A word from Circo
Circo offers upscale Italian fare built upon a foundation of signature Tuscan recipes from the kitchen of Maccioni matriarch Egidiana and prepared by Executive Chef Alfio Longo. The menu is served in a lively, sophisticated setting reminiscent of the old-style European circus tents which inspired the restaurant's name.

"When we opened Circo in 1996, our business plan was simple, Dad's Hospitality, Mom's Food, run by the sons."

Bright blue circus rings suspended with gold stars, sculptures of monkeys swinging near overhead, playful clowns dancing above the open kitchen and a ceiling hung with tapestries & trapezes all reinforce the vibrant circus theme.

Diner Reviews
  • "From the refolding of our napkins whenever we left our table to the explosion of rustic Italian flavors, Circo was a magical Italian experience. The circus theme was translated throughout the flavor of our food and the execution of our service with small unexpected surprises and intrigues. I loved the atmosphere and the fanciful decor and my daughters and I had a magical time!"

  • "We were a party of 3 and sat toward the back when a party of 15 showed up. We spent the rest of the conversation yelling across our table . Hands down I would go again, but if you see a large group coming your way, it's about to get noisy."

  • "Circo never disappoints - starting with the warm welcome from the most charming Maitre d', to the wonderful wait staff and most beautifully plated and delicious food - all in the crisp décor reminiscent of the "big tent" of the circus - it is a wonderful experience. The squid ink pasta, impeccably al dente, with its topping of delicately prepared seafood, was a most wonderful start, but each course was delicious in its own right. Even their turn on fresh fruit dessert. All wonderful. I love this place. The bonus - this was all on the Restaurant Week menu no less."

  • "By chance we chose this restaurant. Wonderful Italian food! Things on the menu that I haven't seen in any other places. Very, very good."

  • "We dined at Circo last Saturday night and had an excellent dining experience. The food exceeded our expectations and the pace of service was perfect. We definitely plan to return."

  • "Right across the street from the City Center is this marvelous restaurant. Food is terrific, service is attentive but not pushy and the bartender makes a fine martini. This was our fourth time at Circo and I have yet to find fault with the place."

  • "Food and service are always amazing.... Bruno, the Maitre D', runs the place impeccably and never a miss at any time... in either food or service"

  • "Outstanding authentic Italian food. Delicious pasta, freshly made. Branzino is light and delicious. Petto Di Pollo (chicken paillard) is simple, tender and tasty. Gamberoni Pietrasanta is a wonderful shrimp entree -- succulent and sweet. The Cesari Amarone is a wonderful wine that complements virtually any food choice. Finish off the meal with a scrumptious gelato affogato, and you won't be sorry! We are regulars at the restaurant, as we live in the neighborhood, and we sometimes even bring our dog, weather permitting!! In addition to seeing us, you might also run into Tony Bennett, Barbara Walters, or any number of celebrities who frequent the place. It's also a great restaurant for business lunches. We love it, and you'll love it too!"

  • "The food and service were first rate. The prix fixe dinner menu is a terrific and the wait staff was sensitive to diners who may have been attending shows after dinner. The décor was whimsical."

  • "If I could only eat in one restaurant the rest of my life it would be CIRCO. My favorites: carpaccio di Manzo (raw filet mignon, thinly sliced) - the best I have had anywhere. Grilled octopus. I have had several variations, each better than the prior one. Pasta? Pici - homemade Tuscan pasta, hand rolled or (more often on the menu) Chiatarra (pressed and then cut by rolling over stretched guitar strings) - either in a plain pomodoro and basiico sauce with a duck or veal ragout. INCREDIBLE. Main- Branzino in salt crust ( roasted and with the salt removed for serving). This fare is from Tuscany, so the steaks are outrageous. A wine list to die for. All this with impeccable service. Can't you tell why I love this place?"

  • "We were looking for a place to eat close to Manhattan Theatre Club...and noticed the prix fixe menu at Circo, right across the street. Good selection for all three courses, and all met or exceeded our expectations. Very friendly waitstaff, pleasant environment."

  • "We enjoy Circo and eat there as frequently as possible. We happen to be in the area on Saturdays for lunch. But, alas, they do not open for lunch on Saturdays. We wish the would change that pattern."

  • "We chose to eat outside. Hence, the noise level was up and the service not as attentive as if we had dined inside."

  • "Recently went for lunch with a party of five. As always, service was great and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their appetizer, entrée and dessert selection. If you are mid-town and don't know where to dine, Circo has a great menu selection and everything they prepare is visually appealing and tastes delicious."

  • "Look forward to dining again very soon! Staff very accomodating, food excellent, cheers to great drinks!"

