Diner Reviews
  • "Food was meh. Tomato mozzarella salad too mushy. Pea sprout risotto was tasteless and saturated with stake peas. Service fine. Ambiance too quiet, dark, old style and empty for a place like the Row. Won't go back."

  • "We stayed at Hotel Valencia and thought we'd try the restaurant in the hotel for an elegant, romantic dinner. But the tables are all close to one another, so there was no privacy, and the food was very disappointing. The filet had no flavor itself and depended on a sauce to have flavor. When specifically asked if the crayfish was shelled (i.e. removed from the shell), the waitress said it was, and then it was delivered in the shell. With so many restaurant alternatives at Santana Row, I would have expected this to be better. It was a wasted dining opportunity. The seats were so uncomfortable, we didn't stay for dessert, either."

  • "It was nice and easy getting a reservation for a Saturday night. My salmon was cooked perfectly"

  • "We like appetizer more than entree.. but overall it's good food and dining experience."

  • "This was my second time dining at citrus and I've been pleased with it both times. Helpful wait staff and GREAT food."

  • "Celebrated a friend's birthday here on a week night. Neither of us had been here before and enjoyed this restaurant in the Valencia hotel. The dishes were creative and nicely presented. I had the wild salmon and my friend had the seared tuna. Both delicious. Service was excellent. Ambiance great, especially for conversation. Overall a good dinner and I highly recommend this restaurant in Santana Row."

  • "Good Food - sauce on the hanger steak was good, ribeye was good. Great service. Wine list not updated as to year offered on line and in the restaurant. Expected a 92 pt wine. Could have brought one from home even with the $25 cork fee since it was anniversary dinner. Other than that (should have called to make sure) everything was fine."

  • "The service was really lacking. after we were seated, we sat for about 10 minutes before anyone can to table. the hostess vey loudly said there would be a corkage for the champagne I had brought which I knew because I called ahead. The waiter forget the first course of on our guests which was awkward. the salmon was fine but the accompanying noodles were very very salty.. the waiter made a mistake pouring the champagne and it did it very unevenly. I will not return again."

  • "Menu just changed, and not for the better in my opinion. Had the buttermilk chicken, came on the bone and had barely any meat on it. Surprisingly limited wine list. Used to take large groups here for company dinners, as it is fairly private and every menu choice was really good. Also, it has a really nice courtyard which they need to take more advantage of for diners."

  • "this is our second time at Citrus and it was about the same as the first experience. Food is very ordinary and nothing to note at all. Our waiter was friendly and attentive but the overall experience was not great"

  • "Nothing great about this place. It's located in a popular and vibrant location of Santana Row. The food was ok, nothing to rave about. Definitely check out V-bar but skip the Citrus restaurant. You can find better food elsewhere in Santana Row. "

  • "We ordered a salad and an entree. We waited at least 30 minutes for the salad and about Two minutes later our entree arrived. They said they could hold it for us but when they came back it was cold. We ordered the flap steak which tasted fine but the potatoes & veggies were totally tasteless. I expected more from a restaurant of this caliber."

  • "My husband and I went there to have dinner on a Saturday. The atmosphere and services were nice. The steak we ordered was pretty good. The fish that we got was not that tasty because it was burned at the bottom. Other than that, over all it was not bad."

  • "The perfect weather invited us to dine outside. Our waiter Eric was GREAT. Friendly - knowledgeable - with a taste of fun.....aka perfect. His recommendation for wine was right on - a fantastic zinfandel.....the two appetizers we had were mouth-watering and fresh. The entrees were simple yet delicious. My husband's birthday was acknowledged with a complimentary egg-nog brûlée which he couldn't stop raving about. The venue, weather, waiter, wine and food together gave us the perfect evening out."

  • "My wife and I dined at Citrus for the first time and were very pleasantly surprised. The food was outstanding, the decor very pleasant and the noise level low enough to carry on a conversation with ease. We split an heirloom tomato salad (the kitchen was kind enough to split it for us) and had the ahi tuna and the wild salmon. Both were perfectly prepared and delicious. The waiter was very helpful in describing the dishes. We recommend this restaurant whole heartedly."

  • "We came for restaurant week and I was very pleased with the overall feel/decor. The busser was rather gruff and unsmiling but our server started off strong and was polite (however we had to strain to find him for refills when our cocktail was empty). The booth we were seated at was lovely but we could hear every detail of the tacky conversation from the table next to us. An overall good first impression."

  • "Four of us ate inside at citrus....Two of us ordered the bbq pork cutlet and told the waiter not to overcook the pork....What we got was a large pork loin which was sliced in 3/8" slices....IT WAS SO OVERDONE IT WAS LIKE EATING A DRIED PIECE OF MEAT....Thew only thing that saved the few pieces I ate was the aisan (soy) sauce served on the side and you could dip a piece of meat in it for some moisture.....Also, the rice was very undercooked and was very crunchy....I will never go back or recommend Citrus to friends...John"

  • "Have you ever had raw abalone? Visit Citrus and enjoy this absolute delight. We also had perfectly seared scallops before sadly leaving and "dinner hopping" down the row. Our server, Manuel was also wonderful. We'll be back."

