Diner Reviews
  • "I always have a great time at this place. Great service, amazing crab cakes!"

  • "City Crab is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The food is fresh and delicious. There is always a good buzz whether there for dinner or brunch or if you are just grabbing a drink and a bite at the bar. They offer great value beyond just a really good happy hour -- get on the email list for extra savings."

  • "We were seated up-stairs near the bar and toilet - not such an interesting place to be seated, unless you were interested in following the came on TV. The food was ok, but too pricy compared to size of portion and quality of food."

  • "We came in with a blackboard eats for a free bottle of wine, because I always had assumed the place was more tourists than locals. I thought the food was ok. Pricey, for what it was, but ok. I had the tuna which was good with the sauce it came with. Super bland without the sauce. It would've been nice to know we got a side with our meal. Once the bill was brought we never saw the server again. We thought about having 1 more round of drinks, but clearly that didn't appear to be an option. So I wasn't upset that we went, but probably wouldn't willingly return. Too many other great places in the city."

  • "Fresh fish is a good choice. Tried the crab cakes - - a bit disappointing. Underseasoned, overpriced for what you get. Not what I would expect at a NYC seafood restaurant"

  • "I specifically chose this place with relatively low expectations for an early, reasonably-priced Friday night dinner, so I was pleasantly surprised when my scallops were perfectly cooked, generously portioned, and delicious. Unfortunately, they were served with completely uninspiring side dishes: rice, mashed potatoes, broccoli, or french fries. I chose the rice, thinking it would be the most interesting, but not only was it unseasoned, plain, steamed rice, it was under-cooked and hard. My server replaced it with mashed potatoes, and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, but I think City Crab should consider livening up their side dishes."

  • "I had my husband's surprise birthday party of 13 guests here on 4/5. We were seated on the second floor of the restaurant in the back corner. Due to the location, the lighting of the space was very limited. We were seated in a square shaped table to accomodate 13 people and had 4 candles on the table. Due to the size of the table, 4 candles were not enough to illuminate the space. The waiter gave us 3 more candles and still it was not enough. My sister in law downloaded a flashlight app.on her phone for more light. This was not a good thing, she wasn't able to take pictures. The restaurant needs to put more lighting in this space so their guests don't feel like they are eating in the dark. I was not very pleased with this."

  • "The freshest Long Island Clams! The Buffalo Shrimp was outstanding!"

  • "seafood good, service good,a hot spot but noiselevel can be loud and hard to hear conversations."

  • "Amazing lobster. Seriously, so good. Loved the lobster bisque as well (yes, I got lobster & lobster). The flourless chocolate cake was a great ending to such an amazing meal. Even the bread they serve to begin with is to die for. Service was wonderful and the place was clean, well-decorated and not overly themed, which I very much appreciated."

  • "This is our 4th time here & neither the food nor the service has dissappointed us. The portions are satisfying & the price very reasonable. The service was outstanding even though the past two times we had to kindly ask for our bread basket. And they promptly took care of it. It has become our favorite spot when we're in the Union Square area. We'll definately be returning"

  • "I've lived in NYC for 25 years, so I am no stranger to popular & expensive meet delicious and extraordinary. However this place really couldn't hit the mark. We were seated on the top floor next to the second bar, and our waitress was, for the most part, absent- however I don't blame her since it seemed she had a busy section. Food: At $30-$40 a plate, and boasting about the fresh seafood, I was really expecting something spectacular. Small portions and decent food was the outcome instead. Since this place has been around for awhile, and if you don't mind splurging, you can chance coming here to get that NYC experience, but I much rather spend half the money I did and enjoy better food at Red Lobster."

  • "We hadn't been to City Crab for several years, and found it surprisingly welcoming and a great place to renew ties with old friends and colleagues. I was pleased to see that Miles, the Manager, now worked there. We had known him for many years at SPQR Sal Anthony's in Little Italy's Mulberry St. He was welcoming and charming. We will definitely return to City Crab on a regular basis now that we know he is here. The food and service were both excellent, we were unrushed, and had a great time."

  • "This restaurant has very good seafood but is very dark inside. It's more for a romantic lunch or dinner."

  • "I took my sister here for her birthday. We enjoyed the prix fixe lunch, having the Maine lobster. The lobsters were delicious, a great value. The appetizer was less appealing, a lobster bisque and the mussels. The cheese cake was great! Service was good. The waitress was friendly and gladly responded to our concerns. Overall we had a good dining experience and would go back."