  • "But very slow service, too many customers or too few waiters"
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "The food was good at Circo but the service was very inconsistent. We must have had 6 different waiters, bus persons and managers at our table during lunch. But when we needed pepper - we could not find anyone. Same for coffee with dessert - they forgot !"

  • "Circo is amongst the finest restaurants in NYC. Circo is the penultimate Tuscan restaurant. Their carpaccio is consistently the best I have experienced. Pasta! Oh my! Whether with a ragu or (my favorite) pomodoro and basilico, the al dente pasta is superb. Try the chittara - or, even better - pici, if they have it. The chittara is a rolled out over guitar strings, which "cut" the pasta into strips. This the name. Main- the branzino in crusto (salt crust)is my favorite. The salt (in egg whites) locks in the Flavors but is removed prior to serving. But last night we had the duck and the veal Milanese. Also notable are their wonderful Tuscan steaks. What a treat!"

  • "This was our 2nd time at Circo. We remembered how good the food was and how well located the restaurant was after our matinee with MTC. The food was even more impressive this time. After perfectly mixed cocktails, we chose a delicious white wine, the flambe shrimp in a honey glaze. My husband selected veal picatta with a side of fried artichokes. We shared creme brule for dessert. To add to our superb dining experience, the air was filled with excitement as Italy played the World Cup adding fun while the hostess gave diners beads and soccer balls to heighten the exuberance of the game being watched in the bar."

  • "We are patrons of MTC and eat at Circo whenever we have a performance. I have eaten salmon there many times and each time it is prepared differently, and unusually prepared, and original.Their price-fixe menu is outstanding with original dishes every time. The food is outstanding and i have never had a bad meal there"

  • "Circo continues to be a wonderful place for a comfortable and tasty meal. The orange duck slices are tender and delicious. The pasta is home made, cooked perfectly each time. The white clam sauce was especially good. The Maître D' Bruno is always attentive to assure you are happy with your care. I will return here many times."

  • "During our visit to NYC we found this restaurant by chance, but liked it so much that we returned. Good atmosphere, good service, good wine & food. Their "prix fixe" is worth the price. We recommend it! "

  • "I go to Circo several times a year. It is my "go to" place for pretty much any occasion. The food, the service is by far the best in the city. What is nice, they remember you. That makes your dining experience even more special."

  • "Went there for lunch before Broadway show. Food was good. Water refills and busing of table done in timely manner. Stared with one waiter who took order but then disappeared. Finished with another waiter filling in while original waiter took care of other tables ( not classy) Prices were very high for value and portion size. But what can you expect in NYC. "

  • "A bit touristy but plenty if locals too. Ravioli alla nonnative exceptional. Sautéed veal somewhat dry but good quality we were six and all enjoyed it . Margaret's too weak and sweet. Changed ion request."

  • "We had an incredible dinner at Circo; the outside patio was romantic, the food was delicious from appetizer to dessert, and the service impeccable. We will definitely come back when we are in New York again!"

  • "Rediscovered Circo recently and it was as excellent as I remembered. We've been twice in the last month and will gladly visit again on our next visit to NYC. The fried zuchinni was amazing and the risotto to die for. I would highly recommend giving it a try. So glad to have found it again!"
    Dined on 5/25/2014
  • "If the food is Poor which it surprisingly was here, the whole experience is ruined for us. SO although the service was lovely and the ambiance charming, nothing makes up for bad food (ill conceived recipes, main dishes all over cooked, commercial bread sticks, flavorless sorbets and gelatos)"
    Dined on 5/21/2014
  • "One of the best dining experiences in NY. The food is delicious, the staff is on top of everything, and the setting is delightful. The unfailing attention to detail and desire to please are gracefully executed. Simply superb."

  • "My wife and I dined at Circo last week to celebrate our 10th anniversary. It was superb...even better that our previous visit there! The table service and help in wine selection were every bit as excellent as the food, and we'll go back again next time we're in the City."

  • "Circo never disappoints. Whether I'm there for lunch, dinner or after theater, Circo is always the best choice for excellent Italian food and a buzzy, but not too noisy ambiance. And now that the weather is warm, the outdoor dining terrace is a plus. "

  • "We had a delightful dinner at Circo. We asked to share an appetizer and the kitchen prepared it so it was easily split in two. The flavors of the main course - rabbit with vegetables - were so clear and delicious that it obviously took great skill to prepare. The service was excellent, as was the wine. We were able to avoid the pre-theater rush, which we recommend, as the ambience changes when that crowd rushes out and the more relaxed dinner crowd arrives. We will certainly go back."