  • "My husband and I had the most wonderful dinner at Citrus. We had the special prefixed menu, and the 5 course meal was AMAZING!! The dishes were exotic...ranging from grilled oyster shooters to skate wing with abalone to miso braised oxtail, to name a few. The dessert was also extremely decadent. We even got complimentary champagne! Service was perfect and we were very impressed."

  • "Thank you for the wonderful experience on Valentine's day. Our server was very polite and attentive to our needs. We received complementary champagne due to the slight wait which was very short. Our only complaint was that the sauce used on the ribeye plate was extremely salty. The overal meal was almost perfect, and the dining experience was one of the best we have ever had."

  • "Citrus offered an escape from the crazy Santana row noisy crowds & crowded restaurants. It was nice, quite, relaxing. The Filet we had was cooked perfectly, wine was great, service was great too. Would go again."

  • "The service was very good. It was Christmas eve and the place was nearly deserted. The food unfortunately was a disappointment. While the short ribs were tasty and tender the polenta was bland and tasteless. The mushroom risotto was a big surprise. It was salad macaroni instead of the familiar risotto. The waitperson was charming and attentive. I think we must of been there on an off night."

  • "we chose citrus for dinner because it was one of the only restaurants open on Christmas that was in a nice area. The restaurant is on the 3rd floor of the Valencia hotel with a beautiful courtyard. The food was very good. The restaurant is beautiful but it was pretty noisy for a restaurant that was only about a third full. Maybe it was because it was Christmas but I didn't think that the service was up to par. the wait staff was very pleasant just slow. In all fairness I would have to give them another try on a non holiday evening to see how the restaurant really measures up."

  • "Citrus is a good choice for someone looking for quieter, more romantic place for dinner. There was no rush, the ambiance was good, as was the meal."

  • "Citrus is located in the Valencia Hotel, in the heart of San Jose's new up-scale shopping and dining district .. Santana Row .. They have "cubicles" of sorts .. which enclose your table on three sides, and separated from other areas by chain "veils" that give you a wonderful sense of privacy, and VERY quiet and romantic. The service was a little too leisurely for me, but others who wished to spend more time dining might have found it just fine. It was a wonderful evening and I recommend "Citrus" to all. They currently have a Wednesday special, where all wine is 50% off when purchased by the bottle. http://www.hotelvalencia-santanarow.com/citrus.htm"

  • "Our waiter was professional and very attentive. Food was average. Nothing special. I liked that menu was short, but food preparation was not something you would expect from such restaurant and prices. I expected more."

  • "Appetizers were delicious. We got the tuna tartare and diver scallops, we could have eaten those all night! For the entree, I got the filet of beef, medium rare, and it almost melted in my mouth. Others got the pasta, seared tuna, and seabass, and they said it was quite good as well."

  • "Once you actually find the restaurant (I had to ask the hotel staff to find it), you find a quiet, reserved ambiance with a surprisingly few guests for a Friday evening at 6:45PM. Given that the hopping hotspot bar is across the courtyard, the restaurant may get more busy late in the evening. Citrus provides a measured dining experience (as in, not rushed). Fortunately, every dish is worth the wait. Even the bread is served with a butter infused with orange olive oil that adds a unique and pleasant taste. Appetizer flavors were complex and delightful, and all the main courses, from short ribs to whitefish to rack of lamb were excellent and interesting in their presentation and taste. Overall prices reasonable, ~$50/person w/wine."

  • "A very pleasant, enjoyable dining experience. Compact menu, lots of beef, some chicken / fish / vegetarian dishes. All well-prepared. Knowledgeable and helpful waiters."

  • "Great space and nice menu. Service was excellent and they are very attentive to people with dietary restrictions (gluten, dairy etc). Wine list by the glass is limited. The Brussels sprouts were under cooked and so where the bean in the lamb dish (chef should taste before sending to table). Would be nice to add Almond milk to serve as non-dairy with coffee. Will try them again."

  • "Dinner started with very fresh hot sourdough rolls with a unique and delicious crock of butter topped with blood orange olive oil and grated orange zest. My salmon had perfectly crispy skin and moist meat and came with pistachio tahini, Israeli couscous and roasted black garlic. My guest had the chef’s special, Korean short ribs that were braised, then battered and fried, kind of Korean BBQ meets tempura. It was creative and delicious. We really appreciated the innovative food and use of wonderful ingredients. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of the dishes, and the service was excellent. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the perfect setting for an enjoyable dinner."
