We are now hosting special popup dinners on Mondays. Please note the regular citizens band menu is NOT available on our Monday popup dinners. Please contact the restaurant for more information.

Fusing white tablecloth caliber food with the comfort and style of a diner, Citizen's Band dials in on American classics in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood. Salvaged furniture gives the space a comfortable, lived-in feel, and vintage CB radios and postcards lend an old but new vibe to the 40-seat fine diner.

I found Citizens Band with a quick neighborhood search and I am so glad that I found it. I had no idea that it was a 5 min walk from my apartment, but now that I know I intend to become a regular. The burger was absolutely the best one that I have ever had...order it medium with the egg on top and it melted in my mouth. Every bite was a flavor explosion and I somehow managed to finish the entire thing pretty darn quickly. The garlic fries were the perfect match for the burger and I ate every last morsel. If the food weren't enough, the service was awesome despite it being very busy. I will be back...over and over again.

Food and wine was just okay, wouldn't go back on my own but also wouldn't be opposed to going back if someone else wanted to try it. The service was a little slow.

Great food and service! So creative. Loved the vegetarian main course (pesto couscous, roasted tomatoes, broccoli, purple, green and white cauliflower, zucchini shaved super thin and all so delicious and perfectly cooked. Husband loved the tuna (perfectly seared, served with an interesting mix of vegetables and bits of lobster). Friends had grilled cheese and tomato soup. Loved it. We liked wine/drink choices. Super friendly and attentive waitstaff. Reasonable price. Next time we want to try the burger and fries. Seems as if a lot of people ordered that. Only slight negative - music was on the loud side. But that's probably more a reflection of our age/music and volume preference. Great experience. Will be back.

We have eaten here a few times over the years. The first time was the best. The service has always been very good; friendly and professional. The food was good but I remember it as better. The facility needs a refresh. The wine list was the highlight. Interesting, priced well and a fun way to explore new things.

Love the diner feel with food that was great. Mac and cheese, burgers and fries all received high marks from a very picky group of friends. Wine list is long. Asked for the biscuit on the side from Pinkies. Made my night. Carrot cake from Pinkies bakery finished off the night.

After reviewing the menu and reading some reviews I went to Citizens Band with high expectations. What I would say after my meal the concept was good however the food and service was average. If you lived within walking distance it would be a fine neighborhood establishment. If you need to travel I would say you can find better places to dine.

Service was nice. Cute hole in the wall, but the Food was Poor! We had the pork and the fried chicken. Both were very bland! Needed more seasoning. The fried chicken sauce was horrible and the little gem salad was nit fresh and caused us both upset stomachs and nausea!

  • Yet ANOTHER ridiculously long wait
    FoodiesRAnnoying
    Dined on 7/12/2014
This last visit to Citizen Band will be my last. We were assured twice after very long waits that our orders were en route. All the while, people who were seated after we had placed our orders were receiving their food. The table next to us had eaten through appetizers, main course and dessert. That's how long we waited. After hunting down our waitress and asking where our food was, we were told a third time that it was coming. Asking to speak with the manager yields very little as apparently he was behind the stove himself--we couldn't have our complaint delay our meal any further. To top it off, the food wasn't worth the wait. To be fair, though, having an insane wait time as your appetizer can turn even the finest dish sour.

I chose "Citizen's Band" restaurant based on a listing I found in my Palace Hotel room. (I cannot remember if it was "Where" magazine or not.) Citizen's Band was recommended as having wonderful fried chicken, which it does! However, my husband and I were a little uncomfortable with the neighborhood; the restaurant sits diagonally across from a leather apparel store (and I don't mean Western wear). Also, the people walking up and down the streets were a little questionable. The food, though, was great! Fried chicken was superb and risotto and tuna very good. French fries were among the best we've ever tasted!

Hey there, I went to Citizen's Band on a date and had never seen it before, but it is a precious gem. The Mac-n-Cheese onion ring tower is delicious to share as a starter. I had the cheeseburger with an egg and carmelized onions which was simply delicious. Great casual dinner option!

