A word from Circo
Circo offers upscale Italian fare built upon a foundation of signature Tuscan recipes from the kitchen of Maccioni matriarch Egidiana and prepared by Executive Chef Alfio Longo. The menu is served in a lively, sophisticated setting reminiscent of the old-style European circus tents which inspired the restaurant's name.

"When we opened Circo in 1996, our business plan was simple, Dad's Hospitality, Mom's Food, run by the sons."

Bright blue circus rings suspended with gold stars, sculptures of monkeys swinging near overhead, playful clowns dancing above the open kitchen and a ceiling hung with tapestries & trapezes all reinforce the vibrant circus theme.

Diner Reviews
  • "I always choose this restaurant when attending a performance at City Center, and have never been disappointed. This Wednesday was unusually quiet because of our ungodly early curtain--7 PM. We shared the Frito Misto antipasto, plenty for two. The food seemed especially good. Also, I had a delicious cocktail, the Mulberry something. You need more categories in the #2 question! The restaurant is really better than my one-checked-item would suggest."

  • "It was a busy night yet we were seated immediately. The staff were attentive, friendly yet unobtrusive. The food was excellent italian cuisine. We enjoyed the squid ink pasta with shrimp and calamari and the bolognese and they were both delicious. The spinach was the only thing that was unimpressive. Dessert was creme brûlée which was a delight to the palate and a generous portion."

  • "We had a very enjoyable evening with another couple at Circo. The food was very good. I would say that the portions are small compared to the price but everything was delicious. It was quite crowded and somewhat noisy but my meal was wonderful, especially the "special" dessert - a tasting sampler with chocolate mousse, panna cotta and a little chocolate cake. Yum! Food presentation is beautiful."

  • "As always some of the best service in NY. Food is good. No complaints. But not exceptional."

  • "This resturant was nice, the food good as well as attentive staff-- although the space was too cramped. Too many tables to close together, where we ate, the staff had to help pull the table in and out so you could sit down."

  • "The restaurant has a kitchen problem. The kitchen is not capable of meeting a theatre crowd rush. The waiter was slow getting to us and when we finally did order it took close to 50 minutes to get the main course ( we did not have appetizers.0 When we complained , we were essentially told that we were the problem because we ordered late. We had no time for coffee and dessert. There was no apology, no effort to speed thing along. We were given a small scope of sherbert and two cookies and snidely told that we had more than enough time for dessert so why were we complaining. The management's attitude was rude and critical of the customers."

  • "We had the nicest time. We went after seeing a great play at Manhattan Theater Club across the street at City Center. We were greeted warmly and that was the beginning of a lovely evening. We all had the rack of lamb which we all agreed was the best we ever had. The wine list is very extensive and a reasonably priced bottle of Italian Cabernet was recommended and it was delicious. It was also a birthday celebration and the honoree was presented with her desert with a candle and a decorated plate. It all could not have been nicer. We highly recommend Circo!"

  • "Food, service, wine all excellent! Sommelier very knowledgeable too"

  • "All the food was outstanding. This is a nice reliable and filling restaurant that you won't regret. Decor is circus themed so it's not romantic but it was still a nice evening with husband and wife."

  • "We go to Circo every time we attend a performance at City Center or Manhattan Theatre Club. Their price fiixed dinner offers excellent choices."

  • "Had a great evening out. Staff was amazing. So attentive. Made us feel like we were the only guest dinning in the restaurant."

  • "The menu is traditional Italian and you'll like everything on the menu so you'll probably have trouble deciding what to eat. It's well prepared too. The service is friendly and efficient. In the summer they have a great outdoor space in front of the restaurant that still feels really private."

  • "Circo's menu goes beyond the typical Italian with unique choices. Good wine list with fairly priced bottles so you can go regularly - not just for special occasions. Decor always gives a smile."

  • "Wonderful attention to detail with consistently delicious dining!"

  • "We went for dinner on a Friday night. The setting is nice and somewhat whimsical. Good location. The food itself however was very mediocre. I ordered sea bass and frankly it looked liked cod and smelled and tasted fishy and dried out. The plate was steamy hot and the fish at best luke warm; perhaps it was pre-cooked and then shoved in the microwave. My husband had a pasta pomodora dish that he described as very ordinary. Dessert was good. Service fine. I don't think we'll be going back anytime soon."

  • "We had a very good dinner at Circo before going to City Center to see the Martha Graham Dance Committee. We ordered the pre theater dinner, which was very good value."

  • "We ordered off the menu they had for the "Black Kale Festival" only to receive sub-par food, and dishes that showed no originality. Our waitress was inattentive and did not know what wines that were brought for the wine pairing. I was not blown away by any aspects of the restaurant and believe that there are many other options in the city that have more inventive food for a lower cost."

  • "Joined a friend for lunch and we both chose from the price fixe menu. The menu always has wonderful options - the price is right but more importantly the food is delicious. I've not had a bad meal, ever, at Circo. The Maitre de is always pleasant when seating you, the staff is also very attentive during the course of your meal."

