the shrimp tasted like canned cheese had been used in them. My girlfriend's pork was burnt on the outside as well. All in all GO TO BOURE!!!!! its money much better spent and it will be cheaper!"

  • "City Grocery is a gem. The service was outstanding but the noise level made it somewhat difficult to communicate with my friends and the wait staff. It was a very busy night at the restaurant but we were not hurried through our meal. My biggest complaint is the heat of the dish, in particular, shrimp and grits. There was so much cayenne in the grits that it was difficult to taste anything else. The salads were superb as were the drinks. Overall a very nice meal"

  • "but not great. Table for two on a Friday night. The dining area is small and the tables are very close together. The waiters will come and stand in between the 'booth/tables' so that their backside is almost touching your table. We had a seat a couple tables from the front door and the hostess would let patrons stand with both doors open for long enough that the folks sitting near us had to put jackets on to eat. I had the Teres Major and it was very good. The sauce was a little overbearing, but it was was cooked very well. Wife had shrimp and grits and said it was good also."

  • "I have dined at the City Grocery a few times now. I always leave the restaurant with a memorable experience. The service was professional, warm and friendly. More importantly the dinning experience was fun. The casual elegance of this Mississippi restaurant epitomizes southern hospitality. On this visit the chef had just created a new seasonal menu to highlight local and regional ingredients. We shared many new dishes, and everyone in my party enjoyed the variety of dishes and flavors. We also were impressed with a few good-value wines we paired with the food. Cheers! Looking forward to my next visit"

  • "Went here for my after my graduation. The waiter was amazing! Attentive but not annoyingly so. He was very knowledgeable and very friendly. Not only was the staff incredible, the food was awesome! It's expensive so we only go to eat on special occasions (once or twice a year but I am constantly in the bar upstairs on the weekends. Best bar tenders in town.) But, when we do go, we get the full 4 course meal and I have never had anything that wasn't perfect. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a special night out. The bar upstairs is my absolute favorite."
