A word from Circo
Circo offers upscale Italian fare built upon a foundation of signature Tuscan recipes from the kitchen of Maccioni matriarch Egidiana and prepared by Executive Chef Alfio Longo. The menu is served in a lively, sophisticated setting reminiscent of the old-style European circus tents which inspired the restaurant's name.

"When we opened Circo in 1996, our business plan was simple, Dad's Hospitality, Mom's Food, run by the sons."

Bright blue circus rings suspended with gold stars, sculptures of monkeys swinging near overhead, playful clowns dancing above the open kitchen and a ceiling hung with tapestries & trapezes all reinforce the vibrant circus theme.

This gorgeous and delightful restaurant is always a pleasure. We have gone many times and never been disappointed. This is upscale Italian with a light and sophisticated hand, creative plays on traditional dishes and seasonal specialities. Service is perfect with attentive and well informed staff. The manager is always there keeping an eye on things. I also think this is one of the most beautiful restaurants in town with its fanciful and colorful circus design.

We have been to Circo several times and have always enjoyed the food, service and ambiance. This time something was lacking. The service was good, but the food fell short of satisfaction. The atmosphere didn't seem as warm either. Too bad we left with a void ...........

The decor is interesting with grotesque circus characters. The food was the best Italian food we had in NYC on our four-night visit. We went to two other Italian restaurants where the food was mediocre. So we were very pleasantly surprised by Circo. We spit a salad which came very prettily presented on two plates with delicious crackers placed carefully at an angle on top. I had the squid ink pasta with seafood and my wife had the ricotto stuffed ravioli. Both were excellent in their own way, the ravioli mild and the seafood al dente with a wonderful chopped up seafood sauce, not too spicy at all. This doesn't sound earth-shaking, but with our unpleasant food experiences in mind, we were very happy.

I have been a good client of Circo for quite some time and it has never disappointed me. The food is outstanding, some of the best pasta and fish I have ever had out of Italy and it is very faithful to its Italian roots. The Maccioni family have a long tradition in the restaurant business and a great well-deserved reputation. Circo is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in NYC.

Based on reading previous revues. I made this reservation to have dinner with friends from out of state. We especially enjoyed the zucchini chips. It seemed to be a popular choice for an appetizer that we saw at other tables as well. The grilled Salmon and my friends Bronzini was tasty and the service was excellent. I will certainlhy recommend to anyone who is visiting or looking for a good place to eat.

It was a showery evening on the night we dined here and yet couples were outdoors enjoying the street scene under the wide awning but we decided to eat indoors. The restaurant was not yet busy as we were having an early dinner. That's always a plus for me because I like to have a relaxed conversation over dinner. Food was excellent and nicely prepared: we three had gazpacho, Mediterranean sea bass in salt crust, roasted vegetables, tortellini, and mussels and clams. I had room for a small dish of vanilla ice cream drenched in espresso. Yum! The staff was efficient, polite, and attentive. This is a lovely, large room, convenient to City Center, Manhattan Theater Club, and Carnegie Hall, a block away. One of our favorite places.

This was our first time and we were very pleased. Rightly or wrongly I always judge a restaurant by the bread that the put on the table. Its hard to leave room for dinner - three or four different kinds and all fantastic! Fresh, delicately pungent olive bread, perfectly baked faccachio, and bread sticks that tasted freshly baked! I had the Branzino backed in a salt crust!. Best I have EVER had. Baked fish moist and flavorful. This is a place I have added to my favorite list and you can be sure they will be seeing us again! Oh.... the service - like the old days, when you get up from the table, someone comes over and re-folds your napkin!

Circo is consistently outstanding. The food is fresh and the service remarkable. The wine list has some rare gems. Bruno and his team make everyone feel at home in this festive environment. It's my neighborhood "kitchen" and go to for a good bowl of homemade pasta and glass of wine! The kitchen always makes my favorite - Cacio e pepe. And the thin, fried zucchini with fresh lemon is addictive!

Had the restaurant week lunch menu for 2: squid ink pasta, with minced shrimp & calamari ragu was excellent, mixed salad was ordinary; Angus skirt steak, baby sweet peppers, fingerling potatoes, stuffed mushrooms was very good, tasty however the Brick pressed chicken, pearl onions, rainbow Swiss chard, roasted potatoes was too dry, overcooked to the extent that the sauce serviced on the side couldn't even hydrate the chicken. For dessert, the mint pannacotta was unique & refreshing, the gelato was also good.

What a disappointment. Hadn't been here in a while and expected more based on past history. Circo just isn't what it used to be. The staff was awful. More men in suits fussing over nothing than actually waiting on customers. They need to get their act together and go back to their roots. It's no longer worth the prices. Not sure how involved the Maccioni family is involved any more. I'm going to stick with dads place, Le Cirque.