  • "My colleagues and I enjoyed lunch there on Thursday. We all ordered prex-fixe menu, 3-course at $28. That was very good deal and you won't be disappinted!! The portion was big enough and was very tasty. I had salmon for appetizer, chicken for main and apple tart. I love and enjoyed all of my dishes and so did my colleagues. I will definitely go back there soon."

  • "A pleasant place to come back to in the future. Even though we went on a Friday night during a recent Restaurant Week, we got a nice welcome, never felt rushed and had a very nice meal. Admittedly, we went a bit off the prix fixe selection, but saw the same level of service to those who stuck with the RW menu. Am always looking for an order of great Clams Casino, so tried it here. My only disappointment."

  • "I'm not good with reviews other than checking the appropriate boxes (they say everything I normally like to say), BUT I just want to give a shout out to our waiter, Maitre 'd, I really wish I could have gotten their names! I accidently left my theatre tickets at the offices and the Maitre 'd allowed me to go and print in their office. Above and beyond the norm! We will definitely be going back."

  • "Original decor. Helpful staff. Omfortable wall table. Enjoyed branzino, both whole and filleted, as well as Rest.Week Prix fixe. Excellent bottle of California Medoc. We'll be back"

  • "Circo is a circus-themed restaurant, with a lot of design elements and decor that make it look like you're dining in a big circus. The circus theme is done in a half-hearted, underwhelming way, though, as it's awkwardly dovetailed with a more modern aesthetic, and the result is neither fish nor fowl, but a kind of half and half hybrid, not really one or the other. The wait staff was lethargic, and the food, while flavorful, was served in overly small portions that fit a tasting menu better than a real one. Still and all, it's a nice establishment, but it could really use a shot in the arm to go all the way in either one design direction or the other, augment its portion sizes, and give its wait staff some highly caffeinated coffee."

  • "The chicken was not special, without much flavor. The chicken pate seemed to be missing a few ingredients. The better part of the meal was the apple tart, although it required a knife to cut thru the dessert. I may try again in 5-10 years after the chefs have rotated out. Colorful ambience and excellent waiters."

  • "We ate a late in the day lunch from the prix fixe menu. The food was abundant and delicious. The service was friendly and attentive. The decor of the restaurant was unusual -- a circus theme -- but tastefully and colorfully done. Overall, a most enjoyable experience. We will return."

  • "Whimsical decorations, all in a circus mode, delicious food and attentive, prompt and gracious service. Great menu for Restaurant Week with fish, pasta/vegetarian and meat dishes. There was something delicious for everyone. My only complaint was the exorbitant drink charge: $28 for a small amount of a 12 year unblended scotch (one can buy more than half an entire bottle for that price, it is simply exploitation.)"

  • "My wife and I dinned at Circo on March 1'st before the theater, arriving at 6:00pm to ensure we had enough time not to be rushed. I fully understand that this is a busy time for restaurants in the theater district, but things were more hectic than I would expect for an establishment of this reputation and price point. Service was spotty, although acceptable, but certainly not friendly. With that said, the food was teriffic, and we will likley return, but not for pretheater - which is too bad because it is just steps from our building."

  • "Had dinner here restaurant week we were 5 people (all women) 2 in our party ordered from Prefix menu 3 did not. All of the meals were prepared fresh and were very good. All items on menu are a la cart. A dinner with an appetizer or a salad and a cocktail can be a bit pricey. I don't mind paying a little more for a good meal and good service which is what we got here but the pasta portion size was a bit lacking. If it were being served to a man. he would most probably leave hungry. Don't know that I would return here if I were with my husband especially since there are so many places to choose from in the area. Pasta is inexpensive, the lack of it would make me suggest another place if I was out to dinner with men in our party."

  • "The food was very good and service was responsive and quick. The circus theme to the restaurant is a little odd but didn't generally take away from the experience."

  • "We had their NY restaurant week menu. No disappointment, unlike other restaurants."
    Dined on 2/27/2014
  • "This neighborhood restaurant seems to have lost its ability to be responsive to customers. It was indeed a three ting circus, and who'd want to go there to relax and visit with friends? Primarily, our waiter spoiled the evening for me. He was sullen, disinterested, uncommunicative. Add in too much noise and food that was no better than "okay", and I have to ask: Why run this risk again??"

  • "This is a great restaurant on the edge of the theatre district without the crush of theatre goers…an easy walk to most venues. Good and very reliable food…."

  • "This restaurant is truly a circus and is fit for KIDS ONLY. If you want a serious dining experience or a romantic evening, then avoid this place like the plague."

  • "Excellent classic Italian food. Exceptional service!"
    Dined on 2/13/2014
  • "Even though the tables near the bar give you an easy exit to leave, the crush of people and the trouble the servers have to get to the tables make it a difficult place to be for dinner, especially pre-theater."