Great place, was easy to find, service was awesome. Had the steak, it was delicious and very moist. However, it is kind of a whole in the wall and comes off as a bit of a dive, especially since they share a bathroom with the club/bar next door. So I wouldn't bring parents there. But the food was great and everything seemed clean. If you aren't too up tight, would definitely recommend.

The dishes at Citizens Band are cross the line comfort food. That line is the limit of how much butter and deep-fat frying is enjoyable. Something was off tasting in the batter, making the tradeoff of delicious for fats wasn't worth it.

Mac and Cheese w/ Onion Rings on top were delish! Burger and fries were good. Strawberry Lemonade w/ Vodka could've had a bit more vodka, but it was still a delicious and refreshing beverage. I already know what I'm going to order the next time I visit- I can't wait to try the Fried Chicken and Poutine.

I've been here several times because the food is very tasty. However their ventilation system needs an upgrading. It was very smoky when we were there last. It could have been due to the rain outside but that shouldn't happen. Otherwise, it's a fun kitschy place with a great menu.

We really enjoyed our meal at Citizen's Band. The hamburger was fantastic - as was the trout enjoyed by my partner. The only complaints are that the restaurant is very hard to find - dark area with no real signage - we walked by it at least 3 times; and - at least with the trout - there was not a lot of food. It would be nice to have some bread or something to start out the meal.

Service was great and friendly!! Food was plated well and looked delicious. Upon entering my mouth though, it was just meh.... Fried chicken was relatively flavorless, the slow cooked beef short rib wasnt particularly tender or flavorful as slow cooked would normally imply, the pork loin was tougher than it looked and also lacking flavor... this is coming from someone who tends to think most restaurants over salts stuff... so the food here was very lacking in the flavor dept... Fried chicken from Popeyes is better.

The inside is diner-like. The menu isn't large, but oh my, is the food good. We started with the carmelized cauliflower and were not disappointed. I had a delicious pork sirloin with chorizo and clams. It was outstanding. The hamburger that was served to an adjacent table looked huge and juicy. My wife had the vegetarian plate (vegetables), and it was a beautiful presentation with perfectly cooked vegetables. With two glasses of wine, and tip, the bill was $85. I highly recommend this gem of a restaurant. This food is worthy of some of the best spots in the City. Check it out.

This restaurant serves good, hearty fare, but does it with flare. The fried chicken was GREAT, but what surprised me was how tasty were the sauteed greens served with it. Even at my age, eating green veggies is often done out of "duty" (I know I SHOULD eat this, so I will), but these were delicious, not wilted, a bit of snap, a nice spicy bite. I had the fried chicken; light, crunchy the meat was tender without being at all greasy. My GF had the Cream of Tomato soup and grilled chesse, and she LOVED it, Of note .... they do NOT put salt/pepper on the table... this is not an oversight, it is a statement about how well they have seasoned your food. The venue is casual, prices are moderate, portions sizes are well thought out.

Nice place that seems to follow the "New American" trend in SF lately. Does everything well, but not spectacular, with such staples as Mac n' Cheese, Fried Chicken, and Burgers. Imagine an "Upscale Diner" concept, and you'll get the idea. Other choices (Marlowe, Blue Plate, Slow Club, Front Porch, FarmerBrown, etc...) may be better food for the money. Short, well curated wine list is particularly good (excellent Pinot).

Fried chicken and hambergers are excellent and always on the menu. Other entries are just as good, but regularly change. The overall style is American with touches of southern and dollops of comfort food. E.g., had the grits and shrimp a while back which was wonderful and the mac and cheese is always amazing. Salads are good to for lunch or with dinner. Desserts are probably good as they are made at Pinky's Bakery, an affiliate located next door. Lastly, the wine selection is reasonable and eclectic. They also carry my favorite beer: Jamaica Red Ale by Mad River Brewing.