  • "When we entered the bar area was full. We had res. for dinner and was seated immediately. Waitress,& busboys were excellent. Our drink order was taken. We had a carafe of white sangria which was delicish, flavored with pear. Bread basket was brought out immediately. Shared a doz oysters and a doz clams-very fresh. I had mahimahi, bro had swordfish and DH had lobster bake. All were very good. Only small complaint was portion for men were a bit small. For me the portion was just right. Also only came w/one side. They each had dessert. I tasted both and they were good. Very nice dinner. Would definately recommend"

  • "I think I would have enjoyed this restaurant except for where we were seated. With the restaurant over half empty, we were seated on the second floor which was about 95 degrees, dark and empty of other diners - plus had a senior with me who struggled up the stairs but put on a good face! Not much else mattered - good food or service - in the empty and overheated 2nd floor. While I know I could have requested another seat, I am bound by my reviewing responsibilities (2 newspapers and several online sites) to accept what is offered, to ensure my reviews are applicable for the average tourist."

  • "We went to this restaurant last Tuesday evening whilst in New York and was amazed with the food and service. We went specifically for Alaskan King Crab Legs and Maine Lobster and both were superbly cooked and washed down with a lovely Merlot. The starters were equally good and the service was very good. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to others."

  • "the appetizers were awesome and so was the main course. I wasn't too thrilled on the no flour chocolate cake but everything else was great"

  • "I had colleagues in town and, at the last minute, it was hard to find a restaurant that could accomodate 10 people. The food was a big disappointment! Mussels were way over cooked, chewy and dry. So were the clams in the linguine. Fried calamari were OK, nothing special. Lobster mac and cheese were mushy and no flavor. Lobster roll had so much scallion/onion in it that it was hard to taste the actual lobster. Only cold tier, with mixed shellfish was decent, especially the lobster and shrimp. I wouldn't go back! On the bright side, the service was very good! Our waitress, Taryn, was very nice and professional!"

  • "The lobster roll appetizers were to die for! so yummy comparable to Luke's lobster, surprisingly. Nice beer options and great entries. Loved my Shrimp stuffed imperial crab. Delicious! Too full to try dessert! My second time there was lovely."

  • "The food is just ok. But the staff is very friendly, made me feel like they actually cared about my dining experience. There's street parking nearby and no meter at night. Easy to meet friends and have drinks and light dinner."

  • "Restaurant is very very nice. Food is good too. Drinks are slamming. Looking forward to going back. Love that they give you 20% or whatever towards your next visit within a month. As long as drinks stay up I will be back for more."

  • "The food was great, every time I visit this place I spend to much money. The food is so good my girlfriends and I keep ordering more and more."

  • "They are a bit pricey, but the food was amazing! We ordered the swordfish and red snapper (although in hindsight, probably should have gotten the crab stuffed lobster because everyone else who did, it looked amazing!). The fish was perfectly cooked, and swordfish is hard to cook. The sides were okay, not noteable, and we didn't get dessert. all in all, though, if was a delicious meal and very romantic. They even sat us right away because I was on crutches, even though our original table wasn't quite ready. Really nice of them:)"

  • "I'm from Virginia....get to NYC about 6-8 times a year. This is always a must-visit. The food is outstanding, the service just as good, and it's super reasonable, price-wise. One of my favorite restaurants anywhere."

  • "It was hideous for such a nice place. It didn't match the restaurant at all. I recommended This restaurant to some of my friends. I told them about the bathroom not to be alarm."

  • "The food and service was excellent. Unfortunately my glass of wine tasted odd and the area we were seated was quite hot, so although we enjoyed the food, all we wanted to do was leave because it was uncomfortably hot."

  • "Found this via the internet. Food was excellent, server was fabulous and fun. Only raw oysters are offered at lunch, not grilled or stuffed. We didn't want raw, so they fried our oysters. They were the best we have ever had! One person in our group doesn't like oysters and loved these. All seafood was fresh and servings are generous. We will return....a must for those who love fresh seafood with a variety of choices!"

  • "The atmosphere, the set up, and the appetizers were all really great. The restaurant space is impressive and has a fun vibe. The selection of appetizers were terrific, and the Ahi tuna tostada, mini lobster rolls, and lobster Mac 'n cheese did not disappoint. Unfortunately, the entrees were just OK. Not a whole lot if flavor with the mahi mahi, as well as other grilled fish. The shrimp scampi was good though. It still was a fun dinner, though, due to the great atmosphere and the terrific service. Our waiter was both pleasant and very efficient."

  • "We went during Restaurant week, there were 10 of us. I chose the location. Everyone's meal was excellent. Except mine. I was the only one that received an over cooked lobster and warm beer. Everyone else enjoyed their meals. I tasted the crab cakes and they were devine. We were the loud table, so the energy in the room may have come from us! Overall, it was a good night!"
